We hear a lot in educational circles about preparing today's youth for the future, most often in terms of increasing academic scores and achievements, but Destination Imagination casts an even wider net, by inspiring and equipping Kindergartners - 12th graders to imagine, innovate and collaboratively problem solve, with peers, while focusing on STEAM challenges. Some of the Social Emotional values that naturally develop for kids when they participate in Destination Imagination challenges include collaboration, respect, perseverance, and integrity… and in the short time we had for this conversation, we were able to dig deep into how those values are evoked and exercised. The leadership team at Destination Imagination (DI) is self-described as small but mighty. It was my extreme good fortune to share conversation with Adam Law, who currently serves as Director of Affiliate Relations, and who grew up participating in DI challenges, year after year. His enthusiasm is deep and deeply contagious. From the DESTINATION IMAGINATION website: We inspire young people to imagine and innovate today so they become the creative and collaborative leaders of tomorrow. As parents and educators, our most important goal is to prepare our kids for the future. In Destination Imagination (DI), students work together in teams to solve open-ended STEAM challenges designed to teach the creative process. Why is that important? The creative process is a step-by-step approach that helps students better understand problems and ask better questions, come up with solutions, learn from failure, and celebrate their achievements. In going through this process, kids learn vital life and career skills—creative thinking, critical thinking, public speaking, and collaborative problem-solving—that help them feel empowered and set them up for success in their future. Each Challenge season, we produce one Early Learning Team Challenge designed for preschool through 2nd grade. Early Learning teams will work over several weeks or months on a solution or presentation, which they will present at a DI tournament for feedback, kudos and standing ovations! These teams will not be ranked or scored in any way. Today, I'm having a conversation with my friend, Simone Griffin. We're talking about the recent overturning of Roe vs. Wade and some of the considerations that we have in our own lives is the importance of economic freedom for women.   Simone and Leisa shares with us their insights:    Simone: The more we can stop, quiet the noise, not listen to divide, and figure out - 'Okay, what are you actually; what is your experience; what is your lived experience? I think the better we can do. But that is not promoted right now. That's very high. And the other side of it is, far too many of us live in very segregated societies with which we interact with only those that we know that are just lots of guts. That does not foster growth at all. And, again this goes beyond politics. This is just individuals here. If I never took the opportunity to get to know you then I am not going to understand life from your perspective. Doesn't mean I'm going to adopt. Maybe/maybe not. But I can at least learn from you. And unfortunately, we're so in our own little bubbles often. And I will include myself in this unless I remember to snap out of it. We remain in our bubbles and that allows us to divide even more. We just have to be mindful of that.        Leisa: The idea that we can honor and respect one another's beliefs and values. They don't have to be our own, but that doesn't mean that we don't respect them. And that, perhaps, is why we're so passionate about the divisiveness. I mean passionate not in a good way. Like because we're watching people that were pretty darn certain if they were putting a room as tending a party together, they could find plenty of things that would connect them and allow them to be like we are so similar. And yet there are a few beliefs that are different. But the idea that those beliefs start to govern the whole. What's different about us governs us versus what's similar about us. That is what I think we're witnessing in this country...   Simone Griffin believes that everyone holds the power and capacity to become financially successful and sustainable.   Simone currently serves as Vice President of Affiliate Relations for HomeFree-USA, where she oversees compliance, federal and private funding, and Congressional advocacy for 53 affiliate organizations nationwide. She also implements federal government grants, as well as those from various funders and private banks. Throughout the housing crisis, Simone managed a program which acquired, renovated and sold foreclosed homes to low-to-moderate income families. During her tenure, the program placed over 412 first time homebuyers into newly refurbished homes.   Prior to becoming Vice President of Affiliate Relations, Simone served as Executive Director of the HomeFree-USA Homeownership Center in Atlanta, Georgia. In that role, she provided oversight and guidance to a team of Homeownership Advisors and Support Staff in general operations and the execution of foreclosure counseling, homebuyers' education, downpayment qualification, and the acquisition, renovation, and sale of bank-owned homes in Metro Atlanta. She also headed all local marketing and advertising initiatives.   Prior to joining HomeFree-USA Simone served as Director of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF, Inc) Student Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP) and SHOP For Wealth. Both programs were designed to encourage homeownership and wealth building opportunities among students at the nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Over three years, Simone visited and worked with 60 colleges and universities. 10 students went on to purchase a home within one year of college graduation, and hundreds more took the first steps to repairing their credit and building wealth.   In her 20 year career in housing and financial services, Simone has seen what has worked, what hasn't, and the best ways to ensure a win-win-win for the consumer, mortgage industry and government. She's been on the ground serving Americans during incredibly pivotal times, and fully believes that we all win when we find the common ground.   Learn more about Simone:   Website: https://homefreeusa.org   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/simone-griffin

Today, I am continuing the series with Simone Griffin. We are talking about inflation today because I feel like it's such an important topic especially when not everyone understands what's going on. We see it at the gas station. We see it at the grocery store. So how can we help ourselves in planning for the shifts that are happening with our money?  What can we do to take good care of ourselves financially with so much uncertainty surrounding us?  I love talking to Simone about these sorts of things. And, I hope you enjoy this and many future episodes where we talk about timely topics that can make a difference in your life. Enjoy.   Simone and Leisa shares with us their insights:    Leisa: You and I both know that we want that. No matter what, for everyone, we want everyone to be feeling like you're living a beautiful life but what's it going to take to have a beautiful life and maybe it costs less. Looking for free alternatives for things, whenever possible, you know, because there are free things. And then I think the other thing that could help is coming to terms with your values and your priorities and getting so crystal clear of what's most important and what's least important. And then those things that are least important, perhaps, are the things that drop off. But any other thoughts that you have?    Simone Griffin: It's so funny you said pretty much what I was going to say in terms of prioritizing. And, you know, I think that there's so much happening in the world we're going to take it outside of money and put it into the world. There's so much happening in the world, and just so much, and not just based on the news, saying. But also what's happening in our lives that I think it's really important not to feel like you're sacrificing. So really still live your very best life. But look for ways that you don't necessarily have to spend more money and or prioritize what is the most important thing, what brings you joy - real joy, real fulfillment. And I even wrote this thinking - no pun intended. But being very mindful about your millions and making sure that you are really looking at - 'All right, is this really serving my true fulfillment. Like is this bringing me absolute pleasure in doing it?' And if it doesn't, don't do it, especially if it costs a lot of money. You know, don't do it, but if you find something that brings you sheer like I love every minute of this. Keep doing that. Number one, figure out what can you can let go of so that you can have that more.   Leisa: Oh it's so good. It's so healthy for the body craves. Most of us are deprived of two things - air and water. And we can get by with less than we need. So we don't know that is actually not optimal. But if you can spend more time breathing and focusing on your breath and getting really oxygenated. And drink more water and feel what it feels like to have more water in your system. It's amazing.    Simone Griffin: And your skin looks better as a result of it. Just gives us better and so many different things. It's funny, the more we take care of ourselves in simple ways, the more they'll show up in a manner that maybe we won't need as many facials or you know other things that are costing us a lot of money. And even I will tell you guys, one hack and everybody doesn't love walking or running. But if you get out in the morning and you just go walking that does not cost any money, number one. It doesn't cost any money other than the cost of your sneakers.   Simone: I think that there's so many things that we can do. We don't have control over inflation. We don't have control over all of this stuff. But we do have control over what we do every day. And I just want to reiterate what Leisa and I are both saying is we do not want you to sacrifice or feel a level of lack in life just because you're looking for ways to combat inflation in your house. Would you agree?    Leisa Peterson: 100%! Now, I feel like this is a really important conversation that we might not be economists. But we have limited - we have been around the block a few times. We're just sharing that. We just don't want you to be caught in a situation where you feel like you have no choices. We want you to always be looking at where are your choices. And making decisions about money, learning more about money, helps us to feel more empowered with money. And we want you feeling empowered because the only place that any of us are going to feel like that we could live an optimal life is from a place of empowerment. Not from a place of feeling like we're a victim to the system.   Leisa: I just want to put something out there that also never hesitate for asking for help. Like, if you ever get stuck or you feel like you can't come up with options - like think to yourself, who might have a different perspective. They're not maybe in my situation, but who can I go to - to get resources. And that can be food, and you know, the resources as far as things you actually need asking for help. But it can also be mindset shifts or ways to look at your situation differently. They give you possibility rather than scarcity and getting caught in the scarcity trap. Does that make sense, Simone?    Simone: It does, it does. It brings up the notion of I'm willing to see things differently. And the more we can be willing to see things differently in a positive way, the more apt we are to be able to move forward and do put ourselves in a better position. Today, I'm speaking about self-advocacy with my friend, client Simone Griffin. I've invited Simone to come on the show today to tell us more about herself because we're going to be having more conversations together about money, net worthiness, financial self-care, and so much more. Simone works in the financial services industry and today, we're talking about this advocacy question - how can we take better care of ourselves? What does it look like? And, you'll hear more about Simone and her story. I think you'll be really inspired to think about your own relationship with money and so much more. Enjoy.   Simone shares with us her insights:    ...the ability to start her own business, and she was like you really need somebody in your corner saying - "You can do this! Go for it..." I mean everybody does, my dad did it and she did. And so, thank goodness, that she had him. And so as a result, I don't know. I don't remember my parents ever working for anybody else. That has been a wonderful ride for me as their kid. But I have also seen the downside of entrepreneurialism if I'm mansell downsize, the stress downside, the other downside as leading the upside. There are in there, a lot... But one thing I've realized is people over glamorized entrepreneurialism, number one. Number two, it is not for everybody. And I really think, it's important to, that kind of goes with the over glamorization, we just say - "Well, I'm just going to go when you know start my own business." You just don't understand the nuances of starting a business, which is why working with people like Leisa and and other business coaches are so important. Because there's so much we don't know in starting a business. And then you've got things that just come up new opportunities, new tools, new this, new that. What happens when you don't know something because we're not good at everything...   And it gives you that opportunity to truly check out for five to six days. And I consider it a massive gift to myself. I don't even consider it an option anymore, because the one year I didn't do it 2020, of course, because of the pandemic, I was like - "Oh, this is something good." It's a reminder of know you really need to take that time and so Kirk started coming with me. And at first, he was like I don't get why you do this every year, but he was like - "Oh, I get it now... I could do this. I could relax have a lot." And so we, it is a great way to check out and to just enjoy time by myself. If he doesn't go or with him if he does go. I'll invite friends, but if they don't go it's fine. I will go by myself because the point is for me to have five days, where I can just chill out and not think of anything, and it has been everything. It is not every vacation, you know, we're probably going to go to London and a couple of weeks and that's going to be an active vacation. I'm not going to fit anywhere next to the water. We're going to go and tour the site. But you do need that one time, where you can just say - "It's just me and looking up at the sky and I truly appreciate that every year."   I was taught to go after all your dreams. But I wasn't necessarily taught that, and this is how much when you put a price tag on it, this is how much you want to figure out the worth and the value to tell you figured out. So I struggled with that, for years, and I think most women struggle with that. And now, it's just a matter of okay "I'm learning my lessons. I'm growing as a result of it." And how can we impart that to other women, especially. And I'm not going to only - I don't want to only say women, because I think men have their own set of issues. I don't want to make it seem like men are not a part of this kind of financial money struggle too. I do think that they approached it differently. So that's why I'm not really speaking about me. I'm more than you know, but I think that I know I needed to learn a lot more about net worthiness. And why I need to go out and advocate for myself. And I'm still learning that lesson. But I'm growing and I'm getting more and more confident every day and I'm understanding the value that I provide in my workplace. And I think, that will only continue, and especially through these conversations, because I learned through as we talked about earlier, asking other people questions. And understanding how they did it.   ...But, so I just perfectly content living her Solange's life. She's got this massive group of fans who love her; love her integrity; love her everything and it will be like I will follow the lines to hills and back. Is this beyond Beyonce's saying level fandom? No, not in terms of numbers, but in terms of fierceness and devotion and love for her work and integrity that's what Solange has. And so I always, I think about them, and I think about how they have champion each other. And I think about how different they are, even though they are the same genre which is music. And I always say you know what, my parents may - may be Beyonce maybe they are, but I can be a damn good Solange, okay, my own personal Solange. And that is a hell of a good life too. And it doesn't mean that Beyonce's life is the only life there is. And I think people think that that's the only life there is. It is a life and it's a good life. It's just not the only life and maybe it's not mine and maybe I'm neither Solange's, nor Beyonce's, completely not... I'm no longer competing. I've accepting myself as I am. That's really the whole point and that's what I admire about you.   Absolutely and especially because you know, going back to the principal topic of money being a tool, there are so many ways that we can utilize it and implement it in our lives, one way or the other. And it says, I hate to use or going into social issues. I do hate to use it. But it's like a hammer, you know how people will talk about hammers and kill people like guns it's not quite the same. But a hammer can be used to either build a house or tear it to shreds or hurt somebody. We choose. Money is very much the same way and we can figure out what we want to do with our money to support the world with which we want to see. And hopefully if we can do that, while also being understanding of what other people are experiencing in the world and understanding that there's really nothing to fear... A favorite of journalists and the media for her depth of knowledge and vibrant personality, JJ, a contributing expert for Get Active Magazine, has also been featured in many national magazines, including Shape, Fitness, Muscle and Fitness HERS, Elegant Bride, and Women’s Health as well as appeared on NBC, CBS, Fox 11 and KTLA. She is also a video expert for About.com and regular contributor for The Daily Love.   JJ launched her professional career in 1996 as the Foundations Director for the New York Sports Club, where she designed curriculum and in-house certification for new and previously uncertified fitness trainers. She has also been certified by the American Council on Exercise (ACE), International Sports Science Association (ISSA), and the Resistance Training Specialist Program (RTS).   With a focus on biomechanics, JJ has lectured for The Learning Annexand as a featured speaker for New York Times Bestselling Author of The Millionaire Mind, T. She is the Wellness Expert for KFC International, the Health and Fitness Expert for the National Association of Entrepreneur Moms, and a Fitness Expert for Nourishing Wellness Medical Center.    She has been working in the health and wellness industry for 15 years, as a fitness trainer with a knack for helping her clients become more self-aware and self-empowered through her ability to quickly identify and pinpoint problem areas, and then create simple solutions involving exercise, nutrition and mindset changes. She is the Host of the new iTunes Podcast Show Fit 2 Love: Physical, Emotional and Spiritual Fitness for the Happy Life You Deserve which is six day a week video and audio show.   What sets JJ apart from her Celebrity Fitness counterparts is the holistic approach to getting results. Over the last fourteen years she has studied, used and applied Positive Psychology, Neuro-Linguistic  Programming (NLP), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Law of Attraction, Quantum Physics, Non Violent Communication, Imago Therapy, and Hypnotherapy. JJ Flizanes has proven that she’s not only an expert in matters of the body and fitness—she’s an insightful and provocative author who delivers a timely message about matters of the heart.
