See all the Healthcasts at https://www.biobalancehealth.com/healthcast-blog When I tell my patients that they need a high protein diet, all they can think of is meat…but protein sources are found in many parts of our diet and eating a variety of protein sources is the key to health, we should find out what we should eat and why? Protein contains amino acids that are the major building blocks to make our muscles, skin, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and bones.  It also supplies the components of our skin, hair and nails, and carries with it calcium (the major component of bones and connective tissue).  Protein is found in cheese, milk, all milk products, whey for protein shakes, pea protein, fish, all seafood, chicken, lamb, eggs, Quinoa and beans for building muscle. Pieces of proteins make up every fluid the body makes, including hormones, enzymes, peptide communicators, the immune globulins, semen, breast milk, and vaginal discharge….is it any wonder that I tell my patients to increase protein in their diets! Despite the need for amino acids and short chains of amino acids called peptides, we also need a variety of foods, all colors at every meal to provide the other building blocks of our body.  For example, fat is a very necessary food for every person, at every meal.  When I was pregnant, I wanted to feed my baby everything she needed to build a healthy beautiful brain, so I ate Braun Schweiger every day (made from liver) for lunch with a salad.  The Braun Schweiger provided Rachel, my daughter, with the building blocks for an amazing brain. Our brains are almost all fat.  That is the type of tissue that nerves are made of, but nerves also need B12 to work properly and B12 is primarily from animal products. It is relatively easy to include fat in our diets, but it is truly difficult to get enough protein to build muscle on a vegan diet. My vegan patients must be experts in obtaining protein from their diet and must be aware of the components in all the food they eat to get the proper nutrition. Carbohydrates are made for “action”.   Carbohydrates are required for exercise, walking and brains also burn carbohydrates when you are doing “brain work”. Carbohydrates are stored as fat if we eat them but don't exercise!  Think before you eat carbohydrates about your next 12 hours and whether you are going to exercise to burn the carbohydrates in your diet. So How Much Protein Do We Need? Growing teenagers, people who lift weights and try to gain muscle, pregnant women (need a minimum of 100 grams a day) and patients like mine on testosterone need more protein in their diet than the average sedentary, adult. To quantitate the number of grams of protein you need to sustain your body with a high percentage of muscle, a person needs more than ½ their weight in grams of protein. For example, a 125 lb. woman with average to high muscle mass will need more than 62.5 grams of protein a day. A person with higher muscle mass will need more than that. For athletes, weight lifters, patients trying to lose weight and sustain their current muscle mass, they need to eat the equivalent number of grams of protein to their weight, every day.  To do this a person will have to know how many grams are in each serving of their current foods and if they aren't eating enough, they should add high protein, low carb protein shakes times before or after they work out or exercise.  A typical protein shake will have 15 to 20 grams per serving and less than 5-10 grams of carbohydrate. An average size  hamburger has about 20 grams of protein.  Add beans, peas, cheese, yogurt, butter, ricotta cheese, milk, eggs, custard, chicken, fish fillets, shrimp, and protein bars.  Be careful not to overeat carbohydrate with your protein which can cause you to gain fat, while you make muscle. Why do we need more protein on the days we work out, especially with weights?  Weight training is a great muscle builder, in fact it is the best form of exercise for increasing your muscle mass.  But why do people who engage in this type of activity require more protein than those who walk?  The answer is in the physiology of human muscle when stressed by weight training exercises.  When you work out with weights you put specific stress on your muscles, and during the hour or hours you engage in this type of exercise your muscles are broken down. That's right, initially you LOSE MUSCLE! The act of physical labor on the human body that uses weights against gravity causes stress on the muscle fibers and they are broken down, their components (all made of protein) are then excreted from the body.  We don't recycle much of the broken-down muscle! Instead, we must provide new building blocks, or amino acids that are circulated to the muscles from our diet, tp build back the muscle and even build more than was there the day before your exercised! This is the reason weight-lifters work out the top half of their body one day and let it rest (to build muscle) the next day while they exercise the bottom half of their body! Now let's talk about protein necessary for aerobic exercise like running or fast walking.  Distance running does not build muscles in the legs (or anywhere else), because this type of aerobic activity breaks down muscles that are working hard, but they are not stressed against gravity enough to build muscle, unless the runner is obese. Obese people who do or do not exercise have huge calves not because they work out, but because their legs have to hold up more weight than it is designed to support so their lower legs lift a fat body every day!  Runners, however, are usually slender, and their calves, quads, and hamstrings are slender too.  They do not build muscles while running.  The purpose of running is the production of endorphins for enjoyment, and the aerobic benefit to the cardiovascular system.  Running also burns alot calories so carbohydrates are needed to give the current muscles energy to run.  If you have ever looked at runners' legs, they are not “cut” like lifters legs, that show the muscle bellies of the legs, but they are narrow long and smooth. These people don't need as much protein as a lifter even though they are running every day, because they don't require as much protein to build back what they already have plus more protein to make the muscles bigger! They just must sustain the muscle mass that is being used.  Their need is in carbohydrates that give them energy to feed the muscle fibers. As people age, they lose muscle mass unless they take testosterone and eat a high protein diet. Left to nature their muscle mass decreases by 3-8 % EVERY YEAR between the ages of 40 and 90, unless you take a healthy dose of testosterone.  Aging adults are advised to eat more protein to prevent this catabolism but truly it doesn't work if you don't replace the hormone that signals muscles to grow which is testosterone. Remember that protein comes primarily from animal products but can also be found in many kinds of beans and peas, but not in any fruit. Remember to grow muscle you need.   ·      Protein in grams per day equal to your weight ·      Varied colorful diet with enough fat and carbohydrates. ·      Testosterone ·      Weight bearing exercise Another reason supplements might not be necessary: “Protein is in every food group except fruit,” Dr Webb says. Every human was born to eat a variety of foods to satisfy all their daily nutritional needs. The benefits of variety include the types of protein sources. Meat is an obvious source of protein, but “thankfully we can find protein in a multitude of plant-based sources, including lentils, tempeh, tofu, and beans,” Corwin says. Barkoukis, a researcher on protein and nutrition, advises that "Variety in diet is the best plan,” she says. “Beans are an amazing powerhouse," however they do not have all the amino acids the body needs to sustain life. “Not all protein sources are alike, or equivalent. Animal proteins are “complete” in that they contain all nine essential amino acids, while most plant proteins often have some—but not all—of those aminos that we cannot make in our bodies, so we must get them from a food source.” Quinoa has all the essential proteins; beans are incomplete and should be combined with other sources. For those who always ask how food work, here it is taken from a book called Human How do the proteins from foods, denatured or not, get processed into amino acids that cells can use to make new proteins? When you eat food the body's digestive system breaks down the protein into the individual amino acids, which are absorbed and used by cells to build other proteins and a few other macromolecules, such as DNA. Nutrition. 1.    In the mouth your saliva begins the metabolism of proteins with amylase that is produced in your salivary glands. Your chewing breaks protein down into small pieces to help digestion. 2.    In the stomach acids (Hydrochloric acid from gastric juices and an enzyme pepsin to break down protein. Proteins take longer in the stomach to break- down so you feel full longer when you eat proteins. 3.    The small intestine is the major player in protein digestion. Here the Pancreas secretes trypsin and chymotrypsin These enzymes break food protein into amino acids. 4.    At the end of your small intestine there are specialized cells that transport protein into the bloodstream, and it circulates to where it is stored to make vital enzymes and building blocks for when you haven't been eating. 5.    Amino acids are recycled to make new proteins (muscle, enzymes, skin hair, etc. Amino acids to build other biological molecules containing nitrogen.   “It is critical to maintain amino acid levels by consuming high-quality proteins in the diet, or the amino acids needed for building new proteins will be obtained by increasing protein destruction from other tissues (stealing protein from your muscles) within the body, especially muscle. This amino acid pool is less than one percent of total body-protein content. Thus, the body does not store protein as it does with carbohydrates (as glycogen in the muscles and liver) and lipids (as triglycerides in adipose tissue). such as DNA, RNA, and to some extent to produce energy.”  Eating protein is vital to life!

Today I'm going to cover the #1 remedy for heartburn, GERD, and acid reflux. We're told that the cause of acid reflux, heartburn, and GERD is too much acid. But, I've found that rather than the overproduction of acid, these issues are typically caused by an underproduction of acid. Two main conditions cause low stomach acid: hypochlorhydria and achlorhydria. Symptoms of both these conditions include acid reflux, heartburn, and GERD. Hydrochloric acid is there to help you break down food, absorb minerals and vitamins, and protect against pathogens. A deficiency in hydrochloric acid can lead to a myriad of health concerns. One of the side effects of antacids or other acid-suppressing medications is a loss of stomach acid. This can temporarily cause someone to feel better but can lead to other health issues. Top causes of low stomach acid: • Hypothyroidism • Poor diet • A suppressed immune system • Antacids • Low-salt diets • Potassium deficiency • Zinc deficiency • Iodine deficiency • Eating too frequently Betaine hydrochloride is the best natural remedy for heartburn, GERD, and acid reflux. However, you shouldn't take it if you have an ulcer, and don't take betaine hydrochloride on an empty stomach. Consuming the Healthy Keto diet® and doing intermittent fasting may also be beneficial. We learned a lot of things about survivability during COVID. Some were bad and some were good. Telemedicine is about the only good thing that came out of COVID. What we learned from the science is that there may be several versions and we need to do our own research. The following is an automated transcript. Please listen or watch the podcast for any questions. Dr. Matt Chalmers [00:00:01] You know, there's a lot of bad things that COVID brought us, but there are some good things that COVID brought us as well and one of those things was a bigger focus on health and wellness and immune function. Dr. Matt Chalmers [00:00:10] Now, there's a lot of really easy things you can do to really bolster your immune system, get your hormones where they're supposed to be. Including D3, D3 is not a vitamin it's a hormone. Your testosterone get all your hormones up where they're supposed to be. Get your nutrients in so that you can rebuild and regenerate and heal your omega three fatty acids, your, you know, your cholesterol and its your amino acids in make sure that you're getting all of your anti-inflammatory stuff in and cleaning the liver get your B vitamins in, you know, get those things in is that your body can actually function the way it's supposed to and it'll start rebuilding. Dr. Matt Chalmers [00:00:46] One of the biggest things you can take in is hydrochloric acid as a supplement, most of us get stressed out in our guts, quit producing hydrochloric acid, which is there to clean our food and digest it. Hydrochloric acid kills viruses, bacteria, parasites, amoebas, and all those types of things. Dr. Matt Chalmers [00:01:03] So if you know that you have stress or anxiety in your life, taking hydrochloric acid when you're eating is a great idea. The other fun thing about hydrochloric acid is that it breaks into hydrogen in chlorine, the hydrogen piece helps increase your PH, which is percent hydrogen. And as you're gets closer and closer to seven, the chances of cancer arterial sclerosis and things like that decrease. Dr. Matt Chalmers [00:01:26] And that chlorine fraction will help your body make its own hydrochloric acid but that's also how we make white blood cells, the chief enforcer or the chief killer cell of our immune system. The thing that goes out finds viruses, bacteria, and kills them yeah, it's got chlorine that's what it uses. Basically makes bleach and bleach is the virus of the bacteria to kill it. Dr. Matt Chalmers [00:01:46] So increasing your hydrochloric acid is a great thing to do, now be careful with that. You can't get the hydrochloric acid in your teeth so put the capsule or tablet your mouth, swallow it real quick otherwise that it's going to damage your teeth but it's a really, really important thing to take. Dr. Matt Chalmers [00:02:01] Now, the other big piece is consuming enough water. Now, here's the thing People always ask well, how much should I drink? If your pee is clear your good, the easy way to do that is just be like, okay, I want to drink 100% of my body weight now. So £250 I mean, drink 250 ounces of water throughout the day not once throughout the day. Dr. Matt Chalmers [00:02:19] Now, the thing that your your body actually does is it uses water like a dump truck. So you bring this clean water in and your body goes off and it's fantastic. It dumps all the waste that your body has into that water and then uses your urinary tract to excrete that water. The other thing you can do is you can use that water in your tissues you can bind all those nasty things and push it out through your sweat. And this is easy to show if anybody's ever drinking a bunch of gin and then went out and sweat a little bit the next day and all of a sudden you're like, Man, I smell just like gin. Yeah, your body's detoxing all that gin out of your body through your pores. So if you if your sweat stinks, it's probably because it's pushing out a lot of toxins. So we need to look at your diet we need to drink a lot more water and flush those toxins out. So the water is really, really beneficial as well. Dr. Matt Chalmers [00:03:07] Now, here's probably one of the biggest things that people blow off all the time Sleep there is no drug, there's no supplements, there's no exercise, there's nothing we can do that replaces sleep. So get high quality sleep, Set yourself a bedtime, set yourself a wake up time. If your body understands there's a routine, it will start to mimic that routine and it'll start setting your circadian rhythm to that routine. Dr. Matt Chalmers [00:03:32] So if you want to be asleep at 10:00, I'm just picking times, give be 11:00, whatever if you want to be asleep at 10:00, start getting ready, turn off all the lights. The lights stimulate your brain to stay awake when light hits your eyes, it increases serotonin, which wakes you up when the light's no longer in your eyes, your body produces melatonin, which helps you fall asleep. [00:03:54] So don't just walk into your bedroom, turn the lights off, flop down to bed at 10 p.m., and think, I'm going to fall right to sleep that's not how it's gonna work for lots of you. So 30 minutes or so before you're. You want to be asleep? Turn off all the lights, relax, calm down, start meditating, start thinking of, you know, relaxing my feet, relaxing my legs, relaxing my body, just breathing, focus on your breathing, focus on calming down, focus on relaxing, and just sit and just be for 20 or 30 minutes. Dr. Matt Chalmers [00:04:27] Now, if you want to start, if you want to take melatonin, you want to take peptides for growth hormone. You want you to take those 20 to 30 minutes before you're supposed to be asleep. So take all those things, then lay down, breathe, relax and calm down. This might not work the first day or the second day, but this will really help kind of put you into a circadian rhythm. Dr. Matt Chalmers [00:04:47] One of the best things you can do if you're trying to set that is go camping and leave all the electronics at home. The reason this works is because your brain sees the sun, sees the light from the sun, produces serotonin as the sun starts going down and there's less and less and less light your body starts producing melatonin like we just talked about this helps you kind of reset your circadian rhythm. Dr. Matt Chalmers [00:05:10] Now, here's the most important part as the sun's going down, start getting ready to go to sleep. So when the sun is down and it is dark, you can be laying down ready to go to sleep. If you do that for several days, you will reset your circadian clock and you can then take that thing home with you and you can then still go to bed at the same time and your body will reset so you get deep, restful sleep. Dr. Matt Chalmers [00:05:33] Now, having said that, if you've had COVID, especially if you've had a vaccine, a COVID vaccine, make sure you get a sleep study, because if you're not breathing properly at night for the damage to the Pons or whatever you're not going to get deepest sleep. You don't have enough oxygen we're going to have damage to the heart in the brain while you're trying to heal the heart in the brain. Dr. Matt Chalmers [00:05:53] So get a sleep, study, make sure you're breathing properly if you're not, get a CPAP, get a good jaw appliance, and good oral plants, get whatever it is you need to do to ensure that your oxygen is as high as possible at night. Dr Matt Chalmers [00:06:07] I was damaged from a vaccine which gave me all sorts of issues with sleep so I sleep with a CPAP, but because I have a CPAP, I was like, why not supercharge this thing? So I have an oxygen concentrator feeding oxygen to my CPAP blowing in my face. So I have a lot more oxygen than normal room air blowing in my face all night long, keeping my oxygen levels that 97 98% while I'm asleep. Dr Matt Chalmers [00:06:31] So there's lots of ways you guys can do this but that's the type of thing we need to bolster our immune system in our water and make sure our hormones where they're supposed to be, do some exercise to balance those things and make sure we're getting to sleep and we're sleeping on a regular basis. You know, this time I go to sleep this time I wake up that that circadian clock that will help you tremendously. Dr Matt Chalmers [00:06:53] There's a bunch of other things that make each one of those things better, and that's great. But make sure you start focusing on those things and you'll start to have your immune system get stronger. Check out Chalmers Pillarsofwellness.com for Wellness updates! The nanotechnology goes deep into skin, muscles, and fibers of your internal organs. It debilitates you and gives you a wide range of symptoms that can only be caused by a strong combination of poisoning and infection. Does Ivermectin work? Does MMS relieve the symptoms? Chlorine Dioxide - Sodium Chlorite and Hydrochloric acid, or citric acid. The government doesn't want you to know, but this stuff really does work. I've tried it. And people have gone to jail for promoting it worldwide.

Hydrochloric acid (HCL) plays a vital role in nutrient absorption as it helps your body to break down, digest, and absorb nutrients from the foods we consume. Stomach secretions are made up of hydrochloric acid, several enzymes, and a mucus coating that protects the lining of your stomach. HCL also eliminates bacteria and viruses in the stomach, protecting your body from infection. Low levels of hydrochloric acid can have a profound impact on the body's ability to properly digest and absorb nutrients.Join our private FitMom Lifestyle community HEREWant to schedule a strategy call with us? The Biggest Hidden Food Trigger for Hashimoto's and Autoimmune Diseases You Need to Know

Health Mysteries Solved

The Case:  Jessica has Hashimoto's Disease and can't seem to balance her thyroid Her doctors say her levels are fine but she's experiencing bloating, fatigue, hair loss, GI issues, and brain fog. She met with several doctors but none were able to address her concerns.    The Investigation When I met Jessica, I knew that we had to go beyond supporting the thyroid, we had to slow or stop the attack on her immune system. There are many triggers and Jessica had already cut out gluten. This was great but that told me we had to dig deeper.  I noticed that Jessica came from a family of farmers and had quite a bit of exposure. Figuring out her specific triggers was how we were going to solve her autoimmune mystery.  Autoimmune Triggers and Glyphosate I talk a lot about the four most common triggers for autoimmune disease and they are: stress, toxins, infections and foods. There is one thing that intersects with all four of these triggers - glyphosate. To explain it fully, I invited Jeffrey Smith on the show. He is the Founder and Executive Director of the Institute for Responsible Technology and Protect Nature Now. He's also a bestselling author, award-winning filmmaker, and an in-demand speaker. I could think of nobody better to explain what's going on for those with autoimmune disease and even for those who do not have an autoimmune disease.  What is Glyphosate? Glyphosate is the main ingredient found in Roundup (a herbicide) created by Monsanto which is now owned by Bayer. This chemical has been found (in a US lawsuit) to have contributed to Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and cancer. It has also been linked to more than 30 diseases. It was originally patented as a descaler for industrial builders because it chelates minerals. When it gets into the human body, it also grabs minerals from our system and prevents these minerals from doing their work in keeping us healthy.  How are we Exposed to Roundup and Glyphosate? Since the late 1990's, Roundup has been used on human food including genetically modified crops such as soy, corn, cotton, canola, sugar beets, and alfalfa. These GMO crops are engineered to be Roundup-ready which means they can withstand it. Other crops that are often sprayed are oats, wheat, mung beans, lentils, chickpeas, and even orchard fruits and grapes used for wine. It is found throughout the food chain.  Effects of Glyphosate Exposure There are many ways that glyphosate exposure can affect the body, including:  Mineral deficiencies (which can cause metabolic pathways to shut down) Acts as an antibiotic that kills off the beneficial bacteria in our microbiome.  Can break down the cellular walls of our gut, brain, kidneys, or other organs in the body Can damage and mutate the DNA which can lead to cancer.  Can damage the mitochondria which has been linked to chronic fatigue, cancer, aging, and several other diseases. Interferes with intercellular communication causing gap junctions (also linked to cancer). Blocks the production of good gut bacteria. Can throw off hormonal balance between estrogen and testosterone.  Acts as an endocrine disruptor.  Can cause epigenetic changes in gene expression in future generations. Suppresses cellular detoxification pathways and downgrades Nrf2. How Can Glyphosate Trigger Autoimmune Disease? Several of the effects listed above can then contribute to the development of an autoimmune disease. Jeffrey points to GMOs and BT toxin. BT toxin works by creating tiny holes in the insects and that is how it acts as an insecticide. While this can help grow those plans, it can also have the same effect on human cells. This is why he believes that leaky gut can be directly related to BT toxins and that leaky gut can lead to a variety of autoimmune diseases because the gut is now allowing bigger proteins that don't below in the bloodstream, directly into the bloodstream and the immune system starts to see these as an invader and attacks them. The thing is that when the  immune system attacks them, it can also by accident attack our other tissues.  For example, in the case of Hashimoto's, the immune system is attacking the thyroid because it's mistaking it as an intruder. Because the gap junctions are permanently open due to leaky gut, more and more proteins get into the bloodstream and this creates a lot of inflammation.  Scientific studies have found that lab animals fed GMOs will develop inflammation and issues with the immune system, leaky gut, and the destruction of the good bacteria in the gut. Diseases That May Be Linked to Glyphosate and GMO Foods Jeffrey shares that correlational charts show a rise of specific diseases in parallel with the increased use of glyphosate on soy and corn in the US as well as the increased prevalence of genetically modified soy and corn. The specific diseases that appear in the correlation include: Inflammatory Bowel Disease  Deaths from intestinal infection Liver disease Various cancers (liver, bile duct, kidney, breast) Autism ADHD  Deaths from Alzheimer's Deaths from Senile Dementia Deaths from Parkinson's  Anxiety Suicide by overdosing  Schizophrenia Celiac disease Insomnia and other Sleep Disorders Skin problems Birth defects Eye problems Diabetes Obesity  Stroke and Hypertension Anemia While of course correlation does not prove causation, Jeffery says that he's seen the correlations first hand. He recently surveyed 3256 people who switched to an organic diet and they reported that they felt better. In fact, 85.2% said their digestive issues were resolved. They also reported improvements in fatigue, weight problems, brain fog, anxiety, depression, food sensitivities and allergies. In addition, 21.4% of respondents reported improvements with their autoimmune diseases.  Additional Threats from Engineered Microbes We often focus on the microbes in our gut but the atmosphere is full of microbes. And, all of these different microbes belong to microbiomes. For example, there is a microbiome in the dirt, in trees, in other organisms, and in the atmosphere. The threat to these microbiomes (and our own) comes from genetically engineered microbes. Microbes can mutate, swap genetic material, and travel around the world. This is how an engineered microbe created for one purpose could end up inside the DNA of hundreds or thousands of other types of microbes and enter the ecosystems with unknown effect.  Jeffrey is trying to stop the release of engineered microbes and has created a film about the threat. You can watch “Don't Let the Gene Out of the Bottle” on his website protectnaturenow.com How to Avoid Glyphosate, BT and GMO Foods Jeffrey gets asked all the time about how to avoid these harmful chemicals. Is going organic enough given the exposure so many of us have already experienced? Jeffrey says it is possible to heal from GMO and Glyphosate exposure but it's more than just switching to organic. You will likely need to remineralize, restore your leaky gut, heal the mitochondria and rebalance hormones (especially if there are sleep issues causing anxiety or depression). The good news is that reducing the GMO and Glyphosate burden has helped people regain their health. He suggests tracking how you feel before you switch to organic and then each day on a clean diet.  If going organic feels like a financial challenge, he outlines a few areas to focus and a few ways to reconsider your budget for health and food. There are also certain foods to avoid because they have the highest concentration of Glyphosate or BT toxin. Are GMO and Glyphosate Related to Peanut Allergies? There could be a connection between GMO soy and the increase in peanut allergies as these have a cross reactivity. Plus, genetically modified soy has trypsin inhibitors. Trypsin makes it possible for the body to break down certain proteins including peanut proteins. Genetically modified soy has seven times more trypsin inhibitors compared to natural soy. When these proteins are not broken down properly, they remain in the stomach long enough to create an allergic reaction. Glyphosate and BT (which may damage the mitochondria, destroy the microbiome, and cause leaky gut) can also contribute to an allergic reaction.  Testing for Glyphosate and BT Exposure It is possible to find out if you have toxins like Glyphosate and BT in your system. There are urine tests available. If you plan to detox, it can be helpful to do a test before you start and then again afterward to get a sense of the change in toxin levels in the body.    Next Steps in Solving Jessica's Health Mystery After spending 2 hours with Jessica reviewing her health history and diet, I saw that she came from a long family of farmers and has not only been exposed to many herbicides on the farm, she also has never really eaten organic foods. She was also gluten-free but was eating quite a bit of conventional corn and soy.  Our first step was to clean up her diet by switching to organic, non-GMO corn and lowering how much of it she was eating. She also switched her other foods to organic.  We also had to support her gut and liver. We did this with a cleanse, as well as microbial nutrients like GI MicrobX and FC Cidal  and supported her digestion with digestive enzymes and Hydrochloric acid. We also supported the healing of her gut with Glutamine and EnteroVite, as well as probiotics. After the gut cleanse, I wanted to make sure that we restored the microbiome because glyphosate can be so damaging. I recommended R's Koso. This is a Japanese fermented drink made from more than 100 different vegetables, fruits, and plants that I find delivers great results. It's like a natural prebiotic and probiotic and a great way to rebalance and continue to support the microbiome. By the way, I have a code for anyone that may want to try it and save 10%, it's INNA10. Use it at checkout on their website. We also had to help out her liver so we did a Push Catch Detox followed by 3 months of phase 2 support using NAC. Happy Ending In just 3 months of the new protocol, Jessica was feeling much better and her brain fog was gone. Eliminating Health Mysteries For Jessica, we were able to find that missing piece of the health puzzle and help her regain her health. 00:00 - Intro01:33 - We're in an muriatic acid shortage. Thanks, COVID.02:21 - Two specialty acids: modified Muriatic Acids for less fuming: AcidBlue and AcidMagic. 03:06 - Muriatic acid is a diluted form of Hydrochloric acid (HCl). It is 31.45% HCl or less.04:14 - Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) is sold in 38.5% concentration. It is comparable in dosing to standard 31.45% HCl. It takes just 2% more sulfuric acid to equal muriatic by volume.09:36 - Sodium bisulfate (NaHSO4) is sold in 93.2% concentration. It is also known as "dry acid", or in pool retail stores, "pH down" or "alkalinity down". It is safer to handle than liquid acid, but needs to be pre-dissolved before adding to the pool.11:48 - Let's talk about sulfates (SO4--) or (SO3--).12:05 - One gallon of 38.5% sulfuric acid leaves behind 47.1 ppm of sulfates in 10,000 gallons.13:19 - One pound of 93.2% of sodium bisulfate leaves behind 9.6 ppm of sulfates in 10,000 gallons, plus salt.14:58 - even in perfectly LSI-balanced water, if you have high enough sulfates, you can still have etching of cement. The sulfate ion (SO3--) can become the dominant ion and kicks carbonate off of calcium (Ca++) and create calcium sulfate.  Enough calcium sulfate can precipitate a sharp crystalline scale.18:08 - The only way to reduce sulfates is to drain and dilute.  Unless you have Reverse Osmosis (R.O.) available. If you're going to use sulfuric or sodium bisulfate, you must regularly schedule dilutions to avoid sulfate problems.19:53 - Sulfates and metals can combine to create that infamous 'rotten egg' smell. We think of it as sulfur, but it's usually iron sulfate or some variant.21:08 - The third alternative for pH reduction is injecting carbon dioxide (CO2). It reduces pH but does not reduce alkalinity. In fact, alkalinity tends to rise due to excess lye from chlorine.22:18 - Acid only introduces more CO2 (to reduce pH) is to burn through alkalinity and convert it into carbonic acid.  And Joe thought I was asking a trick question. There is no CO2 in acid.24:39 - One pound of CO2 is equivalent to 32.8 fl.oz. of standard Muriatic Acid for pH correction.27:08 - Summary------------------------------------Connect with Orenda TechnologiesWebsite: https://www.orendatech.comBlog: https://blog.orendatech.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/OrendaTechnologiesFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/orendatech/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/orendatechnologies/

Functional medicine practitioners often take a “Foods First” approach, recommending dietary modifications to improve health. However, for those with low stomach acid, diet alone may not be enough to ensure adequate nutrition. Low stomach acid can impair digestive ability, causing nutritional deficiencies even in those individuals consuming an optimal diet. This article will focus on the main digestive chemical associated with the stomach, hydrochloric acid. The causes of low stomach acid and the associated symptoms will be covered. In addition, natural treatment options for low stomach acid, such as betaine HCL and herbal bitters will be discussed. What is Digestion? Digestion is the process of breaking food down into particles small enough so that the nutrients in the food can be absorbed and then transported throughout the body. Digestion begins in the mouth with the mechanical process of chewing along with salivary enzymes that begin the digestive process. This process is continued as the food passes into the stomach, activating the release of hydrochloric acid. The bolus of food then passes to the small intestines where the majority of digestion takes place. The useful nutrients are digested and absorbed and the waste products are sent through the large intestines for evacuation as feces. Why Does the Stomach Contain Hydrochloric Acid? The stomach is a naturally acidic environment, especially following a meal, with a normal pH value of 3 and an absence of stomach acid (achlorhydria) is obtained with a pH > 7.1 This acidity comes from the hydrochloric acid that is secreted by the parietal cells in the lining of the stomach. Healthy stomach acid levels serve as an immune system barrier, providing a first line of defense against unwanted bacterial or microbial invaders that enter the stomach. Hydrochloric acid is also necessary for the digestion of proteins. Proteins are a conglomeration of amino acids folded together into different shapes. Stomach acid serves to denature (unfold) the proteins and expose the bonds that hold the amino acids together. These bonds can then be cleaved by pepsin, which breaks the protein down into smaller, easier to digest, amino acids. The formation of pepsin from pepsinogen is dependent on sufficient stomach acid levels as well. Hydrochloric acid is also responsible for deactivating the enzymes of salivary amylase as it enters the stomach and for stimulating the release of cholecystokinin in the small intestines. Both processes are essential for healthy digestive function. Certain vitamins and minerals depend on hydrochloric acid to liberate them from their carriers, such as vitamin B12 and calcium. Having low stomach acid levels can impair all of these functions. What causes low stomach acid levels? Factors that contribute to low stomach acid include: Chronic stress Aging Poor diet Infections Medication use Stress—Stress impairs digestion. Chronic stress may decrease the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach due to associated nutrient deficiencies.2 Stress also causes the vagus nerve to lose its proper tone. The vagus nerve is a major part of the parasympathetic nervous system, and it is deeply involved in stomach acid production. With chronic stress it loses its ability to fire properly which disrupts normal stomach acid production. Aging—Low levels of stomach acid following a meal are more common with aging. Studies that compared stomach acid levels in young individuals (mean age 25) versus older individuals (mean age 75) found that older individuals experienced low levels of stomach acid following a meal for a greater length of time than their younger counterparts. It took 89 minutes for the elderly participants versus 42 minutes for the younger participants to regain normal stomach acid levels (pH 3.0) following a “standard meal”.1, 3,

I think it's safe to say most of us have been Just a little stressed and anxious over the past five months. Stress is detrimental for your gut health! Even brief exposures to stress can change the microbiome significantly, and long term stress can lead to things like increased intensional permeability (leaky gut)The human gut is amazing, so much so that its referred to as the " second Brain" So it's so important that we talk about how this can effect our gut. That's right the brain and the gut are connected!! Did you know that your gut has its own nervous system called the enteric nervous system ? It is responsible for sending signals to produce things like Hydrochloric-acid(HCL) and Digestive enzymes which help us break down and digest our food so it can be absorbed. Without these two things our stomach cannot break down the food that we eat(especially proteins and fat), leaving it to just sit stagnant especially protein....creating inflammation. When we are anxious and stressed the Signals to make these key enzymes are missed resulting in compromised digestion. Ever notice when you are stressed you tend to have more digestive issues than normal?? Yup, that's because it's all connected!!Scientists have found that gut bacteria produce key neurotransmitters such as serotonin, Dopamine and GABA which play a key role in moods.  90% of Serotonin is actually made in the gut and directly correlates to GI motility. This mean too much can lead to diarrhea and too little , constipation. Melatonin is a hormone made in the brain that is responsible for controlling our circadian rhythm aka sleep. However, research suggest that the gut synthesizes 500x higher melatonin levels than the brain. So if your guts off, you likely aren't sleeping either. What can you do:- Eat an anti-inflammatory diet with adequate plant fiber- Set time aside for you, journal , meditate, read....less stimulation - Think about it changing your workouts, remember high intensity workouts will cause you to produce more cortisol. So if you are trying to manage anxiety and heal the gut, try more yoga, pilates and light walksStay tuned for more tips and check out @erinlynnewellness for more tips

Today, I am blessed to have here with me, 3-Time Canadian Natural Bodybuilding Champion, Wade Lightheart. He is one of the world's premier authorities on Natural Nutrition and Training Methods. Having majored in Sports Science at the University of New Brunswick, he has authored numerous books on health, nutrition, and exercise which have sold in over 80 countries. Wade is sought out by athletes and high-performance oriented individuals worldwide for his advice on optimizing their health and fitness levels. Wade travels the world to spread his life mission of helping others achieve a richer experience of life through daily practice of rituals that lead you to true health, real wealth, and peace of mind. For years Wade watched and learned from his mentors, heroes, and coaches online. Today it blows his mind that he is routinely featured online as a guest expert and as a keynote speaker at health and wellness seminars worldwide. It's truly amazing! In this episode, Wade Lightheart opens the show revealing intimate details of his story, including the inspiration behind his bodybuilding career. Despite not following the keto diet, Wade explains why the keto diet may work well for you. For instance, the keto diet works well for sugar addicts and people who are relatively sedentary. Wade also explains the solutions to sluggish bile and why having your digestive system in tiptop shape is essential for a healthy life. Tune in as Wade describes the inspiration behind his product, kApex, and the benefits you will experience with regular consumption. [00:20] About Wade Lightheart Wade began his journey to health, fitness, and spiritual awakening at 15 when he was faced with his sister's terminal illness. Wade began lifting weights, studying nutrition, and looking for a deeper meaning to life. Eventually, Wade realized he needed his digestive system to work in order for his food to work properly. Wade sets out to educate people on bettering their digestive systems. Virtually every single person in North America has a compromised digestive system. 12% of emergency hospital visits are gastrointestinal related issues.   [12:50] Why Keto May Work Well For You All of us are sugar addicts. The cascade of effects that happen when we consume sugar is similar to drugs. People are sedentary today, and dopamine is constantly hitting us. Keto works well for people who are addicted to sugar and those who are pretty sedentary.   [21:00] The Solutions to Sluggish Bile Bile production consumes lots of our energy, and our liver does all of it! The gallbladder is a storage duct for that bile. Bile will also help remove toxins. Make sure to add electrolytes and increase water consumption when going on a keto diet. Ask yourself, what are you feeling? Keep notes and utilize real-time feedback.   [27:15] Make Sure Your Digestive System Is In Tiptop Shape Regardless of what dietary practice you have, your digestive system needs to be in phenomenal shape. How well are you able to transport fats to the cells to be burnt? There are five basic stages of digestion: Taste and chewing Stomach enzymes break down the food Hydrochloric acid comes in – some enzymes are activated, and it disinfects our food from parasites, viruses and other pathogens Food enters the intestine Defecation The more organic food people eat, the more bacteria they typically have. No one knows what we are naturally designed to have in terms of bacteria. Most people are adversely affected by GMO foods. People who eat different diets will have vastly different microbiomes.   [45:20] How Constipation and Diarrhea Are Similar There is a restriction inside the colon that causes people to be constipated or have diarrhea. This is where detox and herbal cleansing will help. Fasting will also assist with constipation and diarrhea. There could also be parasite issues. To learn more, Wade recommends reading Parasite Rex: Inside the Bizarre World of Nature's Most Dangerous Creatures.   [48:25] The Benefits of kApex   Wade used to have fat in his stool. His body does not break down fats very well. kApex will help break down fat and improve digestion for people following a ketogenic, paleo, or low-carb diet. Some other benefits of taking kApex are lower inflammation, reducing bad cholesterol, an increase in energy, and improved mitochondrial health. You can find kApex here: https://bioptimizers.com/ketokamp (use code ketokamp10)   [58:00] Difference Between MassZymes and kApex   MassZymes was born out of the 15,000 clients Wade had all over the world, and the digestive problems they suffered from. MassZymes will transform 1 gram of protein into 3 grams. Plus, it will lead to stronger and healthier digestion. There are 17 different types of enzymes. If you’re plant-based, you’ll want MassZymes instead of kApex. By adding MassZymes, you’ll recover so much faster after workouts or major surgeries.   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Check out Wade’s Website Follow Wade: Instagram Twitter Find BiOptimizers Follow BiOptimizers: Instagram Facebook YouTube Buy kApex (use code ketokamp10) Get Healing is Voltage: The Handbook Get Parasite Rex: Inside the Bizarre World of Nature's Most Dangerous Creatures Buy Wade Lightheart’s Books // R E S O U R C E S ➡️Check out my Keto Kickstart Kit: http://bit.ly/2okbyUu ➡️Get Your Keto Kamp Apparel: http://www.ketokampgear.com *Some Links Are Affiliates* // F O L L O W ▸ instagram | @thebenazadi | http://bit.ly/2B1NXKW ▸ facebook | /thebenazadi | http://bit.ly/2BVvvW6 ▸ twitter | @thebenazadi http://bit.ly/2USE0so ▸ email | ben@ketokamp.com Disclaimer: This podcast is for information purposes only. If you have constipation, indigestion, gas, bloating, or stomach pain, this video is for you. I'm actually going to break down each part of your digestive tract and explain a little bit about it. Breaking down the digestive tract: Stomach — Acid is the key thing in your stomach. It helps you break down protein, absorb certain minerals, and kill pathogens. Many people do not have enough strong acid in their stomach. To support healthy stomach acid levels, consider: • Hydrochloric acid (betaine hydrochloride) • Salt • Potassium • Apple cider vinegar • Kombucha tea Consider avoiding: • Antacids • Calcium carbonate Bile — Bile is made by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. Bile helps you break down fats. Supporting bile production can also help with bloating and belching. To support bile production, consider: • Bile salts • Beet tops • Ginger • Artichokes • Lemon • Milk thistle • Choline Consider avoiding: • Decreasing friendly bacteria • Taking out the gallbladder if possible • A fatty liver situation Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 51 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional & natural methods. There are many digestive enzyme supplements out there but which ones are the best and what is the best way to use them? In this article, I’ll be covering my 3 favorite digestive enzyme supplements and the way I use them in my practice. I’ll also dispel some of the myths and misconceptions about digestive enzyme supplements. Digestive enzymes are an important part of my practice because most of my patients have gut issues that are connected to their thyroid and autoimmune problems. I have found them to be a vital part of my gut healing protocols. Let’s jump in and cover the details of each product I recommend. Betaine HCL Supplemental betaine HCl helps to optimize hydrochloric acid levels in people with low stomach acid and can help to improve digestive function and comfort in patients of all ages. Many symptoms of digestive distress such as acid reflux, heartburn, gas, bloating or nausea after eating may be due to abnormally low or non-existent gastric acid secretion (hypochlorhydria and achlorhydria, respectively.) Endogenous HCl production naturally decreases with age but other factors such as illness, highly processed and acidic diets, overuse of antacids and high stress physiology in general may impair the body’s ability to generate healthy HCl levels. In addition to impaired digestion, hypochlorhydria has been associated with bacterial overgrowth, enteric infection, low vitamin B12 levels and an increased risk of gastric neoplasms. Hydrochloric acid is secreted by parietal cells in response to the presence of food in the stomach. HCl activates the conversion of pepsinogen to pepsin, an enzyme required for the digestion of proteins. Gastric HCl also works directly on protein molecules to assist in their breakdown and helps to separate nutrients from their carrier compounds (e.g. releasing vitamin B12 from protein molecules, and cleaving calcium from carbonate.) By helping to support efficient breakdown of proteins, betaine hydrochloride can help to prevent large peptide molecules from entering the intestines where they may contribute to inflammation and leaky gut pathologies. Adequate HCl levels in the stomach also help to minimize food sensitivities. In one study, 25% of patients taking acid-lowering drugs for dyspeptic disorders exhibited increased IgE formation towards commonly ingested foods. The same study suggested that food allergenicity could be reduced up to 10,000-fold by enhanced gastric digestion. Gastric hydrochloric acid plays a role in immune defense by destroying foodborne pathogens and microbes such as Helicobacter pylori, implicated in the pathogenesis of stomach ulcers. Although stomach ulcers are typically associated with excess acid production and treated with acid-blocking drugs, insufficient gastric HCl may, in fact, be a predisposing factor in ulcerative pathology. H. pylori is, of course, only one biological organism that multiplies in the absence of sufficient gastric HCL levels. Many species of bacteria and fungi overpopulate in the high gastric pH environment caused by low hydrochloric acid production, contributing in turn to a variety of metabolic and dysbiotic symptoms both within and beyond the digestive tract. Based on molecular weight, Betaine HCl is composed of 76.26% betaine and only 23.74% HCl. Hence we propose that the betaine component of the supplement may play a key role in its functionality. Nutritionally, betaine (also known as trimethylglycine) is obtained from beets and other sources—either as betaine directly or as synthesized endogenously from choline-containing foods. By serving as a methyl donor, betaine helps to support proper liver function, cellular replication and liver detoxification. Betaine also serves as a critical cofactor in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine. Betaine is well known to help reduce high homocysteine, associated with increased risk of Alzheimers and cardiovascular disease.

If you are interested in scheduling a consultation with Dr. Rutherford please visit http://PowerHealthConsult.com Hi, Dr. Martin Rutherford here certified functional medicine practitioner and other things. We're gonna talk about one of my favorite subjects today, so and and and then something you're gonna, like your really weird or whatever it is, but we're gonna talk about the gallbladder today. This is like there's like the continuation of the functional medicine back to basics. Again, for those of you who may just have seen gallbladder and I don't know. Yet what we're titling this or for those of the you who are just looking at gallbladder? Maybe this is the first time this is one in a series of presentations on what classic functional medicine should look like and and and and the emphasis on the is on the fact that there's, a hierarchy to functional medicine and the way it Should be approached, and we've, been through that hierarchy from the very beginning of how to even evaluate a patient as to whether they should be a patient to what the basics are to to. We're, called the the priorities of blood sugar and oxygen, and those have you been watching know what I'm talking about. So we've gone through the we've gone through the intestines. We've gone through leaky gut. We've gone through chemical sensitivities, pancreas stomach. We've gone through ulcers. We've gone through all that in an organized fashion. There is a hierarchy as to the way you should address a person's overall case, and there's and there's, a specific hierarchy within the framework of that as to how you should address a gut function. There's like 35 different things that can cause gut issues and a lot of people today know Co, functional medicine, as I do the former program or the flybar program for the gut, and I got on the autoimmune, Paleo diet and I took a Bunch of supplements that I got on dr. so-and-so this thing for leaky gut or SIBO or whatever it is, and didn't work. So what's? Going on what's, going on as a person, didn't, follow the hierarchy and in hierarchy of trying to get an intestines under control. Any other things I just got mentioning there's, a couple of major major players that if you miss them, you could do all the all the intestinal permeability you want. You can do all the liver flushes you want. You can do all of the all of the SIBO diets and supplements and all the time and you're, not getting better ever and one of the two biggest things and those have you been watching know what the other one is. Hydrochloric acid. In the stomach, I wanted two biggest things: if you don't fix, if you have it, you don't fix it, you don't know you have it to fix it. You it's missing and you don't fix that. How can you fix that? We'll talk about it? Okay, then you're. Not getting better is the gallbladder. The gallbladder is like ginormously important to us. You wouldn't think so with a gajillion gallbladder is coming out. I think it's. I think it's, God. How much is it seventy five thousand? I forget. I actually have notes in front of me today. I don't, usually use notes, okay, but the gallbladder to me is so huge. It's, so important that I really want to. I'm, not good at statistics and stuff, like that. I'm, not great at numbers so, but I really wanted you to get the whole idea of what's going on now. Most of you know, and so I'm gonna - be looking down and reading off my notes. So if that looks unprofessional, then too bad that's, where we're gonna, do it so so is it gallbladder? Do okay,

Although the transcription is largely accurate, in some cases it is incomplete or inaccurate due to inaudible passages or transcription errors. If you are interested in scheduling a consultation with Dr. Rutherford please visit http://PowerHealthConsult.com Hi, Dr. Martin Rutherford, we're next segment of functional medicine back to basics. Last time we were talking about stomach and it's and its place in the great hierarchy of taking care of patients with functional medicine. The the concept that I keep hoping to get to you is that there are a lot of moving pieces to this there's, an organization to it. You really need to in the beginning, when you attack a case kind of get a feel for what all the moving parts are for. That particular patient is what we've been talking. We've talked about that there's. What we've, been talking about up until now, and and now we are at the pancreas and pancreas is kind of interesting. Most people know pancreas relative to somebody who drinks too much acute pancreatitis. Most people know that that's, not a good thing, and that if you hear that you start making plans and not always, but it's, you know when their pancreas gets that bad. It's. It's. You, it couldn't, frequently be a life in death situation. Most people know pancreas with diabetes, particularly diabetes type 1. People are getting real familiar with their pancreas, but it's. Interesting. We don't normally see the pancreas being a huge huge player in our world as far as the necessity to start throwing pancreatic enzymes on it are our bovine pancreatic tissue at it or anything like that, because of the way that we dressed cases, The way that classic functional medicine should address cases symptoms of the pancreas. I have a cheat sheet here. Okay, so difficulty digesting roughage our fiber okay and it's, not so not after protein. It's, a lot of it's very similar symptoms to lack of hydrochloric acid, which we talked about last week, and you get these symptoms after you. But you get these symptoms after you digest a starch, not after its starch fibers. Not after you digest protein, okay, so difficulty digesting roughage and fiber indigestion and fullness lasting two to four hours after eating, because you're, not digesting those the roughage or the fiber pain, tenderness, soreness on the left side of the rib cage. Okay, so pancreas actually goes from about here over. Can you see the kidneys I'm, not sure. If you can see this, it actually goes from here over all the way to here kind of behind the stomach, and so you can get it. Excessive passage of gas can be a number of things, and but certainly if your pancreatic enzymes aren't doing their job, then you can get excessive passage of gas, nausea vomiting you get nausea and vomiting from the stomach. You can get it from the liver. You can get it from anything that stimulates your vagus nerve, but you can get nausea vomiting from the pancreas, so it's, not like. Oh. I got nausea vomiting it's, the pancreas okay. It's like you got to start looking around, go okay, it's. Can I do. I have no stomach problems. Pancreas problems, stool, undigested, foul-smelling mucous like and greasy and poorly formed, and and I'll, maybe kind of a little bit like the gallbladder. Okay, it could kind of float. You're gonna find out why, in a second, because the gallbladder and the pancreas kind of work together and when one stops working the other one kind of stops working a frequent loss of appetite. These are the most common symptoms of gallbladder function. A lot of them are similar to symptoms of not having enough hydrochloric acid, and I tell you that not to confuse you, not enough. Hydrochloric acid talked about in the last segment is usually usually due to stomach, not having enough hydrochloric acid in your stomach,

He explains what is hydrochloric acid and how to build hydrochloric acid inside our stomach. This is the most important fluid inside our body and without this acid in the stomach, our body will have a lot of problems. The stomach acid needs to be very strong (acidic) preferably in the range 1-3. If the stomach is less acidic it will not release pepsin (which is an enzyme for chemical reactions and is responsible for the breakdown of proteins). This leads to bloating, gas, indigestion, acid reflux, lack of protein breakdown, and diminished mineral absorption. The 3 major health benefits of hydrochloric acid are to help breakdown proteins, absorb minerals, kill microbes. Junk food, stress, antiacids, diarrhea, vomiting can cause low stomach acid. What is the big difference in using a normal thermometer to take my temperature and checking my basal temperature? You said that the morning temperature is most accurate, so I have been sticking to this. Angela In Rochester   Q3 - 39:32 One of my really good friends became vegetarian and her thyroid seems to be improving. She says that this has to do with the hormones in meat. Have you heard of people successfully healing their thyroid by cutting out meat, and if so, why does it work? Alison In Iowa   Q4 - 44:32 I was just talking to my mom the other day, and we were talking about how it seems like there is a sudden onset of thyroid issues these days! Until the past 5-10 years, neither of us remember it being so common to have thyroid issues. What is our culture doing to cause so many thyroid issues all of a sudden? It seems like an epidemic. -Carrie in Williamsburg.   Q5 - 48:57 I’ve switched form synthroid to armor thyroid and I got this nasty rash all over my chest and neck.  I am racking my brain to figure out what is going on, and the only thing I can figure is my medication switch or just my thyroid in general because every issue I have seems to relate back to this darn thyroid! Have you ever discovered a life hack just when you needed to hear it? The timing and the solution was just so perfect that you acted immediately and it has stuck with you ever since? You’ve also probably seen biohacks that involved expensive equipment that is only for the most hardcore biohackers. Today, I’ve got an interesting episode on Biohacks that actually work. Based on my own experiments and experience I’ve created 39 actionable biohacks that YOU can start doing today! The best part? They don’t involve super expensive equipment or things that aren’t exactly backed by solid science. Okay, so why I am talking about Biohacking? I watched a funny video by JP Sears Biohacking Secrets – Ultra Spiritual Life where he’s making fun of Biohacking Secrets. It’s hilarious, . There are way too many people out there taking the biohacking concept and making fools of themselves trying to be cool or cutting edge. But I actually like the term Biohacking. I look at biohackers as a group of people who didn’t fit into the “bro” fitness scene but they are still interested in performing their best physically and mentally. It’s easy to see how all this health hacking talk could come off as complete quackery like the . But it’s also true that biohacking can greatly improve your mental and physical health–if you choose the right science-based strategies. So, what is Biohacking? It’s the art and science of controlling your biology and different parts of your body, influencing physiology in different ways to get the desired result.  In a nutshell, being the best you can be — Life Optimization! And who doesn’t aspire to become a better version of themselves? That’s why you’re reading this blog, right? That’s exactly why I’m not against Biohacking. Biohacking can be the tool to help you grow and reach our maximum potential. It can also be used to close those gaps in your life. Many of you have success financially but are struggling with your health or relationships. Or you’re physically fit but you struggle with financial or communication issues. Whatever it is— I want you to think about optimizing your life and strive to be fit in all areas of your life with these 39 practical biohacking tips. Let’s start with:   6 Fitness Hacks 1. Maximize your gains If you want to maximize the amount of muscle that you’re building make sure you alternate every month between strength zone reps, 4-6 reps then the following month you would use 8-12 reps for your major exercises. So, alternate between a month of strength training and a month of hypertrophy training. And here’s the major exercises that you should do: bench presses, deadlifts, single leg deadlifts, pull ups, overhead presses, squats, Bulgarian split squats, etc. 2. Gymnastic strength training There is a lot of power in using gymnastic strength training. Incorporate these type of exercises into your workout to improve your strength, power, and body control. You’ll notice that these moves make you focus in a way sitting that on a machine or even doing a bench press does not, as there is more skill involved.  Think L-sits, ring dips, muscle ups, Jefferson curls, back bridges, planches, front levers, dragon flags and more. Check out my episode on gymnastic strength training with Christopher Sommer, ! Incidentally, Tim Ferris wrote about Christopher Sommer’s approach to gymnastic strength training in his new book Tools Of Titans. I’ve been a student of gymnastic strength training for the past 2 years now and credit it with helping me get back in shape after a car accident herniated 3 of my cervical discs. 3. Eccentric isometrics This is a great way to get more out of your exercises. It enhances the quality of movement, thereby increasing performance and reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. This is one of the most effective techniques for increasing strength and hypertrophy. Something I’ve been experimenting with is using eccentric isometrics to get better at gymnastic strength training exercises. I’ll be doing videos of how to do those soon. In the meantime, I did two interviews with Dr. Joel Seedman, where we went deep into this topic.   4. Isometric holds You may already be doing this with planks but you can do isometric holds in other exercises such as chin-up, bicep curls, just to name a few. Start using them in your workouts and during reps. It’s going to help you get stronger and build more muscle and it also takes a tremendous amount of control to hold a position. Here are 5 of my favorite isometric exercises: 5. Build Stronger Toes, Feet and Ankles Strong and flexible feet, ankles, and calves provide a base for stable movement and are essential for performing your daily activities without pain or strain. Dr. Joe Seedman has revolutionized my thinking on this topic and I started doing his toe foot and ankle exercises and I’ve been getting great results. What do I mean? Better balance, fewer knee issues, stronger calf muscles and toes that actually move. Here are a few exercises for you to try: 6. Go barefoot (or use barefoot shoes) Going barefoot strengthens the stabilizing muscles of the foot and ankle and makes them stronger and also helps to improves muscle alignment. This all means a stronger body, less joint pain, better posture, more mobility, greater health, and greater freedom. Just make sure you perform the toe, foot and ankle exercises above or your feet may not be ready for barefoot workouts. If workout at a gym and you can’t go barefoot then I suggest using these recommended barefoot shoes. (take the insole out and order 1/2 size smaller) 7 Nutrition, Digestion and Detoxification Hacks 1. Chew your food slowly Chewing breaks your food down from large particles into smaller particles that are more easily digested. This also makes it easier for your intestines to absorb nutrients from the food particles as they pass through. You also release a digestive enzyme called salivary amylase that starts to break down starch in your mouth. If you’re not consciously chewing your food you’re missing out on something that is free and something that really improves your digestive health. Another bonus is that you’ll be less likely to over eat by giving your body time to register fullness. 2. Eat mostly whole foods We’re starting to learn that the quality of what we eat is so important and we’re much better off eating whole foods. None of us are perfect and we live in the modern world, so obviously every meal and snack you have will not be made up of whole foods unless you’re super strict. However, if you aim to eat whole foods for most of your meals for most of the week it will go a long way. Whole foods also make it harder to digest all the calories contained in them versus processed foods. And whole foods are loaded with vitamins, minerals and more. 3. Take glutamine for gas, bloating, loose stools, etc. If you’re experiencing excessive flatulence with a foul smell, it’s usually a sign of an unhealthy digestive system. I would recommend that you try to use trans-analyl glutamine for gas, bloating or any other digestive problem to see if it helps. Glutamine is one of the 20 naturally occurring amino acids in dietary protein. It is considered a conditionally essential amino acid (being elevated to essential during periods of disease and muscle wasting). Glutamine is known to help the immune system as well as the gastrointestinal tract. I’ve personally used it when I was suffering some digestive issues and it helped clear them up. Try it! *My pick:  4. Take digestive enzymes for digesting food problems If you have trouble digesting your food you can also take digestive enzymes. We all have Hydrochloric acid in our stomach and that helps digest the proteins and the harder to digest foods. However, some of us have low levels and I used to have a hard time digesting steak and chicken and taking Betaine HCL has helped to improve that. However, there are many other enzymes (technically HCl is an acid and not a true enzyme) that help to digest fats and starches. These other enzymes can help if there’s an issue digesting the other foods. That’s why I recommend the supplement below. It contains HCl as well as many other enzymes that will help you improve your digestion and to get the most from your food. *My pick: 5. Use organic body care products and toiletries Here’s something I want you to do when you’re home. Look at your shampoo bottle and read all the ingredients and a rule of thumb if it doesn’t sound like something you would eat, don’t put it on your scalp or body. Why? Because our skin is actually an organ and it lets things through. Things like the chemicals that can disrupt your hormones. While not as important as the big three (exercise, nutrition and sleep) I’ve read enough to motivate me to take exposure to potentially deleterious man-made chemicals seriously. Using organic toiletries minimizes your exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals. An added bonus is that these toiletries tend to be better quality and easier on your skin. Here are a few of my favorite toxin-free toiletries for you to try: 6. Use glass containers to store food Whether you’re on a quest to prevent food waste or you simply want to store prepared food, reusable containers can do the job. But some food containers are safer than others when it comes to personal and environmental health. Glass is overall a safer choice for food storage than plastic for the same reason as using organic toiletries–it cuts down on endocrine-disrupting chemicals in your life. Are you going to drop fat like you’re a contestant on the Biggest Loser? No. But it’s another small step in the right direction on optimizing your health. And you won’t get that funky plastic smell in your food. *Here’s my pick: 7. Use an air purifier or air purifying plants Every day our bodies are exposed to small amounts of toxins, carcinogens, and organic pollutants, and over the course of our lives, this can have a very harmful effect. Air quality easily ranks as among the most influential factors on our health. Having an air purifier with a HEPA filter can easily help to the reduction of these effects. If you’re like me and are interest in getting an air purifying plants check out this of air purifying plants.   10 Sleep Optimization Hacks 1. Sleep ritual Bedtime rituals can make or break your success. The last few things you do before bed tend to have a significant impact on your mood and energy level the next day, as they often determine how well and how much you sleep. Having a sleep ritual is a great way to set up your environment for optimal sleep. Try these three steps before going to bed. i. Turn down the lights an hour before bedtime. By dimming your lights (or turning most of your lights off) you cut down on the ubiquitous melatonin disrupting blue light that keeps us from sinking into deep sleep. ii. Turn down the temperature an hour before bedtime. (I’m currently doing 69 degrees) Sleep is though to be triggered by a lowering of temperature. In fact, there was a study done with insomniacs who used a cooling cap before bed and it basically got rid of their insomnia. No need to put on a funny cap. Just turn down your thermostat and hour before bed to ensure that overheating won’t keep you from falling asleep. iii. Stay away from the computer and other devices an hour before bedtime. This has to do with the melatonin disrupting blue light coming from your computer and devices. Of course, sometimes we’re required to work late on our computers. If that’s the case, make sure you download for your computer. Or consider buying some . 2. Sleep mask One of the simplest and most effective ways of achieving darkness when you want to sleep is with a sleep mask. But not all sleep masks are created equally. *My pick: 3. Ear plugs When you block out both noise and light, your chances of falling asleep are improved. In case you live in a noisy area or you have trouble sleeping when it is noisy. Use superior foam ear plugs it’s a great way to solve that issue without putting stress on your ears (some ear plugs can cause your ears to ache when worn for hours). *My pick: 4. Breathe Right Extra strong nasal strips Nighttime nasal congestion is commonly caused by a cold, allergies, or a deviated septum. You may have tried common cold treatments or allergy products to relieve your nighttime nasal congestion, but those may not provide the relief you are looking for, and many people prefer a drug-free option. This is what is working for my nighttime breathing trouble. *My pick: 5. Bed You spend at least 1/3 of your “day” at bed, sleeping. This 1/3 is usually taken for granted because you’re most active during the other 16 hours and that’s what you think about and care for. But rarely do you ponder about the bed you sleep on. So, this hack is a little more of the pricier side but you really can’t put a price tag on a good night’s sleep. If your mattress if old and you wake up with stiffness, numbness, or aches and pains consider changing your bed. *UPDATE: After sleeping on the Sealy Optimum for a number of nights, I have to recommend the Tempurpedic TEMPUR Breeze line. The Sealy has lost its firmness in just a few weeks of sleeping on it. If soft beds are your thing then go for it. But if you have back issues, too soft a bed can make them worse. *My pick: Although I don’t have this mattress, I’ve slept on tempurpedic beds and they’re amazing. So adding cooling gel is just an improvement over an already stellar product. 6. Blackout blinds Research has shown that cutting out all light sources while we sleep can halt interruptions to our body clocks. Simply put, learning to love the dark prevents changes to our internal rhythm. It turns out we need exposure to ‘good’ darkness at night for quality sleep. So, blackout blinds are a perfect solution to better sleep. Another consideration is that installing new blinds can be expensive. And not worth doing if you’re just renting. That’s why I recommend these. *My pick: 7. Sleep meditation As you probably already know though, thinking leads to worrying and can be a significant cause of sleeplessness. So practicing relaxation techniques to calm your overactive mind and unwind from a busy day can be an effective way to overcome insomnia. I’ve started meditating every day now and it has a powerful impact on stress and boosting mood. *My pick: 8. Yoga poses & deep breathing If meditation is not your thing and maybe your body is a bit achy, try doing some yoga moves and deep breathing. This can help bring the stress levels down so that you get back in bed and sleep effortlessly. This is a tried-and-true strategy that I’ve used for years when I have trouble sleeping. 9. Magnesium before bed If you want to get into deep sleep faster, I suggest trying Magnesium before bed to see if it works out for you. I’ve experimented with various forms and dosages and I recommend threonate, glycinate, taurate, chloride. Stay away from the cheap form like magnesium oxide. In fact, I personally use Ancient Minerals Magnesium Lotion and recommend it to all my clients who have trouble sleeping. I also give you an oral alternative ( Natural Stacks Magtech) that I like a lot as well. I highly recommend you try the lotion first. *My picks:   10. Melatonin before bed during nights of troubled sleep or jet lag Melatonin is a very popular sleep aid. It’s naturally produced in your body. You don’t need a prescription for it and can buy it in gummy form or in a fruit drink. When used correctly Melatonin is a safe supplement to take when you are having trouble sleeping. If you are planning to take Melatonin check out my top pick here: *My pick: Most melatonin supplements come in doses that are too high. MIT discovered the best dosage to be .3 mg (or 300 mcg). Make sure you break the tablet in half or even less. And read the articles about the proper way to use melatonin. Learn more about Melatonin:   Get your complete Sleep Guide   6 Supplement Hacks 1. Collagen protein for arthritis The claim that collagen can stimulate the growth of new cartilage in joints is worn out by recent medical studies which say that patients with arthritic or damaged joints showed improvement in mobility and pain relief when taking the supplement. If you have any inflammation going on in your joints, try taking collagen protein and see if it makes a difference for you. *My pick:  2-Whey protein for building muscle Whey is a powerful muscle builder. It digests quickly and has the most leucine (the most important branched chain amino acid for muscle growth) of any food. Please, check out my about the 6 best supplements for building muscle, sleep, stress reduction and better health. I go into detail about whey as well as many other supplements. *My pick: Although it’s a combination of whey and collagen, I was impressed with the quality. And my knees started feeling better! I even did a video review of this product. Watch the review . 3-Creatine Monohydrate for strength training and mental performance Creatine monohydrate is the most researched performance supplement on the market. It also can help with mental performance and depression. Read about creatine. *My pick: Biocreatine 4–Beta-alanine for lactic acid/glycolytic training I wrote about beta-alanine and the reasons for using it  *My pick:  I know, I know. It’s got more than just Beta-alanine in it. The reason I think this formula is superior is because 1) I tried it and liked it and 2) high levels of beta-alanine give you the tingles. This combo will help you push hard during your workouts without the tingling feeling that high-doses of beta-alanine cause. 5-Magnesium during times of stress These are the same products mentioned in the sleep section. The only point here is that you can use them during times of high stress. No need to wait until bedtime. *My picks: 6-Theanine during times of stress L-theanine can also be taken to balance out the effects of too much coffee, high stress or before bed. I put it in this section because I’m a bigger fan of L-theanine during the day. L-theanine is also found in green tea. Be sure to get matcha green tea if you decide to go the natural route. *My pick:    10 Mental Fitness and Stress Reduction Hacks 1- Meditation It’s something I find to be super powerful. We go to the gym to work our muscles but we also need to work out our minds and our brains. I want you to try the Headspace App. I have used it and I really enjoy it and I feel the difference. If you’re thinking meditation is not your “thing”, the Headspace App and do the 10 days of 10 minutes and make a call based on that. I know I already mentioned meditation in the sleep section. But it’s a biohack that has proven benefits, reduces stress and is cheap to implement. I think supplements are great but things like meditation are greatly underappreciated. 2- Power naps (20-90 minutes) They are free and great to take. I recommend taking from 20 to 90 minutes but be careful with the longer naps. You can wake up in the middle of a sleep cycle and feel awful from a nap but if you keep it to around 20 minutes you can wake up feeling calm and recharged. If you feel burnt out, take a quick nap! 3- Travel How often are you traveling? Traveling is an amazingly underrated investment in yourself it opens you to new insights which often gives people a new purpose for their lives. If you are unable to travel outside of the country go on a staycation.  It’s amazing how a short trip can re-energize and reinvigorate you. 4- Spending time with family and friends We all get caught up in our daily routine that we don’t get a chance to see our extended family and friends as often as we would like. Make it a point to go spend time with them as this will give you a boost of positivity and happiness through the release of the neurotransmitter oxytocin. 5- Spend time in nature This is another thing many of us don’t get to do very often, especially if you live in the city.  Nature offers one of the most reliable boosts to your mental and physical well-being. Make sure you spend some time in nature. 6- Get sun Sun directly to your skin creates vitamin D and if you get it into your eyes it boosts serotonin production. So those are two critical things for optimal health. In fact, if you’ve been lacking in motivation lately and you’ve noticed that you haven’t been outside as much or it has been a little bit gloomy outside that can be as a result of your serotonin levels. So, get out and get some sun and did I mention — it’s FREE. 7- Improv acting classes This was an amazing experience for me and new information is coming out on how improv acting can reduce anxiety and boost your communication skills. In fact, there are some . It can help also you be more empathetic to understand people by becoming a better listener. If you haven’t done an improv acting class you’re not serious about living your best life. If you’re in the South Florida area you can check out . If not, just do a search for improv acting classes in your area. 8- Toastmasters Similar to improv acting but less expensive, it’s a great way to boost your confidence and communication skills. And you’ll meet other like-minded people looking to get ahead in life. Find a . 9- Conferences Attending conferences is a great way to be re-energized and inspired while connecting with like-minded people. If you’re one those people who suffer from anxiety this is exactly what you need to do as a cognitive challenge for yourself to help you overcome. Learn more 10-Sex I don’t talk about it a lot on this podcast but sex does more than makes us feel connected to our partner. It releases oxytocin that reduces stress and will also boost your testosterone levels. This is good for both men and women, by the way. I would put sex as a pillar of health. If we’re not getting enough or you’re not enjoying sex with your partner(s) that’s something you should look into changing. Audio Question from Debbie @ 00:29:33 Wants to know what the least amount of time is that she needs to workout to maintain a good level of fitness and health. She doesn't race or compete and also doesn't have a lot of extra time in her day. She is currently following Ben's "" workout program. Craig asks @ 00:40:45 I have both an and an iThlete. How do you use your EmWave to help you determine whether or not you are overtraining? I use the iThlete for this purpose but it sounds like you prefer the EmWave 2. Also, I travel nearly every week and find it stressful. A friend asked me "why is it stressful?" I wasn't sure how to respond. In your opinion, why is travel stressful and what can you do to mitigate this? ~ Craig is referring to this . Kathy wrote @ 00:52:46 Ben, I heard you mention that you've been swimming with a snorkel after a podcast guest said he uses one for training.  I was in a bike accident not too long ago and fractured a couple of vertebrae.  I get a little achy from the twisting motion of breathing while swimming, so lately, I've been doing most of my swimming with a snorkel. I have noticed I have more feel for body position. But I've also found that I'm slower by 5 sec/100m, which I find surprising.  Perhaps I'm not rotating enough, since I'm not breathing to the side?  Any thoughts on that or additional advice on training with a snorkel? ~ In my response to Kathy, I mention this . Tricia asks @ 00:57:28 I have neuromas in both of my feet that only bother me when I run. I have been seeing a podiatrist for about 4 months and have been getting a series of "alcohol" based shots. I also have custom orthotics for my running shoes. I have had some improvement from the shots but still have some discomfort. Surgery is my next option and I wanted to know your thoughts on neuroma surgery and recovery and if I could do both feet at once? ~ In my response to Tricia, I mention . Jim wrote @ 01:02:16 Hey, could you talk about in an upcoming podcast about what the prescriptions Prilosec (omeprazole) for acid reflux and Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine dimesylate) for ADHD do to athletes? I am mainly a road bicycle racer, but do a duathlon and triathlon every so often. ~ In my response to Jim, I reference this . I also recommend reviewing this free book on the . Audio statement from Craig @ 00:12:48 After a lot of self-experimenting, he has sorted out his morning nutrition: he eats a banana and 5 MAP, does his workout, then fries some pemmican and eggs in coconut oil. He's middle aged, 145lbs, 5'11" and that works for him. ~ In my response to Craig's breakfast comment, I mention: Pemmican, Nutiva Coconut Oil, Master Amino Pattern, Low Carb Fueling Package. Audio Question from 30secs @ 00:15:56 On last week's show Ben talked about 30 second bursts of exercise, with a 4 minute rest, done 5 times. What type of exercises would you recommend? Something that doesn't require equipment and can be done almost anywhere. Would Burpees work? ~ In my response, I mention the SetStarter and discount code "10percent". Audio Question from Dan @ 00:19:53 He is looking to get a GPS watch. What do you think is the best or best value watch (with HRM)? Does he need an altimeter? ~ In my response, I mention www.dcrainmaker.com. I also mention this video on interval training with the Timex Run Trainer:   And this video on pace setting with the Timex Run Trainer:   And the best deal on heart rate monitors, from Heart Rate Monitors USA. My final recommendation to Dan is the Timex Ironman run trainer paired with TrainingPeaks. Audio Question from Donna @ 00:24:47 She's heard lots of talk about the Green Coffee Bean being some sort of fat burner. Wants to know what your take is on that? She drinks regular coffee (espresso) but has never tried the green coffee. ~ In my response to Donna, I mention the new MPX100. Audio Question from Jane @ 00:30:05 She is 45-years-old and has been following the Paleo eating plan for a couple months now. She would like to do a half marathon next year but has no idea how to go about that or how to change her eating to optimize for energy and endurance. ~ In my response to Jane, I mention www.lowcarbtriathlete.com Audio Question from Keerthi @ 00:34:39 He's looking for ways he can add lean body mass without adding body fat percentage.  He needs recommendations on micro-nutrient ratio, timing, how many extra calories to eat in order to put on at least 10 lbs of lean body mass. ~ In my response to Keerthi, I mention this Get Fit Guy article. Audio Question from Rob @ 00:42:19 He plans on training for his first Ironman. He's never done any endurance sport (longest run is 6 miles, swim 3 laps of an olympic pool, bike is 10 miles). He is pretty fit and in shape. Is 200lbs, 13% body fat. Plays basketball and does HIIT. He is a vegetarian. He is thinking of using the "Tri-Dominator" plan for his Ironman training. Do you think that is a good place to start for his first Ironman. He doesn't just want to race he wants to compete! Also, do you have any suggestions on where to get some affordable training gear? ~ In my response to Rob, I mention www.TriathlonDominator.com, the Bronze modules at www.rockstartriathlete.com and www.thetrishop.com (use 10% discount code BEN10). Audio Question from Tony @ 00:48:26 He is a "lacto-ovo pescatarian" and has IBS. He is trying to go low carb but his dinners (which are out of his control - made by his wife) tend to be higher carb. Is he doing more damage than good having 2 of 3 meals low carb? Especially if he is doing higher fat in the first 2 meals. Due to his IBS he can't do coconut milk or eggs. He follows the "Low Carb for Triathlete" book. He tends to eat a lot of yogurt and almond butter for breakfast but that is getting old. ~ In my response I mention: the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, 2-4 scoops CapraColostrum per day, 4-6 drops oil of oregano per day, 1-3x/day, Hydrochloric acid – start at 1 and work up to 5-7x650mg/day (I recommend NOW Foods Betaine HCL). If H. Pylori, include 2-3 capsules mastic gum per day (I recommend Jarrow Formulas Mastic Gum). 1-2 servings of Bitters per day (I recommend Floradix Herbal Bitters). If urinary tract infection, try D-Mannose – 2-3g/day (I recommend NOW Foods D-Mannose). If you need to eat a meal that is “toxic”, like farm-raised meat, fish, etc. eat activated charcoal immediately prior. Also www.thedietdominator.com and my pesca-ovo vegetarian plan on TrainingPeaks.
