In the early 1960s, R.J. Reynolds, one of the largest and most profitable tobacco companies in the U.S. at the time, wanted to diversify its business. Its marketing strategies had been highly successful in selling its top brands, like Camel, Winston and Salem cigarettes, and executives thought, Why not apply the same strategies to, say, the food industry? So in 1963, R.J. Reynolds acquired Hawaiian Punch. It marked the beginning of the tobacco industry's entry into the food sector. In the following decades, R.J. Reynolds and Philip Morris expanded aggressively into the food industry, acquiring major brands, like Del Monte, Nabisco, General Foods, Kraft and 7UP, where they produced hyperpalatable, chemically-engineered foods now known as ultra-processed foods, or UPFs. These products were marketed especially to children and other vulnerable groups. In Berkeley Talks episode 229, Laura Schmidt, a professor of health policy in the School of Medicine at UC San Francisco, discusses how ultra-processed foods — like cookies, sodas, instant noodles, fish sticks and cereals — are a direct legacy of the tobacco industry, and are responsible for a dramatic rise in obesity, diabetes and other chronic diseases across the country. “About 60% of the calories in Americans' diets are from ultra-processed foods,” says Schmidt, who spoke at a UC Berkeley event in May. “In the mid-'80s, when we see ultra-processed foods starting to scale up in the American food supply, we also see obesity starting to really rise. That is the moment when some of the largest food companies are owned by tobacco companies.”This talk took place on May 5, 2025, and was co-sponsored by the Berkeley Food Institute (BFI) and Berkeley Public Health. It was moderated by Isabel Madzorera, an assistant professor in food, nutrition and population health at Berkeley Public Health and co-faculty director at the Berkeley Food Institute.Watch a video of the event on the Berkeley Food Institute's YouTube page.Listen to the episode and read the transcript on UC Berkeley News (news.berkeley.edu/podcasts).Music by HoliznaCC0.Photo by Cory Doctorow via Wikimedia Commons. Historian and ethicist Nigel Cameron discusses his article, "C. Everett Koop's fearless fight against the tobacco industry," drawn from his biography of the former U.S. surgeon general. He recounts how C. Everett Koop, initially facing ridicule and expected to be ineffective, strategically used the 1982 Surgeon General's report on smoking to dramatically reshape his public image and intensify the fight against Big Tobacco. Nigel details the pivotal press conference where Koop forcefully presented the report's findings, overshadowing his superiors, declaring smoking "society's chief cause of preventable death," and refuting industry claims. This event marked a turning point, transforming Koop's relationship with the press, establishing his "bully pulpit," and escalating what Koop viewed as an "all-out war" against the tobacco industry's "sleaze," fundamentally altering the government's stance on smoking. Mexican drug cartels have increasingly turned to the tobacco industry as a new revenue stream amidst crackdowns on traditional narcotics. One prominent player, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), has been implicated in forcing cigarette vendors in several Mexican states to sell only specific brands, often under threat of violence. This operation, often referred to as the "Tobacco Cartel," employs tactics such as posing as government officials to confiscate non-approved brands and intimidate vendors. The shift to the tobacco market is partly driven by declining revenues from traditional drug markets. Legalization of marijuana in several regions, increased law enforcement pressure on heroin distribution, and the rise of synthetic drugs like fentanyl have squeezed profits from older drug trades, pushing cartels to diversify into areas like tobacco. Moreover, local production of illegal cigarettes is a new phenomenon in Mexico, with cartels collaborating with local tobacco growers to meet demand, thereby reducing reliance on international smuggling networks. In this episode, we take a trip south of the border to see how the Cartels are making their move into this market and why it matters to you.(commercial at 7:43)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:From drug trafficking to tobacco: Cigarettes become a new branch of business for Mexican cartels | International | EL PAÍS English (elpais.com)

We're not known for blowing smoke on Mad Men Men, but I guess we can make an exception for this penultimate episode of the season! That's right, we're back to discuss Season 4, Episode 12, titled "Blowing Smoke." Which finds the old gang at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce scrambling in the fog of losing Lucky Strike. As usual, we recap the episode, give our analysis, and reference the director/writer/actors' commentaries as well as Mad Men Carousel by Matt Zoller Seitz. In case this is your first time digging into our podcast, we recap Mad Men from the perspective of a first-time watcher, someone who only watched the show once while it was airing, and a superfan who watches excessively instead of having a functional social life. “Blowing Smoke” Discussion Points: What can we make of the dynamic between Sally and Glen in this episode? How can we connect Don's American Cancer pitch to the "kids" in "Blowing Smoke"? Does this really feel like a penultimate episode? Is the Midge subplot all that believable? What is the current state of Don and Faye's relationship? Extra credits: Matthew Weiner created Mad Men, which aired on AMC from 2007 to 2015. John Slattery directed “Blowing Smoke” and Andre Jacquemetton and Maria Jacquemetton wrote the script. The show stars Jon Hamm, January Jones, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, Christina Hendricks, John Slattery, Robert Morse, and many more. Our intro music is “Mad Men Men” by Tom Davidson, which is an original remix of the show's opening theme “A Beautiful Mine” by RJD2. Podcast illustration is by Jon Negroni. An RNZ investigation has highlighted similarities between notes the associate health minister's office sent to officials, and strategies and arguments used by the tobacco industry. The notes repeated the new government's plans to repeal recent smokefree laws, which would have slashed the number of tobacco retailers to just 600 outlets, cut the amount of nicotine in cigarettes, and made it illegal to sell tobacco to anyone born in 2009 or later. The notes contained a range of alternative proposals, including freezing tobacco excise tax and giving new-generation tobacco and nicotine products special tax treatment. The minister, Casey Costello, has denied writing the notes and refused to say who did, saying they were collated from a range of sources. RNZ data and features journalist Kate Newton has been looking at the notes. Newton spoke to Corin Dann.
The world-first law that would have created a smokefree generation in Aotearoa New Zealand was repealed under urgency by the coalition government on Wednesday.

A Times investigation has found that tobacco companies have been engaged in a secret lobbying campaign to try and boost their e cigarette sales. They've bankrolled scientific papers playing down the risks of youth vaping and funded so-called independent foundations, which then try and lobby the government. Tobacco use is the world's leading cause of preventable death.Since the mid-20th century, the tobacco industry has used deliberate marketing tactics to confuse the public about tobacco's harmful effects, causing billions of deaths globally from tobacco use and second-hand smoke. However, a growing number of countries and organizations around the world are standing up to the tobacco industry and taking strong action.Since its launch in 1995, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids has tackled the tobacco industry head on. And since the launch of the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use in 2007, the arch of the fight against tobacco has changed drastically – in turn, saving millions of lives. Despite this progress, the data shows that there's still a lot of work to be done. While cigarette use declined exceptionally over the years, the tobacco industry has found ways to reinvent itself through social media ad campaigns and colorful, fun-flavored e-cigarettes tailor made for kids.On this episode, our host Katherine Oliver, sits down with Matt Myers, outgoing President of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and Yolonda Richardson, the Campaign's current President, to share more about the arduous battle against the ever-evolving tobacco industry and its deceptive marketing to kids and low-income communities around the world.
