Chuck Wisner of Wisner Consulting: The Art of Conscious Conversations

People Solve Problems

Chuck Wisner, President of Wisner Consulting, joined Jamie Flinchbaugh on the People Solve Problems podcast to share his insights on improving human dynamics in conversations. With 25 years of experience advising Fortune 200 companies, Chuck has developed a unique approach to understanding and enhancing how people interact. Chuck introduced the concept of the "conversational bypass," a common pitfall in problem-solving and decision-making. He explained that people often jump from storytelling directly to action, skipping over the crucial middle steps of collaboration and creativity. This tendency can lead to hasty decisions and missed opportunities for innovative solutions. To combat this issue, Chuck emphasized the importance of conscious effort in conversations. He suggested that both individuals and groups need to take responsibility for fostering more productive dialogues. For individuals, this means being willing to set aside one's ego and perspective, opening up to different viewpoints. In group settings, leaders should encourage taking extra time to hear all perspectives without judgment or bickering. Chuck shared four key elements to consider in conversations: desires and goals, concerns about the future, authority issues, and standards. By examining these aspects, people can better understand the thinking behind their perspectives and share them more effectively with others. The discussion then turned to the importance of learning in conversations. Chuck stressed that while making decisions is often the perceived goal, the real product of these interactions is the learning that occurs. He advised that to ensure learning is at the center of a conversation, individuals must set aside their judgments and private conversations to truly listen and absorb others' positions. Chuck also explored the role of self-awareness in changing conversational patterns. He shared a personal anecdote about recognizing and altering his own trigger responses with his children, illustrating how awareness can lead to positive change in communication habits. The conversation shifted to creativity and intuition, with Chuck highlighting the importance of embracing the right side of the brain in problem-solving. He encouraged listeners to give themselves permission to dream and wonder about possibilities, moving away from resignation and towards openness. Chuck also discussed his journey in writing his book, "The Art of Conscious Conversations: Transforming How We Talk, Listen, and Interact." He revealed how the process helped him overcome his own limiting beliefs about his writing abilities and provided a structure for connecting various communication tools and concepts. In this episode of The Nonprofit Exchange, I had the pleasure of speaking with Chuck Wisner, author of "The Art of Conscious Conversation." Chuck shared his fascinating journey from being a trained percussionist and architect to becoming a thought leader in the realm of communication and conversation transformation. We delved into the importance of listening, a skill often underutilized in leadership. Chuck emphasized that true listening requires us to manage our inner dialogue and judgments, allowing us to be fully present and absorb different perspectives. He highlighted that self-reflection is crucial for developing emotional intelligence, which in turn enhances our ability to listen with empathy and compassion. Chuck's book is structured around four archetypal types of conversations: storytelling, collaborative conversations, creative conversations, and commitment conversations. Each type serves as a building block for effective communication, enabling us to better understand ourselves and others. He provided practical insights on how to navigate conflicts by focusing on shared desires and principles, rather than getting caught up in disagreements. As we wrapped up, Chuck encouraged listeners to embrace the power of questions over answers, fostering a mindset of curiosity and openness. This episode is a treasure trove of insights for anyone looking to improve their communication skills, especially nonprofit leaders who face unique challenges in their work. Unlocking the Secrets of Super Communication: Words That Win! What if I told you that the way you communicate could be the key to your success in relationships, business, and life? In this episode, I'm sitting down with the brilliant Charles Duhigg, author of Words That Win, along with insights from legendary communicators like John Maxwell, Chuck Wisner, Les Brown, and others, to uncover how super communicators connect deeply, influence others, and make their words truly impactful. We explore the three types of conversations that shape every interaction—practical, emotional, and social—and why mismatching them can cause disconnection. Charles and I discuss the art of active listening, including his game-changing concept of “looping for understanding,” which transforms not just what you hear but how others feel heard. Plus, we dive into how asking meaningful, deep questions can unlock hidden stories and values in others, forging connections that last a lifetime. You'll hear Charles's incredible story of a CIA recruiter whose career pivoted when he learned how to match emotions and communicate vulnerably. We also discuss how communication isn't just verbal—your tone, gestures, and even laughter can build trust or erode it. Non-verbal cues and emotional intelligence play pivotal roles, as Bedros Keuilian and Les Brown share how they use these tools to inspire and lead. Key Takeaways: - The three conversation types and how to identify and match them for stronger connections. - Why active listening is more about what you do after someone speaks than during. - How vulnerability and storytelling break down barriers and build trust. - The role of non-verbal communication and emotional reciprocity in creating lasting bonds. - Practical strategies for handling tough conversations and reducing judgment in disagreements. This episode is packed with actionable techniques to elevate your communication skills and become a master of connection. By the end, you'll have the tools to strengthen your relationships, lead with influence, and truly be heard. Start applying these skills today because your ability to communicate could be the key to unlocking the life you've always dreamed of. We formed stories about ourselves when we were younger, we interpret messages through our pre-existing stories, and we tell ourselves stories to help us understand the world around us. These stories have a great influence on how we relate to the people around us. So, how can we recognize the impact stories have on us and learn how to utilize them more effectively when communicating with others? Today's guest is Chuck Wisner. Rather our stories break down into facts, emotions, and opinions. He discusses how leaders often feel like they need to have all the answers, but should make the shift from being a knower to a learner. He has four questions to ask to process conversations - What are my desires? What are my concerns? What power issues are at play? Our words matter. We live in conversation. The words we hear are filtered with our biases, opinions, and prejudices, so we need to question and understand. Chuck Wisner sits down with Kevin to discuss 4 types of conversations. We often get stuck in the storytelling or the commitment. We need to do a better job with collaborative and creative discussions. New and good things can be created when we take the time to share our thoughts and debate. Key Points Chuck Wisner shares 4 types of conversations: Storytelling—Acknowledging and investigating the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves and others.  Collaborating—Exploring the way our stories interact with other people's stories.  Creating—Cocreating possibilities and discovering unforeseen solutions to sticky problems. Committing—Coordinating our actions with others to get things done. He talks about the roles of emotions, facts, and opinions in our stories. He discusses advocacy and inquiry. Conversations are vital to our existence - after all, we talk with people every day. But have you ever dissected what makes a conversation effective? When we are more conscious of how we are talking with others, we can nurture more productive connections, and avoid common pitfalls that often derail our conversations. In this episode, we explore the importance of conscious conversations, with author Chuck Wisner, whose new book The Art Of Conscious Conversations: Transforming How We Talk, Listen, and Interact is coming out in mid October 2022. Chuck's insights are built on a fascinating mix of careers: from architect to personal coach, with a stop-off as a mediator at the Harvard Law Mediation Program.  With Chuck, we discuss the four sequential stages to an effective conversation:  Storytelling Collaboration Creativity Commitment We explore the role our identity plays in shaping the stories we tell ourselves, why leaders' authority can make their voice louder, and how some of our best ideas happen when we are stimulating our creative minds. “The stories we live by and tell ourselves and others are essential to our identity.” ~ Chuck Wisner If you enjoy listening to Behavioral Grooves Podcast, please consider donating to our work through our Patreon page.
