July 1st is known across the United States as the day when medical school graduates start their first day as resident physicians in hospitals nationwide. As with all new beginnings, anxiety and fear are common and expected emotions in assuming these new roles and responsibilities. However, this trepidation does not end after one's first day of work. “Pre-shift anxiety” is a phenomenon seen in many new-graduate healthcare workers during their first few months, and even years, of starting in the workplace. This anxiety is usually an amalgamation of fear of making mistakes, imposter syndrome, comparison with others' improvements, "analysis paralysis," striving for impossible perfectionism and lack of belief in one's progress and skills. How can we build confidence as new graduates and new hires? Do self-affirmations help tackle pre-shift anxiety? How can we successfully debrief post-shift? How can we set boundaries from our jobs and maintain a healthy work-life balance? We are joined today by Diana Page, board-certified nurse practitioner and the founder and burnout prevention coach behind Self-Care Catalyst, which provides the signature program "Resilient Nurse Roadmap" that seeks to help nurses and NPs navigate their professional paths away from burnout and into confidence, freedom, and joy. She received her BS in Biology from Wheaton College Massachusetts in 2005 and MSN in Acute Care Nurse Practitioner from Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions in 2009. Diana currently stands as an outpatient neurology nurse practitioner in Maine and is a nurse well-being contributor to nursing platforms such as The Nursing Beat, Keener, and Nurse.org.Livestream Air Date: October 12, 2022Diana Page, MSN, APRN, ACNP-BC: IG @catalystforselfcareFriends of Franz: IG @friendsoffranzpod & FB @friendsoffranzpodChristian Franz (Host): IG @chrsfranz & YT Christian FranzThankful to the season's brand partners: Clove, BETR Remedies, Eko, Lumify, RescueMD, Medical School for Kids, Your Skincare Expert, Twrl Milk Tea

Were you told that crying & being vulnerable was inappropriate & makes you look weak? Whoever told you that was wrong & doesn't know what they are talking about. Crying is actually a sign of strength & acceptance of ourselves. Let's talk about why!Show Notes:Sometimes you just can't help it. Sometimes you are just overwhelmed with emotions & feel like the best release you can have is crying. And I totally agree. And I have always felt this way, even when I was told that crying is unacceptable & displays weakness. It's because I always feel at least a little bit better after getting the cry out & will feel worse over time if I don't release the emotions somehow. And at least with crying you can do it anywhere. For me growing up, I was told not to cry and I'm sure this happened to many other people. Because it can be seen as a weakness, as most displays of emotions & vulnerability can be, it's not tolerated by a lot of people & families. Did this happen to you? My father wanted us to always look like a strong little family, which included not being affected by anything that happened to us. But I want you to know it doesn't have to be this way. You can be emotional. You can cry. You can be vulnerable & still be seen & considered to be a strong & capable person. It doesn't diminish who you are or what you are capable of. It's a normal, human function & reaction to whatever causes you to have those feelings.Crying is a normal, human response to pain, frustration, sadness, so many emotions, and it's brought out by different experiences, dependent on the individual. It's also very helpful for releasing the stress that can come with these experiences.Crying is also a representation of how comfortable you are with yourself, which also demonstrates how important emotional health is to you & can also set the example for others that it's ok to be vulnerable. It's a sign of strength, that you are able to be that open & bare without caring what others think of you.Today I want to talk about why crying is a good experience for us all:1. Great for Self-Soothing. (according to research, crying releases oxytocin & endorphins, which help you ease the pain you are experiencing & bring calm after it's over.)2. Crying Can Help You Move Forward. (crying will help you release the pent-up emotions & not feel the need to hold onto whatever happened. Letting it out is similar to letting it go)3. Crying Can Restore Emotional Balance. (according to Yale University research, crying can help restore emotional equilibrium because whether you are crying because you're happy or sad, it allows your body to recover from such strong emotions by letting it out through tears.)3. Find better coping mechanisms.Thank you again for listening & I hope this episode was helpful.Come visit me on my Instagram page @sabrinajoyperozzo to say hi or on Clubhouse @sabrinajperozzo to chat!Visit www.sabrinajoy.com for more content & blog posts!Have any questions, comments or feedback?  Send me an email at realpositivegirlpodcast@gmail.com!See you for the next episode!Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/sabrinajoy)

I am my OWN guest this week... thought it's only fair that the questions get turned on me. Thanks for asking me them Dan! For those who don't know my background - I started uploading YouTube videos when I was 17, somehow managed to gain some sort of online following; and then started our band Meadowlark with Dan. I'm the singer and it's the best job in the world. I am definitely NOT going to put my own stats up here. But go and listen to Meadowlark if you haven't yet! STOP THE PRESSES! We had comedy multi-hyphenate Aly Dixon on for one of our funniest (and loosest) episodes to date! Fun fact, Aly is a very anxious person and its FUN!  This episode is for stone cold chillers that want to sit in as 3 comedians talk about their own interests including, but not limited to: horrible hospital stories, horrible concert stories, really great masturbation opinions, and horrible dating stories. Check out episode 17 now OK bye bye!

Back in 1968 a movie called “Yours Mine and Ours” convinced us of the warmth, love and inspiration of a blended family consisting of the two parents, played by Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda, and the 8 North children and the 10 Beardsley children. The movie was remade in 2005 with Rene Russo and Dennis Quaid. But Tom North was one of those children, and his book, True North, exposes the truth of the real family dynamics. His is a story of inspiration, survival and hope, in which the 8 North children, adopted by their step-father, became the Beardsley family. But it wasn't one big happy family as has been depicted in the movies. The stepfather's violence and abuse created a life of intimidation confusion, turmoil, fear and depression for all of the North children. This fact was revealed years later, as Tom traveling his own journey of survival, self-discovery and healing, led his other family members to therapy. If you are trying to reclaim your authenticity, this show is for you.
