From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast presented by Darby Funeral Home. Today is Thursday, November 9thand I'm Keith Ippolito. McCormick Closes Congressional District Office After Threats U.S. Rep. Rich McCormick has closed his district office in Cumming due to what he described as serious threats of violence against his staff. He emphasized his commitment to their safety and reported these threats to Capitol Police for a full investigation. His staff will continue working remotely to serve constituents. Additionally, the House passed a resolution, sponsored by McCormick, to formally reprimand Rep. Rashida Tlaib for her criticism of Israel, with bipartisan support. It's important to note that there is no indication at this time that the resolutions censuring Tlaib are directly connected to the threats against McCormick's staff. President Joe Biden (D) tweeted yesterday that "MAGA House Republicans are threatening a default that that could cost us millions of jobs and trigger a recession," while they protect tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations. U.S. Rep. Mark Alford (R-Raymore) says President Biden is the one threatening default, saying the House passed a debt ceiling raise. President Biden and U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-California) will meet this afternoon on the debt ceiling, ahead of the deadline. Congressman Alford spoke about the issue in detail this morning on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri". His district includes part of Columbia as well as Hallsville, Sedalia, Clinton, Fort Leonard Wood and Waynesville. He also supports bipartisan efforts to keep AM radio in new cars, noting the numerous rural stations in his 24-county west-central Missouri district. Congressman Alford says AM radio is critical for rural Missouri news and severe weather coverage. He also says a new Columbia district office will open this summer:
We are joined for the full hour by geopolitical financial expert and financial historian, Nomi Prins, to discuss her new book, “Permanent Distortion: How Financial Markets Abandoned the Real Economy Forever,” which highlights the huge gap between the high-flying stock market, versus back down here on earth, where average people struggle to make ends meet.Nomi Prins is an economist, author, geopolitical financial expert and financial historian. She is the author of several books, including Collusion: How Central Bankers Rigged the World, All the Presidents' Bankers, Other People's Money: The Corporate Mugging of America, and It Takes a Pillage: Behind the Bonuses, Bailouts, and Backroom Deals from Washington to Wall Street. Her latest book is Permanent Distortion: How Financial Markets Abandoned the Real Economy Forever. The idea of “Permanent Distortion” is that when the financial system needs it, it gets the money. And lot of it. And in an uncapped way. And in an unregulated way. And in a non-transparent way. When the real economy needs it, it's years of debate.Nomi PrinsThere's no such thing as, “This bailout didn't cost taxpayers money.” Because…money that goes into the banking system does not go into the real economy. Which means there is a shortfall in the real economy. Which means that money cannot be reallocated into the real economy. Whether that is to build bridges, or hospitals, or to enhance our education system, or help workers. Because it's going somewhere else.Nomi PrinsThere are people that will say, “Well, SVB (the failure of Silicon Valley Bank) has nothing to do with Glass-Steagall,” and that's just simply wrong. Any over-leverage in the banking system that can take down the rest of the banking system— or that can create that sort of lack of confidence, instability, creation of money to save it that doesn't go into the real economy— is a part of that problem.Nomi PrinsThere's a huge propaganda machine. And it's interesting that the destabilization of the real economy comes so frequently from the speculation of the paper economy.Ralph NaderIn Case You Haven't Heard1. In Israel, the planned judicial reform law has sparked nothing less than a popular uprising, with Haaretz reporting that as many as half a million protesters have taken to the streets. Prime Minister Netanyahu is wheeling and dealing like mad to cling to power. Barak Ravid reports that Netanyahu sacked the Minister of Defense after he called for suspending the judicial reform push. Itamar Ben-Gvir, leader of perhaps the most extreme party in the right-wing coalition government, has threatened to quit the coalition if the judicial overhaul is delayed – but may have been appeased by a promise from Netanyahu to make the National Guard answerable directly to Ben-Gvir, per the Jerusalem Post. Axios reports that Jewish Democrats in Congress met with the Israeli Ambassador and warned him that if the bill is pushed through, it will be harder for them “to talk about Israel the same way they used to.”2. A new paper published in the Harvard Environmental Law Review – by David Arkush of Public Citizen and Donald Braman of the George Washington University Law School – posits whether fossil fuel companies should be charged with homicide. The authors argue these corporations “have not simply been lying to the public, they have been killing members of the public at an accelerating rate, and prosecutors should bring that crime to the public's attention.”3. In the wake of the Silicon Valley Bank collapse, Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders has introduced legislation that would bar big bank executives from serving on Federal Reserve Boards. Chairman Sanders said “The Fed has got to become a more democratic institution that is responsive to the needs of working people and the middle class.”4. The Huffington Post reports that Rep. Ilhan Omar has introduced a bill to “Condemn Anti-Muslim Hate.” The bill was crafted to honor the 51 Muslims killed in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2019, and it was introduced on the first day of Ramadan. Omar is quoted saying “We...know that this increase in hate is not isolated to only Muslims. Church bombings, synagogue attacks, and racial hate crimes are also on the rise. In order to confront the evils of religious bigotry and hatred, we must come to understand that all our destinies are linked.”5. An investigation by Morgan Baskin of DCist found that “local developers are buying rent-controlled apartments, clearing out existing tenants, and marketing to housing choice voucher holders” because the DC Housing Authority engages in routine over-payments. In so doing, these developers are “eroding affordable housing.”6. In Brazil, Democracy Now! reports that the Lula government has successfully removed “almost all illegal gold mining operations…from Yanomami Indigenous territory.” Lula campaigned on the promise to remove these mining operations, which have “displaced people, devastated the land and food resources, and contaminated rivers with mercury.”7. Ever have a hard time canceling a subscription or recurring fee online? In a video by More Perfect Union, FTC Chair Lina Khan explained how the agency is taking aim at a pervasive corporate manipulation tactic nicknamed “click to subscribe, call to cancel” in which companies make it easy to sign up for a service, but make it very difficult to cancel it. The new rule – called “click to cancel” – would mandate that (1) it must be as easy to cancel a service as it is to sign up for it and (2) consumers must be able to cancel using the same method they used to sign up.8. From PBS: In Florida, Governor DeSantis is expanding the “Don't Say Gay” censorship law to high-schools. Supporters of this bill had previously insisted that it was only intended to curtail discussions of sensitive topics for young children. This expansion clearly undermines that argument.9. In Chicago, the International Committee of the Democratic Socialists of America hosted Cuban Ambassador Lianys Torres Rivera at the 35th Ward - 8th District Office for a meeting with local elected officials and faith leaders. They discussed the harmful U.S. embargo and strengthening goodwill between the people of Cuba and the United States. This meeting was attended by Cook County Commissioner Anthony J. Quezada and Aldermen Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, Byron Sigcho Lopez, and Rossana Rodriguez.10. From the New York Times: At a chocolate factory in Reading, Pennsylvania, a massive explosion has left at least seven dead and more missing. Mike Reaver of Adlerhorst K9 has been involved in police dogs for most of his life. The son of Dave Reaver, founder of Adlerhorst K9 and the father of "police dogs." Mike and I finally got a chance to sit down and talk about police dogs, buying, training and selling them and most importantly the lives they save. Adlerhorst has placed thousands of police dogs, military k9 and personal protection dogs over the last 50+ years. We discuss the critical topic of CA Assembly Bill AB 742 - the bill that aims at eliminating police dogs as we know them. This is dangerous for police officers and deadly for citizens that are protected by these dogs every single day. This chat is one of the longest podcasts I've done and I think you'll agree that it could have gone on for a lot longer. Mike is a man of great character, a guy who loves dogs and speaks from his heart and soul. California Assembly Bill CA AB740 is being presented by California Assemblyman Corey Jackson. This bill aims at eliminating the use of police canines (k9s) in many situations including apprehending potentially dangerous suspects. He claims the bill will help right the wrongs of the past - a "carryover from a dark past." He uses inciteful language such as: "The use of police canines has inflicted brutal violence and lifelong trauma on Black Americans and communities of color," and more. This type of language will create knee-jerk reactions among policymakers and place many people, especially those in under-served communities in great danger. We've seen the problems things like defunding the police does to communities and I hope this video will open people's eyes to the true benefit of police canines. Michael Goosby is a decorated LAPD police officer, he served as chief K9 trainer for the LAPD and has been a police officer for over 30 years! I can't imagine a person better qualified to talk on this topic than him. This chat will give you great insight from a man of the highest character, a police k9 expert, and a man of color who cares about people. I hope that Assemblyman Jackson will watch this video and rethink his position or at least sit down with someone like Michael to educate himself on this topic. I'm assuming he didn't before proposing / writing this bill. Please contact Assemblyman Jackson here to voice your concern: 1021 O Street, Suite 6120, P.O. On this episode of Equity is, we discuss programs that target food equity. Access to food and nutrition is essential for students and families and has ties to student success in school. However, food inequity and insecurity is something that many students face. Food insecurity is usually defined as a lack of consistent access to enough food for every person in a household to live an active, healthy life. This also means providing foods that fit the cultural practices of those in need. There are various programs that target food insecurity and work to help district families and students get access to the food they need. You will hear from: Laura Crandall: Director of Food Security Initiatives, City of Philadelphia's Office of Children & Families Teisha Cavanaugh: Program Coordinator for Nutrition Education , Eat Right Philly & SNAP-Ed Erin McCrossan: Senior Research Associate, District Office of Research and Evaluation Amy Virus: Food Services Adm & Support Services Manager Links to Resources and Information from our Guests: The City's free food and meal finder, phila.gov/food, is available in 6 languages and searchable by address SDP Office of Research and Evaluation reports on SDP food insecurity data and research SDP food insecurity open data files Eat Right Philly, SDP's SNAP-Ed funded nutrition and wellness program Community solutions to food apartheid: A spatial analysis of community food-growing spaces and neighborhood demographics in Philadelphia Inquirer article on the Urban Agriculture Strategic Plan City's first Urban Agriculture Strategic Plan, “Growing from the Root” BenePhilly FPAC Anti-Hunger Subcommittee meets virtually on the third Tuesday of the month from 3:00-4:30 pm Philadelphia Food Policy Advisory Council (FPAC) OCF Community Schools OCF Food Access Blog Office of Children and Families OCF Social Media: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter Urban Agriculture Strategic Plan This podcast is about cultivating prosperity and liberation for students and staff, families, and the SDP community at large. By all accounts, our Proud to be HSD Welcome Back Relay was a huge success! Held Monday through Thursday, Aug. 30-Sept. 2, the Olympic-style torch relay covered more than 72 miles and hit 40 stops - all 37 of our school campuses, plus the new Career and College Pathways Center, Oregon Aerospace for Everyone (O-ACE) classroom at the Hillsboro Airport, and the District Office. We had more than 60 runners and 20 volunteers participate in the event, and we received an enthusiastic welcome from each school. The event concluded with closing ceremonies at the District Office, featuring the final torch run, lighting of an actual fire - approved and overseen by our friends from Hillsboro Fire & Rescue Station 3 - and sweet treats from the Kona Ice food truck. On Thursday, Sept. 2, HSD's newest school, Atfalati Ridge Elementary, was officially dedicated and opened. Superintendent Mike Scott, Board Chair Mark Watson, North Plains City Councilor Russ Sheldon, and Principal Dani Johnson addressed the crowd, unveiled the dedication plaques mounted just outside the front doors, and then ceremoniously cut a ribbon to commemorate the school's readiness for students. Despite COVID-related limitations, about 400 people were able to tour the building in small groups afterward.

This month we’re happy to welcome Jim Kovalsky of www.eFirstAlert.com When an emergency strikes, there’s nothing more comforting than having the support of your friends and family. eFirstAlert’s single address notifications can automatically notify anyone you want if there is an emergency at a specific address. Once you register an address with their service, they monitor every fire rescue dispatch, and if emergency responders are sent they'll alert you before the responders even arrive at the door.00:30 – Jim explains what eFirstAlert is and what events you’ll be alerted to (within a 2-mile radius) of what type of first responders are being dispatched. 05:36 – Jim tells us eFirstAlert was a passion project that came from his knowledge of computer science and his work as a volunteer firefighter 07:52 – You no longer need to call the fire department or turn to Facebook to figure out what’s going on around you. Your alert will be sent directly to your inbox. 09:30 – There is a business-tier version of eFirstAlert that many news reporting outlets utilize. 10:43 - Jim Kovalsky is also the guy behind Honestware tech support.11:08 – When using eFirstAlert, be aware that the address associated with the event may not be where the actual issue is. And just because units have been dispatched doesn’t mean there is an actual issue – could be a false alarm.12:57 – PLEASE, make sure your written address is visible – especially at night! Those with reflective numbers will save crucial seconds when it really counts.15:03 – If you have an emergency in your home, now your neighbors can be alerted (and may be able to help). This is all public information, no one’s privacy is being compromised. 17:07 – Sign up now – this is a FREE service because its supported by local business sponsorship. And new features are in the works.20:57 – Jim goes through some of the stations that dispatch in different areas. 22:29 – COMMUNITY CALENDAR: Jupiter Farms Residents Meeting Tuesday, March 10th at 7pm, March 14th SIRWCD Land Owners Day BBQ at 11:30am at the District Office, March 19th SIRWCD Monthly Board of Supervisors Meeting at 7pm at the Pavilion, March 21st Talkin’ Trash Community Cleanup at 8am at the Pavilion, on April 4th TWO EVENTS IN ONE – Spring Family Fun Day at 11am and at 4pm the Music Festival kicks off, both at the Pavilion.Support the show (http://www.jupiterfarmsresidents.com/donate-to-jfr/)

In 2014, Hamilton Perkins founded Hamilton Perkins Collection, an independent brand, designing and producing unique and award winning bags and accessories from recycled materials. Hamilton Perkins Collection exists to create timeless limited edition bags made from recycled plastic water bottles, pineapple leaf fiber, and billboard vinyl. The result is that no two bags are ever the same. Our first design, the Earth Bag Premium, was created so that our customers would not only carry a bag that was stylish but carry a bag they could be proud of. We surveyed more than 1,000 consumers to obtain their thoughts and feedback for each component of the Earth Bag Premium, which soon became one of our most popular designs. Perkins was the winner of the Virginia Velocity Tour hosted by the Governor of Virginia, and the recipient of a HUD Community Development Block Grant. The non-profit B Lab honored Hamilton Perkins Collection as a "Best for the World Overall" B Corporation in 2017. Hamilton Perkins Collection has been featured in Forbes, Fast Company, Money Magazine, and The Washington Post. The brand is currently offered in nearly 100 leading department stores and specialty stores in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

This week on "I Have SOMETHING To Say!", we speak to Jack Valerio, an experienced educator who has invested 44-years to serving kids in public schools. In this episode, Jack candidly shares his views on teaching, parents, students and school environments. Now that we are gearing up for Back to School, he wants us to focus on the things that really matter in order to improve the learning experience: “Stop looking for this Ph.D. nonsense or whether they have this or that experience. Start looking for the heart that the person has. There have to be two things. They have to be task-oriented and they have to be humane. And if they don’t have the balance of those two things, they don’t belong as Principal or Assistant Principal of a school, and certainly not as District Office personnel either.” #ihavesomethingtosay #urbander #podcast #education #inclusion #kidsfirst #backtoschool

''There’s something that you can only learn about yourself when you’re out there by yourself.'' - Angie Macdougall It’s easy to sit back and watch from afar. But the experience is different when you choose to live life in the front row. How are you participating in your own life? Who are you surrounding yourself with? How do they push you beyond what you thought was possible? On today’s episode of the Front Row Factor, I interview my longtime friend and one of the best examples of someone who is living life in the front row, Angie Macdougall. Since 1994, Angie started selling CUTCO® while she was a student at the University of Calgary. After graduation, Angie moved to Victoria, B.C. to open up a District Office. As Vector Marketing Canada grew, Angie was promoted to Division Manager and relocated to Calgary, Alberta. Angie achieved distinction in that role and was promoted to Western Canada Area as Manager in 2014. In 2016, Angie was named National Sales Manager of Canada. Angie is a remarkable human that I look up to and admire. We’ve worked together, we’ve traveled together and she is a powerful moment maker! Angie is also an Ironman triathlete, President of Front Row Canada, has been happily married for 15 years, is a Mother to 2 amazing kids and resides in beautiful BC, Canada. During today’s conversation, Angie shares her story, including how training for endurance sports has challenged her to push herself well beyond what she ever imagined was possible. We also talk about the spillover effects this has had on her career and how it’s impacted the lives of people around her. This interview has so much great information. Angie will inspire you to push beyond your own limits, overcome your biggest fears, and choose how you show up for yourself and for others! Here’s a quick breakdown of our chat… [11:40] Angie takes us back and gives us a peek into her childhood and what it was like growing up in a small town. [12:50] Find out how endurance sports changed what she thought was possible AND what it taught her about overcoming fear, testing her limits and strengthening her mindset. [19:30] When things get hard, that’s ok! [21:45] Jon shares a fun story that demonstrates the anticipation principle and the power of hope. [25:47] Angie shares some recipient stories about uniting as a team and pushing the limits for someone else. The Walter Reed Army Medical Center Reuse Plan provides the urban framework for 66.5 acres of land to be transferred to the District of Columbia following closing of the military installation. The planning effort was led by the District Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development and the Office of Planning. This land has valuable frontage to 16th Street and Georgia Avenue, two major axial corridors, with the former originating in the White House and the latter being a major passageway between D.C. and Silver Spring. Presenters Susana Arissó, AICP, and Martine Combal, AICP, discussed the cutting edge sustainable framework. This future neighborhood is set to become one of the five EcoDistricts in the Washington area, consisting of an exciting mixed-use development balancing new construction with historic buildings, open recreational spaces, destination retail, and residential, institutional and office uses totaling three million gross square feet. Located in an area of Georgia Avenue in dire need of revitalization, this plan envisions a "one-stop shop" for ordinary and extraordinary needs alike.
