It’s not every day Bridget gets to talk to one of her heroes! Soledad O’Brien has built her career on stories that hit hard and stick with you, winning multiple Emmys and Peabody awards along the way. Her work has inspired Bridget since she was a young girl, watching her coverage of the emerging Internet in the 1990s. In this wide-ranging interview, Soledad talks about her two new documentaries, both of which are the subject of considerable online discussion. 'The Perfect Neighbor,' on Netflix, tells the tragic story of AJ Owens and examines the legal and systemic failures that almost allowed her death to go unpunished due in part to Florida's stand-your-ground law. 'The Devil is Busy,' now streaming on HBO Max, follows a day in the life of Tracii, the head of security at a Georgia abortion clinic, and the relentless work she does to keep the clinic operating safely. The documentary offers a powerful, ground-level, humanizing view of the challenges faced by those working to provide reproductive healthcare in the current landscape. In addition to talking about the films, Soledad also shares her perspectives on journalism, online culture, and the roles of filmmakers and journalists in creating change. This episode starts with a line that should make anyone in communications sit up a little straighter. Michael Wolff, a bestselling Trump biographer and longtime access journalist, emailed Jeffrey Epstein with strategic advice about how Epstein could handle questions about Donald Trump. Not expose him. Not confront him. Advise him.And now, those emails are a crisis in themselves.Today's episode focuses on the messaging behind Wolff's interactions with Epstein. Not the salacious details, not the conspiracy theories, not the internet rabbit holes. We're talking about messaging, influence, framing, and the ethical gray zones revealed in more than 20,000 Epstein-related documents released by the House Oversight Committee. To break this down, we look closely at a long on-air conversation from The Daily Beast's emergency podcast episode featuring Wolff and host Joanna Coles. She pressed him hard. He tried to explain, defend, and reframe. And what he said on that podcast is, frankly, a crisis-communication case study in real time.In this episode:• How Wolff's emails show him acting less like a journalist and more like a strategist• The moment Wolff tells Epstein how to "let Trump hang himself"• Why Wolff's "I was the lone truth-teller" explanation is classic crisis reframing• The ethical tension between ingratiation and complicity• Why these emails matter for media credibility at a moment when Pew Research shows public trust is scraping the floor• How Wolff's relationship with Epstein may have shaped four Trump books• The danger of access journalism becoming influence management• Why everyone else in Epstein's orbit is silent, and Wolff is the only one talking• The deeper question: what happens when the people tasked with revealing power start acting like they're part of it?This episode is about messaging and the moral tradeoffs behind it.It's about the ugly truth of proximity to power. And it's about what happens when a journalist crosses the line from observing a crisis...into participating in one.Links Mentioned:• The Daily Beast interview with Michael Wolff and Joanna Coles• Pew Research Center: "Americans' Views of the News Media" (2023)Want More Behind the Breakdown? The challenges they face extend beyond scaling a business or managing operations; they wrestle with the pressure of delivering meaningful social change while also keeping a wary eye on their bottom line. That's why Caroline Diehl MBE, Founder and CEO of Social Founders, has dedicated herself to supporting the well-being of the people behind these organizations. She's not focused on the nuts and bolts of business planning or marketing. Instead, Caroline is building a global network that supports founders themselves, giving them a space to connect, decompress and recharge. As Caroline explained on today's episode, “It's amazing how some of the most experienced and brilliant social founders in our network still say that they feel lonely. They feel that they can't talk really openly to their board or to their management team. They can't constantly dump on their partner back at home. And they love the idea of connecting with other founders.”She's quick to note that the ecosystem for social impact founders doesn't match what's available to tech founders. “If you're a tech founder, you're on to a good thing. But if you're a charity founder or a social entrepreneur, it's pretty tough. And there's not much support for the actual founder.”Caroline's approach is all about founder well-being. Social Founders doesn't duplicate what others do. Instead, they partner with organizations offering practical business help, like the UK's School for Social Entrepreneurs, while focusing on the founder's mental and emotional health. “We're there for the well-being of the founder, which in turn helps that founder be a better founder,” Caroline said. The double bottom line—delivering both social impact and financial sustainability—adds another layer of complexity. Caroline captured this tension: “Sometimes you can create more social impact without having to focus on the money all the time and vice versa. If you're focusing on the money all the time, then you end up just maybe selling lots of mugs or stickers or something and not doing enough social impact.”Changemakers need not go it alone. Social Founders offers a global community, recognizing the value of peer support and connection. If you're building a social enterprise or founding a charity, consider joining the movement at socialfounder.org. You'll find a group of like-minded leaders who understand your challenges—and a network designed to help you thrive.tl;dr:Caroline Diehl MBE founded Social Founders to support the well-being of social enterprise and charity founders. She highlights the loneliness and unique pressures founders face, especially balancing impact and financial sustainability.Caroline emphasizes building networks over business advice, prioritizing emotional and peer support for changemakers. Her superpower, positive energy, has fueled her success and resilience across multiple impactful organizations.Listeners are invited to join Social Founders' global network for community, inspiration and support. How to Develop Positive Energy As a SuperpowerCaroline described her superpower as “positive energy.” She explained, “Whoever I'm talking to, whether I'm meeting some grand poobah running some big company or the people that I really love who are the grassroots founders and changemakers, or whether I'm just on my own… I can call on a superpower inside me of positive energy and make that happen.” Even during difficult times, when doubt creeps in, Caroline channels this positive energy to keep moving forward, whether she's running marathons or building impactful organizations.Illustrative Story:After founding the Media Trust and Together TV, Caroline started Social Founders from scratch, with no investment capital and little personal financial security. She had to convince funders, opinion leaders and founders from diverse backgrounds to join her network. Despite being “not young anymore,” she relied on her positive energy to inspire and mobilize others. Caroline shared that much of her energy comes from the people she meets—like a renowned Japanese dancer who supports people with learning difficulties through dance, or a young entrepreneur in Japan helping formerly incarcerated youth start businesses. These encounters continually fuel her own drive.Actionable Tips for Developing Positive Energy:Focus on your love for your mission and your passionate belief in the change you want to make.Keep reminders—like sticky notes with meaningful messages—visible in your workspace.Connect regularly with the people you aim to help; their stories can renew your motivation. When energy is low, spend time outdoors: go for a walk, bike ride or simply get fresh air.By following Caroline's example and advice, you can make positive energy a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. When you ask ChatGPT or Gemini a question about politics, whose opinions are you really hearing? In this episode, we dive into a provocative new study from political scientist Justin Grimmer and his colleagues, which finds that nearly every major large language model—from ChatGPT to Grok—is perceived by Americans as having a left-leaning bias. But why is that? Is it the training data? The guardrails? The Silicon Valley engineers? Or something deeper about the culture of the internet itself? The hosts grapple with everything from “Mecha Hitler” incidents on Grok to the way terms like “unhoused” sneak into AI-generated text—and what that might mean for students, voters, and future regulation. Should the government step in to ensure “political neutrality”? Will AI reshape how people learn about history or policy? Or are we just projecting our own echo chambers onto machines?

Today's show opens with Kamala Harris continuing to try to rail like Hillary, but she is starting to lose steam. We also learned that Tim Walz may have been getting intimate with the daughter of a CCP member while he was teaching in China. JD Vance did a great job taking NBC's Kristen Welker apart about Russia, Ukraine and “the enemy within.” We then remind you what much of the Legacy/mainstream media said about Harris before her coronation. They didn't like her, they mocked her and they tried to get Joe Biden to drop her. Now they suddenly want you to think she is the darling of the Left? Rep. Byron Donald's (R-FL) ripped CNBC host of Squawk Box, Sorkin, for him trying to suggest Harris never uses any vitriol in her rallies. Donald's reminded him she calls Trump Hitler every chance she gets. Even Jon Stewart had to mock the attempt of State-run media to act offended by a “roast” comedian getting up and roasting things. Jeff Bezos, owner of the Washington Post, writes an Op-Ed quoting the most recent Gallup poll showing media falling, for the first time, below Congress in terms of the trust people have in them. He suggests the media has done something wrong. Finally, we play a piece from Nicole Shanahan, RFK, Jr.'s running mate from their MAHA PAC. When we talk about documentation, digitalisation and restoration we usually assume that the sites where this takes place are accessible and safe, like in an open-air museum. However, there is a category of conservation specialists who, on a daily basis, are dealing with a range of challenges when they work in remote and/or dangerous areas. In this episode two heritage preservation experts talk about what drives them and how they address the perils their teams face in places like Iraq, Mozambique or Angola. Stefano Campana is Professor of Landscape Archaeology at the University of Siena, specialising in documentation and remote sensing. He is the co-founder of Archeo Tech & Survey, a spin-off company from the University of Siena, which specialises in archaeology, remote sensing and geomatics. Giovanni Fontana Antonelli is an architect and landscape planner who devoted two decades of his work to the safeguarding of cultural heritage in the Arab world. He is the co-founder of Archi.Media Trust, a non profit organisation focussing on cultural heritage preservation and cultural development.Support the show
Welcome back from the long weekend! Steve Friess is back to talk all things politics with a Michigan and local Metro Detroit lens. If you don't know Steve, he's a veteran freelance journalist for the New York Times, Newsweek and many others. Some of the topics we hit: Political Landscape: Jer and Steve discuss the heated race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Harris recently visited Detroit and we discuss her possible strategic avoidance of college campuses maybe due to a hot-button issue. Internal Conflicts: The Michigan GOP's internal struggles come to light as Ron Wiser, a significant figure in the party, loses the nomination for the University of Michigan's Board of Regents. This is seen as a sign of the complete Trumpification of the party. Democratic Tensions: The Democratic Party faces its own challenges with a pro-Palestinian activist's nomination for the Board of Regents, highlighting the internal conflicts over the Gaza issue and the party's reluctance to address it head-on. Senate Race: A new poll shows Elissa Slotkin leading Rep. Mike Rogers 46 to 42 with 12% undecided. We analyze the campaign strategies, including Rogers' dual approach of presenting himself as both independent and a Trump ally. Media Trust and Journalism: Jer and Steve discuss the growing distrust in media from both the left and right, and the challenges faced by journalists in today's polarized environment. They reflect on the importance of local news and the impact of social media on public discourse. Don't miss this insightful episode. Share your thoughts with us at dailydetroit@gmail.com. The Better Public Media trust says online giants' turnover should be taxed and ringfenced to fund news. The Government's flipped from opposing the Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill, which started under Labour, to now supporting it - saying on balance, it's worth doing. The Bill would encourage companies such as Meta, which owns Facebook, and Google to negotiate with local media outlets to pay for their news content. After Canada introduced a similar law in 2023, Meta blocked news content from appearing on Facebook there. Meta has also said it plans to stop paying Australian media companies for news. Better Public Media's Peter Thompson spoke to Corin Dann.

One of the key questions out of the annual Trust in News survey is, did Covid kill trust in New Zealand's media? There are several notable numbers and trends and also a couple of problems. What is trust, is another question. Your trust is not my trust and what you use to form trust is not covered in this. For example, Newstalk ZB is a mix of news and commentary. Do you trust the news and not the commentary? Or both? Or the opposite? Does the fact Radio New Zealand fell mean you listened to Jim Mora once too often, or they don't provide a straight bat in their bulletins anymore? Does the fact Simon Dallow opens the 6pm news with what seems like an increasingly long Māori version of "good evening" affect your outlook on the bulletin that follows? The upshot is that in the last handful of years our trust in news in this country has plummeted, and badly. In 2020 it was 53%, now it is 33%. Where did the trust go? And does the collapse in trust get sheeted back to Covid, the one o'clock lectures from the pulpit of truth and the Government's millions to newsrooms to help them through the period? The biggest individual falls year on year are with TVNZ and Newshub? Not far behind was Radio New Zealand. For what it's worth, as a punter, this feels like my story because my trust is way down. I can also argue, to a degree given I work in the trade, that I have a bit of insight and there is not a shadow of a doubt in my mind that the media and wider New Zealand do not, and have not, connected particularly well for a number of years. In my professional opinion gleaned over four decades and counting, it's largely because social media has given a smallish group licence to go nuts with conspiracies, it's because a lot of journalists are very young and very inexperienced with next to no institutional knowledge and as a result they parrot press releases as opposed to asking questions, and it's because they also tend to be left-leaners who were more than open to the Ardern leadership of the day, which they fell for hook, line and sinker. And so, the rot began. In other words, they have dug their own grave. Here's the sad bit - these stats come at a time when bits of the media are on their knees. That, in part, explains why the TVNZ open letter petition at last glance got 12,100 signatures, which hardly a cavalcade of support for what those trying to save their jobs would argue is vital work that we will sorely miss when it's gone. My question - will we? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Just a third of New Zealanders now say they trust the news. That's the major finding of AUT's research centre for Journalism, Media and Democracy's fifth annual Trust in News in Aotearoa New Zealand report. Trust in news in general fell from 42 percent last year to 33 percent in this year's report - but it's a whopping 20 percent down from the first report in 2020 when it was at 53 percent. All 16 news brands that were part of this survey suffered declines in trust. The ODT had the highest trust score, with RNZ and the NBR tied in second place and TVNZ, Newsroom, BusinessDesk and 'other commercial radio' tied for third. Other findings from this year's survey: Fewer people believed the news media was independent of political influence and more said they actively avoid the news to some degree. The survey was conducted in February just before the shock announcement that Newshub was set to close, and that TVNZ would be cutting jobs and news programmes. Final decisions are expected from both organisations this week. Kathryn is joined by Dr Merja Myllylahti and Dr Greg Treadwell, co-authors of the report.

During a lively on-screen discussion between 'Real Time' presenter, Bill Maher, and the brains behind 'Family Guy', Seth MacFarlane, the pair found themselves in a heated discourse on the credibility of mainstream news reporting. The fascinating contrast between their viewpoints became evident as they delved into the conversation. MacFarlane emerged as someone who, surprisingly, demonstrated a high level of faith in the integrity of mainstream media outlets. There is no doubt that the contemporary media landscape, characterized by a multitude of broadcasters and a never-ending stream of news cycles, prompts an array of responses. Some observers offer unwavering loyalty, others, like Maher, display a healthy skepticism, while many are left questioning who and what to believe. 'Real Time' and 'Family Guy', both popular and influential shows in their respective genres, can indirectly shape the discourse around these issues. The impassioned debate between their creators reflects the complexities and nuances that define public attitudes towards media.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
