His books like The Obstacle Is the Way, Ego Is the Enemy, The Daily Stoic, and the #1 New York Times bestseller Stillness Is the Key appear in more than 40 languages and have sold more than 5 million copies. His latest book (a #1 NY Times Best-Seller) is called Right Thing, Right Now. This conversation was recorded in person at Ryan's bookstore, The Painted Porch, which sits on historic Main St in Bastrop, Texas. Notes: June 16, 2024 – Birthday and Father's Day. How does stoicism impact you as a dad? “What's at stake today is how they remember you 20 years from now.” Choose a North Star -- Choosing a North Star can function as a compass professionally, personally, and morally. Most people don't do the work to figure out what their North Star is… Most people default to what others do, and then they end up comparing themselves to others. Ryan Holiday's North Star? Writing... Pay the taxes of life gladly: Not just from the government. Annoying people are a tax on being outside your house. Delays are a tax on travel. Haters are a tax on having a YouTube channel. There's a tax on everything in life. You can whine. Or you can pay them gladly. Oscar Wilde wrote in The Portrait of Dorian Grey “The aim of life is self-development. To realize one's nature perfectly. That is what each of us is here for.” —- What are you here for? Stoicism - "A stoic doesn't control what happens but they focus on how to respond to what happened. The virtues of stoicism are courage, discipline, justice, and wisdom." Build a coaching tree -- Popovich reference - and his coaching tree - how do we get better at making a goal to build a forest of leaders? What's interesting about Pop's coaching tree is there is a huge diversity of what he's created. What's interesting is the coaches who have learned from him are all different - they're not replicas of Coach Popovich.  RC Buford (GM of the San Antonio Spurs) said, "We have a good coaching tree. That's what we do here. In all roles." A shocking number of players have decided to stay in San Antonio, so much so that they have an alumni locker room in their practice facility because they choose to stick around afterward. "I love the idea of “hey we're an organization, and we want to win, but our ultimate job is to bring good people in, and bring them better, and learn from them along the way." "We don't talk enough about the bad coaching trees… ultimately you measure greatness about how replicable their system is and others can take it and use it as well. Don't just judge people on their wins, but on their coaching tree… or lack thereof. When you're hiring someone, can you both be on the same page - and there's clarity. When I get invited to something, who am I bringing? Or when it's a specific project, who on my team will crush it with me or on their own? Understanding that this will be a tour of duty. Robert Greene - "Robert knew I wanted to be a writer and he knew what I wanted to do, and it allowed me to realize that he was letting me do this to understand how the whole writing process works. If somebody wants to work with someone else, what's the best way to reach out to that person, to try and get your foot in the door." Mentors: (Advice to mentees) "Don't say 'I'll do whatever, or I'll do anything,' I don't need anything done, I have very specific things that need to be done. Don't present them with the problem of you…. Present them with the problem they have and several ideas that you have to potentially help. Be specific and present a solution to a potential problem that maybe they haven't thought about yet." Keep your hands clean - the difference between Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy. Be kind — JM Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan said in 1902, “Shall we make a new rule of life from tonight? Always try to be a little kinder than is necessary.” Discipline is a “me” virtue. Justice is a “we” virtue. Make "Good" Trouble - "If you got into this to gain a lot of fans, you'll never do anything to lose fans….. you don't have the fans, the fans have you… it's the other way around. There's a balance, I don't want to speak up on every divisive issue, but at the same time if you're not speaking up on things that you think are important, and you keep silent, then you're creating a form of death, and you're hurting other people that could potentially learn from your words and thoughts… You have to think about how you want to use your platform and the authority you have. It's easy to say politicians live this way, but when's the last time you spoke up on something you didn't agree on?" President Truman - "An incredible example of an ordinary person doing extraordinary things… the last president to not have a college degree. He educated himself and had core values and a sense that he was obligated by the constitution, human decency, and trying to do what was right. He had a strong moral code that guided him in difficult stances, and he had confidence and security. When we think of Presidents and Generals who have outward accomplishments, what I love about Truman is that he watched everyone else steal millions of dollars and he continued to pay off his bankruptcy debts. It doesn't matter that everyone else is doing it… I'm not going to do it." Goal Setting - "I don't set any goals…” I just do the work every day, our goals are usually outcome specific and they're rooted in what are other people going to think about the outcome of this. If I have a goal, they're not geared towards a win or an outcome… the goal is to wake up and do… and I do it daily." The desk where we recorded: Was owned by Joan Didion... "Objects of history get me excited. My vice is I collect historically significant things, at some point, I'm going to re-sell the table… now other people have sat at it, and so I'll probably re-sell it and donate the money… ”significant objects”.. a guy buys a random piece of junk on eBay, and then he'd have a writer write a story about the item and then they'd resell it and people would pay more money for it." Why is his publisher having him re-do the entire audio for the 10th anniversary of The Obstacle is The Way (instead of Ryan just reading the updated parts): "My voice is ten years older. A lot has happened in those ten years."

OPTIMIZE with Brian Johnson | More Wisdom in Less Time

Strict with Yourself   I've said it before and I'll say it again.   Ryan Holiday is one of my favorite writers. We've featured a bunch of his books including The Obstacle Is the Way, The Daily Stoic, Ego Is the Enemy, and Stillness Is the Key.   He's currently working on “The Stoic Virtue Series” in which he's creating a new book for each of the cardinal virtues of Stoicism: Courage, Temperance, Justice, and Wisdom.   We briefly chatted about the first book in the series: Courage Is Calling.   Today we're going to chat about an Idea from the second book in the series: Discipline Is Destiny.   We're going to talk about an Idea that didn't make it into the Note. It's from a chapter called “Tolerant with Others. Strict with Yourself.”   Ryan tells us: “'I am prepared to forgive everybody's mistakes,' Cato the Elder said, ‘except my own.' Ben Franklin, many generations later, would put forth an even better rule: ‘Search others for their virtues, thyself for thy vices.' Or as Marcus Aurelius put it, Tolerant with others, strict for yourself.”   That's Today's +1.   Let's be tolerant with others—looking for their VIRTUES and forgiving their mistakes.   Let's be strict with ourselves—looking for our vices and getting to work on them.    We have more than enough work to do on ourselves.   Let's do it.   TODAY.

OPTIMIZE with Brian Johnson | More Wisdom in Less Time

Answer the Call, Hero!   In our last +1, we talked about virtue #1 in Admiral McRaven's Hero Code.   COURAGE.   I reminded us of the fact that Aristotle told us that courage is the most important virtue—the one that vitalizes all the other virtues.    Why?    Because…   If we don't have the COURAGE to take action in the presence of fear, then all of our supposed Wisdom and Self-Mastery and Love and Gratitude and Hope and Curiosity and Zest is stuck in Theory-land and is, to put it bluntly, USELESS if we don't have the courage to put it into practice.   Churchill echoed that wisdom when he told us that: “Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities, because it is the quality which guarantees the rest.”   Note: Churchill also EMBODIED that Heroic Courage in the face of overwhelming odds and looming catastrophe during World War II. We, arguably, have HIM (and his tenacious (!) courage) to thank most for leading in such turbulent times to help create the world we live in today.   And…   Today I'd like to talk more about Ryan Holiday's take on the subject of courage.   So…   Let's.   As you know if you've been following along, Ryan Holiday is one of my all-time favorite writers and thinkers. My respect for him and for his dedication to his craft as a writer and a practicing Stoic grows with each new book of his I read.   So far, we've covered The Obstacle Is the Way, The Daily Stoic, Ego Is the Enemy, and Stillness Is the Key.   They are all fantastic.    As expected, the first book in his new virtue series on THE most essential virtue: Courage Is Calling is ALSO fantastic.   The book is packed with practical wisdom on why and HOW to embody Heroic courage.   Here's one passage we can reflect on today…   Ryan tells us: “Courage is the management of and triumph over fear. It's the decision—in a moment of peril, or day in and day out—to take ownership, to assert agency, over a situation, over yourself, over the fate that everyone else has resigned themselves to. We can curse the darkness, or we can light a candle. We can wait for someone else to come and save us, or we can decide to stand and deliver ourselves. Which will it be? Every hero faces this choice. Our discrimen—the critical turning point. The moment of truth. Will you be brave? Will you put yourself out there? What will you reveal your character to be? If cowardice is failure to do your duty, then courage is the decision to step up and do it. Answering the call. Overriding fear and seizing your destiny. Doing the thing you cannot do because it needs to be done . . . with fortitude and spirit, guts and grit, even if you have no idea if you'll succeed. This will not be easy. But we cannot fear. We must, as Shakespeare said, ‘meet the time as it seeks us.' Our destiny is here. Let's seize it.”   That's Today's +1.   Courage is calling.   Let's answer the call.   TOGETHER.   Today.

“All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” -  Blase PascalWe live in a world that is constantly distracting us. And we allow it to. We condition ourselves to fill the silence. We don't know how to be bored anymore. We can't stand being alone with our own thoughts...and that's exactly why we need to cultivate the skill and discipline of creating stillness, and getting to know ourselves. In The Obstacle Is the Way and Ego Is the Enemy, bestselling author Ryan Holiday made ancient wisdom wildly popular with a new generation of leaders in sports, politics, and technology. In his new book, Stillness Is the Key, Holiday draws on timeless Stoic and Buddhist philosophy to show why slowing down is the secret weapon for those charging ahead. All great leaders, thinkers, artists, athletes, and visionaries share one indelible quality. It enables them to conquer their tempers. To avoid distraction and discover great insights. To achieve happiness and do the right thing. Ryan Holiday calls it stillness--to be steady while the world spins around you.I recently finished reading this book, and I was reminded of its influence and impact via the conversation with last weeks guest, Alex De Fina. This cultural moment bears witness to a growing distrust of institutions unprecedented in our lifetime. With it comes an unraveling of healthy communication. Tearing others down has taken priority over rising ourselves up. And binary thinking, divisiveness, and fear-based behavior have supplanted sense-making, appreciation for nuance, and mutual respect. For Ryan Holiday, the antidote is the pursuit of virtue—specifically, the virtue upon which all other virtues sit, courage: the ability to rise above fear and to do what's right.Returning for his 4th appearance on the podcast, Ryan is one of the world's bestselling living philosophers globally lauded for adapting Stoicism to the mainstream. His books—including The Obstacle Is The Way, Ego Is the Enemy, The Daily Stoic, and Stillness Is the Key—have sold over 4 million copies and spent over 300 weeks on the bestseller lists.Ryan's expertise in mining the modern-day practicalities of ancient philosophy to live more optimally is coveted by some of the world's most successful CEOs, political leaders, world-class athletes, and NFL coaches, and he's here today to help us make sense of this current moment through the lens of his latest book, Courage Is Calling. This is a conversation about the challenge of sense-making amidst our national divide. It's about the application of time-tested wisdom, the nature of virtue and why doing the right thing is always the right thing. We cover it all: the perils of individualism, responsibility as a counter-balance to liberty, fear, courage, partisanship, tribalism, and why virtue is both a craft and an action verb.To read more click here. And as always, the podcast streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.I relish my conversations with Ryan—he is a compelling thinker about things that matter, and this one is chock a block with practical wisdom, things we can learn from philosophy and history to make sense of today, and most importantly, to live and be better humans and citizens.Peace + Plants, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Welcome back to The Jason Goldberg Is Ruining Podcasting Podcast! In this episode, Jason talks with Courtney Granberry and Matthew Russell. They share some important opinions on a variety of topics that are relevant for the period we're living and important for the changes we're experiencing, both as individuals and as a community.   “I think everybody should have a right to vote with their dollar, and vote with their attention, because the new economy is attention.” – Matthew Russell   You will hear all about the “Cancel Culture” and how it has been impacting everyone that has some kind of visibility online. This social issue revolves around what the consequences of “canceling” someone publicly in terms of public shaming and psychological damages are, what really causes it, what the limits between a bad joke or an offensive insult are, who's actually behind this whole online cancelation, and all the branches of topics that this discussion eventually leads to.   “It's always nice to be mad at something and then take a step back and actually think about it. I feel like sometimes you react so fast that you don't have time to really think about it. So, I think it is just educating yourself, reading books, not taking things personally, and maybe having a conversation with someone who's older than you.” – Courtney Granberry   On a lighter note, they talk about their work – with music and modeling, what new projects they have been up to, how they see the future with new technologies popping up everywhere, and their experience with meditation and how it correlates with their lifestyle. At the end of the chat, Jason asks Courtney and Matthew what is the one thing that they are willing to (and wanting too) completely ruin in this lifetime. Listen in to catch their response!   “If people, for the most part in their track record, seem to be pretty well intentioned people and they slip up and say something that is not appropriate and possibly offensive – and they are held accountable, somebody does call them out for saying it -, do they deserve to be canceled as a result of that?” – Jason Goldberg About Courtney Granberry and Matthew Russell Courtney Granberry is a Fashion Model who has been featured on brands like Savage X Fenty, Target and more. Matthew Russell is a DJ and member of Cheat Codes. Both of them are the hosts of “I'm Not Racist, My Friend's Black” podcast.   Key Timestamps [4:31] – Courtney and Matthew talk about the beginning of their relationship; [11:49] – Matthew's background with creating and producing music; [13:08] – Courtney and Matthew's stories on “big breaks”; [27:07] – How meditation has been helping them; [38:17] – NFTs, new technology and future devices; [49:27] – Causes and consequences of “Cancel Culture” nowadays; [01:05:15] – Is it easy to cancel people publicly nowadays?; [01:10:27] – Matthew talks about the impact of “Cancel Culture” in his work; [01:11:23] – Courtney comments on a personal situation involving “Cancel Culture”; [01:18:00] – Bullying, bad jokes, and the new generations; [01:30:32] – What Courtney and Matthew want to ruin in life;   Related Links Check out their podcast:  I'm Not Racist, My Friend's Black | Episode with Jason (Spotify) I'm Not Racist, My Friend's Black | Episode with Jason (Apple Podcasts) Episode with Jason on YouTube   Books mentioned in this episode: Stillness Is the Key by Ryan Holiday Trust Me, I'm Lying by Ryan Holiday Perennial Seller by Ryan Holiday   Resources: 6-Phase Meditation with Vishen Lakhiani   Connect with us! I spend some time on a quick overview of the philosophy of Stoicism, something that has been truly world-changing for me. I use an overview written by Ryan Holiday on his site, DailyStoic.com, as the structure for this overview. You can see that post here. I'm also giving away a few copies of Ryan's newest book, Stillness Is the Key, to my listening friends. Here's how you can win: Go to the show's Instagram or Facebook page and find the post about this giveaway (it's a picture of the book). Reply to the post and tag a friend that is not a current listener of the podcast but that you think could dig it. I'll pick two "pairs" (poster and the person they tagged) and send them each a copy of the book. Lots of fun stuff coming for you soon! I have a lot of extra time at home right now (as, I'm sure, do you) so that's resulting in some new content! Wash your hands! Commander Divine talks to Ryan Holiday about his books, his writing process and what he has learned through his study of the Stoics and other philosophers. Hear how: Life is as much about the things we DON'T do as it is about our actions and deeds. Journaling is an essential component of understanding and reflecting on what we actually know and understand. A huge difficulty in the modern world is making the time for the stillness that we need.
