This week, Christiana, Tom and Paul tackle the latest on the global plastics treaty (known as INC-5), which ended last week without a deal. Why were countries unable to agree a deal despite the huge amount of public concern about plastic pollution? What pathways remain for an agreement in 2025? And why is it so important to maintain focus on plastic from a climate point of view? Dive into the challenges and explore potential solutions with the team. Continuing this critical theme, Ellen MacArthur, Founder & Chair of Trustees of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, world record-breaking sailor and circular economy advocate, joins Christiana to share an exclusive conversation as part of a collaboration between The Circular Economy Show and Outrage + Optimism. Together they consider what's next for the global plastics treaty, get excited about the role of the private sector in tackling plastic pollution, and highlight how the visibility of plastics can help capture public attention on climate. Most people waste at least half their time doing irrelevant stuff. Be effective: make what you are doing count, by making a difference. Don't put things off; do them now. Have fun: you are best at what you are most passionate about. And in pursuing what you like best, it's important to have fun. Sustainability Stories: Balancing People, Planet and Profits
I hang on to every word Aradhana Khowala mentions here, as she is well informed and ferocious when it comes to Gender Equality and #BreaktheBias. I learned from her the appalling statistics that it will take an average of 136 years for women and men to reach parity worldwide instead of the 99 years; the gap to close increased by 36 years in the space of just 12 months! Look up the World Economic Forum 2021 Global Gender Gap article if you can't believe it. Yes, there is despair and actions required from CEOS, Corporations, and that's where Aradhana also shares in the episode messages of hope and inspiring examples where change is visible. Closer to my residence country, I learned how Dubai has shown bold thinking with visible commitments and leading from the front, leading by an example. Did you know in UAE there are: Nine women in the cabinet The average age is 38 The youngest minister is 22 years old Some of the topics we discuss in the episode are: 1) Despite the good intentions, we are yet to see results on the ground because of the lack of significant strides. The corporations are still taking baby steps which aren't translating to results 2) Gender Diversity and Tourism Industry: Tourism is the most gender-diverse sector in the world. We have more than 50% of women in our workforce. But the numbers at the top are appalling. We have less than 5% of women CEOs; less than 6% on chairs of the board of listed companies worldwide are women. 3) Examples of countries where Gender Diversity is prevalent and how they got there. 4) Lastly, the change needs to come from being ferocious advocates for change.

Government policies in response to the Covid-19 pandemic have reignited the universal basic income (UBI) debate, showing us the vital lifeline that income support can provide. In the US, Congress has distributed nearly $850 billion through three rounds of stimulus checks. In the UK, the furlough scheme and self-employed income support schemes have helped millions to keep their heads above water. But these measures are temporary and specific, so what can they really tell us about the viability of UBI?The Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration (SEED), a 2-year guaranteed income pilot which began pre-pandemic and concluded in March this year has published results showing that the recipients of an unrestricted, reliable $500 monthly income are happier, healthier and better able to find full time work. Could this be the way out of the crisis that we need? Is there scope for UBI to pick up where the crisis-response income-support schemes end? And critically, can UBI really address persistent imbalances in poverty, income, and wealth?Former Stockton Mayor, Founder & Chair of Mayors for a Guaranteed Income and driving force behind SEED, Michael Tubbs, and co-chair of the Economic Security Project Natalie Foster join us to explore SEED's findings and what a year of state-funded income support means for the UBI debate.#RSAUBIThis conversation was broadcast online on the 20th May 2021 . Kumaravadivel Guruparan gives a talk as part of the Oxford Transitional Justice Research (OTJR) Seminar Series. In 2015, Sri Lankan witnessed regime change that removed President Mahinda Rajapaksa from power. Mahinda Rajapaksa was the President who led the war against the LTTE to its finish in 2009, a war in which thousands of Tamil civilians were killed. The regime change in 2015 was characterised by many of its supporters as a change that would deliver transitional justice. The new regime also employed the language of transitional justice, particularly in the UN Human Rights Council, in its attempt to divert calls for international accountability and justice for crimes committed during the war. The regime was short lived and fell in 2019 returning another Rajapaksa, Gotabaya Rajapakasa the war-time Defence Secretary as President. This talk will seek to explore the politics of identifying the regime change in 2015 as a transitional moment in Sri Lanka. As a general proposition, it will problematise using 'regime change' as an indicator for transition in deeply divided societies. It will argue that a Transitional Justice narrative that is aligned to the liberal peace tradition is bound to fail given that it fails to engage with the structural issues that inhibit democratic change. It will further argue that misplaced optimism generated by such thinly conceived transitional justice efforts may in fact hurt victims and survivors. Dr Kumaravadivel Guruparan served as an academic attached to the Department of Law, University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka between 2010 and 2020 serving as Senior Lecturer at the time of resignation. He served as Head of the Department between January 2017 and November 2019. He is also a practicing attorney and has appeared as lead counsel in a number of cases relating to post-war human rights issues in Northern Sri Lanka including in cases relating to the right to memory, the rights of families of the disappeared and post-war land issues. He is a Co-founder of the Tamil Civil Society Forum and Founder Chair of the Adayaalam Centre for Policy Research, based in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. He holds an LL.B (Hons) from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, a BCL from Balliol College, University of Oxford and a PhD from University College London in Public International Law and Comparative Constitutional Law. He was awarded the Chevening Scholarship in 2010 and the Commonwealth Scholarship in 2013. Guruparan was at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights as a Research Visitor between October 2020 and January 2021.
76: Fundraising During A Perfect Storm (Chris Carnie) SUMMARYHow do you fundraise during a perfect storm? Nonprofit leaders are challenged in numerous ways right now, and face uncharted territory in terms of the fundraising environment in which they must operate. While Chris Carnie’s work originates primarily in the UK and Spain, he brings a global perspective to not only the elements of the storm we must understand, but also ways to better navigate through it. In episode #76 of the Path Podcast, Chris and I discuss how this “storm” is affecting the mindset of many philanthropists, why the concept of venture philanthropy is something we must learn, and specific ways nonprofit leaders can advance their careers using prospect research and strategy.ABOUT CHRISChris Carnie has worked in fundraising since 1980, initially with the Muscular Dystrophy Group, Voluntary Service Overseas and Kings College Hospital, London, and was a researcher in the House of Commons. In 1990 he co-founded Factary, Europe’s leading prospect research agency. In 1993 he became the first advancement researcher to be elected a Fellow of the Institute of Fundraising, and in 1999 the first to be appointed a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA). He was Founder Chair of Researchers in Fundraising, the Institute of Fundraising special interest group, and is a member of the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (USA) of the Association Française de Fundraisers (France) and of the Asociación de Profesionales de Fundraising (Spain). Chris has also been involved in the development of venture philanthropy in Europe since 2003, as a member of the Finance and Funding Group of the European Venture Philanthropy Association. He is the management level trainer in major gift fundraising at ESSEC for the Association Française de Fundraisers’ postgraduate course. Chris has written several books on fundraising and philanthropy, including Find the Funds – a New Approach to Fundraising Research, Fundraising from Europe, and his latest book, How Philanthropy is Changing Europe. According toNAWBO, National Association of Women Business Owners there are more than 9.4 million firms that are owned by women, employing nearly 7.9 million people, and generating $1.5 trillion in sales as of 2015. However, only 8.1 percent of top earners and 14.6 percent of executive officers in corporate America are women. With social media we now have the power to build our own public platforms, and for women, this new reality provides an opportunity to completely bypass traditional power structures. The number of people connected on Facebook is roughly equal to China’s population and being online, women business owners have the power to reach more individuals, build stronger communities and have a greater impact than ever before. This evening we will be discussing the power of webinars for women in business and how they can be used as a tool for branding and marketing products and services. My special guest is Valerie Brown-Baul, Founder & Chair of Spiritual Path Alliance.

For anyone who looks at our government today and says, “Everything seems great to me. No room for improvement here,” well, today’s conversation is not for you.Now that that person has stopped listening, here’s what the rest of America can learn from today’s talk: The problem is even worse that you thought. While most discussion on fixing government deals with the politics and the posturing, we instead might want to focus on something much more difficult to fix: Nobody is actually in charge. A mountain of overlapping, contradictory and often unnecessary laws, regulations, oversight committees and more seem designed specifically to block responsibility and accountability – and ensure the status quo.So how did we get here? How can we get out? And where is the leadership?Few think about the need to simplify and clarify American government, policies and laws more than Philip K. Howard: Lawyer, author and thoughtful critic of the areas of our political system many others seem to ignore. He is Founder & Chair of Common Good and his new book is “The Rule of Nobody: Saving America from Dead Laws and Broken Government.”
The Pan African Holiday Kwanzaa - Its Meaning and Relevance Towards Building an African Renaissance Please join us as we interview Brother Mwalimu Wesley Kabaila. He is a long time community activist, social critic/lecturer sustainable developer and Green consultant. His roots are in the Black Student Movements of the 60's and the Black Cultural Nationalist Movement. His credentials include, founding co-member of Kwanzaa, Former Vice Chair;US organization (which founded Kwanzaa ), and founder and Chair of the Congress of African People. Mr. Kabaila is a dynamic speaker and a passionate advocate of what he defines as the New African Personality (Man and Woman). He subscribes to a redefinition of the African man and woman who are knowledgeable, intelligent, bold, audacious, strong, progressive, and spiritual. He brings an innovative view and perspective of how People of African descent must re-introduce themselves to history and humanity as a free, proud and productive people and make a positive contribution to the forward flow of societal growth and development. Further, he adheres to the position that African Americans and other Diasporans must pursue the creation, re-creation and circulation of cultural imperatives which re-enforces their identity, purpose and direction and enhances their ability to attain political and economic self-reliance in a world which remains indifferent to their ability and/or capacity to create human progress. Mwalimu Kabaila, as the Founder/Chair of the National African American Congress, prescribes a path and map by which Africans engage in a process of attaining Self Determination, Self Respect, Self Defense and Self
