Today's guest makes me feel free. I can't help that one and you'll see why in a second. My guest is Malcolm Bruce. In addition to being the son of legendary bassist Jack Bruce, he is, himself, quite a gifted and accomplished musician. In this episode we figure out where we're going wrong, discuss growing up as Jack Bruce's kid, and when he began writing, music and other things. This was so much fun because it was the epitome of a casual chat. We talk about the generational Bruce/Baker energy, get a brief history of Cream, and repeatedly bring up spandex for some reason. Malcolm has recently released an album titled Heavenly Cream and it's a very different type of Cream tribute. It's an acoustic album that really makes you focus on the brilliant songwriting more than the extended jamming of the band. And in addition to Malcolm, the album also features guests like Deborah Bonham, Peter Bullick, Maggie Bell, Joe Bonamassa, Bernie Marsden, Paul Rodgers, and a lot more. Malcolm also reveals some other projects that might possibly see the light of day in 2024. So check out the album on Quarto Records, at malcombrucemusic.com, or wherever you get music these days. For decades, drag performers have made a home in the ancient ridges and valleys of the Appalachian mountains. In Cumberland, Maryland, in the historic Embassy Theatre downtown, you can catch a glimpse of something glamorous and unique to this corner of the Rust Belt. Photographer Michael Snyder, who grew up in nearby Frostburg, first experienced the Cumberland drag scene more than a decade ago. He would return again and again, before starting to photograph the drag performers. His pictures capture the glamour and grit of Cumberland's queens. Bruce Baker, known on stage as Mary Jane LaFay, joins us to talk about performing in Cumberland's drag scene. Snyder's photography exhibit, "The Queens of Queen City," is open July 29 through August 19, 2023 in Allegany Art Council's Saville Gallery in Cumberland. Later in the show, Kijana West discussed founding a new hub for LGTBQ+ community building in the region. Safe Space Cumberland opened last November, and offers virtual and in-person services. Scenes from queer life in Allegany County are also captured in Rae Garringer's essay in the recent edition of the Virginia Quartely Review. Garringer is the founder of Country Queers, an ongoing, multimedia, community-based oral history project documenting rural and small town LGBTQIA+ experiences. Small talk VII   This week, we share another episode of Small Talks, where we share small interviews with previous guests. This week, we share Small Talks with Darla Ashton, Hank Poore, Sean Sweeney, Shelley Anderson, and Tami Altschuler!   Before the interviews, Chris and Rachel talk about the CRAAP test. This test provides a list of questions to ask yourself when deciding whether or not a source is reliable and credible enough. CRAAP stands for Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose.   Small Talks this week:   First, Darla Ashton shares about creating visual schedules with resources like Lesson Pix and the Choiceworks App (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/choiceworks/id486210964). Chris notes that we can also consider “amorphous” visual schedules, a type of schedule where the pieces are dynamic and move around as necessary if there need to be changes to he schedule. These can help kids who are learning to be more flexible thinkers.   Second, Hank Poore and Chris discuss the pros and cons of turning off the feature where a word is played aloud when each button is touched. Chris talks about that Bruce Baker advising him to have the word read after each time a button is pressed; this can help keep communication partners engaged by giving them a auditory prompt to keep waiting for the message, but it likely comes down to personal preference.   Third, Sean Sweeney talks about JamBoard and a recent experience he had adapting a role playing game for play in et students to help participate in a shared space, more than google slides. Found a free RPG called Movie Night. Having the students design characters and use JamBoard for everyone's character. Also uses slides on JamBoard to explain the game in a way that is easier to understand. Kind of like a virtual white board. Julia Dweck has links to a bunch of jam boards at https://linktr.ee/GiftedTawk   Fourth, Shelley Anderson shares her strategy of working with a student's preferred toy/instrument to elicit more language production. Shelley takes a gathering drum and a wooden frog that makes a croaking sound  and teaches language and prepositions to a student who loves the frog (e.g. “The frog is under the drum”).   Finally, Tami Altschuler wishes that there could be more care and communication between school-based and hospital-based SLPs before surgeries occur. If an AAC user is going to stay in the hospital, Tami would love for SLPs to contact her for better transferring care between the hospital and the school setting.    Visit talkingwithtech.org to access previous episodes, resources, and CEU credits that you can earn for listening to TWT episodes!   Help us develop new content and keep the podcast going strong! Due to poor NBN connection, the audio from this podcast is occasionally at times substandard. I apologies for the poor connection.  You will still enjoy the stories Bruce has to tell. Born in Melbourne, to ten pound pom parents,  Bruce moved around during his younger years across Australia & PNG. His aspirations growing up were to be a pilot. Due to colour blindness, this was an unattainable goal. This led to his career choice, as a surveyor working in the Surveying & Spatial industry. He has had a great career travelling the world & has been in the industry for over 20 years, with a varied career from the water to the land. He is a geospatial professional with a passion for solving problems and developing solutions with the use of information technology. With an enquiring mind he went out into the world with a hunger to learn & he has never stopped learning. He loves all forms of surveying as they all relate to each other & can take you to places you never thought possible. Over the years he has had many positions & titles, this is due to Bruce always looking for the next big thing, or how he can help his employees grow & better themselves.  A recipient of numerous awards, his accomplishments include best outstanding Graduate for his Bachelor of Science from Curtin University, as well as awards as a long term committee member of the Australasian Hydrographic Society (AHS). He enjoys the simple things in life that run parallel with his career such as mountain bike riding & being on the water paddle boarding.  Bruce supports Beyond Blue for mental Heath. Dr. Bruce Baker continues the summer sermon series, "Wisdom in Bite-Size Pieces" with a sermon on "Hungering and thirsting for righteousness is a wisdom issue." Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis wants to spend state tax money to help families send their children to private schools. In the past, the state's courts have ruled vouchers unconstitutional, driving the creation of a tax-credit scholarship program instead. As that scholarship program has blossomed to the size of a major school district, with demand on the rise, DeSantis aims to blow up the distinction between it and vouchers. "If the taxpayer is paying," he said, "it's public education." But is it, really? We turn to Rutgers University education professor Bruce Baker, author of the School Finance 101 blog and a leading national expert on education finance, to dissect DeSantis' simple, appealing yet controversial statement. With the recent economic collapse and rising income inequality, lessons drawn from turn-of-the century capitalism have become frequent. Pundits, policymakers, and others have looked to the era to find precursors to an unregulated market, corrupt bankers, and severe economic inequality. The comparisons are often too simple, however. In their new book, The Cotton Kings: Capitalism and Corruption in Turn-of-the-Century New York and New Orleans (Oxford University Press, 2015), Barbara Hahn and Bruce Baker examine capitalism at the turn of the century, telling a more nuanced story about the cotton market, politics, and regulation. The Cotton Kings examines the ups and downs of the cotton futures market, explaining how cotton brokers were able to keep cotton prices low by controlling information. This enriched the brokers, but impoverished farmers. A small group of brokers in New Orleans successfully cornered the market in the early 1900s, in effect, self-regulating the cotton market and raising prices for years. The Cotton Kings traces the exciting story of this turn of events and explains why such self-regulation was not enough in the long run. Ultimately, The Cotton Kings makes a strong argument in favor of federal regulation to control corruption and help farmers and manufacturers alike. In this episode of the podcast, Hahn and Baker explain this cotton futures market and its ups and downs around the turn-of-the century. They also discuss some of the heroes and dramatic episodes of the historical moment. Finally, they discuss the lessons from that time for our present moment.
