I denne episode aktualitetsanmelder vi også: The Zone of Interest (2023).

He also goes into detail about his collaboration with Lazlo Nemes (SON OF SAUL, SUNSET) (Episode 113 of Team Deakins) and how they began thinking they would shoot SON OF SAUL on Steadicam but how and why changed their minds. He also shares how they chose lenses with the guiding core idea of using the limitation of visual information by focus. Hört also unbedingt mal rein! © Sony Pictures Germany

Screening at Watershed this month is unforgettable Holocaust drama Son of Saul. Watershed's Cinema Curator Mark Cosgrove discusses the film and the morality of the creative choices inherent in making films that portray human atrocities.

In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil

Laszlo Nemes employs a provocative shooting scheme for his debut film, 'Son of Saul'. This award-winning Holocaust drama is centered entirely around the main character; we see his head as he moves around Auschwitz as part of the Sonderkommando, and we occasionally see what he sees.  Saul believes he has found his son among the pile of bodies he is expected to burn, and he sets about have last rites performed on the boy, and thereby save his soul.  While Phil agreed the film was deliberate in it's shooting style, he still found himself intermittently bored. Andrew also had some problems with the unconventional way Nemes directed the movie.  Hear our two critics talk smack about this universally praised film. The film showcases a special type of prisoner in the death camps known as the 'sonderkommandos', who would, under penalty of death, assist with the rounding up of other prisoners to put into the gas chambers, sift through their clothing for valuables, and also dispose of their bodies, which are subsequently burned into ashes.  We follow one sondercommando called Saul, a Hungarian of Jewish descent, who is tasked with the nightmarish responsibility that will likely only grant him a few extra months of life, as they learned too many secrets to keep alive for long.  During one of the gas chamber sessions, he discovers a young boy who manages to survive the extermination, only to have the Germans make sure it isn't for long.  The Germans want to study the body further, but Saul decides he won't let this happen, eventually coming to the determination that the child should have a proper burial with a Rabbi to deliver some final words.  Saul risks his life, as well as of many others, to try to find such a man in the midst of all of the chaos, eventually getting caught up in a potential uprising that might mean an end to the nightmare for many in the camp.

This week Charlie Nash makes his second Spoilerpiece appearance to share his experiences at the Coolidge Corner Halloween Horror Movie Marathon and the New York Film Festival with Evan and Kris. At the 12-hour movie marathon, which he dubs “a cinephile’s wet dream,” Charlie saw horror films that stimulated his overactive imagination like HALLOWEEN, NIGHT OF THE DEMONS, THE CHANGLING, and THE HITCHER. Also, at the New York Film Festival he watched CAROL and SON OF SAUL, two important movies that he breaks down. Charlie and Kris then take on SPECTRE, the James Bond picture that Kris dubs "more of a postscript than an epilogue" to Daniel Craig's entries in the franchise. It’s overly long, self-congratulatory, and worst of all—it has a shitty theme song. Thankfully all three of the guys saw SPOTLIGHT, a tremendous film that chronicles the Boston Globe’s report that exposed sexual scandal in the Catholic Church. Not only is it a better Boston movie than BLACK MASS, but SPOTLIGHT is elegant, subtle, and gripping based on its story and the performances by its leads.
