Zak Penn Explains Why Jay Knows Nothing About Show Business

Screenwriting legend Zak Penn talks about how he got so savvy in the business of show.  We talk about how coming to LA and scouting out the city geared him up for his big move after college and his sale of “The Last Action Hero” started him on a 35 year journey of being one of Hollywood's most sought after writers. We talk about the good times with Speilberg, JJ Abrams, Shawn Levy, Ryan Reynolds, & Dwayne Johnson and we talk about the bad times with others. Bio: Zak Penn's career began as a screenwriter when he sold his first script, LAST ACTION HERO, at the age of twenty-three. Since then, Penn has become known for his work on numerous films based on Marvel comics, including X-MEN 2 and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, ELEKTRA, THE INCREDIBLE HULK and THE AVENGERS. He has also dabbled in other genres, writing scripts for disparate films such as P.C.U., BEHIND ENEMY LINES and SUSPECT ZERO.Penn's shift into independent cinema began when he collaborated with his idol, Werner Herzog, on the script for RESCUE DAWN. Penn directed and co-starred with Herzog in INCIDENT AT LOCH NESS, his award-winning “hoax” documentary about the legendary director's attempts to make a film about the equally legendary monster. THE GRAND, Penn's second completely improvised film, was his third film with Herzog, and featured an eclectic cast including Woody Harrelson, David Cross, Ray Romano, Cheryl Hines, Dennis Farina and Gabe Kaplan. In addition, Penn co-wrote the original story for ANTZ and produced the animated film OSMOSIS JONES. He has also acted in a number of independent films, including STAR MAPS and CHUCK & BUCK. His first foray into television was the critically acclaimed original series ALPHAS starring David Strathairn. Penn directed the documentary ATARI: GAME OVER for Xbox Entertainment Studios.More recently, Penn adapted the New York Times bestselling novel READY PLAYER ONE for Warner Bros. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film was released in 2018. Penn also co-wrote the script for the action comedy FREE GUY, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer. The film is directed by Shawn Levy and was released in August of 2021.

Werner Herzog is one of the most idiosyncratic, original and prolific filmmakers of modern times, having made nearly 80 films over six decades. His features include Fitzcarraldo, Aguirre Wrath of God and Rescue Dawn, and his documentaries include the multi award-winning Grizzly Man, Cave Of Forgotten Dreams and Into the Abyss. Werner Herzog productions are the stuff of cinema legend, with stories of audacious shoots in inaccessible locations. He's also written several books, including a newly published memoir called Every Man For Himself And God Against All. Speaking to John Wilson from Los Angeles where he lives, Werner Herzog recalls his impoverished childhood in a remote Bavarian valley at the end of the Second World War. He says that, as a teenager, his discovery of a book about the Lascaux cave paintings was ‘like a bolt of lightning' to his creative imagination, and led to him making a documentary film about prehistoric cave art many years later. He describes how his films often start with a vivid or unusual image, and how he seeks to capture a sense of awe at the power of the natural world. Werner Herzog discusses the extremely arduous and dangerous conditions in which he made some of his best known films, including Fitzcarraldo and four other films starring the temperamentally volatile lead actor Klaus Kinski. Known for his deadpan, Bavarian-accented narration of his own documentary films, Herzog also reflects on how his distinctive voice has led to him being cast in menacing roles in Hollywood films, including Jack Reacher alongside Tom Cruise, and even a cameo in The Simpsons. Producer: Edwina Pitman

Randall asserts that (US-made) Vietnam War movies nearly universally serve to exonerate US conduct in the war — a war whose purpose is only to oppress indigenous people, further colonialism, and expand empire.  *** Vietnam movies discussed include:  The Green Berets (1968) Coming Home (1978) The Deer Hunter (1978) Go Tell the Spartans (1978) Apocalypse Now (1979) First Blood (1982) Platoon (1986) Good Morning; Vietnam (1987) Hamburger Hill (1987) Gardens of Stone (1987) Full Metal Jacket (1987) Hanoi Hilton (1987) Born on the Fourth of july (1989) Casualties of War (1989) We Were Soldiers (2002) Rescue Dawn (2006) *** Topics discussed include: US empire building The Phoenix Program What would a good Vietnam movie be like?  The CIA as an outgrowth of Nazi intelligence Reinhard Gehlen Operation Paperclip Mỹ Lai massacre Wannsee Conference Côn Đảo Prison Zero Dark Thirty (2012) American Sniper (2014) The Card Counter (2021) Top Gun: Maverick (2022) Bertolt Brecht's distancing effect wars run by the CIA Missing (1982) Paths of Glory (1957) *** https://www.militarytimes.com/off-duty/movies-video-games/2018/03/29/military-times-10-best-vietnam-war-movies/ *** Quotes from this show: I would call it a moral get out of jail free card because if every soldier in every war is really just an innocent chap who accidentally signed up for the wrong thing and now got stuck with a bunch of bullies who don't know any better, it really reduces the entire nation's moral culpability in a war because now it's just a bunch of good guys and bullies. —Chris These movies are trying to excuse the US' behavior in Vietnam. —Randall We gotta do bad things because the people we're fighting do bad things. You can literally justify anything with that moral equivalency. There's no point in having law, order, civility, or even a Geneva Convention if you're just going to tell hero stories. —Chris Our hero has the right to morally transgress because the villain is always so bad that the rules of civility exempts our hero from having any rules of civility. —Chris The CIA is the missing character in a lot of these movies. —Chris Every other kind of genre there's a moment of catharsis and realization that you can be a better person, but you can't do that with a country. You can't tell a story about a nation becoming a better person. Every time you make a war movie you're always going to end up with this false pat on the back. —Chris Is there anything the US could do that the US people would be ashamed of? —Randall Almost every one of our war movies are in some sense a perverse rationalization for violence. —Chris Why are they made at all? They're glorifications of going to war. —Randall *** Background reading: How to Hide an Empire: A History of the Greater United States by Daniel Immerwahr The Phoenix Program: America's Use of Terror in Vietnam by Douglas Valentine The CIA as Organized Crime: How Illegal Operations Corrupt America and the World by Douglas Valentine  Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic by Chalmers Johnson A True History of the United States: Indigenous Genocide, Racialized Slavery, Hyper-Capitalism, Militarist Imperialism and Other Overlooked Aspects of American Exceptionalism by Daniel Sjursen *** recorded June 12, 2022 *** Visit us at https://chrisandrandall.com/

What does this pair of films, one a documentary about POW Dieter Dengler, the other a drama based upon his story, tell us about the moral obligations film makers have toward the subjects of their films? How does the treatment of Eugene DeBruin in Rescue Dawn illustrate director Werner Herzog's failure in regard to these obligations? How did Dieter Dengler's early life in Post War Germany prepare him for enduring the horrors of captivity, and the rigors of the escape undertaken by his group? How does the movie illustrate the common tendency in Hollywood to underplay the challenges veterans face as they return from war? Does this indicate a cultural discomfort with these issues? What commentary does this provide on the broader American society's stewardship responsibilities toward those who serve, and experience the rigors of war?

Actor Steve Zahn Shares His Love of History and Kentucky Steven James Zahn is an American actor and comedian. He was born November 13, 1967 in Marshall, Minnesota, USA. He stars as Davis McAlary in the first, second, third and fourth seasons. He has also appeared in the films Out of Sight (1998), You've Got Mail (1998), Road Kill (2001), Sahara (2005), A Perfect Getaway (2009) and Dallas Buyers Club (2013). Zahn's early roles were split between movies, touring companies of Broadway shows, and TV shows. In 1992-1993, he toured as Hugo with the Barry Weissler production of Bye Bye Birdie with Tommy Tune, Ann Reinking, and Marc Kudisch. He played Phoebe Buffay's husband Duncan in a 1995 episode of Friends. Zahn appeared in several films in the mid-1990s, including Tom Hanks' That Thing You Do! These films garnered him enough respect that he was offered the starring role in the critically acclaimed indie film Happy, Texas (1999). Some of Zahn's most popular movies have been his later ones, including National Security (2003), Daddy Day Care (2003), and Sahara (2005). In Sahara Zahn starred alongside Matthew McConaughey. Zahn received his strongest critical acclaim for his performance in Riding in Cars with Boys, in which he co-starred with Drew Barrymore as her dim-witted, drug addicted husband. Roger Ebert, Richard Roeper and the BBC stated that the performance was deserving of an Oscar nomination. He also voiced Runt of the Litter in Chicken Little . He also gave dramatic performances in Rescue Dawn and the television mini-series Comanche Moon. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/uncommonhistoryofthesouth/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/uncommonhistoryofthesouth/support

Award-winning screenwriter, Zak Penn joins us to discuss finding early success at age 23, developing his craft, and working with with Stephen Spielberg on READY PLAYER ONE. Guest Biography Zak Penn’s career began as a screenwriter when he sold his first script, LAST ACTION HERO, at the age of twenty-three. Since then, Penn has become known for his work on numerous films based on Marvel comics, including X-MEN 2 and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, ELEKTRA, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, and most recently, THE AVENGERS. He has also dabbled in other genres, writing scripts for disparate films such as P.C.U., BEHIND ENEMY LINES and SUSPECT ZERO. Penn’s shift into independent cinema began when he collaborated with his idol, Werner Herzog, on the script for RESCUE DAWN. Penn directed and co-starred with Herzog in INCIDENT AT LOCH NESS, his award-winning “hoax” documentary about the legendary director’s attempts to make a film about the equally legendary monster. THE GRAND, Penn’s second completely improvised film, was his third film with Herzog, and featured an eclectic cast including Woody Harrelson, David Cross, Ray Romano, Cheryl Hines, Dennis Farina and Gabe Kaplan. Penn directed the documentary ATARI: GAME OVER for Xbox Entertainment Studios. Penn most recently adapted the New York Times bestselling novel READY PLAYER ONE for Warner Bros. Directed by Stephen Spielberg, the film will be released in March 2018. Penn is currently working on a script for Warner Bros set in THE MATRIX universe. Bloodsucking Bastards, A Clockwork Orange, getting cadavered, getting pelvised, a movie freak with my three brothers, a Faustian bargain, in the middle of the corn fields, dancing around to records, the hallway of doom, chopping Chris Evan's head off, stomping, wine, building a career, spilling coffee on yourself, making lateral moves, Rock Hudson, leading roles in smaller films,  a flaming ashtray, Sum 41, Captain America, Steppenwolf Theatre, playing the wolfman, I Walk the Line, Julianne Moore, reborns, melted through the toilet, that's the tragedy I think of most people... is they never really get to know each other... and as a result, they are never really in great contact or relationships with other people, being able to sit down and have a conversation with Jason Robards for just a few minutes, Tom Green waving at you, Marian Seldes, Twilight Zone, the John Hughes machine, Shaun of the Dead, winning two Academy Awards, being kept in a glass case, walking around with an oxygen tank, a weird dude snapping in my bathroom, Paul Thomas Anderson, real freedom, Craig Zobel, getting a call from a dead friend, not eating gluten, feels like a nightmare, being special, It feels that it's worked out the way it's supposed to, Simon Pegg, a throbbing hip, just pulling faces, saying words wrong, run through the gamut of what my life experience has been, John Randolph, The Gypsy Moths, there's only so much time... and you could really waste it, the truth about who you are, Mark Duplass, eating applesauce, Paul Newman, learning how to reel yourself back in, my cat kept getting in the way and making dinosaur noises.  Spoiler Alert: We go in detail on John Frankenheimer's "Seconds". So go watch it beforehand. "It's one of the great gifts, that I get to do as an actor, is I get to go and peer into the abyss."

On this episode we are inspired by the new release UNBROKEN to look at military movies that are survival stories, and how war, specifically how war is portrayed on film, has changed with the times. From the somewhat cordial but surprisingly dark gut punch of 1963’s THE GREAT ESCAPE to the very dark but surprisingly optimistic lead played by Christian Bale in 2006’s RESCUE DAWN. All of that, plus our guest Emily Mackay of Movies and Mayhem, bragging about her upcoming Sundance experience.

The Brothers Wilson return to take on an actor of extreme talent, as well as extreme temperament: the Overlord of Growling himself, Christian Bale! The forums have given Ian and Pandy his star-making movie American Psycho, whilst wartime history flicks Rescue Dawn and Swing Kids are shared between the siblings. Pandy has all-new jingles ready to unleash, whilst one film provokes actual loathing in one of the hosts. Who admits to "doing a Bateman" in the bedroom? Why is Father Wilson like Hitler? What is up with Bale and his failure to master German accents? There's singing, there's discussions of dancing, and a few obligatory mentions of House MD. Plus, three Reese Witherspoon films are chosen for episode five, and the subject of episode six is revealed.
