During the pandemic, which was a shutdown of the Ivy League season, Coach Hogan was able to attain the Bill Bidwill Coaching Fellowship, a program started by the Arizona Cardinals in 2015 to help increase diversity in the coaching ranks and provide more opportunity for experience on the NFL level. Recently named to FootballScoop's Minority Watch List, Hogan worked with the offensive staff and served as an assistant in the quarterback room during his time with the Cardinals. He helped with the creation of install tapes, game breakdowns, play drawings, and assisted with game and practice data input among other duties. Prior to his time in the NFL, Hogan spent three seasons at nearby Cornell. During his time with the Big Red, Hogan served as the wide receivers coach where he developed several record-setting players at that position. Along with his role with the Arizona Cardinals, Hogan has served in similar NFL capacities in the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship with the Baltimore Ravens in 2019, Indianapolis Colts in 2017, and the Buffalo Bills in 2016. Sports and artificial intelligence aren't two areas that often intersect. That has begun to change as IoT and wearables have begun to be adopted by more professional sports teams. The data that's produced can be used to identify areas of performance improvement, potential future injuries and insights about team structure on the field. Today's guest, Param Hegde, former CTO of Catapult Sports joined the show to share how the company is using data-driven intelligence to help athletes reach the top of their game. Please note: this interview was taped in late 2021. Since then, Param Hegde has moved on from Catapult to another endeavor. Originally founded in Australia, Catapult Sports has been a leader in the sports analytics sector for some time. This year, the winner of the 2022 Super Bowl, the Los Angeles Rams, even wore Catapult Sports tech demonstrating just how far the company has come. Param and Pieter discuss the technicalities of building such software and other areas of sports that AI may be applied. Unbnd’s MIA mixed reality platform will allow viewers to watch live games, highlights, and original programming through a 360-degree virtual theatre environment that displays real-time game statistics and interactive branded content. Super Rugby content when its broadcast rights are renegotiated in 2020. Games such as the NRC, Junior Wallabies matches and more could be available for free in the next broadcast deal as the governing body looks to bring more rugby to different platforms for free. The problem has been that so much rugby has been paywalled for a long time so different platforms should come to the fore. Last Friday’s Women’s State of Origin rugby league match between Queensland and New South Wales used live GPS-based statistics via Catapult’s devices during the live broadcast for fans watching at home. Both teams wore Catapult GPS devices that tracked position, and that data was used to show metrics to the audience such as speed and distance covered, and to track effort and intensity on the field. Catapult Sports, the NRL, and Channel Nine had already been providing live GPS data for the Men’s State of Origin series since 2017.

No Holds Barred is the podcast from SB Weekly where three leading sports executives reveal their industry bugbears, question accepted wisdom, and try to make sense of the major developments currently impacting the global business of sport. Each guest comes armed with a view on an industry topic that’s been piquing their interest over recent weeks, and in a short and impassioned pitch will explain exactly why they feel strongly about it, who’s going wrong and where, and what the implications could be for various sectors of the business. Nothing’s off limits, and the person who argues their case the best will be declared No Holds Barred winner and receive something far better than a trophy - industry kudos. In April 2017's No Holds Barred Matt Cutler is joined by Matt Rogan (Chairman of Two Circles and Executive Director at ESP Properties), Simon Banoub (Global Director of Marketing at Catapult Sports) and Richard Gillis (Founder of Unofficial Partner). Topics discussed include: - Why technology rarely solves rights-holder problems, and can actually cause more damage than good - How and why the media needs to be more responsible when building stories around data - Why 'passion' has become the default focus for lazy sponsorship activations.
In episode 12 of The Startup Playbook Podcast, I interview Adir Shiffman, Chairman of Catapult Sports - the world leader in wearable athlete analytics for elite sport. Adir has had an incredible career. Initially qualifying in medicine and practising as an MD, Adir made the switch across to becoming a startup founder and over a period of a decade launched, built and sold 3 high-growth Australian companies, including HelpMeChoose.com.au to Mortgage Choice. Adir is now the Chairman of Catapult Sports - the world leader in wearable athlete analytics for elite sport. Catapult Sports provides their hardware and software to the elite teams in the AFL, EPL, NFL and NBA. Catapult Sports IPO'ed in December 2014 and since then has gone on to acquire 3 different companies, cementing their position as the world leader in the industry. In this interview, Adir covers a range of topics including transitioning from MD to startups, how to find your strengths, the 3 skill that every startup needs, the challenges of scaling, why having a point of difference is important, how and when to acquire companies, the pros and cons of an IPO and getting investment from Mark Cuban. Basketball season is now in full swing. But here at Popular Science, we’re ahead of the game. We’re looking beyond 2015 to see what sports will look like 10, 20, or even 30 years down the road. In this episode of the podcast, we talk to Marcus Elliott, founder of the Peak Performance Project, or P3. The company uses a slew of data to build better athletes. And we hear from Ryan Warkins, who works at Catapult Sports, a company that tracks athletes with all kinds of sensors. We discuss how to keep star players injury-free and playing at their best. To figure out how to put together a team that works like a well-oiled machine, we talk to Dean Oliver, vice president of data science at TruMedia Networks. He says that numbers have a huge amount of power in sports but that it all comes down to how they’re analyzed. Looking back into the PopSci archives also brings up some painful (if hilarious) memories about how we used to train elite players back in the day. Take, for example, the basketball “bumpers” from April 1941, designed to protect your fragile eyeglasses. Or how about a high-tech training exercise using action figures from March, 1940? The ways we play (and watch) sports have come a long way in the past 75 years, and they’ll be changing even more going forward. Tune in to find out how.
