Social media has been a huge part of our lives for the last 20 years, with its ability to connect people from all around the world to brightening someones day with a viral video or meme. Todays ep features 2 cases when social media platforms were used for a far more sinister reason. Kelsey covers a series of Death Lists that appeared on Facebook in early 2010, targeting almost 100 young people in Columbia it led to the death of 3 people before police took it seriously. Alanna details the case of Claire Miller, who stabbed her older sister in a sudden attack, and then uploaded videos to tiktok before she was arrested. Thanks for tuning in, make sure you balance out your doom scrolling with something lighter, like unlikely animal friend videos or videos of people falling down! Our Darkcast spotlight this week is A Hateful Homicide, a true crime and investigative journalism podcast dedicated to covering the stories regarding the murders and hate crimes involving our Transgender, Gender Non-binary/Nonconforming, Intersex, and Two-Spirit communities in the United States and abroad.
14-year-old Claire Miller seemed like a great, level-headed teenager to her large TikTok following. Little did they know she was struggling with major mental health issues. One night, seemingly out of nowhere, Claire snapped and brutally murdered her older sister.

The BVG has reinvented the concept of time. Ticket checkers emerge from undercover. Tempelhof art show boycott explained. A huge art exhibition inside Tempelhof airport has gained millions in public funding. But Berlin artists say it's suspicious. The so-called Kunsthalle Berlin is sponsored by big property investors, won public money without an open process, and doesn't include Berlin artists. We talk to Zoe Claire Miller about the controversy behind the exhibition. Dog owners in Berlin are terrified of a possible poisoner after at least one dog died in suspicious circumstances. Jöran is among the worried. There's not one but two apps for people to report possible poisonings - Dogorama and GiftkoderRadar. A climate change protest group called Letzte Generation has been causing traffic chaos in recent weeks by occupying autobahns. Some glued their hands to the asphalt. Angry drivers and BSR rubbish collectors attacked the protesters, then police arrived and charged them with crimes. They're campaigning for food security, pointing out the risk to humans of climate change. The BVG has altered the concept of time. Instead of displaying ‘mins' to the next train on digital signs, it's using the prime symbol: ′ (not an apostrophe). The BVG said it needed to make space for a wheelchair symbol. But does everyone recognize the prime as a sign of the time? Also, BVG ticket inspectors will no longer work undercover, but will wear blue vests to be clearly identified. It's the end of an era for Berliners trained to spot suspiciously dressed passengers with large pouches. How reliable is your COVID-19 test? Possibly zero percent, according to a website to compare Schnelltests. "I stabbed my sister!" These were the words repeated over and over by Claire Miller, the 14-year-old who allegedly stabbed her sister Helen to death and posted the video on Tik Tok. In the first case, Amy breaks down the bizarre, yet tragic details behind this ongoing case. Claire regularly posted videos on Tik Tok consisting of violent anime and other disturbing imagery. In late February, Claire admitted to stabbing her older sister Helen, who was wheelchair-bound due to cerebral palsy. Tik Tok removed an account that many believe belonged to Claire, who might've posted the murder on the platform. Although details are slowly emerging, we do know that Claire is being charged as an adult for the murder of Helen Miller. For the second story, Chris details how the disappearance of Sky Metalwala closely mirrors an episode of the long-running television series Law & Order. On November 6, 2011, Julia Biryukova claims to have been driving her children to a nearby hospital when her car ran out of gas. She says she pulled the car over and took her daughter to go to a gas station, while leaving Sky in the car. But instead of getting gas, she had her friend pick them up and return to her parked car. When they arrived back to Julia's car, Sky was missing and hasn't been seen since. Chris discusses the details that don't quite match up with Julia's account of events and how they are identical to an episode of Law & Order that she had watched previous to Sky's disappearance.Go to Hellofresh.com/tcr12 and use code tcr12 for 12 free meals, including free shipping!Send your true crime suggestions to hello@truecrimerecaps!Support the show AND listen ad-free here!: https://truecrimerecaps.supercast.tech/Follow TCR on YouTube here!Follow TCR on Instagram here!Follow TCR on Facebook here! Hello And Welcome Back To The Waffle-Free Storytelling Podcast!BEFORE WE START! Huge apologies for my DOGS! I made the mistake of talking to Claire a little too close to dinnertime :-D With that in mind... It's GUEST WEEK! IN CASE YOU NEED IT, here are the animals in the story: Daniel pig (our hero) Betsy Cow Henry Horse Geri Goat Jemima Duck Sonja Sheep ABOUT CLAIRE: "I have been seriously writing since 2001 when I attended a series of evening classes in Creative Writing. I kept writing my ideas down, whilst raising a family, until in 2016 I published my first book, ‘Pure Human City'. As my children were growing up, I worked with small groups of children creating a story at the local primary school. I loved doing this and noticed that some children came back to work with me several times. I wanted to give children outside the school environment the opportunity to have as much fun as I saw the children at the school were having, so I published my second book, ‘I Can Create Stories' in 2018. ‘I Can Create Stories' is an A4, interactive book where children can read, draw, create and listen to stories. I offered ‘I Can Create Stories' to the library, but the comment that came back to me was they didn't want to encourage children to draw in library books. To be able to give children who went to the library the opportunity to explore their imaginations I then published, in an A5 size ‘I Can Create Stories (Story Edition)' in 2019. In ‘I Can Create Stories (Story Edition)' children can read or have the stories read to them, draw on their own paper the pictures that come into their mind, create stories from the free downloadable activity sheets on my website and listen to the audio files attached to the book. I believe all children should be able to access stories in whatever way they choose. I am passionate about getting children to increase their confidence in themselves and in their abilities through story creating. I run story creating workshops for children. I have written a novel and am currently going through the steps to get it published." Claire Miller is the Movement Building Director at UU Mass Action in Boston, Massachusetts. Since 2006 UU Mass Action has been organizing and mobilizing the 20,000 Unitarian Universalists and 142 congregations in Massachusetts to confront oppression. Their pathways to justice are selected by identifying the priorities in which their congregations are engaged, engaging in our coalition partners shared priorities, assessing legislative momentum and identifying who are the most vulnerable people in the Commonwealth. UU Mass Action is committed to the abolition of fossil fuels and the just transition to 100% renewable clean energy. They believe that the technology is available to make this change, all that is lacking is the political will. They believe that they cannot wait for elected officials to take action – the people must take action. A change of this magnitude requires a shared vision and effective organizing. In the words of Naomi Klein, “It's going to take everyone to change everything.” With Claire we talk about what environmental injustices in Massachusetts, what legislation they are working on, what got them into this work, and how you can get involved.
