In this episode 11 of Season Three of the Nursing Strategies for Success Podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jeanette Zocco MSN, RNC-OB, C-EFM, C-ONQS, who is leveraging her decades of experience to transform Nursing teams and workplace culture through advocacy and empowerment of other Nurses. She has recently authored a book with a two-fold intention: 1. To educate perinatal nurses on quality and safety concepts and various quality improvement tools to bring evidence-based care to the bedside and create safer systems of care (which I personally think can be utilized by all specialties).2. To serve as a study guide for nurses interested in sitting for the Obstetric and Neonatal Quality and Safety Certification exam (developed by the National Certification Corporation). Key concepts discussed include: strategies to advocate for patient safety, human factors and cognitive biases as contributing factors to medical errors and sentinel events, and how teamwork and quality improvement can help. (Again - I think all specialties can benefit from this book despite the desire or lack thereof with obtaining ONQS certification.) YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS THIS EPISODE!

Birth can be many things: incredible, traumatic, beautiful, scary, empowering or all of them. Birth and postpartum nurse Lo Mansfield will talk about bringing intuition, grace and evidence into the birth experience. In this episode, we chat about: Why nursing, specifically why labor and delivery? On your social media channels you talk about balancing intuition, grace + evidence. What do you mean by that? You sometimes mention the loss of your own mom while you were pregnant. Many of our NICU parents listening are experiencing grief as they mourn the loss of a "normal" delivery or baby. How did/do you work through that grief? What's the best way to communicate to your doctor and L&D nurses your desires for your baby's birth? If you are designated as high-risk prior to delivery, what are things that may change your delivery? Some moms may feel distant from their NICU baby due to separation at birth, is that normal? If so, what are your suggestions for working through that? What's the best thing a laboring mom can do to ensure the best possible birth outcome for her baby? What's your best advice to a laboring mom? Lo Mansfield MSN, RNC-OB, is a specialty-certified registered nurse in obstetrics, postpartum, and fetal monitoring who is passionate about families understanding their integral role in their own stories. She is tired of you being told what to do or what is “best” - and instead believes you should get all the information and then be supported and cheered for as you make up your own mind. Today we have a really fun and interesting educational podcast. It's all about building your birth team from your care provider, to your birth partner, to other support people you might have like a doula and childbirth educator. Building your birth team is an aspect of birth you have some control over, so it's important to do your research, ask the right questions, and make sure you feel truly comfortable around and supported by all members of your team. So what should you be looking for in your team? What should you be taking them? And what red flags should you be aware of? To have this conversation on today's episode of Yoga| Birth| Babies, I invited Sarah Lavonne, founder of Bundle Birth to join me. It was a delight to talk to her! I smiled from ear to ear the whole time we chatted. She is so knowledgeable and offers information in such an easy to understand digestible way. You're going to walk away from this episode with notes, enthusiasm, and excitement to talk to your birth team and organize the people that will be supporting you. Get ready to pause the episode and take notes as Sarah offers wonderfully phrased questions that you'll be able to take into your appointments and interviews. This week's guest Janine Kelbach, RNC-OB, is the founder of Savvy Nurse Writer, a company that shows nurses how to create their own freelancing writing businesses. Janine has an extensive history working as a nurse in several roles--but mentions that something was always missing. This missing piece ended up being the freedom and flexibility to control her schedule to be a better mother and nurse. Once Janine had her second child she turned a new leaf, and started a new journey where she could have more control over her schedule. When Janine was offered a position in home care she quickly realized that she liked working on her own! However this position took a frightening turn and Janine ended up resigning. After her resignation, Janine took to Google where she learned about becoming a freelance writer! With a focus on providing education-based research, Janine's business aims to help their clients rank on popular search engines. She also shows nurses how to start their own freelance content creation businesses. Dr Abby Dennis, OB-GYN, Ray Rachlin, CPM of Refuge Midwifery, & Maggie Runyon, RNC-OB come together to explore the realities of transferring from a planned homebirth to the hosital.Hospital transfers are at times a necessary and expected part of thriving homebirth care models. Recognizing this and the unpredictability of birth that will sometimes necessitate a change in plans can prepare us to view a homebirth transfer as a variation of normal rather than a fraught situation to be avoided at all costs. Our biases around homebirth transfers to hospital are often reinforced by negative experiences. Many hospital-based birth professionals are only familiar with homebirth in the context of when things go awry and a transfer is needed, which reinforces a belief that homebirth is unsafe and needlessly risky. Similarly, when community midwives & birthworkers do not have relationships with hospital-based providers outside of the transfer environment there is limited time to establish shared beliefs.Join Abby, Ray, & Maggie this week as we explore:~When & how to transfer to preserve vaginal birth~Routine vs emergent transfers~Adversarial relationships between homebirth & hospital providers~System challenges in the US that preclude collaborative relationships~Establishing mutual trust & respect to avoid care delays~Promoting physical, mental, & emotional safety during a transferSupport the show (https://www.paypal.me/yourbirthpartners)

There may be nothing that creates a stronger divide between birth professionals and the people they serve than the fear of liability.Particularly in the hospital setting, the fear of liability looms large and impacts the way we provide care: from the policies we create, to the technology we use, and the way we speak to patients.Special guest Irnise Williams, JD, RN joins Dr Abby Dennis, MD & Maggie Runyon, RNC-OB to dig into this multi-layered issue:How do we move past that fear? What best practices help us to document our care clearly for all involved? What special considerations are at play when caring for underserved populations?Support the show (https://www.paypal.me/yourbirthpartners)
