Now here's your hosts, Allen Hall, Joel Saxom, Phil Totaro, and Rosemary Barnes. Allen Hall: Danish Renewable Energy Company, Ørsted, announced a leadership change, with CEO Mad Snipper stepping down after four years at the helm. Rasmus Erbo. Uh, the company's deputy CEO and chief commercial officer will take over as group president and CEO, uh, in February. Uh, the transition comes as Orsted adapts to evolving market conditions in the offshore wind sector. Now this, uh, I guess around the industry was expected news. Uh, if you had talked to somebody, uh, about offshore in the US, uh, they felt like what had happened over the last year or so was really rough on the leadership at Oersted, part of this too, guys, is that some of it is just happenstance, interest rates rising, the supply chain nightmares that were happening and Mads Knipper would just happen to be there at that specific time. Is, is that the feeling like it was just bad timing, uh, for Mads? Phil Totaro: Yeah, it's, it's part of it, but the, the reality I think is you, you've got a scenario where he, he was there and the buck stops here and all that sort of stuff, um, if you're the boss, but he also was one kind of overseeing a lot of the deals that got him put in place that led to all those impairments that they ended up having. It's like, yeah, okay. Interest rates are high, but. It's like he, he, you know, was there signing off on these, these deals with, uh, PSEG in New Jersey and, uh, Eversource in, in Connecticut, uh, and Rhode Island that were just frankly terrible deals. I mean, it just, they, they ended up, Orsted ended up having to pay. for whatever the utility companies had invested time and money and effort and et cetera, uh, into, you know, the development work on these deals, um, in case they decided to pull out plus, you know, uh, a little extra. And it's like, that's, that's the way it is. You know, you might think that that's typical, but when you get into a deal like this for an offshore wind farm, uh, I mean, we're starting to talk in the hundreds of millions of dollars, and it led to this, this multi billion dollar impairment that they had, you know, last year. So, you know, I think I said on the show six months ago that he was likely to be gone, and guess what? He is. Allen Hall: My feeling about it is there's just a little bit of happenstance, but that's the problem at being in leadership You don't get to choose the economic times in which you're running the company and you have to play what the cards are dealt right, I Wouldn't say any offshore wind developer in the United States. This has great numbers at the minute So it isn't like Orsted has is in a different bucket at the minute it but I I I think the, my contention at the time was New Jersey really screwed Orsted. Not the, the government in New Jersey was just negotiating in bad faith. And they wanted to take all the federal tax credits, which Orsted agreed to, and then they needed them back. And then it just went back and forth there.

Eversource Energy is continuing efforts to exit investments in emerging U. S. offshore wind projects, negotiating the sale of Interest in three wind farms, South Fork Wind, Revolution Wind, and Sunrise Wind. Eversource sold some assets last year to partner Ørsted. The sale requires regulatory approval and agreements with Ørsted. Scope depends on Sunrise Wind rebid outcome. Eversource is going to take an impairment charge of roughly 1. billion dollars due to the changing market value of those assets and the construction costs. Phil, this is a problem, right? If offshore wind isn't at least profitable, marginally profitable. You're going to see a continual outflux of companies leaving offshore wind in the U. S. And Eversource, again, is another one that's doing it, and that's a big problem for New York in my opinion. What do you think? Philip Totaro: Yeah, and obviously we all know that PSEG left the projects in New Jersey before the plug ultimately got pulled. But, we've talked, I don't know how many times on the show about the fact that U. S. companies don't seem to yet really be bought into the idea of offshore wind. Pretty much all the projects even being built are being built by foreign owned entities at this point. So it's obviously, Eversource doesn't want to stay locked into unprofitable projects and agreements. So the divestiture makes sense for them. The question is, how does anybody follow this up? the interest rates look like they're going to come down. In 2024, there's already predictions that there's going to be up to five rate cuts this year to, readjust the, the fed, interest rate. At the end of the day, I think that's going to help tremendously getting projects back on track and may end up encouraging new investors, to, to plow some money into it. including some of these big infrastructure funds that are, they've got plenty of assets under management now and plenty of cash at their disposal. And they're, looking around. Joel Saxum: To note here too, guys, this isn't an odd concept of 50 percent ownership, 50 percent ownership, we're selling our ownership over here, we're selling our ownership over here, because this happens in offshore wind in the European market all the time. You hear, ah, Kodawind here was bought by this, and this guy's divested here. These are all, those are financial plays. So at some point in time, I would be willing to almost bet that the Eversource game plan wasn't to buy a wind farm, operate it, and decommission it. It was going to be to get in, get it built, get it running, and enhance the value of it, and dump it for a profit. It just is at the stage where, hey, that profit just doesn't look like it may come to be right now, or it's too far off for our investing risk appetite,

It seems like industry insiders have been lamenting the aging power workforce for decades. Yet, there is still a large percentage of workers in the current workforce that are retirement eligible—some studies suggest the percentage is as high as 40%. Meanwhile, the energy transition has created a large number of new jobs building and operating solar and wind farms, enhancing infrastructure, and developing and deploying energy efficiency programs. What that means is there are a lot of open positions to be filled throughout the power industry. “Right now, we have active close to 500 postings for positions,” Sheila Rostiac, senior vice president for Human Resources, Chief Human Resources Officer, and Chief Diversity Officer with Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. (PSEG), said as a guest on The POWER Podcast. “Those jobs run the continuum of opportunities at our company from skilled craftworkers, laborers, customer service representatives, engineers, project managers, and certainly IT [information technology] and cyber experts,” she said. PSEG is a diversified energy company headquartered in Newark, New Jersey. Established in 1903, the company's principal operating subsidiaries are: Public Service Electric and Gas Co. (PSE&G), PSEG Power, and PSEG Long Island. PSE&G is New Jersey's largest provider of electric and natural gas service—serving 2.3 million electric customers and 1.9 million gas customers. PSEG Power is an energy supply company that integrates the operations of its nuclear generating assets with its fuel supply functions. PSEG Long Island operates the electric transmission and distribution system of the Long Island Power Authority, which includes about 1.1 million customers. PSEG has approximately 12,500 employees. The jobs PSEG has available are open for a number of reasons. “I had a turnover rate on retirements of about 3% last year, and so backfilling those skilled workers is part of our opening and our routine operation,” said Rostiac. “At the same time, on the growth standpoint, you know the industry is going through an incredible transformation, and we—PSEG—are doing significant capital work across the state, upgrading our gas systems, upgrading and fostering resilience in our electric systems, and managing opportunities with our nuclear business. So, some of those jobs are providing new opportunities in growth of our business,” she said. Rostiac suggested interest in job openings has been good. “Our brand is well-known and our reputation as a great place to work really does afford us strong interest,” she said. However, there's stiff competition for well-qualified candidates. “We are competing with hosts of other companies, both in the state and really across the nation, for some of those top skills that everybody is looking for—particularly in the technology areas of IT and cyber,” she said. PSEG has won a few awards to back up Rostiac's claim that the company provides a great working environment. Earlier this year, PSEG was named one of America's “Most JUST Companies,” an annual analysis from nonprofit JUST Capital ranking companies on issues that supposedly matter most to Americans when it comes to corporate leadership. PSEG ranked fourth overall out of 39 national utilities evaluated in the survey. PSEG ranked as the second-highest utility in employee work-life balance. And among all industries evaluated by JUST, PSEG ranked in the top 100 for workforce advancement. “It is an incredibly exciting time to come to work in the energy industry,” said Rostiac. “The range of career opportunities with life-changing wages and the ability to grow and be part of an industry that is essential, empowering the lives of the communities and businesses around, it's certainly a high-calling purpose and I hope that future generations see themselves as wanting to be a part of that.”

In case the US didn't know it was hitting a wall in wind development, some of its European friends are making that point more obvious of late. First, Orsted purchased PSEG's Ocean Wind 1 off the New Jersey coast. The company said the project could only continue with an optimized tax structure. But Allen notes the complicated patent dispute between GE and Vestas didn't help, as Ocean Wind will use GE's Haliade-X turbines. IntelStor's Philip Totaro says there's more to it - a lot more. Helpfully, Siemens outlined a plan for the US to get wind development back on track, onshore and off. Will the US take Siemens' advice? And can changes be made in time to meet those 2030 renewable goals? Joel says "nope." It will take years to overcome a shortage of experienced workers stateside, with the Jones Act's requirements on using American workers, a lack of training programs, and little clarity from the Federal government. As China prepares to "move beyond the 18MW threshold," when, and how, will the US get wind development back on track? Allen Hall: This week's topics include Orsted and New Jersey's PSEG for ocean wind, one in the US Atlantic and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy puts together a plan of how to get American offshore wind and on shore wind rolling. Joel Saxum: On the heels of that, something we've been talking about kind of regularly over the last few months of the Jones Act and some of the other things that the, the US needs to get in shape. Joel Saxum: Making these offshore goals happen. As we talk about this American Offshore Worker Fairness Act, that's a bipartisan act. Try to close up some loopholes to ensure that the people going offshore do have American passports. Allen Hall: And Phil Totaro from IntelStor joins us for this episode. So it's nice to have Phil back on the podcast. Allen Hall: I'm Allen Hall, president of Weather Guard Lightning Tech, and I'm here with my good friend from Wind Power Lab, Joel Saxum, and this is the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast. Allen Hall: All right. So big news out of New Jersey. Danish developer Orsted who we know well, has signed a deal with US Energy Company, PSEG public Service Enterprise Groups which was my power provider when I lived in New Jersey. So they're, they're buying the 25% state PSEG has had in the 1.1 gigawatt ocean wind, one project off the coast of New Jersey. Allen Hall: Orsted will now own 100% of that project once this transaction is complete. Pbs egs, chief Commercial Officer, Lathrop Craig said that it become clear that it was better for his group to step aside and allow, quote, better position investor to join the product so that it can proceed with an optimized tax structure that's. Allen Hall: Very weird language but Ocean One is, was, is still planning to use GE Hallide X 12 megawatt wind turbines that have run into patent issues with Siemens Ga Mesa. So we have. It's by Brandon Michael and seen on stockmarket.com. Here are some quotes from Mr. Michael. “Investors keen on renewable energy stocks may be looking at the likes of Canadian Solar (NASDAQ: CSIQ). The company yesterday made its first move in the battery energy storage space in the United Kingdom… Elsewhere, Algonquin Power's (NYSE: AQN) Liberty unit is working with Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: FB) on a new wind power project in Michigan… With that being said, check out these renewable energy stocks… 1) Blink Charging (NASDAQ: BLNK) The company currently operates and maintains over 30,000 charging ports across 13 countries. Additionally, most of Blink's charging stations are linked via its global network, allowing users to seamlessly charge at any of its locations worldwide… The company announced record first-quarter results. Blink saw its total revenues soar to $9.8 million, a massive 339% increase year-over-year. The company attributes this massive growth in revenue to increased product sales and service revenues. Besides that, the company also sees 3,174 charging stations contracted or sold, a 99% year-over-year increase. With Blink expecting this momentum to persist through 2022, should you invest in Blink stock? 2) Ormat Technologies (NYSE: ORA) Ormat is a geothermal industry leader that has supplied power-generating equipment for customers in over 30 countries. Apart from that, it also has expertise in energy storage solutions. The renewable energy company reported its earnings for the first quarter of the year… Ormat generated revenues of $183.7 million, an increase of 10.4% year-over-year. The company owes this revenue growth to its Electricity segment performance as well as its strategic capacity additions. Next to that, its adjusted net income came in at $18.4 million, rising 20.8% from $15.3 million. Accordingly, diluted earnings per share were $0.33, growing 22.2%... The company also provided its guidance for the rest of the year. Ormat forecasts revenues to range between $710 million and $735 million… Is Ormat stock one to watch? 3) Sunrun (NASDAQ: RUN) It has pioneered home solar service plans to make local clean energy more accessible to everyone. The company's innovative home battery solutions also bring more affordable and reliable solar energy… Sunrun reported its financial results for the first quarter of 2022. The company saw its revenue increase by 48% to $495.8 million. Besides that, it saw a 27% growth in its Solar Energy Capacity Installed in the first quarter, exceeding its guidance. Sunrun also grew its customer base by 20%, now totaling 689,774 customers as of March 31, 2022. For the rest of the year, the company expects its Solar Energy Capacity Installed Growth to be 25% or more, an increase from its prior guidance of 20%. Considering Sunrun's performance, is Sunrun stock worth adding to your watchlist? 4) SolarEdge (NASDAQ: SEDG) Its products include SolarEdge Power Optimizer, SolarEdge Inverter, SolarEdge Solutions, and SolarEdge Monitoring Software. It is noteworthy that the company's power optimizers provide module-level maximum power point tracking and real-time adjustments of current and voltage to the optimal working point of each PV module… SolarEdge announced its first-quarter financial results… It reported a record revenue of $655.1 million, up 62% from $405.5 million in the same quarter last year. Its solar segment, which makes up most of its revenue, brought in a record $608 million, an increase of 62% year-over-year… Net income came in at $68.8 million in the past quarter, rising 24% from $55.5 million. Diluted earnings per share were $1.20, up from $0.98 in the same quarter last year. All things considered, should you add SolarEdge stock to your portfolio? 5) Enphase Energy (NASDAQ: ENPH) Enphase is a renewable energy company that designs and manufactures home energy solutions. It is a global energy technology company and also the world's leading supplier of microinverters-based solar storage systems. With its smart and easy-to-use solutions, the company connects solar generation, storage, and energy management into one intelligent platform. Enphase's semiconductor-based microinverters convert energy at the individual solar module level and bring a system-based approach to solar energy management… The company reported better than expected results for its first quarter. Its revenue came in at $441.3 million, exceeding the $420 to $440 million the company forecasted last quarter. Additionally, this signals a revenue growth of 46.2% compared to the same period last year. Besides that, Enphase raked a net income of $51.8 million, up by 63.5%. Accordingly, diluted earnings per share were $0.37 compared to $0.24 in the year prior. For its second-quarter outlook, it foresees revenue to range between $490 million to $520 million. Given the solid quarter, should you buy Enphase stock?” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Best US Corporate Citizens This next piece is from a press release by 3BL Media announcing their terrific annual 100 Best Corporate Citizens ranking. Here are some quotes from the release. “Recognizing outstanding environmental, social and governance (ESG) transparency and performance among the 1,000 largest U.S. public companies. For the fourth consecutive year, Owens Corning (OC) tops the ranking. PepsiCo (PEP), Apple (AAPL), HP (HPE) and Cisco (CSCO) round out the top five. The 100 Best Corporate Citizens ranking is based on 155 ESG factors in eight pillars: climate change, employee relations, environment, finance, governance, human rights, stakeholders and society, and ESG performance. Using a methodology developed by 3BL Media, all Russell 1000 Index companies are researched by ISS ESG, the responsible investment research arm of Institutional Shareholder Services. There is no fee for companies to be included in 100 Best Corporate Citizens… To ensure companies in the ranking were not lobbying against Paris Climate Agreement-aligned policies, in 2021 3BL Media partnered with InfluenceMap to assess a ‘red flag' penalty to such oppositional companies. Taking it a step further, in 2022 a ‘green flag' bonus was introduced to recognize firms using their political influence and spending in support of Paris aligned policies. PepsiCo, Apple, Microsoft, PSEG and Salesforce were the only companies to receive this ‘green flag.' Click here to access the complete 100 Best Corporate Citizens of 2022 ranking and methodology.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 2 green UK stock picks Now from the UK is this article 2 green stocks that I think are no-brainer buys for the future by Jon Smith. It's found on fool.co.uk. So to some quotes from Jon Smith. 1) ITM Power (LSE:ITM) “The first green stock I like is ITM Power. The business designs, manufactures, and integrates electrolysers to produce green hydrogen. It has a range of commercial potential uses, including as fuel. The only waste is water and green hydrogen can be stored in tanks for long periods of time — it's easy to see why people are excited… ITM Power is really starting to get up and running. The stock won a project grant from the German government in January. It has secured investment from the UK government last November for the first phase of an ongoing project at the Whitelee Windfarm hydrogen facility. The share price is down 11% over the past year, but up 50% over two years. I think that with momentum from the recent investments and the prospect of increased production in the next year or so, the share price could really start to take off. There is some risk that the market finds issues with green hydrogen in practice, but for the moment I think it's a viable form of clean energy for the future. 2) Greencoat Renewables (LSE:GRP) Another company that fits the bill is Greencoat Renewables. I think this is a no-brainer buy not for share price growth, but rather for dividend income in my portfolio. The company invests in wind and other renewable energy projects in Europe, with the aim of distributing returns via dividends. Currently the dividend yield sits at 5.22%, with the share price up 1% over the past year… I like the fact that Greencoat has projects in different countries in its portfolio. Although there is a lot of exposure in Ireland, it also has projects in France, Spain, Finland, and Sweden… I do know that getting wind projects up and running can be very expensive. This might make it tough for Greencoat to step up to the next level as private investors might favour cheaper green energy options. However, I think there is enough funding already in this space to ensure the dividends stay generous and consistent.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 2 Australian tech stock picks Now to an Australian article that could be of interest to global investors. It's titled A top fund manager has been buying these ASX tech shares after the market selloff. It's by James Mickleboro and appeared on fool.com.au. Here are some quotes from Mr. Mickleboro. Note, Bigtincan is a tech company billing itself as a ‘sales enablement platform.' Now the quotes. “1) Bigtincan Holdings Ltd (ASX: BTH) According to a change of interests of substantial holder notice, Australian Ethical Investment Limited (ASX: AEF), has taken advantage of recent weakness in the Bigtincan share price to increase its stake. The notice reveals that the fund manager has picked up over 8.5 million shares since its last notice. This has lifted its holding in the sales enablement platform provider to a total of ~55.8 million shares, which is the equivalent of a 10.15% stake. With the Bigtincan share price down by almost 50% since the start of the year, it appears as though Australian Ethical sees this as a buying opportunity. 2) Nitro Software Ltd (ASX: NTO) Another change of interests of substantial holder notice reveals that Australian Ethical has also been buying this document productivity software company's shares. The fund manager has increased its stake by ~2.5 million shares to a total of just over 17.7 million shares. This represents a stake of 7.29%... Once again, with the Nitro share price down 46% in 2022, its analysts appear to believe this has created a buying opportunity. The team at Goldman Sachs would agree with this. The broker recently reiterated its buy rating and $2.35 price target on the company's shares.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Articles for UK, Australian, and International Investors—again links on this podcast's webpage 1. So help me God, I have to explain everything!” Machado de Assis, Memorias posthumas de Braz Cubas (trans. Flora Thomson-DeVeaux)
