Telly acknowledges his parents' initial concerns about his career choice but explains that they eventually came to support him, proud of his achievements over the years. He reflects on the immigrant experience and the formation of supportive communities like Chinatowns, drawing parallels with the inclusive nature of the theatre community. Andy and Telly discuss the impact of cultural background on career choices, the challenges faced in pursuing non-traditional paths, and the value of perseverance in achieving personal and professional success. They also examine the importance of relationships in Telly's career and the impact of directors on his growth as an artist. Telly highlights how every opportunity he's had in the industry has come from building relationships on previous projects. He emphasises the value of personal connections in every industry. Telly also shares his approach to directing, highlighting the importance of understanding and respecting the different roles and perspectives within a production team and the collaborative nature of theatre, where each person's contribution is essential to creating a successful show. Andy and Telly conclude with the upcoming show in London at Crazy Coq, where Telly will be performing with a jazz trio on 28th April, 2024. In this special crossover episode, host Luisa Lyons chats with Ebony Vines and Pamela Shandrow of the Theatre Geeks Anonymous podcast. Join us as we nerd out about musical theatre and take a look at three short-running Broadway musicals that were all filmed live: At the Drop of a Hat (1962) starring British comedy duo Flanders and Swann, Show Girl (1961) starring Carol Channing, and Allegiance (2017) starring George Takei, Telly Leung, and Lea Salonga.Guest BiosEbony Vines is a writer, director, producer and the co-host of Theatre Geeks Anonymous. Ebony's love of musical theatre was passed down from her late Mother who loved to watch musical movies with her daughter while grading her students' homework. After a long conversation with her friend Pamela about growing up a theater geek, obsessively listening to cast recordings and also loving true crime, they created the podcast Theatre Geeks Anonymous. At a very young age, Pamela Shandrow knew she wanted to be an actress. It was at 10 years old, when she watched the PBS version of Into The Woods with Bernadette Peters, that she decided her future would be in musical theatre! Since then she's performed in numerable regional shows, but is most proud of her work in the Broadway National Tours of Phantom of the Opera, and Wicked, as ensemble/Carlotta US and ensemble/Madame Morrible US respectively.Show LinksTheatre Geeks Anonymous At the Drop of a Hat Show Girl AllegianceSupport the showFilmed Live Musicals is where musicals come home. There are certain people that are just born to be on stage. Telly Leung is one of them. Hilary met Telly almost two decades ago when they did The King and I with Lou Diamond Phillips as the lead. Since then, "leading man" is something Telly is quite familiar with and it's a perfect fit.  From Aladdin on Broadway to other notable roles that include the Broadway revival and national tour of Rent, Godspell, Allegiance and In Transit...he's done it all.  And if you're a fan of the TV show Glee, it's hard to think of The Warblers without Wes.  But what Telly has learned during his devotion to the performing arts is that it comes with a responsibility. Especially when you're the star.   On this episode and in honor of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, HIListically Speaking, Telly opens up about placing race and diversity center stage. The importance of mental health and sharing your story.  And why taking a giant leap into new territory as a director is crucial for conscious conversations to exist; not only for the arts, but for mind, body and spirit as well.  Plus, Telly goes public for the first time about about an experiment that nurtured his mental and physical health. Something he's only shared with close family and friends...until now.   The curtain is rising and you are front row and center. Enjoy the conversation with the incredibly talented leading man, Telly Leung.  To connect and stay up to date on Telly, check out his website tellyleung.com and follow him on social @tellyleung.  The book Telly was reading, The Alcohol Experiment by Annie Grace.  If you enjoyed this conversation, Subscribe to HIListically Speaking and leave a rating and review wherever your headphones take you. Telly and Cameron discuss the inspiration behind the documentary Ensemble, the catharsis of filming it, and the resilience of the 13 very diverse people in different stages of their life and career who are featured on screen. They share thoughts on George Takei's legacy as an artist, activist and producer, and how his career encouraged and cleared a path for so many after him. Telly and Cameron express their support of “call out culture” in order to take time for yourself physically and mentally, and reflect on the old adage “the show must go on”. They also open up about what they hope people walk away with after watching their new documentary, Ensemble which dropped on March 11th on Broadway On Demand. Telly, as the producer, and Cameron, as a featured performer, are part of this brand new documentary, which gives an inside look at the private lives of Broadway ensemble members a year after Broadway shut down.  Telly Leung made his Broadway debut in the 2002 revival of Flower Drum Song, and was named one of 12 Faces to Watch in 2012: Dance, Theater, Architecture, and Art by the Los Angeles Times. Carefully Taught: Teaching Musical Theatre with Matty and Kikau

Broadway's Aaron J. Albano (Newsies, Hamilton...) comes on to talk about a NEW film he produced (and is featured in) that comes out TODAY called ensemble. Aaron and I go WAY back...like way way back and Matty and Aaron are both alums from University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, OH. Here is some Information about the movie: On the one year anniversary of the longest shutdown in Broadway history, a multigenerational group of Broadway ensemble members come together to both dance and reflect on the year that was and what the world's largest stage can learn from this Intermission to come back for a stronger and more equitable Act 2. This behind-the-scenes look captures cast members from the biggest hits on Broadway as they come out of isolation to examine their love of performing and how they can be the change they want to see in the world and in the industry they love. Telly just returned from Godspell at The University of Michigan and Dan and Joe are ready to go back to college so they can be directed by Telly. This is such a joy of a conversation. We talk about why representation matters, the reckoning in our business, creating art, waiting overnight in line for 20$ tickets, and how the greatest buzz for Telly comes from teaching the next generation. We love this man. We love you. Happy Friday. Telly was born and raised in New York City. He grew up in a traditional Chinese home in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. After graduating from Stuyvesant High School he attended Carnegie Mellon University.. Not a big deal :) It was also at CMU that Telly met fellow CMU-alum and KINKY BOOTS Tony-Award Winner, Billy Porter, who returned to his alma mater to direct the main stage production of Sondheim's COMPANY. After casting Telly as Bobby in "Company", Porter made a phone call to his colleagues who were involved in the upcoming Broadway revival of FLOWER DRUM SONG which eventually landed Telly the understudy for Wang Ta.  After playing Bobby in Sondheim's COMPANY in college, Telly would later get the opportunity to work with the legendary Stephen Sondheim in Roundabout's Broadway revival of PACIFIC OVERTURES in 2005. After PACIFIC OVERTURES, Telly originated the role of Boq in the Chicago company of WICKED, collaborating with fellow CMU-alum, Stephen Schwartz. Other Broadway credits include the final company of RENT - where he also got to make his film debut in Radical Media / Sony's RENT: FILMED LIVE ON BROADWAY, which is available on DVD and Blue Ray. After RENT ended its Broadway run, Telly went on an international tour with original RENT stars Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp in RENT: THE BROADWAY TOUR. He would later reprise the role of Angel in RENT at the Hollywood Bowl, directed by Neil Patrick Harris and starring Vanessa Hudgens, Aaron Tveit, Skylar Astin, & Wayne Brady. In 2011, Telly would get another opportunity to collaborate with composer Stephen Schwartz in the Broadway revival of GODSPELL at the Circle in the Square Theater.  Telly was involved in the development of Broadway's ALLEGIANCE, creating the role of "Sammy" alongside Lea Salonga (MISS SAIGON) and George Takei (STAR TREK). ALLEGIANCE is the story of one Japanese-American family's struggles and triumphs during the Japanese Internment of World War II. The musical made its sold-out world premiere at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego in 2012 and premiered on Broadway in the Fall of 2015. In 2016, Telly starred opposite Justin Guarini (American Idol) in IN TRANSIT, Broadway's first a cappella musical with music by Oscar-winner Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Russell Kaplan, Sara Wordsworth and James-Allen Ford, with direction and choreography by Tony-Award Winner Kathleen Marshall.  In June 2017, Telly Leung began his star turn as the title character in Disney’s ALADDIN on Broadway. He would continue to play the role for two years, and his caricature would eventually earn a coveted spot on the wall’s of New York’s historic Sardi’s restaurant. Telly has appeared on television in GLEE (as Wes of the Dalton Academy Warblers), INSTINCT (CBS), ODD MOM OUT (Bravo), DEADBEAT (on Hulu), LAW AND ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT and played Kevin in the pilot of ABC's performing arts drama, LIMELIGHT. He was also heavily featured in the PBS documentary BROADWAY OR BUST as a teacher and performance coach for the Jimmy Awards. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep118 - Gen Parton-Shin: Bridging the Gap Between Japan and Broadway

The Theatre Podcast with Alan Seales

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 23, 2020 41:23

When he’s not pursuing his dreams onstage, this performer spends his spare time translating musicals like Hamilton from English to Japanese, on a mission to bridge the gap between Japanese and American musical theater audiences. Gen Parton-Shin is a Japanese-British actor who made his professional debut as Angel in the Official Japanese cast of Rent in 2008. While pursuing his dreams in the US, he furthered his career with leading roles in Japan's official Broadway productions of next to normal (Gabe), Dracula (Jonathan), Bare (Jason), and Rocky Horror Show (Rocky). Gen also played the lead role in an original Japanese musical Mitsuko ~Love Crosses All Borders~ in 2010, composed by Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll and Hyde, The Civil War). He has been a part of numerous musical/play readings in NYC, including Other World (directed by Gabriel Barr and written by Hunter Bell and Jeff Bowen of Title of Show), off-Broadway’s K-pop, and Mafatu (produced by Broadway veteran Telly Leung). He co-founded a company called Broadway in Japan, which introduced Broadway musical theatre faculty to Japanese aspiring musical theatre performers, offering invaluable education opportunities in Japan. Gen has also appeared on TV, including roles on Season 4 of Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and The Other Two on Comedy Central. In addition, Gen has self-produced three solo cabaret shows, and in the latest one he translated and performed “My Shot” from Hamilton in Japanese. During our conversation, Gen describes his musical theater journey which has taken him from the stages of Japan, to those of New York. He shares that while performing in Japan, he wasn’t always satisfied with the translations they were given to work with; thus sparking his drive and desire to see if he could do the job himself. Gen has now translated about three fifths of Hamitlon into Japanese, comparing the process to completing a puzzle which he really enjoys.  He also shares that one of his life missions is “to bridge Japan and the U.S.”, which he has begun to do with his foray into translation, hoping to make American musical theater easier for Japanese audiences to listen to and process. In this episode, we talk about:  Why he identifies as a Third Culture Kid  Completing the One-Year Conservatory program at T. Schreiber Studio on a tourist visa How he was inspired to start translating musicals into Japanese  The intricacies of translating English to Japanese  Why he thinks musical theater is so popular in Japan  Takarazuka Revue - the all female musical theater troupe in Japan Connect with Gen and watch two of his Hamilton translations: Watch Hamilton's "My Shot" Watch Hamilton's "Helpless" Check out 35mm, A Musical Exhibition IG: @GenPartonShin Twitter: @GenPartonShin Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Recently, Jackson Cline of The Ensemblist has been asking several questions about queer representation in musical theatre. How has the portrayal and inclusion of queer characters evolved over the years? Are more queer artists getting opportunities to tell these stories, both onstage and behind the scenes? And does giving queer-identifying individuals opportunities to create queer roles create a richer theatrical experience for the audience? Over the course of this mini-series, we’ll dive into these questions and hear from some of the talented artists who have put their stamps on Queer Characters on Broadway.  Today, we’re going to take a journey through time, looking at the evolution of queer stories told in Broadway musicals. In this episode, I sit down with the amazing Telly Leung (Broadway: In Transit, Allegiance, Godspell, Rent, Flower Drum Song, Pacific Overtures, TV: Warbler Wes on Glee) at his apartment in New York City to talk about his journey to Broadway and beyond. We also discuss learning to be present and content in the moment with what you have despite whatever success does or doesn't come, prioritizing life and relationships in tandem with career, diversity in storytelling, stories of color, stories of minorities, telling human stories that are both specific and universal and the importance of rising up as artists to serve the greater purpose of being a voice of compassion and empathy for the world to see, hear and feel.
