Sales leader, quota crusher, champion of grassroots basketball, hockey podcaster, and arguably the OG of Canadian digital media sports sales—Tony Luccisano, stops by to chat. A native of Toronto's Little Italy neighborhood, Tony studied biology with the goal of becoming a doctor. To use his words, his grades weren't going to cut it for med school, which quickly shut down that plan. After school he joined the Financial Post as a Business Manager, but would move into online financial service sales with the Datagroup. Tony's digital ad sales career started with Canoe. He departed Canoe for TSN—arguably Canada's largest and oldest sports media brand, where he would enjoy a nearly 13-year career. A move to competitor Sportsnet was short-lived after a sales team restructuring. Tony has since turned to consulting, putting his experience and success to work for companies looking for fractional growth and experience to jump-start their revenue potential. But Tony's move into consulting isn't entirely by design. Like many experienced members of the Canadian media industry, his career has been impacted by ageism. We close out our conversation by discussing the impact ageism has had on his career, and why it's important for the industry to reject this form of discrimination. www.mediapeople.ca www.instagram.com/vicgenova/

Rob is back on the same day Massachusetts announces the return of fans to 100% capacity at the end of the month. Chris gets a reprieve in this episode as Rob does an amazing job on bringing us truly behind the scenes on the weeks leading up to Opening Day at the WooSox. This is an absolute must listen for anyone looking to work in sports with a blow by blow account of each day and every issue that can go wrong before the first pitch. In true Rob fashion, he has a rabbit story before we actually dive in. Chris apparently isn't the only one with animal stories. This episode may be the truest and most in depth peak behind the curtain we've done to date as it makes you feel as though you are living each moment with Rob. Plus, hear how Rob lost his temper on the fireworks vendor due to the amount of time it took to start the show after the Friday game. Sports Jobs are back! Chris and Rob get back to the basics and provide you the answers to the test to help you nail your interview and land your dream job in sports. We touch on separating yourself from the pack by bringing the heat in your interview. Want to get yourself out of the dreaded pile? If you still say "get your foot in the door", want to work in marketing but are applying for a sales job, or feel frustrated by your lack of direction... this episode is for you. Plus Chris was challenged in an informational interview by the one that got away from Rob.
Chris is back at Fenway after 18 months of not seeing a baseball game live. He describes his experience and how it felt like he never left. We also learn Rob likes go to really fast in a car. Also we are all in agreement that MLB has a great rule change with the runner on 2nd Base to start extra innings. Chris shares some backstory on the new Red Sox city jerseys that honors the Boston Marathon and how it is a great marketing tool to reach a younger generation. We dive into the MLB All-Star Game decision to move it out of Atlanta and how that will have a ripple effect in a lot of key areas. We also have a ROB RANT alert when we discuss the cliche of a "strategy job" right out of college. Word of advice... don't tell Rob you are looking to come to work for him and set the strategy for the organization before you learn to tie your shoes!
Happy Opening Day! We made it! Chris gives a fired up speech and reflects on the past year of how far we've come in the sports industry. His key message is "everything is going to be alright!" Rob tells a funny story that of course resonates from Battle Creek about pulling tarps.... which he is still doing today. The guys discuss what work/life balance really means in our industry and how we can do a better job of defining that for younger people starting out. Rob also had a message for Martie when he used to make him come in early on game days. Sorry Martie! We give a real peek behind the curtain on real time emails and the new digital ticketing issues MLB has instituted. This leads to a classic FoF moment when Rob laughs uncontrollably leading to a hiccup outburst. We wrap up with advice on how to approach a career change after your resume has no relevant experience. Tom Short is a former D-I and USA Olympic team basketball official, who is now the Chief Growth Officer with Lappin180. Lappin180 trains companies on how to change the conversation with customers to change results… all with the right mindset. Great tips for all walks of life.
Happy National Women and Girls in Sports Day! We start out with a huge shout out to all the women in our industry who do great work and are paving the way for future women. This leads us down a path of rehashing the 1996 USA Gymnastics team which uncovers another fun fact about Rob. He was a High School classmate with one of Chris's huge crushes, Dominique Moceanu, the star of the team. 14 year old Chris is super jealous! Big news out of EA Sports as they announce the return of NCAA football to their portfolio. This all ties back to the new rules around NCAA Athletes having the ability to monetize their likeness. Rob also nails the amount of money EA pays for Madden rights. Chris started watching the Tiger Woods doc on HBO which provides insight into the rise and fall of the planet's biggest sports star. Rob and Chris are blown away by Lionel Messi's contract... Almost $700M! Rob throws Chris for another loop when he shows him the pants he currently has on during the recording... ZUBAZ pants. Only Rob!
Chris is having a rough week and shares his experience with "Pandemic Burnout." The little things at work that have been setting him off causing him to feel stress are outside his norm. The main takeaway is it's OK to not be OK but make sure you tell someone about it. Rob received a great email from a WooSox potential employee that people need to hear about. Looking to separate yourself from the pack? This is the way to do it. Chris and Rob agree that Craps is the best casino game out there because you all win or lose together. This leads into a GameStop conversation on how the stock is through the roof and manipulated by Reddit. This leads to another hot commodity going right now... Baseball Cards. Dust off your old cards because they may be worth a fortune on eBay. If you can't land your dream sports job you can always make money on the internet!
Rob and Chris delve into an alternate reality and banter on what they would do if they won the current Mega Millions jackpot of $975M. Rob would be "cheap" and rent houses instead of buying them while Chris would hire a driver to ensure he never sits behind a wheel again. Rob gives an update on the WooSox job search and how people separated themselves to make it onto Round 2. Chris gives details on the two new FSM roles that were posted that will focus on helping expand FSG's portfolio. Chris takes us behind the scenes of the NCAA sports business model from his previous time working on behalf of Boston College. Happy belated birthday to our beloved host, Rob Crain! We've got an episode that runs the gamut this week. Chris recaps his intergalactic out of body experience while viewing a meteor shower this past weekend at Cape Cod. We also learned about his potential unhealthy infatuation with space that is aided possibly by extra curricular activities. Rob begins by digging a hole with his wife Amy around his hot takes on Wedding Anniversaries. In sports related content, Rob recaps the happenings around his job posting with the WooSox. With having already received over 100 candidates, Chris and Rob discuss the proper way to go about getting your name to the top of the list. One key point Rob touches on is the former interns who have reached out about the position. He was able to immediately separate the good from the bad stressing how important an internship performance can be. Rob highlights the candidate pool and how much experience some of the people have showcasing how important it is TO DO SOMETHING! Chris gets philosophical and gives Rob a pop quiz on post pandemic life. Rob once again showed off his pipes with a rendition of Semisonic's "Closing Time". Rob issues a challenge for everyone to reach out to 5 people over Thanksgiving that they do not know and try and secure a conversation with those people to introduce themselves. Sales Game Changers | Tip-Filled Conversations with Sales Leaders About Their Successful Careers
Read the complete transcript on the Sales Game Changers Podcast website. Jim Van Stone is the President of Business Operations and the Chief Commercial Officer for Monumental Sports and Entertainment, the company behind the Washington Wizards NBA team, Washington Capitals NHL hockey team, and other teams and enterprises and the arenas where they play. EDITOR'S NOTE: Since we conducted this interview before the Pandemic of 2020 hit, we asked Jim what his advice is for sales professionals during the pandemic. He offered the following: The evolving landscape is an opportunity to provide clarity of your brand: stay true to your foundational principles and let those guide your decision-making. Consistently showcasing your value will help you weather systemic changes. People expend resources - time, money or loyalty - based on its connection to a return on investment. The Work in Sports Podcast - Insider Advice for Sports Careers
Want to Work in Sports? Of course you do! Bottom line: If you have sales skills, you'll go far. Bill Guertin is the guy who trains the sales staffs of pro teams around the nation, he knows what teams need and want on staff, and he joins us on this weeks podcast!Hi everybody, I'm Brian Clapp, Director of Content for WorkinSports.com and this is the Work in Sports podcast. As many of you know, we hosted a Sports Career Accelerator event a few months back in Atlanta. 2 days of intensive learning and exposure to top flight sports teams and orgs in the Atlanta region. But let me give you a little behind the scenes. Trust me, it relates to this week's episode, this isn't just a trip down memory lane.Day 1. Our first event like this, and to be honest, not exactly my comfort zone – I'm not always a small talk guy.But I was pretty relaxed because we had a guy on the ground in Atlanta doing all of our logistics and would be essentially shepherding all the guest speakers in place, navigating where we go at what time, Sign ins, swag bags… he had things covered. So I wake up morning of the event, get a good breakfast at my hotel, get changed up and walk to the event. It's about 7:30am…things don't start til 8:30. I'm relaxed and calm because the pressure is not on me.Then I get a text message. Our guy is not just sick… he's out. Down and out. Like heading to a clinic because he hasn't stopped vomiting for a few hours.I've been in a few pressure situations over my career, so I don't exactly panic…but I also don't feel I have everything I need to succeed which means I'm not exactly comfortable. And then an attendee shows up… early, very early.Hello Sean Grassi if you are listening.I'm now scrambling to get people checked in, hand out swag, give out badges… and it's not the best start in the world.People are filing in, they are in the room we rented, but it's deathly quiet in there. I' scrambling in the front of the lobby….and the vibe is…shall I say, poor. Then I see Bill Guertin come around the corner, one of our guest speakers. He takes one look at me and says…here, I got this, and he walks into the room with our guests.Next thing I know I hear chatter, and laughing, and cavorting and cajoling. Bill came in and just started to own the room.I had a mentor once who said – leaders change the temperature of the room when they enter. Think about that for a second – the idea is, everyone can feel a leader when they enter. It's a changing presence, an attention grabber.Bill has that, and more. Right then I thought, OK, this guy is good, he can control a room with ease…which isn't easy. Then I started to listen in, then I started to check his resume, then I started to admire.Bill has worked with over 100 professional sports teams to help train their sales staff… from the Boston Celtics, to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Football teams, basketball, baseball, NASCAR, hockey – if you have a sports event and a sales staff, Bill is the guy to train them. And, lucky us, he's our guest this week as we dig deeper into the role that comprises a huge percentage of sports employees. Here's Bill Guertin – and stay tuned at the end of the show for a special offer from Bill's company ISBIQuestions for Sales Trainer Bill Guertin:Listen to the episode for the answers!1: You've been in the sales game since 1992 – specifically in sports sales since 2004 – you are truly the expert in the field having worked with over 100 professional sports teams. I'll make the first questions really simple…or complex in it's simplicity, you decide… why sales? Why has sales been your calling?2: What I think I'm most impressed with about you, and there are many things, but I know how difficult it can be to get in with pro teams as an outside resource. How did you go from being a sales manager of a local radio station in Kankakee, Illinois to the trusted sales trainer of pro sports?3: Go back to the beginning – what was the first team you worked with, and what was that experience like?
In this episode, Explore La Crosse Director of Sports Sales & Events Jeremiah Burish, Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Tourism Stephanie Klett, St. Germain Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Penny Strom and Packers analyst Larry McCarren.
Episode 19 of Vicious Talk with Benny P features my brother Zach Perez. We talked about his job as an account executive in the group events & hospitality department of the professional baseball organization he works for. He provided some great advice and insight into the sports sales industry. We also spread some awareness about cranial facial differences because my beautiful niece, his daughter, was born with Goldenhar Syndrome, and we love her even more because of it. Always a fun time catching up with my brother, and I hope you enjoy the listen!

Download the action plan here: http://jimharshawjr.com/action/ Today I bring you Greg Hatcher. Greg is a 1983 graduate of Alma College (Michigan) where he lettered in wrestling, soccer and baseball. Following graduation he began selling insurance for Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield. For a record six of his seven years he was named Account Executive of the Year. Greg then struck off on his own, starting the The Hatcher Agency from scratch in September of 1990 with a loan from the bank, an assistant, and 500 square feet of office space. He signed a 3 year lease thinking it would be all he would ever need but at the end of the first year he had outgrown his office space, had grown to 7 employees and produced more insurance than any agent in the state of Arkansas. Three years later The Hatcher Agency was named Arkansas' Small Business of the Year and was the largest health insurance agency in the state. They’ve led the state of Arkansas in health insurance sales every year since. Today, The Hatcher Agency has grown to 50 employees and insures over 180,000 individuals. They’ve been recognized as among the top 1% of health insurance producers nationwide. In 1999, Greg wrote a book called 55 Steps to Outrageous Service, which outlines the service that The Hatcher Agency delivers everyday to their clients. It has sold over 15,000 copies and a publisher has purchased the rights to the book and is printing over 100,000 copies. Greg’s greatest work has come from getting wrestling started in the state of Arkansas. He founded The Arkansas Wrestling Association and has purchased the mats for 60 high schools and 4 colleges to help get new programs started. Because of this, he has been honored with the “Dan Gable America Needs Wrestling Award” and been named WIN Magazine’s Man of the Year. Because of his efforts, over 4,000 kids now wrestle in Arkansas. Let's connect: Website | Facebook | Twitter About Your Host Jim Harshaw My name is Jim Harshaw. You and I were both wrestlers once so we’re coming from the same place, which is a good place for us to start. And I know where you’re at. You’re working hard and qualified for what you do but you aren’t getting what you want. You have plans on getting to the C-suite or launching a business but ultimate success seems as far away today as ever. You’re at the right place because you can get there from here. And I can help. Who I Am I’m a speaker, author and former Division I All American wrestler that helps motivated former wrestlers reach their full potential by getting clarity on their what they really want and taking agressive action to lead their ideal life. I’m a husband and father of four. And I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve launched multiple successful businesses as well as the obligatory failed one. I’ve been the executive director of a non-profit and have raised millions of dollars. I’ve worked in sales. I’ve even been a Division I head coach. While I was born in a blue-collar home I have spent my life surrounded by Olympians, CEO’s and millionaires. Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” I’ve been lucky. I’ve learned the habits of successful people and guess what. You’re just like them. I know because I know your type. You’re programmed for hard work, which is a prerequisite for success, but you’ve never been shown how to use what you know to create the life you want with the tools you have. I will show you how. Why You are Here You were a wrestler. You’ve trained and competed in the world’s toughest sport. You’ve set goals and maybe even set records. You’ve definitely failed and you’ve at some point found yourself questioning if you were on the right track. You need to understand this: You are far more prepared to succeed than those who’ve not trained, competed, struggled and overcome like you have. That’s the value of your education as a wrestler. You are prepared to be as successful as your wildest dreams will allow. Here I will teach you, with the help of brilliant minds that have been shaped by the learning that takes place in our sport, to be who you want to be. I sense that you want this because you have read this far. To take the next step today, click here. FOLLOW JIM Website | Facebook | Twitter
