“Grandma, would you tell us that old adage again?” “Yes dears. A long time ago, your ancestors used to say: if all the computers in the world shut down, it's because the furries logged off for a day.” In this season 6 premiere, Hannah and Maia chat about the most maligned subculture on the internet: furries - a group of people with an above-average interest in anthropomorphic creatures, who everyone seems to despise. Thanks to some unflattering depictions in popular media like CSI and the Tyra Show, the world believes furries to be a group of maladjusted sexual deviants. But have furries gotten a bad rap? Is it really sexual deviancy, or a post-humanist movement that has been way ahead of us this whole time? We may very well be f*cking with the wrong group of people (after all, they created their own ISP before the White House did). Tangents include: the emotional power of Aquamarine, Tyra teaching Hannah about Islamophobia, and the Kyle Jenner-ification of My Little Pony. We have spent a lot of time on this show talking about what brings furries into the fandom. But that would mean nothing if they left immediately after. Fortunately, that isn't the case; furries tend to stay around in the fandom for a long time, many for their entire lives! If you have taken a look at the attendance numbers of furry conventions recently, you would have noticed quite the jump in attendance numbers, especially since 2019. The end goal for a vast majority of members of the furry fandom is to make friends with their fellow fandom members. But trying to make friends in any social space is difficult and since the journey is different for everyone, trying to make a guide for any furry to follow to make friends is quite futile. However, one piece of the friend-making puzzle is finding other common interests or hobbies that other furries have. On this episode, we take a look at some of the other things that furries like to do outside of being a furry, in an effort to help strike up a conversation with another furry and maybe even become their friend! The furry fandom is a pretty cool place to be, and I'm sure many members of the community would agree. But, like any group of humans, it's not perfect, and in order to help fix some of its flaws, it's important to identity what those flaws are in the first place. As a hobby, being a furry is weird. It might be something that someone engages with a lot, but might not want to tell everyone about up front, especially if that includes their parents, guardians, or primary caretakers. But it's hard to hide something this all-encompassing and those in charge of raising you are going to find out and potentially want to learn more. As someone who travels pretty frequently, I can sometimes forget how complicated the process of attending a furry convention. There's a lot of things to keep track of, and even if you have the basic pitfalls accounted for, there are still some unexpected struggles of attending a con that not figuring out can break an otherwise fantastic event. I've fallen victim to some of the struggles at some of the cons I've been through, but that also gives me a chance to talk about them here, in an effort to have you avoid them yourself. It's no secret that there's a lot of younger members in the furry fandom. Despite the age of the fandom itself, most people that you'll find in the community will be in their mid to late teens. Ria got involved in "Furry" fandom a decade ago, drawn to this fuzzy niche culture by its emphasis on creativity and quirky social gatherings. Over the years, however, she saw it succumb to "social justice" ideas, where people policed each other's thoughts and art on the basis of fighting oppression. In tandem, a sexual element began to become more prevalent, with a disturbing amount of "minor-attracted" art and "grooming" behavior. Oh yeah, she also was trans for a while, and detransitioned due to the health effects of testosterone on her female body. One of the finer details about being a part of the furry fandom involves quite a lot of world building. Furries come up with complex and detailed characters or fursonas and use them to interact with them in what is essentially an entirely fan-created universe filled with anthropomorphic animals. It's no surprise then that you might think of furries just being a bunch of specialized role-players, and while that is true on the surface, how furries truly interact with one another create much more "real" experiences than you might think.Follow Me On Twitter for Updates and Info about the Show: @FinnThePantherSources and Stuff to Check Out:Furscience: RoleplayingThank you for checking out the show! iTunes/Apple Podcast listeners: make sure to leave a rating and review! Furries, undoubtedly, have a certain love for animals that is a bit more than the average person. They go so far as to design entire personalities that encompass who they are as an anthropomorphic animal, and use that personality as their entire identity in the context of the fandom. However, they still know at the end of the day they are humans, and that their "animalistic" side of them is seperate from their person. However, there are some people out there that may be part of the furry fandom that do believe they are made up of part human, part animal. It's similar enough to where these individuals, called therians, are often confused with furries themselves, and on this episode, we explain what the differences between the two groups are!Follow Me On Twitter for Updates and Info about the Show: @FinnThePantherSources and Stuff to Check Out:Wikifur: TherianthropyFurscience: Animal IdentificationWikifur: OtherkinThank you for checking out the show! iTunes/Apple Podcast listeners: make sure to leave a rating and review!
