In 1973, through the U.S. Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade, women were given the right of access and privacy to abortion without federal or state-wide regulation. However, on June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned this landmark ruling with the Dobbs vs. Jackson Women's Health Organization case. Now, the right to abortion care and reproductive autonomy can be regulated at a state level. However, the resounding effect is not only fear for abortion rights but also reproductive care as a whole. "Personhood laws” that define life and humanity at conception and fertilization exist in certain states, creating an implication that interweaves more discussions regarding fertility and reproductive medicine, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), egg freezing, management of ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages, and criminalization of practitioners who facilitate such procedures. We are joined today by Dr. Serena H. Chen, a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist and fellowship-trained reproductive endocrinologist. She received her BS in Biology from Brown University in 1984, MD from Duke University School of Medicine in 1989, and OB/GYN residency in 1992 and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility fellowship in 1995 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She stands as the Founding Partner and Medical Director of The Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science (IRMS) and the Vice President of Doctors for Fertility, a physician-led organization with the mission to educate and inform policy on reproductive rights. She is also an Associate Clinical Professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and St. George's University School of Medicine. My name is Dr. Jennifer Remnes and my undergraduate studies were completed at the University of Illinois at Champaign- Urbana. I double majored in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Psychology with a minor in Chemistry. Believe it or not, I was on a pre-med track throughout college and planned to apply to medical school. I quickly realized humans are gross, and I am way more passionate about animals. I was inducted into the Phi Zeta National Veterinary Honor Society in 2014. I graduated from St. George's University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2015 following completion of my clinical year at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. The wonderful small town of Chambana gifted me with endless country nights at Kams I'll never remember with friends I'll never forget. The small Spice Island of Grenada will forever remain a second home for me. I was fortunate enough to experience an authentic Caribbean culture, obtain a PADI scuba certification and bring home the world's most handsome souvenir—my heart dog and Papillon, Nutmeg. I was born and raised in Chicago, IL. Yes, Chicago, Chicago—not the burbs. I grew up a few miles west of Wrigley Field, and I'm absolutely ecstatic that I witnessed a Cubs World Series championship within my lifetime. Hey Chicago, what do you say? I live in the Windy City with my husband, Brad, and our Great Pyrenees rescue, Ophelia. Hi! My name is Dr. Jessica Trice! I graduated from Waubonsee Community College with an associate degree in Biological Sciences. I then received a bachelor's degree at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in Animal Science and Agricultural Consumer and Environmental Sciences. I graduated from Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine. My multifaceted career has led me to wear many various hats in veterinary medicine, including Chief of Staff and Medical Director. I have also served as a member of the Medical Advisory Board for the Midwest and led a Mentorship Program for veterinary students and new DVM graduates. I proudly collaborated with Banfield Pet Hospital and co-authored a children's book called "My Very, Very Busy Day." You may have also viewed one of my many television media segments featuring pet current events, health and preventative care. My long time passion of incorporating integrative medicine with conventional veterinary medicine finally became a reality when I received my certification of Veterinary Acupuncture along with Herbal Medicine through the Chi Institute. Additionally, I also earned certification as a Veterinary Chiropractor in the specialized area of Applied Kinesiology through the Health Pioneer Institute. Together, we can take a whole-pet approach to your pet's therapy. My collaborative techniques blend Western medicine with holistic approaches to treatment.

“We live in a capitalist society where money moves people: you pay to play,” states Dr. Val Torres in our latest episode of I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY, where he shares his Coming to America story that began with coming to terms with inequities he had to deal with to build a life here in the U.S. Val was able to fast-track his medical degree debt-free, graduating from St. Mary's College in Trinidad with an associate's degree equivalent in alignment with the country's British Education System, and being admitted to St. George's University School of Medicine in Grenada on a full-ride scholarship. After graduating with a medical doctorate, Val came to the U.S. and found it challenging to adjust to a U.S. Healthcare system that is for-profit and predatory if you don't have the financial means to gain access to quality care. “Contrary to popular belief, doctors and hospitals can't do much to fix it because it's the insurance companies that have all the power,” Val shares. Disgusted, in realizing that “your well is your health and vice versa”, he opted out of clinical medicine, in favor of entrepreneurship. As the President and CEO at Armada BusinessMD, Val operates in the financial services and business consulting space, serving clients in all 50 states. His focus is on reducing disparities in access to healthcare, housing, education, and economic opportunity via business development and financial education, serving as the de facto resource broker for the companies and organizations he collaborates with in eliminating the issue of inequitable access for people of color and immigrants like him. “People turn a blind eye to disparities in Healthcare, Housing, Education, and Economic Opportunities, mainly because they don't belong to the underserved groups that are impacted most. But the truth is, as a U.S. taxpayer, it does affect you,” Val adds.

She attended the University of Georgia for undergrad, where she started off majoring in poultry science and ended up with a degree in Biological Sciences. She has always been fascinated with cats, especially big ones. For most of her life, she hoped to work with large animals, but since she was 18, she worked in a feline specialty clinic and absolutely LOVED it. Brittney hopes to one day open an all-cat clinic of her own. Currently, she has one snowshoe cat named Toulouse who travels to and from Grenada with her.

Have you ever watched videos of cute babies online and then you start getting "baby fever"? And I believe that one of the monumental moments in our elementary education years is when we start learning about the actual process of this baby fever: "sexy time." As our guest described: "romantic" and "between sheets." However, there are instances when this activity does not result in the baby that the intending people wanted. According to the NIH, in the United States alone, approximately 9% of men and 11% of women of their reproductive age have infertility problems that imbue difficulties in the conception of a baby. Is there no longer hope for these partners to build the family that they have always dreamed of? Are there possible alternatives still available to them? COVID-19 has truly divided the nation into all aspects of society: physically, emotionally, politically, religiously...you name it! This was exacerbated by the roll-out of the mRNA vaccines by Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna during the end of 2020. The virus that was weakening the whole country seemed to become a bipartisan issue muddled by a myriad of misinformation and myths that flooded the internet. Because these erroneous information could cost someone's life, it was just right that we sought enlightenment and data from figures most reliable: evidence-based, up-to-date, and peer-reviewed science. There was no better expert to reach out to than Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Sanofi COVID-19 vaccine trials researcher, the current part of the new MOMI-Vax clinical trials, assistant clinical professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, medical contributor to the nation's biggest news channels, the youngest president of the New York Allergy and Asthma Society, double-board certified pediatric-adult Allergy and Immunology physician, AND most importantly...my birthday twin (Taurus unite): Dr. Purvi Parikh.Receiving her bachelor's degree in Political Science from Emory University in 2004, attaining her medical degree from St. George's University School of Medicine in 2008, completing her Internal Medicine residency in Cleveland Clinic Hospital in 2011, and further fulfilling an Allergy and Immunology fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in 2013, Dr. Parikh is currently practicing as an allergist and immunologist in New York, NY where she treats patients of all ages. It was, therefore, of no doubt that we reached out to her for all things COVID-19, the fresh roll-out of the mRNA and adenovirus vector vaccines during the recording time of Spring 2021, and immune response in general. From discussions about her medical journey to allergy talks about sensitivity vs. intolerance vs. allergy and the rarest allergy she has ever encountered, and to every topic under the sun about the COVID-19 vaccines (Pfizer vs. Moderna vs. Janssen vs. Astrazeneca, the mRNA technology, incidences of blood clots, malicious claims of infertility and spontaneous abortion, their long-term safety, and natural immunity), we dissect the common questions that the general public had and feared during its first roll-out. Dr. Parikh has a very clear goal: to hopefully save lives by relaying correct information...and this is what Friends of Franz is all about! This episode includes brief discussions around the topic of physician suicide.Livestream Air Date: April 7, 2021Dr. Purvi Parikh: IG @panipurvinyc, FB @purviparikhmd, & Twitter @purviparikhmdFriends of Franz: IG @friendsoffranzpodChristian Franz (Host): IG @chrsfranz & YT Christian Franz

After getting a 19 on the MCAT... twice, today's guest went through 2 rounds of rejections from US medical schools. In the one interview she did get from a US medical school, she was told there was no way she would pass STEP 1 with her low MCAT score. She was also told that and no school would accept her because she wouldn't match into residency. Despite the odds, in August 2016 she started school at St. George's University in the Caribbean. In July 2018, she obtained a 246 on the USMLE STEP 1 exam (take that suckers haha). In June 2020, she graduated from St. George's University School of Medicine in Grenada. Her story isn't over ... In July 2020, she went on to start internal medicine residency at a university program in Philadelphia, PA. As an IMG you are going to hear so many unfounded opinions about the path you have taken. You cannot allow that to define you. You are the most common valuable determinant of your outcome! As Dr. Kaitlyn McSurdy said "let your failures fuel your fire".
