"An hour in, this is where I think the film jettisons the thoughtful, melancholic and reflective tone for action and it's all the worse for it." Sarah from Weird Horizon returns with yet another feel good film, containing multiple dog deaths. No crushed hands this time. Sarah and Sean then do a really in-depth analysis of the film, before watching the alternative ending and give their verdict on it. Discussion Points: -Dog deaths in film. -The hype for this film back in 2007. -Will Smith's powerhouse performance. -Reviewing this film in a post-pandemic. -The shift in the tone of this film. -The beautiful soundtrack. -Sarah enjoys the little details of how Robert has survived the last three years. -Why Sean wants to turn the film off after an hour. -Expectations versus reality, e.g. the Statue of Liberty's head. -The strength of the melancholic, slow-burn scenes. -Sean's version of the third act. -Sarah and Sean both loved the flashback scenes. -The lack of single-handed films; 'The Shallows' starring Blake Lively is another good example. -Sarah believes locking yourself in a room is not a solution. -Robert's view of the infected as 'monsters'. -Big American flags. -Sean sings the American National Anthem. Raised Questions: -Does Sean need to introduce himself? (That's not meant to sound pretentious) -Was 2007 overloaded with apocalypse films? -Why does Sean insult the majority of his audience? -Is the CGI egregious? -Would this film have been better if they hadn't shown the 'monsters' at all? -Do they waste the hour of build up in the last half an hour? -Should they have kept Robert Neville as the only human in the film? -Are you interested in the sequel? -Which medication was Robert taking after his dog dies? -What was he saving that bacon for? -Where is the extended cut of this film, seriously? -Do the 'monsters' attempt to stay away from Robert? Zombie Recommendations: -In The Flesh (2013-2014), a BBC Three TV Series. -28 Days Later (2002). -George A. Romero's Land of the Dead (2005). When you think of the American National Anthem, what comes to mind? Is it the melody? Or the first lines that many of us sang in grade school, or before a baseball game with thousands of people? ‘Oh say, can you seeee…by the dawn's early light.' If you're more pedantic, you might think of more lyrics and the imagery of the ‘bombs bursting in air.' Or if you're into history (like I am), you might think of the context—author Francis Scott Key, who watched the all-night bombardment of Fort McHenry from a British vessel in the Chesapeake Bay, and then scribbling down the words when the Fort's flag was still flying in the morning. All those things touch on the anthem in meaningful ways. But if you think about it, a country's anthem is really more than the words, the melody, the history, or even our own memories of it. All of those things spring from it, but stripped to its core identity, a country's anthem is a collective story—a lyrical one to be sure. It's a story that embodies national history, values and aspirations, but also, and more powerfully, the feelings, ideas, and associations people have, and share about their country. Pride, camaraderie, historical events collectively remembered, honor for those who sacrificed for their country—everything's wrapped up in that story and what it means to people. You've probably heard another country's national anthem…but unless you've lived or spent some time in that country, hearing it probably didn't prompt all of the thoughts and feelings that come with hearing your own national anthem. There's nothing wrong with that. The point is that people are wired with deep, personal loyalties, and those loyalties are tied to stories. Just like someone who appreciates a national anthem, a good brand builder does well to understand that. https://youtu.be/7xW8aeSrQCw Brand Anthem Defined I know what you're thinking…great topic for the Fourth of July. Fair enough. But when it comes to thinking about your brand's story, how you tell it, and how that telling of it makes people think and feel, thinking in terms of a national anthem makes sense. With that in mind, your brand's ‘anthem' is more than good content, great marketing, or obviously, an incredible product or service that keeps people coming back. Rather, it's your unique, remarkable story, and telling it in a way that unifies all those things with personality, emotion, and authenticity that people relate to. I'll talk more about this later, but I will say that one of the best ways to express and share your brand anthem is through video. As far as putting your brand anthem out in the world both visually and audibly, it seems to be a natural way to do that. Obviously, you can do that in other parts of your brand, your website, your collateral, and the way that you talk to clients, but the video side is an optimal way to capture and communicate it. Of course, there's a temptation to cram everything—every service or product you offer—into your brand's communication. But more than likely, that will come across as confusing or overwhelming to your audience. If you find yourself cramming everything in, take a step back, because you shouldn't be. A solid brand anthem video dodges that problem while communicating something evocative—starting with your brand's story. A Good Anthem Starts with Story As I've said and written about before, your brand story is the foundation, the starting point for everything you'll communicate through marketing, visuals, and a cohesive brand expression. Along with your brand's purpose, history, and mission—your brand's story is no small ingredient in your brand's anthem. There's any number of storytelling formulas. For more digging, I'd recommend reading up on Joseph Campbell's (no relation to Campbell's soup) template called the Hero's Journey. Campbell based his template on what he found after looking through thousands of stories spanning ancient his...
When a caller asks about why there's a need for a black national anthem, Dan and Ryan wonder aloud what the Irish American national anthem should be. Jennie and Dianne learn about Francis Scott Key and his gravesite at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, Maryland. Francis Scott Key was a complicated man who opposed war, but believed in the freedom of the nation. He fought for the freedom of black people while at the same time owning slaves himself that he never intended to offer freedom. He was a poet, a father, a lawyer. In an Ordinary Extraordinary moment of jubilation after witnessing a victorious battle in the war of 1812, Key penned a poem that would one day become America's national anthem. Singing since he was a child, Mark Preston took every opportunity he could to sing for those who would listen and those who believed in his talent. Joining the Air Force was Mark's first stop on his way to being a top performer. His talent earned him accolades when he was selected as the Air Force's finest vocalist of 1975, and then toured with Tops in Blue. This elite group is made up of the Air Force's top 20, most versatile entertainers. During his time in the Air Force, Mark was awarded the American Spirit Honor Medal as well as the Air Force Commendation Medal. Country Music Hall of Famer Tennessee Ernie Ford so aptly put it, "Cock your pistols, there will be no stopping this young man", and there hasn't been. From his string of impressive performances at one of Los Angeles' oldest clubs, The Horn, Mark decided to make his next career move to Las Vegas. Mark Preston became a featured performer at The Dunes, The Silverbird, The Marina and The Sahara hotels. Preston also performed on Harrah's stage in Reno and in Lake Tahoe. Variety magazine dubbed him "one of the finest entertainers in show business". With several appearances on the hit series Vega$, as well as being the stand-in and photo double for the show's star, Robert Urich, Mark went on to do guest appearances on several network specials. Again, none of this went unnoticed as Mark would find himself moving again for another opportunity to expand his already growing career. Because of his acting on television and his singing, the Indiana native was asked to co-host The Bob Braun Show, a syndicated variety show originating in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mark proved his versatility when he joined the Braun Show. While he was performing on the Bob Braun Show, he was asked to open for the First Lady of Comedy, Phyllis Diller. "I love to refer to Mark Preston as my protégé", said Ms. Diller. "He has one of the strongest, most beautiful voices I have ever heard. He really gets to an audience. He sings, acts, emotes, is handsome...everything". Mark's unique talent preceded him again, and he was asked to join the world famous recording group, 'The Lettermen'. Mark accepted and he performed for a total of 11 years with the group. During that time, the group recorded several albums and CDs. There was a campaign to put forward the group's most recent recording "New Directions 2010" with the Les Brown Jr. Orchestra, for 3 Grammy nominations. In 2001, the Lettermen were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall Of Fame and in early 2020, the group was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. Mark has performed on over 110 different cruise ship and his a continued headline for all of the premier cruise lines and lets us know how cruising is back.

Based on contextual and factual analysis, I believe the American National Anthem is racist at worst and racially insensitive at best.

Gina Yashere jokes about American childhoods in season 2, episode 2 of Netflix's "The Stand Ups".
Today’s episode of Jarhead is a special one, as we celebrate our nation’s independence day. That’s right folks, America is 244 years young, and it was on this day in 1776 the United States laid down its claim to be a free and independent nation. Our declaration of independence was drafted by one of our founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson, who would go on to become the 3rd President of the United States of America. Also on today’s show I am going to discuss the American National Anthem, also referred to as The Star Spangled Banner. Our allegiance to Christ, especially in the midst of tribulation, will transform us in ways we cannot imagine.

The American National Anthem has been a song that prompts memories of freedom, independence and history. While most will tell you that it was written during the Revolutionary War, history records this song being written during the war of 1812. The first war was for Independence, the second, a Nation that could stand it's ground. The same is with our walk with Jesus. We're first delivered from sin, however, we must learn to stand as a competent believer.
