Fat Loss Simplified: tips for weight loss, workouts, nutrition, fitness, and a balanced life
Ever notice how eating real, whole foods gets labeled as "dieting"? In today's episode, we tackle a frustrating reality: our society has become so accustomed to ultra-processed food that simply eating basic, nutrient-dense meals can be seen as an attempt to lose weight. This idea hit home when my wife told me about a conversation at work—where bringing a lunch of whole, single-ingredient foods somehow turned into a discussion about weight loss. Why This Perception is a Problem Eating real food isn't about restriction—it's about fueling your body well. Our culture has normalized ultra-processed, addictive foods to the point that anything else feels "extreme." Not making this mindset shift is actively holding people back from feeling their best. The Power of Whole Foods Why my household is an "ingredient household." The key difference between eating well for life vs. short-term dieting. How whole foods keep you full, energized, and thriving. The Ultra-Processed Food Trap How food companies design products to override your natural hunger signals. The science behind why processed foods are so hard to stop eating. Why willpower alone isn't the solution when you're up against engineered cravings. How to Shift Your Mindset & Make the Switch Stop thinking of real food as "diet food"—it's just food. The massive impact of redefining “normal” eating habits. Simple ways to prioritize whole foods without feeling like you're missing out. If you've ever felt judged for eating real food or struggled to break free from processed food cravings, this episode is packed with insights to help you make that needed mental switch. These chemicals are invented for one sole purpose, and that's to improve the bottom line of the food industry, not improve our health.”In this episode, I sit down with author and activist Vani Hari, popularly known as the “food babe.” For over a decade, she has been exposing toxic ingredients in America's food—and getting companies to stop using them.“[The FDA has] not reviewed the safety data of these artificial dyes in over 10 years. However, children's consumption of these artificial food dyes have increased 500 percent,” says Hari. “We're not trying to stop fast food or get rid of fast food. We want to make it the same as they do in Europe. McDonald's french fries: 11 ingredients here in the United States, including dimethyl polysiloxane, an ingredient you would find in silly putty ... but in the UK, there's three ingredients, and the fourth ingredient is optional. It's just salt.”Hari argues that food companies should add a warning label to every product that uses artificial food dyes, as they already do in Europe.“That would automatically almost force the food industry to remove them here as well, because they do not want parents to be concerned about their products,” she says.Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.

Mary Sorma, Head Trainer at Tremont Athletic Club in Cleveland, stopped by to bust some dieting myths and help us understand what we should really be eating. After this conversation, you'll understand how much we like to complicate things for ourselves. The pressure to diet and look Instagram filter-perfect has consumed our society. Dieting trends have become so powerful that they've made their way to stores and product labels- "low carb," "Keto friendly," "Paleo friendly," "Healthy Fats," "Low Calorie." One diet tells you to eliminate carbs, another tells you to do without fats, but our bodies need those things, you stand in the grocery store feeling completely and totally defeated so you just go home and order a pizza (I can't be the only one that does this). Mary not only gives us all the tips and great advice when it comes to healthy fitness and nutrition habits, but she emphasizes what we all want to hear- that we don't need to stop going to taco Tuesday because we're trying to eat healthier. It's all about building healthier habits that help us strike that balance so we don't feel the guilt and shame around eating a taco and having a margarita or two. Listen to the full episode to get all the details on how you can begin to build your own healthy habits that will help you strike a better balance.

I kind of hate to even bring this up… But only Kind Of!It is a story that needs to be told, despite the implications: most of the supplements endlessly recommended and actually shilled by those in the ancestral lifestyle are unnecessary. There, I said it. When good health becomes dependent on people being hooked on artificial supplements, why then it becomes just another marketing gimmick! Just as conventional, AMA big pharma recommended modern medicine, which is largely based on ‘science’ that is 50 years out of date (low fat- high carb nonsense)-Paleo, and increasingly the primary buzzword of KETO are being dominated by the necessity of marketing. That is: selling endless amounts of expensive supplements! If you are seeking lifelong health and fitness, this is not the goal you should be seeking. We need to get back to basics here, to what drew me (and everyone else) to the pristine essense of the ancestral, Paleo Lifestyle in the beginning:EATING REAL FOOD!That, my friends, is the paleo diet in a nutshell- eat real, God made foods, as they come in nature, and ignore the boxed, prepared junk, and fast foods in general. Simple. Easy Peasey. But now- all you hear about is “take this supplement, and this- I sell them both on my website- be sure to order NOW or you are doomed!” While this may be preferrable to taking all of the big Pharma statins, and blood pressure fake medicines, and undergoing every medical test they come up with to separate you from your money- it still is not ideal, and mainly in existence to, again: separate you from your money. But I know, you are concerned about your nutrition, how the depleted soil is making our vegetables less nutritious, and we ‘need’ supplements to keep us healthy…Make your own supplements! That is the simple solution. Get yourself a Vitamix blender, which is the best. This is a one time expense that will ensure your health for a long, long time! Then, start in by making yourself and your family a smoothie to drink each morning. Make a canister full, and put the portions into canning jars that you can refrigerate. Use real veggies and fruits in your smoothies, along with kefir, spices, cod liver oil, apple cider vinegar, raw pastured eggs, yogurt, and everything else I recommend in my eBook Perfectly Paleo Exercise and at my website at paleojay.comIt’s all there, for free! Along with cinnamon, vitamin D liquid, turmeric powder and ginger root and/or ginger powder- this will be everything that you need for perfect and maximum health! EVERYTHING!!It’s really not that hard. (As Michael Scott would say in ‘the Office’). Just take these real, organic (hopefully you are on board with using foods uncontaminated with herbicide poisons), and blend them up to an assimilable state, and drink them down! Keep the rest of your diet clean, meaning good meats, pastured eggs and dairy, and without grains… It’s really that simple. Eat your meat and veggies, occasionally some fruit or sweetener (I am boiling my maple sap into syrup right now), and confine your carbs to sweet or white potatoes, and those that come along with vegetables. That is IT! Along with ample sleep, good, natural (Perfectly Paleo Exercise), clean non-urban air and ample sunshine and time in Nature: why then you will be As Healthy as You Can Be!! Really-

Hey Weight Loss Nation! The Weight Loss Nation I have a GREAT FEAR of FLYING, Specifically...Being in SMALL PLANES! Fear of FLYING in Aircraft is called - AvioPhobia while the Fear of Flying on “Air” is called AeroPhobia. I have both! If you REALLY want to Lose Weight…..AND Keep it off FOREVER, You MUST Live a Long-Term Healthy Lifestyle. That includes – 1. Eating Real Food 2. Doing Physical Activity You ENJOY Doing 3. Having a POSITIVE Mindset……which Includes….Loving YOURSELF AND Your BODY…….Saying Positive Affirmations……Hanging around POSITIVE people….Getting rid of the Noise & Crap in your Head……AND Conquering Your FEARS! Today.....I am concentrating on "Mindset." I decided to "conquer" my FEAR of Flying and being on a small plane...by SKYDIVING! I researched Sky Diving Companies in Florida, and I found that Jump Florida Skydiving had a "top notch" safety record! Safety is MY #1 Priority. I called Jump Florida Skydiving and scheduled my Jump! When you arrive at Jump Florida Skydiving, you sign in with Gabbi at the Check In Counter. Then you read & sign Waivers……you must testify to your age & your weight. You must be 18 or older and you must be under 230 lbs. to sky dive as TANDEM. TANDEM means you are literally ATTACHED to a Jump Florida Skydiving Instructor, with harnesses. Next, you and your group of sky divers…. will be given about a ten minute instructional session, which goes over the process of the pre-board, on-board and skydiving process, with your TANDEM instructor. Now….it’s time for your Gear! One of the Jump Florida Sky Diving Instructors …..puts your skydiving harness on you. Then you are ASSIGNED your TANDEM Instructor. I was TANDEM with co-owner Tim Jones. When you visit the jumpfloridaskydiving.com website, you’ll see lots of pictures of Tim. He’s got personality! I had 6 words for Tim……”Your Wish Is At My Command.” Tim laughed and he went over final instructions and checked my gear AGAIN, before we headed over to the plane. I boarded the plane with 6 other Sky Diver’s in my group All with our TANDEM Instructors at our backs. During the ride up to the 14,000 altitude in the small plane, I started thinking about positive affirmations. It worked! I began to feel focused and was able to concentrate. Then it was my time to jump! Tim was in full control and I was able to "let go" and allow him to be in charge. It's pretty easy when you're attached to someone and you know they want to live as much as you do! The "Free Fall" is about 1 minute and 45 seconds. That 1 minute and 45 seconds was TERRIFYING! It is when Tim pulled the "rip cord," and the parachute opened, that I suddenly felt....a "natural high." You immediately slow down, there is a "mild" breeze and an obvious "calm" surrounding you. Very peaceful. I felt like I was "Flying." Tim went over my final instructions for landing and I slid in on the grass with a perfect landing! I can tell you that I can now get on a plane without having to take xanax. I can tell you that I can also get on a small plane without having heart palpatiations and anxiety. I can travel this way in the future. I still feel uncomfortable with heights, but I don't have a severe "fear" of it anymore. See what I mean!!!! Skydiving has helped me CONQUER my fear of flying!!! YOU can CONQUER your fears too! Go SKYDIVING! If you are in Florida, contact Jump Florida Skydiving go to the website or call them at 888 - 313 - 5867 to schedule your jump today! Hey Weight Loss Nation! Today, I have another restaurant review from my visit to the Florida Keys. If you LIVE in the Florida Keys or you are on Vacation in the Florida Keys, I have a great restaurant for you to visit. I visited the FL Keys Steak & Lobster House, which is located at 3660 Overseas Hwy, Marathon, FL 33050 Here's the link to their website www.FlKeysSteakAndLobster.com The Florida Keys are a string of tropical islands……and they stretch about 120 miles off the southern tip of Florida, between the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. There are literally over a THOUSAND islands in the Keys. This was my 1st visit to the Keys, so…… I am NOT an authority by any means, on the Florida Keys! What I am good at……is finding you Restaurants with Healthy Options during YOUR trip to the Keys! Thankfully…….The “Keys” are divided up into 3 Major Sections: The “Upper Keys” The “Middle Keys”……. And …….The “Lower Keys” To give you a perspective……..Key Largo is located in the “Upper Keys,” which is the Northern part of The Keys, and is located South of Miami. Key West is located in the “Lower Keys”…….the Southern most part of the Keys. Today, I am going to tell you about a fantastic restaurant on the island of “Marathon,” which is located in the “middle keys.” I mentioned to you last week…..that I was visiting My Friends……. Christy Haussler & Allison Millwood, owners of “Team Podcast.” Team Podcast offers “Full Service podcast production, which includes…..podcast editing , show notes, and social media marketing distribution. If you need help with podcast production…..don’t hesitate to contact Team Podcast at www.teampodcast.com Christy & Allison know I’m LIVING a Healthy Lifestyle, so they took me to….. the “FL Keys Steak & Lobster House,” which is located at 3660 Overseas Hwy, Marathon, FL 33050. Again……Marathon is located in the “Middle Keys” The atmosphere inside the restaurant is cozy & clean, with fresh, white linen tablecloths & scenes of stained glass fish on the walls. I love that the tables are not squished up against each other too! I had plenty of room to eat and I was able to have a conversation with my guests…..without SCREAMING! I HATE sitting at a table in a restaurant & I can’t even have a conversation with my guests without screaming at the top of my lungs! Nice atmosphere at FL Keys Steak & Lobster House! Our WAITER was named Jason, and Jason was an excellent waiter. The kind of waiter, when you tell him ONCE what you are drinking and he comes back with another glass at exactly the right time! Jason was also great at recommending items from the menu based on my “LIVING a Healthy Lifestyle” criteria. Thank you Jason for obviously liking your job and taking care of me and my guests that night! Now…..let’s take a look at the menu MENU They have a full-line list of adult beverages with beer, wine and specialty drinks. I found the Gluten-Free "Redbridge Beer" interesting, and they have non-alcoholic O’Douls Beer as well. They serve unsweetened ice tea as well as bottled & sparkling water. The appetizers are abundant and tempting. You have to ALWAYS remember you are eating healthy, which means eating REAL Food……the Weight Loss Nation motto is…. “If it grows out of the ground, hangs from a tree, roams the Earth, flies in the sky or swims in the ocean…..EAT it™” Don’t think hard about this and definitely don’t try and manipulate what the motto means. The motto does NOT mean eating Fried Food. Shrimp that has a bread batter and then deep fried in vegetable oil….is NOT…..Healthy Eating or Eating Real Food. Healthy Eating an option from the menu like this …….Chunks of fresh lobster marinated with lemon juice, oranges, cilantro, onions and cucumber…..This Healthy Eating option is called Lobster Ceviche. For $15.95, you get FRESH and I mean FRESH.... Lobster with healthy fruits and veggies, that come together beautifully! Also on the Appetizer list…… is my NEW FAVORITE SHRIMP! Which is PINK, Wild Caught Gulf Shrimp Cocktail! For $15.95, you’ll get FOUR HUGE....SWEET.... Pink Gulf Shrimp, with a side of cocktail sauce. The Shrimp is soo sweet…..all you really need is a squeeze of lemon on each shrimp….Delicious! There is an absolute Delicious list of healthy salads you could choose from. I would suggest since you’re in the Florida Keys, where fresh fish and shellfish are brought to the FL Keys Steak & Lobster House Daily, that you try not to EAT a SALAD….although delicious….for your main meal! Listen to some of these AWESOME Entrees! First …… All of the seafood is bought fresh DAILY to the Fl Keys Steak & Lobster House Restaurant and prepared to order. All dinners are served with your choice of two sides. You can get the fresh vegetable of the day and a small house salad as your sides. AND…..Unlimited soup and salad bar can be added to any entrée for just $6.95 The first Delicious Healthy Menu Option is..... The Broiled Seafood Platter on the menu for $32.95 You get…..Fresh Mahi…shrimp….scallops and….. a crab cake broiled to perfection! I was very tempted to get this entrée….and next time I visit….I will get it…..but I saw Coconut-Macadamian Nut Crusted Snapper on the menu and I flipped! The Coconut Macadamian Crusted Snapper is Pan Fried in olive oil, and a Mango Sauce and then topped with Red Peppers in a butter sauce onto your plate! No hesitation for me…..That’s what I ordered! When I go somewhere that has fresh fish and can properly cook and prepare fish…..I order it! The Snapper filet was white, flaky and the blend of coconut macadamian nut with mango sauce was BEAUTIFUL! The Snapper also comes with 2 sides, which I ordered the grilled vegetables and a small house salad. The Snapper Entree costs $32.95, but I’ll tell you what…….It was the BEST DAMN Snapper I have EVER had! There are other fantastic seafood entrees on the menu too! IF you feel like steak, chops or ribs…..they have wonderful entrees on the menu for you too. They pretty much cater to everyone at FL Keys Steak & Lobster Restaurant. They even have a kid’s menu! They also have Free Raised Veal & Poultry entrees and they have Vegetarian entrees too! They have a Spicy Grilled Tofu Salad for $16.95 Which is Served with mixed greens, walnuts & raisins covered with a spicy dressing. The Healthy options on this menu is ABUNDANT Nation! This is Season 2, Episode 22 of the Small Scale Life Podcast, and today we are going to check back in and provide a healthy lifestyle progress report. I will be summarizing my work and progress, celebrating the wins and adjusting the plan to address the failures. I am not striving for perfection. After all, I am trying to move from a zero to a two, and then from a two to a four….all on my way to becoming an eight out of ten! Before we begin.... In case you are new to Small Scale Life, we are dedicated to intentional living through learning, doing and growing. We are focused on: • Gardening, • Healthy living, and • Having adventures along the way. Focus Areas and the Plan In Season 2, Episode 20 of the Small Scale Life Podcast, I discussed my four point plan for getting on track with developing a healthy lifestyle. The four main points of the plan are the following: Eating Real Food for every meal with emphasis on planning and preparation Getting great sleep every night with focusing on budgeting and using time wisely Getting mentally strong by journaling and podcasting Working out regularly I thought I would circle back in this episode and give you an update on how things are going. After all, it is all fine and good to talk about these things, but it helps to document the work and progress, celebrate the wins and adjust to address the failures. Let’s get into each point and go through them one-by-one and as part of this healthy lifestyle progress report. Eating Real Food for Every Meal -> Planning and Preparation • I am going to achieve this is by planning and preparing breakfast and lunch ahead of time. • For dinner, I will need to choose the right foods and eat enough to last until morning. This is one area that I need to continue to focus on moving forward. We did a great job planning dinners, but I need to work on breakfast and lunch. I think I was taking on a lot with my goals, so I am going to dial it back a bit. I am going to focus on lunch and reboot that meal. Breakfast at times gets sketchy (meaning sometimes I don’t eat at breakfast), but I do eat lunch most days. I am really going to focus on eating real food at lunch and cutting out any snacks. I am going to reread the Rebooted Body information on eating Real Food, and I am going to focus on lunches for the next week. Once I have that under control, I will work on other meals. My action item going forward is rereading the Rebooted Body information on eating Real Food, and I focusing on eat real food at lunches for the next week. Getting Great Sleep Every Night -> Budgeting and Using Time Wisely I have been keeping track of my sleep during the Rebooted Body Walk Challenge. Looking at the data, I have been getting a little over 7.5 hours of sleep per night. It helps when you have a device monitoring your sleep and the quality of sleep. I need to continue getting over 7 hours of quality sleep each night, and I need to get to bed earlier so I can get workouts completed before work. That is the sweet spot because: • We are usually too tired after a long day at work to workout • Our lives get busy after work and nights seem to get short • Days are getting shorter and it is getting dark earlier If I can adjust my schedule, I can get the workouts done early and have the evening to complete other tasks or hang out with my family and friends without guilt or regrets. My Sleep Action Item is going to bed earlier, getting up earlier and getting an average of 7 hours of sleep per night. Getting Mentally Strong ->Journaling and Podcasting I like listening to podcasts and audio books. I find it is a great way to get a lot of good information while I travel around for my job or do other projects like walking, canning or gardening. That said, there were a couple of podcasts that I was listening to that weren’t that great for various reasons, and I have gone ahead and dropped them. They were just adding to the noise. Instead, I have been using my Audible subscription to listen to a book by Greg McKeown called “Essentialism.” It is over six hours, and I am trying to really listen closely to this one and take some notes. I would like to complete a review of this one once I am complete. Also part of getting mentally strong was journaling. In the past, I found that it helps to write something daily because it helped me focus and write what I am thinking and feeling. Over the past week, I just didn’t start writing, so I need to get going on that this week My action item for this week is that I will journal 5 times over the next week. Working Out Regularly - >Planning, Developing Stronger Whys and Choosing to do the Work Over the past 11 days, I have been participating in the Rebooted Body 14-Day Walk Challenge. There were three categories for the Walk Challenge: • 1-mile per day • 3-miles per day • 5-miles per day I have been having some knee pain, so I decided to choose the 1-mile per day category. I figured if I could get at least a mile done a day, I would be doing better than I was now. Plus, I figured I could get some momentum as the weather is getting colder (winter is coming) and the snow will keep us indoors for six months. I have tried to walk every day, and I used Map My Walk on my iPhone to track my mileage and my times. If you have been watching the Small Scale Life Instagram account or Small Scale Life Facebook page, you have seen my healthy lifestyle progress report. Stacking it all up, you can see some real progress: • Day 1 – 2.6 miles; 50 minutes, 38 seconds (9/15/17) • Day 2 – 1.3 miles; 20 minutes, 14 seconds (9/16/17) • Day 3 – 1 mile; 19 minutes, 9 seconds (9/17/17) • Day 4 – 2.6 miles; 49 minutes, 5 seconds (9/18/17) • Day 5 – 2.6 miles; 52 minutes, 18 seconds (9/19/17) • Day 6 – 3 miles; 63 minutes, 9 seconds (9/20/17) • Day 7 – Rest (9/21/17) • Day 8 – Rest (9/22/17) • Day 9 - 1 mile; 21 minutes, 22 seconds (9/23/17) • Day 10 – 2.2 miles; 41 minutes, 8 seconds (9/24/17) • Day 11 – 3 miles; 60 minutes (9/25/17) • Day 12 – 1 mile; 21 minutes, 57 seconds (9/26/17) • Day 13 - Presentations on my feet for 3 hours • Day 14 - Rail Safety Station Blitz - on my feet for 4 hours Total mileage to date: 20.3 miles Walking over 20 miles in 12 days is a pretty cool stat! In addition, I was looking at the historical workout information, and I have improved my walk times. On 9/11/17, I logged 2.6 miles in 55 minutes, 17 seconds. So, even though I have been having a lot of knee pain due to arthritis, my time per mile has decreased over the past 12 days. The Walk Challenge has been good for me to get some momentum and get moving again, even with some significant knee pain. The challenge will end on Friday. After the Walk Challenge is complete, I want to get back into the pool and start swimming laps. This will be easier on my joints while I get a great full body workout. I will also try to get some biking in as well. My action item this week is to keep moving by getting on bikes or getting in the pool and swimming laps for at least 5 days next week. Going Forward - Healthy Lifestyle Progress Report In summary, I am going to be completing the following Action Items over the next week and providing another healthy lifestyle progress report: My Eating Action Item going forward is rereading the Rebooted Body information on eating Real Food, and I focusing on eat real food at lunches for the next week. My Sleep Action Item is going to bed earlier, getting up earlier and getting an average of 7 hours of sleep per night. My Mind Action Item for this week is that I will journal 5 times over the next week. My Movement Action Item this week is to keep moving by getting on bikes or getting in the pool and swimming laps for at least 5 days next week. The bottom line is that I have made some progress on the four parts of the plan, but I am not perfect. In fact, PERFECTION is not the goal. PERFECTION is actually the enemy. When we strive to be perfect, we are setting ourselves up for frustration and failure. Kevin Michael Geary talks a lot about perfectionism at Rebooted Body, and this is a topic for a future podcast! I guess we’ll have to wait for that one. How is that for a podcast tease? The bottom line is that I want to thank Kevin Michael Geary and Zack Franke at Rebooted Body for organizing and facilitating the 14-Day Walk Challenge. Even though my knee has been pretty sore, this has been a great way to get momentum towards developing the healthy lifestyle. The key now is to keep that momentum going and actually do the work. As Kevin said so eloquently in a livestream to the Walk Challenge Facebook Group: [tweetthis]“The only thing that will change your life is execution.” – Kevin Michael Geary[/tweetthis] We can learn and read and think all we want, but it really does come down to execution. We need use that knowledge and do the work. We need to get our offense on the field and execute! I hope this podcast and healthy lifestyle progress report will inspire you to eat real food, move every day and get better sleep. I hope you will be inspired to do a little bit each day and go for the long haul. I hope you will join me on our journey for a healthier life. The road ahead is not easy (if it was easy, everyone would do it), but we need to start with a single step. Put enough of those steps together, and we will start to get some momentum. Did I think I would walk over 20 miles in two weeks? No, I did not, especially with a sore knee. Guess what? I did it, and I will keep going. Why not join me? I will do some thinking about where we go from here. Maybe we run a fitness challenge this fall to help keep everyone motivated. Maybe we run micro-challenges. I’ll have to think about it a bit and talk to folks in the Small Scale Life Facebook Group. If you want to provide some input into what comes next, join the conversation there. Remember: you are stronger when you work with a team and a group, so you should join us in the Small Scale Life Facebook Group. This is where we will end the healthy lifestyle progress report this week. Stay tuned to Small Scale Life for more updates on the Fall Garden, for interesting interviews and more information as we head into Fall. In this episode we speak about our recent trip to Fiji (which we won thanks to doTERRA essential oils) and our eating habits along the way. We have a huge focus on de-stressing on holidays and how the food that you eat while away shouldn't be your main focus. We indulged in breakfast buffets (which were included in our hotel package) and quickly noticed that many of the foods were not overly healthy and certainly not additive free. To stick to our normal diets, that we had back home, would only cause us stress which is certainly not what we wanted on holiday! We do however discuss the limits we placed on ourselves and certainly on what our children ate - they didn't have complete free range at the buffet table! If we were to eat the same food that we ate on holiday, back at home, then we truly believe our bloating, general state of mind and brain fog would have increased dramatically. However, being in a relaxed place, complteley on 'Fiji time' meant we could indulge in different foods. Returning home we certainly could appreciate our daily healthy habits and exercise routines. You almost have to have a detective license these days to get “real” food at the grocery store. Labeling is intentionally misleading to consumers who believe “all-natural” actually means the product is truly all natural.
