Large areas of the Earth will be too hot for humans if we hit 2 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels, according to new study

Large areas of the planet may become too hot to be habitable during extreme heat events. Researchers say that even healthy young humans would struggle to maintain a safe body temperature if we hit 2 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels in a new study that examines a 'worst-case' scenario. An international group of scientists has found that an area the size of the United States would become too hot during extreme heat events for even healthy young humans. And for older people who are more vulnerable to heat, the news is even worse. "So, with just two degrees Celsius warming, what we showed that even for young, healthy adults, an area about the landmass of the U.S. would actually become uninhabitable from a heat stress point of view. But when we extend that to elderly individuals who have a lower thermoregulatory capacity to control their body temperature, that extended to over a third of the landmass with just two degrees Celsius of warming. So, this is some quite alarming data really," explains Josh Foster, co-author of the study and a lecturer in human environmental physiology at King's College London. An estimated 260,000 people have died as a result of heat events since 2000, according to the researchers. But some parts of the world are more vulnerable than others. "These types of issues aren't necessarily centered on their own quite specific areas because there are some areas like Bangladesh and Pakistan that are much more vulnerable to high levels of humid heat. But then we also have to focus on drier climates, so the Sahara, some parts of Western Europe which are more prone to extreme levels of dry heating," says Foster. Between 1994-2023, only two percent of land reached a point where the combination of temperature and humidity was too high for adults under 60 to physically cope. The figure rose to more than 20 percent of land for those over 60. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Sergei Egorov grew up in a small city of only 100,000 citizens (which is huge compared to some cities). He grew up in Siberia, in the cold part of the country. His personal record for how cold it was during his time there was -53 Degrees Celsius. And a funny story, on that same day, he had to go to the post office to pay his internet bill.. so he could play video games at 16 years old. His favorite game at the time was Might and Magic, which was also 50% of Russia's favorite game as well. The cold weather was partially the reason he got into tech... cause he could do it at home indoors. Other than that, he was a regular kid, who liked to skateboard, and play guitar in his band.Through a chance discovery in Docker's eco-system, Sergei discovered an open source test container library, and realized that they approach he was taking to test containers was out there in the wild. He was invited to be a co-maintainer to the open source library, which would eventually become their current Company today. This is the creation story of AtomicJar.SponsorsCourierImg.lyRoutableCTO.aiCloudways offers peace of mind and flexibility so you can focus on growing your business instead of dealing with server management. Todd: Hey, Meg. We are talking about traveling and visiting other countries. What countries have you traveled to?Meg: I've been to quite a few different countries, for example, Spain, Belize and Indonesia.Todd: Wow, three different continents.Meg: Yeah, pretty far apart.Todd: Wow, that's cool. So Spain, that must be a really nice country. What did you think of Spain?Meg: Spain is really beautiful. There's a lot of beautiful nature and also some nice cities. While I was there, I lived in a small city called Caceres.Todd: Oh nice. Are the people really friendly in Spain?Meg: Yes. Actually, the people are very friendly and very helpful, especially if you're lost.Todd: Oh, that's great. I hear Spanish food is really, really good.Meg: Spanish food is delicious. I lived with a Spanish family and my Spanish mom cooked delicious meals every day for lunch. In Spain, seafood is really popular, so I ate a lot of fish and shrimp.Todd: Oh, I love fish and shrimp.Meg: Me too.Todd: Now, Spain is really warm, right?Meg: Yes. Spain was very hot while I was there during the summer.Todd: Oh yeah? How hot? How hot does it get?Meg: It got up past 40 Degrees Celsius during the summer.Todd: Wow.Meg: Yeah. It was pretty hot.Todd: Does it rain?Meg: It does rain. But when I was there in the summer, it didn't rain very often.Todd: So what about Belize? Belize is a really small country.Meg: Belize is very small, but it's also hot similar to Spain in the summer.Todd: Why did you go to Belize?Meg: I went to Belize on a study trip for school, and I stayed there for about two weeks.Todd: Okay. Now, does Belize have good food?Meg: Belize also has good food. There was a family that cooked for us, and we had a lot of delicious almost Mexican type food.Todd: Oh really? So for example, what do you eat? Like, what do people eat in Belize?Meg: People eat – it's kind of like a taco but flat with a tortilla, and some meat and vegetables on top and some spices that make it really delicious.Todd: So the last country is Indonesia. When did you go to Indonesia?Meg: I actually went to Indonesia just last year.Todd: Oh wow. How long did you stay?Meg: I only stayed there for about a week.Todd: Oh yeah? Oh, short trip.Meg: Yeah, it was a short trip, but I was just visiting some friends there.Todd: Where did you go?Meg: I went to Jakarta and Bali.Todd: Oh, okay. So I hear Bali has really beautiful beaches. Is it true?Meg: Yeah, it's true. There are a lot of famous and beautiful beaches in Bali.Todd: Oh, did you surf in Bali?Meg: I've never surfed before. Usually, when I went to the beach, I just wanted to put my feet in the water.Todd: Oh yeah. Now, Bali also has very famous scenery on the inside like the rice fields. Did you see the rice fields of Bali?Meg: No, I didn't see the rice fields. But I did go to some famous historical spots.Todd: So of the three countries – Spain, Belize and Indonesia – what country was your favorite?Meg: Maybe Spain was my favorite because I love learning language, and it was really nice to stay with my Spanish family.Todd: Yeah. I could see that. I really want to go to Spain, and I hope to go soonMeg: I hope you can go too. It's beautiful.

Alexandra Ashcroft asked Dr Thomas Ouldridge, from Imperial College London, to hang Norm's question out to dry... Like this podcast? Please help us by supporting the Naked Scientists

How to melt coax ...

Foundations of Amateur Radio Recently I made a comment about melting your coax and that this was a bad thing. Today I'm going to talk about some of how this comes about and what kinds of parameters we're dealing with. Let's start with coax itself. The operating temperature of coax is somewhere around 80 to 90 Degrees Celsius, or 176 to 194 Fahrenheit. Soldering is at 230 Celsius, or 446 Fahrenheit, so for starters, soldering coax is a risky adventure. For argument's sake, let's assume that you managed to solder your coax without damaging it. What else can go wrong? Let's have a look at high voltage transmission lines. Why do we move power around the place using high voltage lines? The answer is that in a high voltage line, the current is low. Where the current is low, heating is low, so more of the energy gets from the power-station to your shack and less of it is used to heat up the power line between the power station and you. So, that means that high voltage and low current is less heat loss. The opposite is also true. Low voltage and high current is more heat loss. Now if you look at a dipole antenna, you'll know that this contraption is moving energy around at some or other frequency. As it's doing that, there are high and low voltage points and high and low current points. In a half-wave dipole, the high voltage points are at the ends of the antenna, and the high current points are at the feed-point. Guess where your coax is? So, you've got your connection to your antenna located at a high current point, in the place where high current has the potential to create problems, things like heating up your coax and potentially melting it. So, when does this heating happen? Well, you need high resistance and high current. This typically happens when you've got a bad connector at the feed-point. In practical terms this means that if you're using QRP, 5 Watts, you're unlikely to come across a situation where this becomes an issue, since the currents aren't that high and a bad connection typically means no contacts. If on the other hand you're using high power, then make sure that the connection to your antenna is strong, solid, and water proof so it doesn't deteriorate to the point of melting and then killing your radio. It's best to keep an eye on the SWR meter when you're working, since a high SWR might be indicating that the resistance at your antenna changed for the worse. Final comment. When you've set-up your station, create a note of the SWR at different frequencies and refer back to that regularly. Spotting a problem early might just prevent some expensive maintenance later on. dattrax: Summer is here in Toronto- the sun is shining and the temperature is at a usual beautiful 27 Degrees Celsius and higher- consistently now. Just in time for a summertime all vocal house mix! Usually like to do one of these back to back vocal mixes per year. We usually have a personal DJing rule of never mixing a vocal into a vocal, but we shelve that once per year. Think the last summer mix was "MAINSTAY" (scroll down to find it). Hands in the air and your head bopping as you drive to this... my favourite testing ground for a new mix is nice & LOUD in the car. Drive safely though... Been trying to find time to lay these new tracks my DJ Partner Jim and I bought over two months ago, but work has been crazy and I'm still behind some deadlines, and I don't let house music interrupt my family time with my wife and children (as much as I love it). I wish I had a soundproof room though because every time I had time, it was at 11pm or later. That's life... There's a few tracks on this mix that are almost classic house now because tons of good Toronto House DJs have been playing them since Jan & putting them in their mixes also. Good thing that great house is timeless and if someone hasn't heard it before, then it's NEW to them. In this mix: many many tracks from Toronto's Finest Deep House Producer right now, JASON B. (in my opinion. I think 5 tracks- time for a 60min Jason B. Tribute Mix soon. It's gonna be called "TORONTO DEEP" so I got dibs on this mix name Everyone!) The first track is Jason's treatment of SADE's Morning Bird and it's exquisite. Can't get enough of his tracks. A good house track for me is when you can listen over and over and still get a grin on your face and this refreshing feeling flow over you. Last track is by Toronto's Nick Holder and it's one of three vocal tracks on this mix called "Heartbeat", so the name of this mix was obvious. Don't think we ever bought three house songs with the same name before- weird. We have many of Nick's vinyl records, but this is his finest remix- PERIOD- gonna blow your mind!! I first heard it on Roland Gonzalez' mix in feb2011 and freaked out! Nick is representing Toronto in South Africa right now- much respect to one of the most successful House Producers Canada has ever produced- a pioneer in this scene. A scene that we all have grown to love more and more. I've been told that SA is the center of the House Nation right now, I don't disagree with this with so much great production coming out of SA recently for deep house, but I'm biased and think Toronto is where it's at for house music in general. Don't believe me? Blowing hot air? Then check out over 300 Toronto House DJ Mixes here in our facecrack group by over 100 Toronto House DJs (every genre of house): http://budurl.com/TORONTOHOUSEDJMIXES FEAST YOUR EARS ENDLESSLY!! ***and this group was only started at the end of Jan of this year- 2011. A good mix is one where someone can listen over and over and still keep smiling and not get bored. We hope that is how you feel about our mixes. All tracks bought from www.Beatport.com and www.Traxsource.com If there is any track you particularly like and want to go buy for yourself, then let us know and we'll get the name for you and which site we bought it from. Same with any previous mix. We bought a total of 150tracks in last two months, and Jim just bought another 40+ and I haven't listened to them yet!! That's enough music for another 5 new mixes!!
