What's up, dudes? Alvin, Simon…Theodore! Yes, it's the Dave Seville (Ross Bagdasarian) musical rodent creation! Jeff Loftin from Lost Christmas and Jeremy Phelps the Alamo City Santa are with me to dig into the 1981 special “A Chipmunk Christmas!” Swept up in the Christmas spirit, Alvin gives away his cherished harmonica to a sick little boy. Meanwhile, Dave has booked Alvin to perform a harmonica solo at Carnegie Hall. Alvin keeps the loss of his harmonica a secret from Dave, and with the help of Simon and Theodore, he scrambles to earn enough money to buy another harmonica in time for his Carnegie Hall debut. Unfortunately, Dave mistakes his entrepreneurial endeavors for greed. Don't worry, though: Mrs. Claus buys Alvin the harmonica and the concert goes on as scheduled, with Dave discovering his true motivations.Along the way you'll hear the Chipmunks getting ready for the big night, singing their own comical versions of holiday favorites like "Jingle Bells," "Deck the Halls", and their famous "Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)". This heartwarming story, brimming with joyful music, makes "A Chipmunk Christmas" a great way to celebrate the holidays. Oh, and there was a soundtrack album released as well. The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics
In this episode of The Brainy Business podcast, you'll join host Melina Palmer as she dives into the fascinating topic of the planning fallacy. Melina shares her personal experiences with underestimating the time it takes to complete tasks and projects, revealing that even she, an expert in the field, is not immune to this cognitive bias. But fear not, because Melina also provides valuable strategies to combat the planning fallacy and improve your planning accuracy. From seeking external perspectives to breaking tasks into smaller steps, she offers practical advice that you can implement in your own life. Whether you struggle with accurately estimating time or simply want to enhance your productivity, this episode is a must-listen. So get ready to tackle the planning fallacy head-on and start maximizing your time and efficiency. In this episode: Maximize productivity by understanding the planning fallacy and its impact on time estimation. Learn effective strategies to combat the planning fallacy and accurately estimate project timelines. Improve planning accuracy and avoid delays caused by underestimating the time needed for tasks. Unpack complex projects into manageable tasks for more accurate time allocation. Overcome the challenges of planning fallacy when dealing with large-scale projects. Show Notes: 00:00:00 - Introduction, Melina introduces the concept of planning fallacy and explains how it affects our ability to estimate the time and effort required for tasks. She also mentions her upcoming conversation with Nick Sonnenberg and how his book, Come Up for Air, inspired her to refresh this episode. 00:02:16 - The Foundations of Planning Fallacy Melina discusses how planning fallacy was first introduced by Kahneman and Tversky in 1979. They found that errors in judgment were systematic and not random, indicating a bias in the brain. Planning fallacy affects all kinds of people, even experts, and it can be difficult to overcome. 00:05:05 - Why We Fall Victim to Planning Fallacy Melina explains that the brain is naturally inclined to focus on success and underestimate the possibility of failure. We tend to believe that things will go smoothly and that we can do it all, leading to unrealistic expectations and missed deadlines. Even having deadlines and incentives doesn't necessarily help. 00:08:54 - Biases Contributing to Planning Fallacy Melina discusses several biases and brain tricks that contribute to planning fallacy, including the focusing illusion and fundamental attribution error. The focusing illusion causes us to allocate different amounts of time based on what we're currently focused on, while fundamental attribution error leads us to attribute external or internal factors incorrectly. 00:15:57 - The Myth of 8 Hours of Writing Writing for 8 hours straight is not actually 8 hours of writing. Taking breaks and getting distracted reduces the actual writing time. A suggested technique is to write for 25 minutes and then take a 5-minute break, repeating this cycle. This helps to combat planning fallacy and increase productivity. 00:17:43 - The Impact of Distractions and Breaks Distractions and breaks, such as emails and unexpected projects, further decrease writing time. Considering these interruptions, a planned 8-hour writing day may result in only 4.5 hours of actual writing. This means that the anticipated 32 pages would be reduced to only 18. 00:19:47 - Planning for Worst Case Scenario To overcome planning fallacy, it is crucial to plan for the worst case scenario. By allocating a realistic amount of time for productive writing and acknowledging potential distractions, you can avoid beating yourself up over unmet expectations. Celebrate achieving your planned writing time. 00:21:51 - Urgent vs Important Tasks The urgent vs important grid helps prioritize tasks. Determine if a task is important, urgent, both, or neither. This framework helps in dismissing distractions by asking if they are truly important and urgent compared to the planned task. Planning for distractions helps stick to timelines and overcome planning fallacy. 00:31:48 - Understanding the Planning Fallacy Launching a podcast involves various tasks that may seem quick and easy on the surface. However, breaking them down into subtasks reveals the true complexity of the process. Properly allocating time and planning for each subtask can help reduce stress and ensure completion without overcommitting. 00:33:48 - The Power of Unpacking Unpacking tasks into their smallest subcomponents is essential for complex projects like launching a podcast. Simple tasks may not benefit as much from unpacking, but for larger projects, it helps in understanding the full scope and allocating sufficient time for each task. 00:34:27 - Overcoming Planning Fallacy Planning fallacy is a natural tendency that affects everyone. Being aware of this tendency and using the tips mentioned in the episode can help overcome it. Having a trusted friend or colleague to keep you in check is also crucial in avoiding overcommitment and excessive work. 00:35:11 - Personal Experience with Planning Fallacy Melina admits to constantly struggling with planning fallacy despite her knowledge of it. However, understanding its existence and finding ways to manage it can prevent continuous overcommitment and excessive work. 00:36:22 - Conclusion, Melina's top insights from the conversation. In an illustrious career which included the longest-running comedy in the history of the West End, a hit film with Peter Sellers and Goldie Hawn, one of ITV’s most successful sitcoms of the 1970s, another of ITV’s most successful sitcoms of the 1980s, awards and fortunes, made and lost, my father, Terence Frisby regarded Kisses on a Postcard as the best thing he ever wrote. I couldn’t agree more. It has everything.Kisses began in 1988 as a radio play, Just Remember Two Things: It’s Not Fair And Don’t Be Late, a series of reminiscences about Dad’s experiences as an evacuee during World War Two. BBC Radio broadcast the play ten times, creating some sort of record, and it received the biggest audience response that anyone in the BBC Radio Drama department could remember. It won the Giles Cooper Award for Best Radio Play and was mentioned critically in the same breath as Under Milk Wood and Cider With Rosie. It was then optioned to be a film, where it got stuck in development hell for fifteen years, and the film was never made. Dad’s close friend Jeremy James Taylor, founder of the National Youth Musical Theatre, meanwhile, had been nagging him to turn it into a stage musical and a chance encounter on a golf course in 2002 was the catalyst. I’ve had the theatre shoved down my throat since an early age, but against all expectation this tiny community theatre project at the Queen’s Theatre, Barnstaple, North Devon, with mostly amateur performers, and a little known Welsh actor by the name of Derek Crewe in the main role, was the best thing I ever saw in the theatre. I remember saying to Dad at the time, even if nothing more ever happens with this, you can go to your grave knowing that no one else has ever done that to a room. We tried for many years to raise the three million pounds we needed to bring it to the West End, but then ran into the global financial crisis. I remember giving a presentation one evening in Mayfair at a billionaire’s club. There were more than 20 billionaires in the room. It was 6th of October 2008, the day the Icelandic banks went down. It was hard to secure their interest. Then in 2010 Bloomsbury, commissioned a book, which, as is the case with everyone who runs into this story, was loved by all who read it. In 2013 there was another production in Barnstaple, but again the West End producers didn’t come. My father died in April, 2020. Kisses on a Postcard is too special to remain just a script and a CD on a shelf. I did not have the means to turn it into a film or a stage show, but I did have the means to turn it into an audiobook and that is what I have done. Dad would have been more ruthless with the script than I have and kept it to two hours. I have let it run much longer. With good reason. This story will disarm you in the most unexpected ways. You will find yourself laughing and weeping at just what wonderful things the kindest of human beings can be. I hope you enjoy it. And if you do, please tell your friends. Thank you. Who is the Most Lawless? International Law Expert Critiques all Countries Involved in the Ukraine Crisis & Suggests it did not Start with the Russian Invasion but with the 2014 Coup International law expert Alfredo de Zayas joins Bringing Light Into Darkness to discuss International Law and ongoing events and the context of those events connected to the Ukraine, NATO, US Russian invasion crisis. De Zayas is a law professor at the Geneva School of Diplomacy and served as a United Nations Independent Expert on International Order 2012-18. The United Nations Charter is described as the ‘world constitution' if you will and the violations thereof by world powers is discussed as well as the concepts of ‘preemptive self-defense' and ‘responsibility to protect' (R2P). Does a country have the right to attack another country and if so when does a country have that right under international law? An inalterable principle of the UN Charter is the prohibition, not only of the use of force but of the threat of the use of force. Our guest discusses its relevance in the context of the current Ukraine war crisis. Another international law issue connected to the fact that sanctions kill and the present world context in which unilateral coercive measures in the form of sanctions in which finds today we find some one third of the world's people under sanctions, yet he only legal sanctions are sanctions imposed by the UN under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter. The UN General Assembly has condemned the unilateral sanctions repeatedly. Our guest describes the complicity of the MSM in misleading the US public and the geopolitical forces in the world today and while condemning Russia for its ‘illegal invasion' of Ukraine he also provides evidence to support his claim and belief that in the context of recent history, it is the US not Russia which is guilty of violating more international law than any other country. Dr Charlie Clements - A Journey of Conscience: The Anniversary of Archbishop Romero Assassination, US enabled Death Squads and War Crimes Remembered Dr Charlie Clements was radicalized into a peace justice activist through the lies he saw and was a part of in Viet Nam. On 3/7/1982 he entered FMLN controlled area on Guazapa Volcano El Salvador to provide medicine to peasant campesinos For Charlie best example of war crimes was symbolized by Archbishop and our US nuns being raped and murdered. They like so many others were accused of being communist because they were working with the poor. US allied slogans included ‘Be Patriotic, kill a Priest!” Meanwhile fraudulent elections were put forth as proof of democracy to the US public by Dick Cheney and others. To support unfairness most often requires repression. A thousand Salvadorans not military operatives but mainly civil society noncombatants per month were being disappeared, tortured and/or killed by US enabled death squads. FMLN broadly supported by the people. That's how they got food, intelligence & hid. Its very hard to defeat a movement supported by the majority population. During govt sweeps whole villages had to move often through government controlled areas. If they were caught worse than death awaited them. Stories of a mother suffocating her child to keep from giving up positions and certain slaughter of all. Therefore, often that was the function of the FMLN to stall or distract army so civilians could flee government sweeps . Imagine: a 1980 NYT picture of a peasant holding up a bolt action rifle from WWI, & shooting at an A-37 fighter jet with a gatling gun on board that is shooting a hundred thousand rounds per minute (the equivalent of putting a bullet in every square foot of a football field every 60 seconds). And the question posed by our government & the MSM war promoting propagandists is: “Where did that peasant get that rifle?” Don't Be Late! and siempre fieles, Pgatos 4/3/2022 pgatos00@gmail.com

Sect of State John Kerry 9/3/2013 Deceitful Testimony: Are US Government Foreign Policy Misrepresentations the Rule Rather than the Exception? When introducing his new Environmental Czar, Joe Biden described former Secretary of State John Kerry with a number of accolades including “there is no one I trust more.” On 9/3/2013 John Kerry testified in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He was arguing for the authorization of US Military action against the Syrian government because he argued that with absolute certainty the Assad government had gassed his own people on 8/21/2013. Bringing Light Into Darkness challenged the US government claims of certainty and later were vindicated, by among other things a June 2021 finding by rootclaim.org that it was our allies fighting the Assad government and not the Assad government that wit 96 % certainty were the parties responsible for the horrific war crime. This show recounts not one, not two major, but a half dozen falsehoods that John Kerry promoted during his 9/3/13 testimony under oath. This show presents the evidence for this claim and invites you to critically evaluate its merit. Yet Kerry and mainstream media have never publicly taken accountability for these false claims to this day. Think about it the Pentagon Papers proves we were lied to about Vietnam. The Afghan Papers prove we were lied to for 20 years in Afghanistan. You know about the Iraqi lies that took us to war there and we could go on. But tonight, we take a deep dive into government lies followed by no accountability and suggest we be careful in believing everything we think about Russia regarding the Russian invasion based on a long track record of misrepresenting the truth to the good Us public citizenry. So, this week we switch to trying to determine who and what to believe in these informational wars. And in that vein, we visit the integrity, or the lack thereof, of what we are told by our government and what history has consistently revealed. Ukraine, US Foreign Policy ‘Sovereignty Busting' Methods & Iraq War Crimes Sovereignty is the state of being free from the control or power of another. US citizens are profoundly ignorant of the extent that the sovereignty of other nations are routinely violated as a matter of policy, not aberration, by US foreign policy. We explore the methods used therein to undermine said sovereignty, in service of profiteering for big business interests at the direct and inverse impoverishing of majority populations in the countries we intervene in. As a result of this profound ignorance of the means and methods of US foreign policy we are easily manipulated into believing Ukraine sovereignty was violated by Russia rather than the United States long before the 2/24/22 Russian invasion of Ukraine. In the limited time we have available tonight BLID shares the profile in two historical examples of how we, through our toolbox of US foreign policy techniques, are masters at ‘sovereignty busting' and how its success is intimately connected to the public relations framing of such interventions by weaponizing the news to reframe these illegal interventions as ‘democracy building'. You will see how the Guatemala coup in 1954 revealed the complicity between how big business owns and ultimately dictates US government policy through its incestuous relationship with those that occupy and run our government. The 1973 Chilean coup lessons are unveiled and reveal how US techniques of penetrating nearly every sector of civil society by US CIA driven monies and interest subverted Chilean sovereignty. We show how the Ukraine subversion was executed by the evolution and influences of US government agencies and agents such as USAID and the NED. The second half of the show features guest Alan Pogue, esteemed photo documentarist and Viet Nam medic and veteran. We juxtapose his eye witnessed US targeting of Iraq water and electrical grids during his four visits to Iraq in the lead up to the US invasion, versus the accusation that Russia is targeting civilians as a matter of policy as we speak. Celebrating IWD: The Lives they Save & the Wealth they create for Others International Women's Day is celebrated on Bringing Light Into Darkness (BLID) as homage is paid to women for the oppression, they face in the world well into the 21st century. While wealth inequality & the wealth of colonial powers got a jump start through slavery, today wealth inequality has found surrogate sources to exploit. On IWD we recognize the oppression of women today that help line the pockets of the wealthy. Did you know that as of 2019, the world's 2,153 billionaires, had more wealth than 4.6 billion people. Where does such wealth & wealth inequality come from? According to the pre-pandemic January 2020 Oxfam report the bottom of the economy, women and girls, especially the disenfranchised, are putting in 12.5 billion hours every day of care work for free, and countless more hours for poverty wages. Oxfam calculated that this unpaid work labor of women, adds value to the economy of at least $10.8 trillion annually. Tending to others, cooking, cleaning, and fetching water and firewood are essential daily tasks for the well-being of societies, communities and the functioning of the economy that save untold lives. Special guests, Austin, Texas duo Kristin Davidson and Carolyn Phillips of Hardened & Tempered join BLID to share how their professional life experiences serving the human condition in Oncology caregiving and in Law legally representing the indigent has shaped the messaging of their music. This guide https://modafinil.org/how-to-get-modafinil-prescription/ covers everything you need to know about how to get a modafinil prescription. It covers approved uses of modafinil, its negative effects & safety precautions (especially negative interaction with certain foods & meds), how to get the “smart tab” prescription, why its need for a prescription vary from country to country, as well as where to shop the “smart tab” online from a legit vendor without Rx. As discussed in the guide, it's feasible to get the “smart tab” prescription from a doctor, but it all relies on the situations surrounding the individual's requirement for modafinil. Besides, the “smart tab” isn't considered as a controlled substance & undoubtedly may be bought over the counter (OTC) in some other countries such as India or Mexico where it's available as Modiodal & can be bought OTC. Certainly, as mentioned in the guide, shopping the “smart tab” online is relatively faster, easier, cheaper, & doesn't always necessitate a prescription provided that you order modafinil from a legit & reliable e-pharmacy that offers it without Rx. Christmas music seems to be unstoppable with new songs and albums coming out every year, so Bill and Jennifer have a lot to talk about from traditional, classic tunes, whether they're overplayed and fall out of fashion; to innovative covers; to novelty and funny songs, new and old; to caroling and kids' TV shows; to artists who unexpectedly turn in an awesome song; and those we'd rather forget, especially if they included their kids on the recording. Whether Christmas is a happy or sad time for you, we've got recommendations. With co-host Bill Aho.Thoughts? Comments? Potshots? In the early 80's, drought caused a famine that crippled the nation of Ethiopia. It was a bad scene. Half of the mortality rate is said to be attributable to “human rights violations.” People around the world were moved, like Irish singer-songwriter Bob Geldof, who along with Midge Ure, wrote a fundraiser song. Who could they get to sing it? How about “everybody”? The likes of Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Boy George, Bono, and Sting joined forces as Band Aid to record the fast-selling single in UK history, asking us the question “Do They Know It's Christmas?” My name's… Some songs rub us the wrong way because they're sung by shrieking children on now-oudated equipment was was not kind to female and higher-pitched voices, songs like I'm Getting Nuthin for Christmas and All I Want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth, standards which I think think would have died away if we weren't all made to sing them in elementary school. Some are painfully goofy, like Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer, but you almost have to give them a pass since it seems they accomplished what they set out to do. Some songs make us their enemy by borrowing into our brains and setting up shop for hours or days on end, the dreaded holiday earworm, like Jingle Bell Rock and Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree. The mere mention of the title is enough to activate them like a sleeper cell of obnoxious holiday cheer. Banned You might be able to forbid people in your own home from playing songs that irritate you –and I stress “might”-- but if you can find yourself with a bit of authority and a big enough humbug up your butt, you can try to make it so nobody has to hear the song either. For instance, the 1952 classic “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” sung by 13-year-old Jimmy Boyd from Mississippi. Did you realize the song was about the little boy not realizing that his Dad was dressed as Santa? It had to be pointed out to me, and embarrassingly recently. People were *scandalized by the musical marriage of sex and Christmas, with one churchgoer stating “mockery of decent family life as well as Christ's birthday.” Many pearls were clutched. They'd probably clutch them pearls twice as hard if I'd been there to tell them Jesus wasn't born on 12/25, but that's another show. Boston's Catholic Archdiocese denounced it and the young Boyd had to meet with church leaders to explain that Mommy and Santa were properly, sanctily married. A West Virginia broadcasting company prohibited its radio stations from playing this “insult to Santa Claus.” The same thing happened to one of my husband's favorite songs, Lou Monte's “Dominick the Donkey,” but the people of WV went to bat for the little donkey who could take the Italian hills that were too much for the reindeer. The public protested the ban so forcefully that it was repealed after less than two weeks; and this was in 1960, when 20% of homes in the US still didn't have a telephone. For every time the hubs plays Dominick the Donkey, I play the Pogue's Fairytale of New York at least twice. A lot of folks don't like, and I respect our difference of opinions, and think it's the farthest thing from a cheery Xmas song, and I agree with y'all there. The 1987 duet with singer Kirsty MacColl, quickly became a UK holiday classic, famous then infamous in turn. It tells the story of a toxic couple who seem to love each deep down, but should probably not be allowed within 200m of each other. There's talk of drug use and insults, including a certain homophobic slur to rhyme with the word “maggot.” In December 2019, BBC radio DJ Alex Dyke said he was cutting the song from his program. The BBC had previously censored the song in 2007 with an unconvincing word-swap, but this brought more backlash than the original version had. The BBC reversed course for a few years, then put the censored version back up. What do you think? soc med Some songs we consider absolute standards, impeccable and indispensable, made people in their day as prickly as holl and less than jolly. The BBC worried that “I'll Be Home for Christmas” could damage British morale during World War II, so no air-play for you! In an amazingly blunt statement that would definitely trend on Twitter today: “We have recently adopted a policy of excluding sickly sentimentality which, particularly when sung by certain vocalists, can become nauseating and not at all in keeping with what we feel to be the need of the public in this country.” One of the most frequently cover and burlesqued-to songs, Santa Baby, wouldn't have become the classic it did if it had been sung by anyone other than the utterly incomparable Eartha Kitt. Who doesn't love a Christmas song dripping in sexuality, sung by a loudly self-confident mixed race woman? In 1953, a lot of people. Radio stations refused to play it and political officials gnashed their teeth after Kitt performed Santa Baby at a dinner for the king and queen of Greece that November. That was an unusual sentence and I'm stalling for time to let you process it. However, Billboard magazine reported “Neither the King nor his Queen were one whit disturbed by the chantress's performance, nor by the song.” Kitt was quoted as saying it was ‘inconceivable that anyone would question the ingenious poetry of the song.'” I don't know about poetry, but I do know I don't want to hear any version other than hers. Chipmunks My hatred for this next song cannot be overstated. I almost hired an editor just for this section. It's shrill, it's pointless, and it's been playing for 63 freaking years. It's the goddamn Chipmunks' song aka Christmas Don't Be Late. I'm mad already. Named after the president, chief engineer, and founder of Liberty Records, the furry little characters are the members of a “band”, called Alvin And The Chipmunks, while a “man” named David Seville functions as their human manager, catapulting them to super stardom. The Chipmunks, three singing cartoon rodents in Victorian nightdresses apparently, or maybe ill-fitted sweater dresses, were the brainchild of a songwriter named Ross Bagdasarian, though he was better known by the pseudonym of David Seville, the name that would be immortalized as The Chipmunk's fictitious manager. Bagdasarian was the son of Armenian immigrants to California, who served in the Army Air Force in WWII, which is how he came to find himself stationed in Seville, Spain. He did a bit of acting, landing minor roles in Rear Window and Stalag 17. Songwriting played out considerably better. In 1951, he used the melody of an Armenian folk song to write Rosemary Clooney's hit, Come On-a My House. [sfx clip] Bagdasarian-cum-Seville began toying around with voice distortion effects, speeding up and slowing down his voice to achieve the cute high pitched sound of the little animal's voices. Consumer tape decks at the time had changeable speeds, but usually only in simple binary multiples, doubling or halving the speed, creating sounds an octave apart. Changing speeds of voices in these limited multiples creates extremely high or low pitches that sound too extreme for most purposes. Disney used half-speed recording for his Chip ‘n Dale cartoon characters, making the extremely fast dialogue difficult to understand. As a result, dialog recorded at that speed had to consist of very short phrases. Seville's chief innovation was to use tape machines that could vary speeds in between these extremes, creating more understandable and thus emotionally accessible voices that worked well for both singing and spoken dialogue. The Chipmunk Song made its debut on Christmas 1958 and immediately became a smash hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Singles chart. It would be the “band's” first and only #1 song, as well as Seville's second and final, No. 1 single. The first was the song Witch Doctor, wanna hear it here it goes [sfx clip] I guess when you have a hammer… A write-up in Life magazine in 1959, noted that Bagdasarian/Seville was the first case in the "annals of popular music that one man has served as writer, composer, publisher, conductor and multiple vocalist of a hit record, thereby directing all possible revenues from the song back into his pocket." That'd be impressive enough even if you didn't know that Seville couldn't read or write music, nor play any instruments, but now you do know that, so you should be quite impressed. The Chipmunk Song earned them three Grammy Awards at the very first Grammy's the following May. I'm going to say that again, because I don't think you heard me. The Chipmunks song won three Grammy's. In fairness, one is for best children's song. A few years later, The Chipmunks landed their own television show as cartoon characters, but it did not command the same success their music career. After Bagdasarian passed away unexpectedly in 1972, his son and daughter-in-law took over the voices of The Chipmunks, but it would take nearly ten years for The Chipmunks made it back to TV, with their 1981 Christmas special, the ingeniously named “A Chipmunk Christmas.” Like a holiday Jason Vorhees, "The Chipmunk Song" re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 in 2007 with the CGI Alvin and Chipmunks movie. As of December 25, 2011, Nielsen SoundScan estimated total sales of the digital track at 867,000 downloads, making it third on the list of all-time best-selling Christmas/holiday digital singles. #3 was Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24 from Trans-Siberian Orchestra, who I've had the mixed blessing to see live – the performance was great but the stage light swept over the audience constantly; it was like having a camera flash go off in your face several times a minute. #1 is, to the surprise of no one, Mariah Carey's 1994 "All I Want for Christmas Is You" and that's all the more attention she's getting from me. If you ever want a real smdh moment, Google Mariah Carey's requirements to appear on camera for interviews. The word “diva” doesn't begin to describe it. Wonderful Now this one depends on the day. Some days, it's so bad it's good and some days, and for some people all days, it's the regular kind of bad. [sfx clip] Say what you will about it, you can't say Paul McCartney didn't put in the work. Wonderful Christmastime features McCartney on guitar, bass, keyboards, drums and vocals, even the creepy-sounding ‘choir of children.' Makes one wonder why he even kept a band around. You see the other members of Wings in the video, but the song was all McCartney. Like a number of holiday classics that you heard about in the episode #92, The Jews Who Wrote Christmas, Wonderful Christmastime was written on a ‘boiling hot day in July', and recorded during sessions for the McCartney II album. It apparently took the former Beatle just ten minutes to pen the song which – some of us find that more readily-believable than others. One of the most memorable elements of the song is the odd synthesiser sound that punctuates it throughout. That is, if you care to know, a Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, which was also used on the hit songs Bette Davis Eyes and What a Fool Believes. Though I suppose it's still a Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 even if you don't care to know. It peaked at number six on the UK Singles Chart and has since become of the most widely played Christmas songs on radio. Bonus fact: The Beatles only really had one Christmas release – Christmas Time Is Here Again, which was distributed to their fan club in 1967. I imagine that would fetch a pretty pence on the secondary market. [sfx typing] checking ebay…Oh, they're actually pretty cheap. If you don't like the song, you're not alone. McCartney himself isn't all that keen on it, but he has begun playing it on UK tours in recent years. You gotta give the people what they want and clearly enough people want Wonderful Christmastime. According to the Forbes website, McCartney earns over $400,000 royalties from the song every year, though other sources claim that figure is probably the cumulative total. Little Drummer Boy As time passes, tastes change, culture shifts, new things are created and old things fall away. We rarely ride in one-horse open sleighs –I can't remember the last time I was even in a closed one-horse sleigh– and it seems really strange to us that people sat about telling ghost stories. So maybe that's why I don't understand The Little Drummer Boy. How is a drum solo an appropriate gift for a sleeping infant and the woman who just squoze him out in a cow-shed? The ox and lamb kept time? That's literally the drummer's only job. Well, that and making the rest of the band's drinking problem look reasonable. Hey, what's the difference between a drummer and a drum machine? You only have to punch the info into the drum machine once. [sfx rimshot] What do you call a drummer who broke up with his girlfriend? Homeless. [sfx rimshot] Don't worry, drummers, this abuse isn't exclusive. What do you call the pretty girl on a bassist's arm? A tattoo. That's my time, good night! How old do you think this slow, plodding song is? I couldn't have put a year to my guess, but for some reason it surprised me that it was written in 1941. The composure was a teacher named Katherine Kennicott Davis. Originally called "Carol of the Drum" –does what it says on the tin– was based on an unidentified Czech carol and intended for choirs. One group of singers took a liking to it and propelled it to success in 1951 - The Trapp Family Singers. As boring as it is, The Little Drummer Boy lets us draw a straight line between the Trapp Family and ‘the lad insane' David Bowie. In 1977, Bowie was 'actively trying to normalize' his career. Debilitating drug addiction and accusations of Nazi-sympathizing threatened to sink his earning potential, so it was a no-brainer for him to appear on Bing Crosby's Merrie Olde Christmas. Crosby was a crooner and golden age Hollywood icon and seemed like a means to the end because, as Bowie said later, “my mom likes him.” The promise by producers to promote the video for Bowie's single Heroes, fitting as poorly as it did in the middle of a holiday special, certainly didn't hurt either. The special starred Crosby, his actual family, and stars of the day like the model Twiggy, who my mother has still not forgiven for coming along and making curvy, busty figures unpopular. So Bing Crosby and David Bowie. On paper, it made no sense. But in reality…it made even less sense. A negative amount of sense, if that's mathematically possible. I mean, just look at this juxtaposition. You can see the two together on the Vodacast app… Bowie arrived in a mink coat, an earring, and bright red lipstick….to appear alongside Bing Crosby. Bowie agreed to producers' demands to tone his look down, but asked/begged the producers if there was anything else, anything at all, he could sing, letting them know in no uncertain terms that he hated the song. "Ian Fraser, who co-wrote the 'Peace on Earth' portion, told The Washington Post in 2006. 'We didn't know quite what to do.' Instead of panicking, he and two other men working on the special — Buz Kohan and Larry Grossman — hunkered down at a piano in the studio basement and spent 75 minutes working up the tune. Ever professionals, Bowie and Crosby perfected the new song in less than an hour." It was that professionalism that actually brought the men together. According to Crosby's daughter, Mary, who was 18 at the time and a big Bowie fan, "Eventually, Dad realized David was this amazing musician, and David realized Dad was an amazing musician. You could see them both collectively relax and then magic was made." Bonus fact: Mary went on to become an actress, starring in the hit TV show Dallas, but she isn't the only thespian the Crosby legacy produced. Bing's granddaughter Denise will always have a place in my heart as Tasha Yar, first chief of security on the Enterprise D and if you don't know what I'm talking about, maybe *you're* not cool enough to sit with *us* at lunch. The special was recorded in mid-September, but Crosby would not see it released. He died of a massive heart attack after a day of golfing in mid-October, so the special was aired posthumously at the end of November in the U.S. and on Christmas Eve in England. Bizarrely, The single proved to be one of Bowie's fastest-selling singles, selling over 250,000 copies within its first month and being certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry one month after its release. And what does it say about me that I had to do a second take, beause I read it as British Pornographic Industry. They certify very different records. One thing that helped propel that success was the fledgeling Music Television network, which in its original primitive state actually played music videos. When it launched in 1981, there weren't really enough videos to fill up an entire channel, so they played what they had, including the 'Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy' clip, a lot. This prompted RCA to issue an official release in 1982 with the arbitrary single B-side of "Fantastic Voyage" from The Lodger album. Bowie was annoyed with that move, contributing to his departure from the label soon after. Still, it was a high-charting single for Bowie in the post-Scary Monsters era, at least until Let's Dance came out three months later. And that's…So the question was “Do they know it's Christmas?”. Since Ethiopia is ⅔ Christian, yes. I'd go out on a limb and say even the ⅓ that's Muslim knows. But the important thing is that 100% of the royalties go to the cause, and that figure sits north of $250 million. Among the luminary names involved was a pre-beard George Michaels. Chris & Kelsey discuss rear-window ethics and sing Rihanna a little too much. The Classic Film: Rear Window (1954) "A wheelchair-bound photographer spies on his neighbors from his apartment window and becomes convinced one of them has committed murder” (IMDb.com). We're back to the Hitchcock classics with one of the holy trinity (according to Chris), a suspenseful thriller that asks, "Will she change for him?" The Modern Film: Disturbia (2007) "A teen living under house arrest becomes convinced his neighbor is a serial killer” (IMDb.com). A blatant rip-off of the Rear Window concept (along with three other movies we've covered on the show), Disturbia may not wow, but it's pretty good teen fare at the very least. Thirteen years before ever being broadcast, the Grammys took their first steps into rock n' roll history on May 4, 1959 - when, curiously, they were held in two separate cities on the same night. If you were a fan of rock n'roll, however, you'd have been sorely disappointed by the winners - ‘Tequila' by The Champs, Perry Como's ‘Catch A Falling Star', and, bizarrely, David Seville & The Chipmunks' ‘The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)'. In this episode, Olly, Rebecca and Arion explain why The Chipmunks were so acclaimed, consider whether the Grammys have a problem with race, and reveal which noughties novelty pop song was inspired by The Sugarhill Gang... The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics
Today, we are going to be digging in on a particular aspect of optimism bias called the planning fallacy. Essentially, we humans are pretty much doomed with underestimating how much something will cost or how long it will take, even if we have evidence showing otherwise. This is why projects like the Big Dig come in years late and billions of dollars over budget, or why you constantly have a to-do list more ambitious than can actually be completed. In today’s episode, Melina will spend a little bit of time telling you about how it works and what studies have found, as well as tips for overcoming this bias (and let me tell you, this is one of my personal biggest challenges so these are tips I can provide from experience!) Show Notes: [00:53] Essentially, we humans are pretty much doomed with underestimating how much something will cost or how long it will take, even if we have evidence showing otherwise. [03:02] I’m a big victim to planning fallacy. As an ambitious and optimistic person, I am confident I can do things quickly and perfectly each time, and I am prone to underestimate how long something will take me to complete. [03:42] I’ve been able to identify this tendency in myself. Understanding planning fallacy helps me adapt and do better in practice than I would naturally. [05:10] We fall victim again and again because success is so much easier to imagine the successful scenario than the failure. [07:26] Melina shares about the Big Dig in Boston, Seattle viaduct project and Sydney Opera House. [08:57] It is important to know that planning fallacy is more than mere procrastination. Having deadlines doesn’t necessarily help either because people are expecting things will go smoother than they will and aren’t planning to fail. [10:34] The focusing illusion shows us that as you look at or consider something, it feels like it is more important than it really is. Fundamental attribution error is about when you attribute external or internal motivation onto a situation incorrectly. [12:22] You have that optimism bias saying you have learned from your past projects and this is really similar to the project you did for XYZ company so you can capitalize on some of that work so that internal dialogue and story of your own skill is played up. [13:03] Your brain likes to think it is constantly getting better, so it feels good to predict you will be faster than before. [13:49] When you don’t plan for those external pieces and factor them into your time budget, you are falling victim to planning fallacy. [13:59] One helpful option is to have people determine their timing as if a coworker was taking on the project. If you were to consider the coworker you will have less of the intrinsic stuff and can see the external pieces a little more clearly. Especially if you choose a coworker who you think is slower than you. [14:55] Ather brain trick to watch out for is bikeshedding, where your brain will look for smaller things to work on and make you think you need to do those in this exact moment and you can’t work on the thing you really should be working on until this other thing is complete. [15:34] This may mean planning for breaks to give your brain a little bikeshedding treat to keep working. [18:17] My advice: to plan your day’s commitments using the worst-case scenario. [19:35] One of my suggestions to stay on task and keep my brain organized is using a Time Timer. [20:09] I want to stress that your brain is going to tell you that you don’t need to do this. That you don’t need as much time as other people or that you won’t get distracted. That is the optimism bias and planning fallacy talking. [20:54] Every task can be sorted by whether it is urgent or important and falls into one of four quadrants (check your freebie worksheet to try it out). [22:08] Planning for distractions will help you keep to your projected timelines and overcome planning fallacy. [24:23] Narrowing your goals and priorities to what matters and being present when you are doing those things has helped me to tackle the planning fallacy and I think it can for you too. [25:32] Sorry to tell you this, but groups are worse at predicting how long things will take or how much something will cost. [26:02] One way to get around this for groups is to have each person or department do their forecast on their own and then have someone add them all up behind the scenes instead of having a group discussion. [27:06] The plan is only as good as the tracking. [28:20] If you don’t include the external stuff in the calculation there is no tracking system or project management tool that can overcome planning fallacy. [30:21] Another tip that studies have shown can help people overcome planning fallacy is to intentionally think about setbacks. [31:45] When planning for how long something will take, we often look at the full elephant instead of all its components. When you don’t break a project into small enough subtasks, you are going to underestimate how long things will take. [33:49] Unpacking the project into those minutia tasks will allow you to more properly see the full scope and allocate enough time to get it all done. [34:36] Remember not to get down on yourself about planning fallacy. It is a natural human tendency that spans across gender, culture and personality type. Knowing how your brain may try to trick you and using the tips in this episode can help you be less likely to succumb to it in the future, which can make you happier, less stressed, and living up to your commitments more often. In this sermon, David Capoccia examines Jesus’ Parable of the Ten Virgins. The main message of this parable is that all people must get ready to meet Christ and enter into his kingdom. The limit was definitely pushed for this weeks show. Rap star Pusha T is getting into the restaurant business with a brand new establishment in Washington, D.C. The rapper's new eatery Kitsuen will serve up delicious ramen noodle bowls along with craft cocktails. There have been widespread reports floating on the internet that the government had dropped all charges against Tekashi 6ix9ine, and that he would be released in 72 hours. As an update, 69 did receive 2 years and is set to be released at the end of 2020, when he'll also be sentenced to 300 hours of community service and will be required to pay a $35,000 fine. That's better than 47 years!!! Mariah Carey has broken a lot of records throughout her long-standing career since she debuted on the music scene in the early 1990s, but this new accolade takes the cake. Carey’s beloved holiday song, “All I Want For Christmas,” hit number one on the Billboard charts for the first time in 25 years. This is the 19th number 1 song for Mariah, who is poised to tie the Beatles’ for most number one records of all-time. “All I Want For Christmas” is also the first Christmas song to top the charts since The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late) in 1958. Guest Info/Bio: This week we speak with Dr. Pauline Boss. Pauline is an educator and researcher who is widely recognized for her groundbreaking research on what is now known as the theory of ambiguous loss. All losses are touched with ambiguity. Yet, Dr. Boss’s research and practice have revealed that those who suffer ambiguous loss, losses without finality or resolution, bear a particular and challenging burden. Whether it is the experience of caring for a parent who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, or waiting to learn the fate of a spouse or family member who has disappeared in a disastrous event like 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina, the experience of loss is magnified and is more significantly challenging to overcome because the loss is linked to a lack of closure. People who experience and live with an ambiguous loss find it hard to understand their situation, difficult to cope and almost impossible to move ahead with their lives without professional counseling, love and support. Since 1973, Dr. Boss has studied ambiguous loss, and trained and worked with psychologists and counselors to help individuals and families who have experienced a life-altering ambiguous loss, often described as a frozen grief, recover their resiliency despite the on-going ambiguity. Drawing on her research and clinical experience, Dr. Boss is committed to working with families to develop meaningful strategies that help them cushion the pain, cope with ambiguous loss and move forward to live productive lives. Pauline Boss received her Ph.D. in Child Development and Family Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1975. From 1975 to 1981, Dr. Boss was an assistant and then associate professor with tenure at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1981, she joined the Department of Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota and continued to work in that position until 2005. In 1995-96, Dr. Boss was appointed Visiting Professor at the Harvard Medical School, and in 2004-2005, she was the Moses Distinguished Professor at the Hunter School of Social Work in New York City. For a good percentage of us work-a-day-grumblers, three little words habitually accompany our entrance to work, a meeting, a luncheon or even getting home from work: “Sorry, I’m late.” Does this sound like you? Hello cubicle cutoff, open space overdue, corner office out of luck, home den delayed and coffee shop sluggish. My name is Brock Armstrong and I am… not the Workplace Hero. Let me set the stage for you - It’s Monday morning. In a surprise turn of events, you wake up feeling great! You had a fun weekend of good sleep, good food, fresh air and exercise, and aside from the one drink-drink you had with dinner on Saturday night, you adhered to your long term plan extremely well. Sadly, something goes wonky with the kids, or you take a little too long chatting with that cute barista, or doing your morning journalling, or spacing out on your coffee cup, and you find yourself running late. “Not again!” you think to yourself. “I hate being late!” For a good percentage of us work-a-day-grumblers, three little words habitually accompany our entrance to work, a meeting, a luncheon or even getting home from work: “Sorry, I’m late.” Does this sound like you? A ton of studies have looked into why some of us are chronically late. The truth is that there are many reasons why people just can’t get somewhere on time. But there seems to be one common thread running through the behaviour of chronically late individuals that may be a universal reason for their perpetual tardiness—and it is a surprising one: People are late because they don’t want to be early. Most of us know people who are always on time because they hate being late. I fall smack dab into this category; in fact, I’m freakishly scared of being late. I often arrive places embarrassingly early, which sometimes prompts me to hide out somewhere around the corner, playing with my phone, just so people don’t notice just how early I actually got there. Because people like me hate to be tardy, we always appear to be on time (even if it is because we hid in a stairwell playing Kwazy Kupcakes on our phone for 20 minutes). But just as we hate to be late, another cohort hates to be early. And if you ask them, these anti-early birds say that they really want to be punctual—they just prefer to be right on time than to be early. Wanting to avoid being early, then, is a strong motivation for why many people who are chronically late and honestly it is hard to reconcile these two competing ideals. So why does this second group hate to be early? There are many reasons but here are a few that I found at PsychologyToday.com: 1. It’s inefficient. Being early requires having to sit around with nothing to do (or play with your phone). The waiting time is just short enough that you can’t get into any other project; as soon as you do, the time is up. 2. They hate the uneasiness of being early. They feel awkward and uncomfortable waiting. They might even feel as if others are watching and judging them, whether this is true or not. Arriving a few minutes early makes you feel proud and confident, but arriving too early can make you feel foolish. You fear others might think that you have no life aside from this event, and you don’t want people to think that your time isn’t valuable either. 3. There is an opportunity cost associated with getting somewhere early. Just as someone else’s time is valuable and you want to respect it by being punctual, so too is your time valuable and you'd rather use it productively than wait around inefficiently. This is a behaviour I saw time and time again with a CEO friend of mine. He was so obsessed with not wasting a moment of his time that he would see a 3-minute window as a chance to get another call done which inevitably took longer than 3 minutes and would start a cascade of lateness for the remainder of the day. 4. Sometimes you do not want to be early to be polite. You may not want to disturb someone by getting there too soon—say, a friend’s dinner party—so you would actually rather get there a little late. In an article at the Huffington Post called: This Is Why You're Late All The Time (And What To Do About It), Diana DeLonzor, author of Never Be Late Again says “Lateness is really a commonly misunderstood problem. Yes, it's a rude act, but I've interviewed hundreds of people and the vast majority of late people really dislike being late, they try to be on time, but this is something that has plagued them throughout their lives. Telling a chronic late person to be on time is like telling a dieter, 'Don't eat so much.'" And it's often a problem that begins early in life. For many people, it started in childhood, and they're late for not only things that have to do with other people, but things that will only hurt themselves. They'll show up to the gym, for instance, 10 minutes before it closes, or they'll even be late for important appointments like job interviews. Part of DeLonzor’s research included a test to measure the differences in how timely and late people perceive the passage of time. The test she devised is a simple one that you can try yourself. Choose three or four pages in a book, mark the time, and start reading. Stop reading when you think ninety seconds have elapsed, then check your watch to see how accurate you were. DeLonzor found that early birds, almost without fail, stopped reading before ninety seconds had passed, while the late-ers put their books down well after the ninety-second mark. The researchers at Cleveland State University also included a time perception test in their lateness study, this time using stop-watches. Interestingly, their results were similar to DeLonzor’s - the late people consistently underestimated the passage of time. There are many many more studies, papers, opinions and theories as to why people are chronically late but we don’t have time to get into all of them in this episode. But what we will do is look at 5 potentially helpful strategies that you can implement if you are one of those always in a hurry and yet always late individuals. And yes, if you are a late person, this is your homework. 1. Reevaluate how long your routines really take. Late people tend to remember the one time they got ready in 20 minutes (instead of 40) or the one time they got to work in seven (instead of 15) minutes. Try writing down your daily habits and then estimating how long you think it takes you to do each one -- then spend a week or so writing down how long each thing actually takes. It's time to relearn how to tell time. 2. Change your thoughts, not just your behaviour. Reframing the way you think about punctuality can be an effective cognitive trick. Instead of stressing about it, sit down with a pen and paper (when you're not in a rush) and jot down all the positives that come with being on time. That is from Teri Bourdeau, a clinical associate professor of behavioural sciences at Oklahoma State University. You might write, for example, that being timely will make you look more responsible, or that it will stir up less conflict with co-workers. Think about the things that are going to motivate you to be on time, and remember them the next time you're trying to cram in too much before a deadline. 3. Get down with downtime. Eternally tardy people, particularly those like my CEO friend that I described earlier, often like to pack in as many activities as possible to maximize productivity, which can make any extra waiting time uncomfortable. One option for coping is to plan out an activity you can do when spare minutes creep up but avoid things like email or returning phone calls as those can easily expand beyond the time available and then you are right back where you started. Now my favourite option is to reframe downtime as something to enjoy between all the rushing -- luxury time instead of wasted time. A big part of the enjoyment of life is just sitting back and talking to the person next to you or looking at the sky or spacing out. Never underestimate the value of a good space-out. 4. Budget your time differently. Timely people will give themselves round numbers to get somewhere -- 30 minutes, for instance. The chronically late, on the other hand, often budget exact times, like 23 minutes, to get somewhere, a habit that DeLonzor calls "split second timing," which doesn't account for the inevitable delays that inevitably pop up. If you're magically arriving exactly “on time,” that means you engaged in split second timing and you probably should not consider yourself to be “on time” unless you're actually “a few minutes early.” 5. Reschedule your day. Habits tend to be reflexive patterns of behaviour and what we need to do is change that pattern. To do that, you can start writing appointments down 30 minutes before they actually happen, which will help you start planning before the last second (kind of like purposely setting a clock 10 minutes ahead to try to fool yourself into being early). Another way to reschedule your day is to reevaluate your to-do list -- chances are, you're simply not going to get everything done. For more info on To-Do lists, check out the podcast episode at workplacehero.me/todo. It’s a listener fave! If you're trying to motivate someone else to stop being chronically late, remember that while Benjamin Franklin espoused the virtues of being early to bed and early to rise, there have always been others who agree instead with Franklin D. Roosevelt, who said: “I think we consider too much the good luck of the early bird and not enough the bad luck of the early worm.” As an early person, I find that statement pithy and fun but it also kind of irks me. In 2013, HuffPost blogger Greg Savage asked the question, "How Did It Get to be OK for People to Be Late for Everything?" And if the 350,000 Facebook likes (and counting) on his post are any indication, he's not the only one wondering. This is what Savage wrote: It's simply that some people no longer even pretend that they think your time is as important as theirs. And technology makes it worse. It seems texting or emailing that you are late somehow means you are no longer late. Rubbish. You are rude. And inconsiderate. But while the behaviour of keeping someone waiting on you is, decidedly, rude, it doesn't necessarily mean your tardy friend is doing it on purpose, or that he or she is a rude, inconsiderate person -- in fact, as we have explored and learned here today, there are many psychological and perhaps even physiological components that can contribute to being perpetually late. Which leaves me at a very unsatisfying impasse. I want to shake my fists at late people and some how to punish them into changing their ways but I know that won’t work. But at the same time, I don’t want to just shrug it off and try to be ok with being the one who has to call hospital emergency rooms looking for missing friends. But at this point, my Workplace Heroes, I have no answer for you other than to say, thank goodness I have more than just Solitaire to fiddle with on my phone. And now, I guess I will just cue the sound effects and take us home. ** Workplace Hero is researched, written, narrated and recorded by me Brock Armstrong in rainy downtown Vancouver. There’s A Playwright In My Soup! Nick Randell joins multi-award winning playwright, author, script writer and actor, Terence Frisby, at his home in West London, to chew the fat and talk about his successful career to date. There’s A Girl In My Soup, his long-running comedy that opened in 1966 at the Gielgud Theatre (formerly The Globe), ran for over 1,000 performances, before becoming a worldwide smash hit with long runs on Broadway, Paris (with Gérard Depardieu), Berlin, Stockholm, Sydney, Rome (starring the Italian singer-songwriter-actor, Domenico Modugno) and more. His script of the successful 1970 film (which starred Peter Sellers and Goldie Hawn)won the Writer’s Guild of Great Britain Award in 1970 for Best British Comedy Screenplay. But was Terence ultimately happy with what ended up on screen? A charming and candid interview, covering… Television - Adam Adamant/Lucky Fella/That’s Love (the last of which won the Gold Award for Comedy at the 1991 Houston International Film Festival). Theatre - There’s A Girl In My Soup/Kisses On A Postcard (a musical - telling of his experiences as an evacuee as a 7-year-old from London to Cornwall during World War Two), Rough Justice (gripping courtroom drama starring Tom Conti about the fall-out from the death of a brain-damaged baby). Radio - It’s Not Fair And Don’t Be Late (from which Kisses On A Postcard derives - won The Giles Cooper Award for BBC Radio Four and was broadcast no less than ten times in a few months on both BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service). Print - Kisses On A Postcard/Outrageous Fortune (*an autobiographical story about his fifteen years as a litigant-in-person in the High Court following his spectacularly awful divorce and custody battle).
