This week on the GTCC it's a hefty debrief of G's final Milan San Remo and a soggy opening day at the Volta a Catalunya. He's been a busy boy. Oh, and the team bus ran out of hot water. Long story. After G updates you all on that, it's time to head back a couple of months to sunnier times, and G's trip to Australia. While he was there, he headed to the driving range with his old, old teammate from Barloworld, Daryl Impey. Impey's a cult hero of the sport, a South African who wore the yellow jersey at the Tour and forged a brilliant career for himself. They chatted about the evolution of the sport across their careers, retirement transitions... and if G will ever get decent at golf. It's a cracker. We're just not sure we'll ever run Daryl's proposed GTCC Golf Day. Join us for this week's GTCC ROUVY ride right here: https://riders.rouvy.com/events/72d92560-01bc-4e07-b3d1-ce8a0f4f7d95. We're also hosting a retirement party for G at the Millenium Centre in Cardiff on Sunday 16th November! This is a short excerpt from the longer episode. To listen to the whole thing and future episodes become a member of The Pelo. In this month's Chronicles Sveino and I have gone for probably our deepest dive yet - back to where we first got to know each other, taking a look at the formation of Australia's first ever World Tour cycling team, GreenEDGE. Most of you will know the team - which is now known as Jayco Alula, already, and many of you may remember those first few years and big wins. These days it's easy to take it for granted but when this team arrived in Europe it was fresh and very new, and it delivered right from the start - taking out thirty races, including Milan San Remo with Simon Gerrans in its first year of existence! As well as performing on the road the team had an amazing presence with guys like Dan Jones working to create the image of a real Australian team, and having a lot of fun along the way with a few unconventional ideas - like that infamous ‘Call Me Maybe' video from 2012. For myself as an Australian being part of a team like GreenEdge was huge. It was as close as you could come outside of the World Championships to racing for Australia. The team represented a country and a culture, and for the international riders on the team like Sveino it was a chance to be brought in to the Aussie way and to be a part of a really special team. As riders we had both experienced the team from the inside, and it played a huge role in our careers, so for this episode we wanted to really get behind the scenes and understand how the team was built, what was the idea behind it, and how and why it worked the way it did. We wanted to cover all angles and hear about the parts that even we didn't see or understand at the time. We were lucky to get hold of the son of the founder and the man who helped make it all work, Andrew Ryan, as well as head DS Matt White, star riders Simon Gerrans and Daryl Impey and our good mate Luke Durbridge who is now in his thirteenth pro season with the team. On top of all of that we spoke to the man behind bringing a lot of that fun hardworking (occasionally pie-eating) Australian culture videographer Dan Jones. Of course, Sveino and I also chip in with our own stories and experiences riding for and being a part of the team. This is a really special episode for myself and for Sveino. GreenEDGE formed a huge part of our racing career and there are so many memories there that this was a real gift to be able to record. We both really hope that it comes through to you guys and you take the time to give it a listen, it's a big one but it's a good one! Cheers! Mitch

Daryl Impey, a house hold name when it comes to a long standing and well respected pro in the world tour. Daz is a close friend of mine as we had the pleasure of crossing paths, racing side by side and living around the corner from each other and our families throughout my time in Europe. He is closing out a monstrous 16 year career this season! But it hasn't been without some major set backs and challenges along the way. He has had life threatening crashes, false allegations and teams folding right under his nose. But on the other side we have seen him pull that yellow jersey on at the TDF, become multiple national champion and transform himself from a Domestique to champion leader. Back in 2019 I sat down with Daryl to chat about the ups and downs of his career to that point and learn more about what makes him so bloody resilient! This is a must listen if you haven't heard it before, and if you have I strongly urge you go back and listen again. Daryl shows me that when you are a pro for 16 years it's never going to be smooth sailing. That's what makes a successful pro, someone who can fight back and become even stronger. But now, this week we have Daryl for Talking Luft! I wanted to pay homage to his brilliant career. We chat all the usual stuff but i have spliced a few extra questions in to wrap up his amazing career and to hear about what the future holds. Cheers, Mitch

Last year Dan Martin released his autobiography 'Chased by Pandas' which shared his unfiltered view of his career. While many autobiographies focus on their career highlights - Dan made the decision to focus on his fears as a cyclist - from the juniors to retirement. He joined us to reflect on his career - looking back on his junior career, racing with his dad and winning the British junior nationals before moving to represent Ireland. He also lifts the lid on following his cousin Nico Roche and Uncle Stephen Roche 'in the family business' sharing a room with Daryl Impey with La Pomme Marseilles and his steps into the peloton with Garmin. Plus why Liege-Bastogne-Liege is his favourite race, how he's helping pro athletes now and how you can ride with Dan Bobby and Jens is a Shocked Giraffe prouction for Velo. This episode was produced by Mark Payne and edited by Kirk Warner.
Daryl Impey Joins Bewls and Jonesy to talk about this years TDF, the tactics of the two top teams and how the race could play out. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by Rapha Well, here we are back with one of our biggest episodes for the year! I'm really excited to bring this one to life - it's not every day that you get a chance to chat with one of the all-time greats of the sport. With seven Grand Tour wins to his name, including four Tour de France victories, he is indisputably one of the best cyclists of our era. I'm talking, of course, about the legend himself, Chris Froome. Just after the TDU in January, I sat down with Froomey to talk about his incredible career, and take a deep-dive into the tactics behind his impressive win in the 2018 Giro d'Italia. I was really excited to get the chance to chat in depth with Froomey. He is, of course, a seven-time Grand Tour winner, including four Tour de France wins, two Vuelta a España wins, and one Giro d'Italia win - but his career has been plagued by rumours and unfair treatment, which I was really keen to discuss with him. And whatever your personal opinion of Froomey is, he's inarguably one of the greatest Grand Tour riders in modern cycling, and in my personal opinion, one of the greatest cyclists of all time. He's also a great bloke, but it's a side to him that not many people get close enough to know. After so many years in the pro peloton, I knew Froomey a bit, and I also know him by reputation through a few close cycling friends that we share. Even though the guy is as professional and polished as they come, I knew from his reputation that there was also another side to him - he's not just Chris Froome the multiple Tour de France and Grand Tour winner, he's also a super nice guy, pretty quietly spoken and unassuming, and even a little bit badass at times (thanks to Daryl Impey for the background stories). So for this episode, I was really keen to go behind the mask, to uncover that other side to the guy that seems almost superhuman, and sometimes so efficient that he's methodical and even a bit robotic in bike races. We chatted about how he got his start in cycling, and what it was like growing up riding a bike in Kenya. We delved into how he made the leap from Africa, to racing in Europe. And we really got stuck into chatting about that epic stage during the 2018 Giro d'Italia, where he tore the legs off everyone in the race (mine included), and absolutely dominated the fearsome Monte Zoncolan, to come from behind on the GC and take the Maglia Rosa and eventually the overall win. And of course, we spoke about the controversy that has plagued him throughout his incredibly successful career, and what it felt like to be booed, harassed, and even assaulted, day after day, on the already intensely difficult stages and climbs of the Tour de France. I really loved sitting down with Froomey and hearing from the man himself. Learning more about the trajectory that his career took, and the unbelievable highs that he was able to reach, made for a really fascinating chat. I hope you enjoy getting to know the man, and not just the myth and the legend, as much as I did, and I hope it inspires you to look at this great champion in a new light. ... Rapha presents Talking Luft! Well, the Vuelta a España has come to an end, but I managed to sneak in some time to get talking luft with the pros on race. And I've got a fresh batch of Vuelta-themed questions as we chat the hilarious intricacies of the Vuelta and Grand Tour racing. I caught up with Fred Wright, Daryl Impey, Luke Plapp and podcast favourite Luke Durbridge and asked them about cap style, racing in the rain vs. heat, their art of getting bottles from the car, grand tour saddle sores, some hilarious on-race scenarios and much more! This was a great laugh as always and I hope you enjoy the listen as much as I did. Rapha presents Life in the Peloton! The Vuelta a España is one of the 3 grand tours and it can slip under the radar after the hype of the Tour de France, but I can tell you first hand from a rider's perspective it certainly is no easy feat. It's a notoriously tough old lap of Spain, raced in September towards the end of the season and known for its steep climbs and soaring temperatures. But in saying that, there are moments where the stress levels are lower than other grand tours and you can actually enjoy yourself. And that is why I loved it, it was my favourite race, behind Roubaix of course. Naturally, I was keen to get some insight into this year's Vuelta from the pros themselves – to hear about what looks to be one of the toughest Vuelta's yet, how racing has changed from previous years and also how the battle for the points system is shaping racing this year. I thought, what better way than to chat to all ends of the peloton. On the third rest day I spoke with Fred Wright, current UK professional with Bahrain-Victorious, riding his 4th Grand Tour at 23 years of age and in fantastic form. Then I hear from long time pro, Daryl Impey in his 15th year pro, now racing with Israel Premier-Tech with 11 GTs under his belt. And, of course, I had to speak to fan favourite Luke Durbridge, who is a GT veteran having ridden 13 GT's in his 11 years pro with Bike Exchange-Jayco, but ironically this is his first Vuelta. And finally, I wanted to hear from a newbie to grand tours, Luke Plapp. He's current Australian Road Champion, 21 years of age and in his first year pro with Ineos Grenadiers, how is he finding the step into 21 day stage racing? I tell you it was a laugh to hear their brutal honesty, especially being 2 weeks in and so close to the finish line. Jump back into the world tour peloton with me for the last week of grand tour racing this season, I hope you enjoy the insight. Stay tuned next week as I take Talking Luft on race with the pros at the Vuelta. Solar eclipses the field to take a solo win into Bilbao with Daryl Impey a strong second. Roglic lends out the red leaders jersey to Frenchman Rudy Molard but stage 6 should ignite the GC battle.
Cyclist Aaron Gate has surged into New Zealand Commonwealth Games history - winning the men's road race to claim record a fourth gold medal at the Games in Birmingham. After collecting three golds on the track last week, Gates produced one of this country's great sporting moments when crossing the line after 160-kilometres of intense racing. He becomes the first New Zealander to win four golds at one Games. Despite his leg muscles constantly cramping over the final stages, he found the energy to see off South Africa's Daryl Impey and Scotland's Finn Crockett. It was New Zealand's 18th gold in Birmingham, which is our best-ever Commonwealth Games return, surpassing the 17 won when we last played host - in Auckland in 1990. On the track, Gate won the points race, individual pursuit and was part of the victorious men's team pursuit. The 31-year-old Aucklander said self-preservation became a focus over the closing stages. New Zealand have won two other medals overnight - both via our women's sports teams. The Silver Ferns claimed netball bronze with a meritorious 55-48 win over England, a team who had beaten them handsomely earlier in the Games. After a heavy loss to Jamaica in the semi-finals, New Zealand coach Dame Noeline Taurua explains what third place means for her. The White Ferns also ended a mixed cricket campaign on a high, clinching third place after chasing down England's target of 110 with 8 overs to spare. Captain Sophie Devine, who anchored New Zealand's innings with an unbeaten 51, says the future is looking bright for women's cricket. New Zealand could win another gold on Monday, when Paul Coll and Joelle King contest the mixed doubles final. Reporter Bridget Tunnicliffe spoke to Corin Dann.
New Zealand has won two gold medals on a historic morning at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham making it a record haul of 19 golds now. Cyclist Aaron Gate became the first New Zealander to secure four golds at a single Games when he surged to victory in the men's road race. Hours later, our mixed doubles squash pair of Paul Coll and Joelle King thrashed English opponents in a one-sided final. It lifted New Zealand's gold medal tally in Birmingham to 19, which is our best at any Games - surpassing the 17 won when we last played host - in Auckland in 1990. Gate's triumph came after he scooped three golds on the track, making his victory in the gruelling 160-kilometre road race all the more memorable. Despite his leg muscles constantly cramping over the final stages, he found the energy to see off South Africa's Daryl Impey and Scotland's Finn Crockett. T he 31-year-old Aucklander told Sky Sport self-preservation became a focus over the closing stages. Coll and King needed little more than half an hour to see off English pair Alison Waters and Adrian Waller. It follows Coll's gold in the men's singles last week. He said teamwork was at the heart of the straight set doubles win. New Zealand also clinched two bronze medals overnight - through our women's sports teams. Both the Silver Ferns netballers and White Ferns cricketers beat England in their play-offs for third place. They were satisfying results after both teams lost to England earlier in the Games. Silver Ferns coach Dame Noeline Taurua said the importance her team's 55-48 win shouldn't be underestimated. The White Ferns also ended a mixed campaign on a high, chasing down England's target of 110 with 8 overs to spare. Captain Sophie Devine, who anchored New Zealand's innings with an unbeaten 51, says the result was positive but she was disappointed not to reach the final. Currently, the women's beach volleyball pair of Alice Zeimann and Shaunna Polley are leading Vanuatu opponents in the bronze medal playoff.

Daryl Impey stole the show in the Tour's 9th stage, taking a breakaway win. Julian Alaphilippe remains in yellow. Luke Durbridge has the coveted Hour Classification. Can he defend it through tomorrow? The Giro Rosa wrapped up with a somewhat predictable result. Abby calls in with the latest, and then looks ahead to La Course, which takes place in Pau this week.
The Tour de France is still in Brussels, with the start and finish in the same places as they were on Saturday, although a very different test stood in front of the riders. The team time trial took the race through the birthplaces of two of Belgium’s finest figures – Woluwe St Pierre, where five-time Tour winner Eddy Merckx was born – and then Schaerbeek, where Jacques Brel was born. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and François Thomazeau cross the border into Flanders to reflect on a convincing win for Jumbo-Visma, which extends Mike Teunissen’s stay in the yellow jersey. Team Ineos set the early pace and their time survived until the last when the Dutch outfit smashed it. Before that Deceuninck-Quick Step came within less than a second of Ineos’s time and behind them were a clutch of teams within a few seconds. We assess the winners and losers and ask whether the team time trial is really an indicator of who can win the Tour. We also hear from George Bennett and Richard Plugge, a rider and boss of the winning team, Dirk De Mol, sports director of one of the day’s surprise teams, Katusha, and Jakob Fuglsang, who limited his losses after yesterday’s crash. Plus there’s reaction from Mitchelton-Scott’s Daryl Impey and Team Ineos’s Nicolas Portal. Finally we hear about François’s dish of eels in a herby green sauce and another installment of Outside the Team Bus. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Rapha and Science In Sport. Rory has had a long career. And as I found out when talking to Daryl Impey, a long career is not without it’s hiccups. “Hiccups” is putting it lightly, because before Rory could really sink his teeth into his profession career with Rabobank back in 2005, he received the piece of mail anyone would fear. […]
It has been a cliche career of ups and downs for Daryl. From major crashes, to yellow jerseys, to false allegations, to stepping up from Domestique to leader. What we realised is that to be a professional of more than 10 years the journey is never going to be smooth sailing. That's what makes a successful pro, someone who can fight back and become stronger. And this is the case with Daryl, where the lows are very low, he has been able to reach some amazing highs on the other side. Have a listen to his story.
We caught up with SA road cyclist Daryl Impey following his victory down under. We also spoke to Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur ahead of the final ODI against South Africa. We then hosted former Proteas spin bowler Paul Adams, live at our Cape Town studio.
We have a bumper edition of the Cyclingnews podcast after stage 4 of the Tour Down Under. We hear from Richie Porte, Daryl Impey, Patrick Bevin, Matt White, Tom Southam, and Michael Woods. The stage saw Impey edge out overall leader Patrick Bevin and reduce the New Zealand rider's advantage to just seven seconds with two days of racing remaining. The stage came alive on the Corkscrew climb, with Porte, George Bennett, Wout Poels and Michael Woods - the best four climbers in the race - going clear. It looked as though Bevin was in trouble but he paced himself, and used Impey's Mitchelton-Scott team to bring the race back together on the technical descent. Stage 4 is unpacked with Campbell Flakemore and Pat Shaw. A showdown on Corkscrew didn't disappoint with Daryl Impey taking the chocolates ahead of race leader Paddy Bevin. We talk all things stage 4 and get into the tactics that will be played out over the coming days.
In today's episode of the Cyclingnews podcast, brought to you in association with Sportful, Pinarello and Floyd's of Leadville, we look back at stage 2 of the Tour Down. Patrick Bevin (CCC Team) stole the show with a blistering turn of speed to win the stage and the Kiwi now leads the race from Elia Viviani by five seconds, but for the second day in a row Bevin stolen a march on the pre-race GC riders and has a 15 second buffer on the likes of Daryl Impey, Richie Porte and Rohan Dennis. Game over? We hear from Bevin, Matt White and Caleb Ewan, who finished second, before previewing stage 3 and a crucial day that could see Bevin's team stretched to their limit. We have an actual race on our hands. Sponsor message Born in the Italian Dolomites, Sportful has been making athletes faster, more efficient and better protected since 1972. We talk to Porte about the hunt for success at the Tour, mental as well as physical pressure, and how he has settled with his new teammates ahead of the Tour Down Under. Impey, who denied Porte the 2018 Tour Down Under title, returns to lead the line at Mitchelton Scott and talks tactics over a race that will be decided by seconds.
