Robbie Hearn founded Standing on Giants with Vincent Boon after the two met on the startup team at giffgaff. A disruptor in the UK telco market, giffgaff was founded in 2009 on the 'little bit radical' idea to have no call centres, no stores, just an online community. What followed was beyond Robbie and Vincent's wildest dreams. This community of customers would answer each other's support questions, refer new customers, solve technical issues and even generate marketing material. Inspired, they founded Standing on Giants to bring this innovative community-first model to other businesses. Standing on Giants now works with household names like Airbnb, O2, Lenovo, Heineken and Tesco Bank to build thriving online communities of customers, employees, and stakeholders. In this conversation Robbie discusses: A radical move in his childhood that built resilience His ambition to become more radical as he gets older (like Willie Nelson) How President Obama's election campaign inspired giffgaff The power of 'Customer Respect' How the giffgaff community saved the company by manufacturing and distributing 150,000 micro-sims What inspired him to co-found his own company His proudest moment as a company founder The B Corp movement and making Standing on Giants a 'different kind of business' Growing a company without taking external investment How he would shake up politics 'Leap and the net will appear': a mantra for turning your idea into a reality Robbie on linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robbie-hearn-0539313/ Rob on linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-warren/ Standing on Giants on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/standing-on-giants/ Want to appear? Welcome back to another episode of the Talking Classical Podcast. This week is Anti-Bullying Week. It’s a week organised by the Anti-Bullying Alliance every year since 2004 that aims to raise awareness of bullying among children and young people and to emphasise ways we can tackle it and respond to it positively. Over the last few years on Talking Classical, we’ve explored a range of issues that are affected by bullying such as mental health and racism. I felt that it was important to address these issues with regards to the classical music industry and the solutions artists, practitioners and senior staff have implemented. Last month, I spoke to distinguished British conductor, broadcaster and TV presenter Charles Hazlewood. In May 2020, Charles appeared as a castaway on the iconic Radio 4 programme Desert Island Discs, where he took the opportunity to talk openly about his childhood experiences. Following an unprecedented response after this appearance, he'll be hosting a special commission entitled Beethoven and Me, which will be shown on Sky Arts in December. This programme not only celebrates the 250th anniversary of the birth of Beethoven but is a deeply personal look at the life of this composer through the lens of one of his signature works, the 5th symphony, exploring how this famous work reveals Beethoven’s experiences such as child abuse, deafness and potential autism. In this podcast, Charles will be talking to us about this documentary, his appearance on Desert Island Discs and his own experiences of recovering from childhood trauma. He talks about his experiences of the lockdown period and recent governmental debates and perceptions surrounding the creative industries and the viability of freelance musicians' work. He also discusses the act of being vulnerable and open, and shares some encouraging and motivating advice for anyone who’s been through similar experiences. This podcast discusses themes that may be of a sensitive nature so if you are affected by any of the issues, please seek help or talk to someone - there are some links below for hotlines and organisations you can access for advice and support. Thanks so much to Charles for taking the time to talk to me amidst his busy schedule. Vincent Boon is a giant in the community space. A natural community leader, Vincent initially saw the power of community when hundreds of people began to show up to learn to play poker at his meetup. From there Vince went on to build pioneering communities in the gaming space, and create a fundamentally new model of community-powered business at GiffGaff.  In this episode, Vince talks about his early days in the community space, what it was like to develop the GiffGaff model and his work as Co-Founder of Standing on Giants. We learn about Vincen't new company, Giants Technology. The second half of the podcast is devoted to a discussion about his recent article "Six Key Principles to Building Healthy & Positive Communities"  Key Quotes: Learning About Virtual Communities from In-Person Communities "In my spare time, I set up the London poker meetup. That was to basically teach people the basics of playing poker. It started off with three other guys and eventually had about a hundred thousand people joining it. We were taking over complete pubs in London. Literally incredible and it was really fun. As I was doing this I was also the working on a (video) game. I said to the team "look guys, we have a whole bunch of fans out there that I'm sure would be love to see early versions of our games. It was so long ago that they'd never done this before. So I convinced the team to say look, let's just do a closed beta. Test and get our customers to test the games. We started off with a couple of hundred people eventually that grew to about 20,000 people testing this one game. We started a bit of a community as well. And these guys started building a lot off the leagues and the letters and newsletters and, you know, newspaper articles that could all be used within the game. So all of a sudden the game became a lot richer than it originally was intended. And, you know, when it launched, it was obviously an instant success because it already had a user base." Building GiffGaff With the Customer Community"We announced to the world "We're setting up this little MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator)and here is an idea of what we want to do. We want to run it with a community. We want to hear from people. We want to see what you guys have to say about what we're doing. And it started super simple. We were also being very open about the fact that it's just a couple of people here and we're just setting up this service. If you've got any ideas, let us know obviously. When we were launching, as we were starting and plenty of things went wrong and we would just talk about that and you put that out there. My view was always like, look, it's infinitely interesting.  Whatever it is that we're doing. That's why they're showing up." The Current View of Customer Experience At the moment I think customer experience is incredibly flat. I don't have any experience with a website and how I go through that. I understand the whole route and the need to make it easier for me to buy stuff. But it's not really an experience with the company. It's an experience of how I experienced that product. That's cool, but it's not an emotional experience. For me, an emotional experience happens on a basis where I actually am in contact with the company. And that's not at the moment I have a problem." There are not many marketers who can boast about having founded a major brand. But that’s what Gav Thompson did when he launched Giffgaff in 2009, which is just one significant stop-off in a career spanning almost 25 years. Not one to settle on a particular path, his professional journey to date has been anything but linear. Indeed, it is the very epitome of a zig-zag career, taking in some of the biggest names in agency world, telcos, startups and a stint as CMO of Paddy Power at the height of criticisms over its controversial - some might say distasteful - ad campaigns. In a wide-ranging interview Thompson discusses: Why hanging out in bars and shops is the route to true customer centricity. How far is too far when it comes to controversial ads. The cultural, branding and insight challenges of launching a startup. Why 'creativity versus data' is a false dichotomy. The route to brand success - a marriage of efficiency and effectiveness.

Question for tonights listener garden. I see there are whispers of bbm being released for android. Have you heard this? Any idea when Hi Gareth,   Just to explain..  I was with three for 3 consecutive contracts. The last one finished just this month, and you know how it is - you don't call them up in advance, they'll let you pay as much as they can, unless you want to upgrade. I didn't plan to upgrade, as there's no headsets at the moment that I would like. I own Desire HD with a GiffGaff sim in it (where I use around 8 GB of data a month for a 10er..) and my N97 that I took with the contract 2 years ago (on the launch date, silly me..)  So I called India up, telling them that's it, that I'd like to be taken down to the £10.00 a month rolling contract, until I see something that will be amazing enough for me to go for it. After a 30 minutes chat with Ranjeet or what ever his name was, I finally made him understand, that it makes no sense to try to convince me to go for something else.  My girlfriends contract was over as well, and as she is not capable of anything herself, relying on me with everything, I was the one on the phone again. She has a Nokia M86 and is happy with it. I intended to do the same for her as I did for myself. I called up 3, and after she confirmed her details, I started another battle..  What came out of it is what you see in the picture.. Not sure, if it's only for cases like me and my girlfriend, but it looks a decent enough deal to me.  I told him we're both using a lot of data, but both have giffgaff sim, but we use the contract phones as the main numbers for calling, and texting. He offered me a GB of data, and the Talk 500 plan for a year, but with the option to upgrade anytime. So if something comes to 3 in a month, I can go for it, no termination fee, they just switch me over to the new plan. You can see he added another GB on top as well, as I still wasn't happy, I have 5000 3 to 3 minutes, and there's a discount of £5.00 as well. So we'll be both paying 13 quid a month for 500 minutes or texts cross network, 2,5 GB of data, and 5000 3 to 3 minutes..   That's not bad me thinks.. Is that a bit of a bargain or what?  By the way, love the podcast, regular listener, a symbian to android convert, fan of the website and you guys. Actually met Mat and James on the Desire HD launch, maybe will have the chance to shake your hand as well once, if you guys do a readers meetup kind of thing.. hope you keep up the good work.. Cheers.. Jaro PS: I was actually the one recommending Beluga.. :D Hello, im thinking about buying a sasung galaxy s on contract. The contract im looking at is £25 a month and includes 1gb of internet. Im not sure if this would be enough, as id use my wifi for downloading apps but id use my mobile internet for facebook updates and twitter etc. Would this be enough if i checked it about once a day? We podcastees are bone idle! So, I thought I'd send you a few words of support (and constructive criticism).I listen to a lot of technology podcasts - I'm a gardener, with plenty of time to myself - and yours is without a doubt the best one covering the mobile market. You clearly know the devices down to their nuts and bolts and Andy adds a soupcon of eccentric geekiness and developer knowhow - I often don't know what he's talking about, but it sounds impressive.I would imagine that, at some time, you'd like to get a couple of advertisers on board and this is where the constructive criticism comes in. I'm a big fan of playground humour, but yours sometimes goes a bit far for the corporate suits. Animal sex and inflatable sex dolls might make them a little nervous about having their product appear on the same page, so to speak. Having said that, your edginess adds to the flavour of the podcast so you wouldn't want to lose it completely. I only say all this because I think you deserve to succeed and your content is certainly better than established podcasts like Dialed In and not far off the the quality of Twit.tv!Keep up the good work!Your committed listener (with or without the sex doll)Marc Bit shocked people aren't sending in tonnes of questions since you are the only UK podcast worth listening too. I'm really looking forward to the Windows Phone 7 announcements hopefully you'll be covering them soon but what is the deal with cut and paste?!?James is mad to have bought the San Francisco. I would like to see my google calendar alongside the corporate one but I can not seem to find an easy way.Google Sync seems at first try to do the job but rather than adding an additional calendar on the blackberry it seems to load all your google entries into your one BB calendar. BAD as this then syncs back up to the corporate one Merging the two.Any ideas, on my iPhone and my Galaxy this is simple stuff but Blackberry seem to make it hard.Keep up the great work guys.ThanksRuss I bought an iphone locked to O2. Love the show and the current line up. I must say it did take me a while to warm up to Andy.... I think this is only because I'm an ex Carphone Warehouse employee, and his bashing of them was difficult to hear. Especially when I gave excellent customer service and product knowledge being a phone geek. It maybe obvious, but not every store is the same..... Any who, I'm over that and now I know more about Andy and his back ground, I really do value his input into most conversations you guys have!Enough ass kissing.... on with my question.I think this one is best answered by Andy, but if any one else can offer an answer I'm all ears.I'm heading off on holiday to Turkey in August. Last holiday we had, we were in a villa where paid to have WiFi there, but that isn't an option to us where we are going. As we progress in this digital age, not to been connected to the digital world is horrid thought. Obviously I could roam on O2 (I'm an iPhone 4 owner) but since I don't have MUG tattooed on my head (and sleep on a bed of money) this really isn't going to be an option for me. There is 5 of us going. Me, the better half, her parents and her brother. 3 of use are iPhone users, and because of this I was thinking that the best solution for us would be some thing like a MiFi portable hotspot with a Turkish data SIM in it. What do you think guys? Would this be the best option?I set about trying to do some research and it seems like there is only two main network providers in Turkey. One is Vodafone. Navigating their website is tough. Even with Google translate. I think there is a good pre pay dongle you can get from them, but they don't seem to list any thing like a MiFi. I was planning to purchase an unlocked MiFi before I went away and get a SIM when I was over there. The question I have, is that how do I know the MiFi will support the Turkish Voda network settings??All seems a little confusing for me, and hard to gather information about foreign countries before you travel. Is there a website out there that offers more in depth advice about this type of question?I'm leaving it a little late because I leave on the 19th of August, but I'd love for any help you can offer, or maybe fellow listeners. Thanks very much for your time guys, and thank you again for the podcast you produce.David King Melayah how do i add people on to my whats app like my BB contacts and Iphone contacts??? In a nutshell, what makes GiffGaff different to any other network offering? What is your back ground? Are you a previous employee of one of the networks? If so,     a)what was your position there?   b)Why did you decide to set up giffgaff? How can GiffGaff offer better value than 02? But still running on the same 02 network: why choose O2 as the carrier? Is Giffgaff an O2 sponsored venture or are you completely independent?        a)if Independent, why choose O2 as the carrier?       b)can you switch to another network or are you under contract for so many years?       c) why would a network carrier allow you to use their network if they know you are going to offer a much better product than they do?(to demonstrate my point,  I see Virgin as a different model to TMobile, not better, just tailored to a different customer base. GiffGaff trounces O2 in every department which ever way you look at it 'unless' you want a contract subsidised handset - are they are probably one of the worst out there for that anyway? oh, and the reason I'm with o2 PAYG is to simply get the cheaper home broadband! Rarely use the sim!)            If O2 venture:        a)Why undercut themselves and generally make a much better network model rather than do it at O2?(at such cheap and competitive pricing, is GiffGaff sustainable? What number or subscribers to you have and whats the break even number? so far I have received more in payouts than I have paid out in topups for very little effort. Is this sustainable? ) When will international roaming be activated Does giffgaff have throttled data? I get 2.2mb on Vodafone and only 0.5mb on giffgaff.  My iphone 4 says i'm on the O2 network. My Dell Streak used to say Giffgaff..... Although I have nothing against O2 is this something Giffgaff can change? Will you allow tethering in the future? Why can't I buy more than one goody bag in a month? I needed to use my phone for an emergency the other day and used up all my minutes. Now i have to wait 2 weeks before my new goody bag starts. This means my Mum will not get hear weekly call! :O) Visual voicemail for iphone. Will giff gaff support it? Will Giffgaff introduce a £20.00 or £25.00 goodybag for more minutes? £15.00 to £35 is quite a jump. Will you allow me to buy 12 months worth of goodybags at 1/2 price? Why not? I had an idea that you could design a giffgaff wallpaper for your fans to use on their phones. This is a freebie idea to take back with you. Oh, and congratulations to being the only network to actually look up the definition of the word 'unlimited'. Do Giff Gaff have any plans to support BlackBerry in the future, bearing in mind that O2 do not support PAYG BB Services? - James there was an announcement that 02 and vodafone would be sharing cell towers, at the moment I can use vodafone but get no o2 signal at home which means no giffgaff, does he know anything about when it may happen?      * MINI SIM CARDS for Ipad/iphones (ANDY)      * SUPPORT TURTLE (ANDY) What phone do you use? Hi Guys, Feedback for you: Brilliant podcast, always makes me laugh, and sometimes informative! A question also if I may? Since getting my iPhone4 I have noticed that my data usage has shot up. On the 3gs I don’t think I used 500 meg in 6 months but with the 4 I hit over 800mb in a week! This is with no real difference in usage patterns as far as I can tell. The O2 tech support said it was because the cellular usage figure includes WiFi but I find that hard to believe. As of today, having reset the stats, it has recorded 190k downloaded on cellular data, but has not been outside of my home WiFi coverage! Have any of you noticed this? On the plus side, O2 say they cant see any huge data use, but I’m worried I will get a huge bill in a months time. David. PS. Andy, the Pre is still fine. Mainly an alarm clock but it gets an occasional outing as a phone and would still be my next choice after the iPhone.  I am having some trouble since apple released upgrade 4 for iphone 3gs.  I use to be able to go to my address book for location to set an appointment and now only some of my contact will work the way they use to and some the map vibrates and it will not transfer all data to location. Any ideas on what I can do? I have applied all resent updates from the itunes website. Thank You.  Amin Another Chris Hi guys, nice podcasting I listen to the 4 of you as I do my weekly cleaning. I love mobiles as much, if not more than you ... in fact i think i'm a bit obsessed. Keep going with the podcasts and keep the site news coming!! I have noticed until yesterday that the amount of news on your site has reduced to only updates every 3 days or so.. nice to see more news coming now. I thought you may be able to help with with an issue I have had ... maybe answer it on the podcast? or not? I can't be the only person with this issue though... Anyway just over 6 months ago I moved from O2 to Vodafone and ported my number to a 12 month contract. I did this and moved from a Iphone to a HD2... I don't remember having any issues with the HD2 although I didn't have it for long and generally use my phone for data rather than voice. Since then I moved back to an Iphone (still on voda) and noticed a problem. If I had a 3g connection and tried to make a call the call failed  9/10 times or may ring once then cut off. I thought it was probably the phone... and me being me moved to a Milestone (same issue)... then I moved to a Nexus One (same) then Iphone (still the same) .. then Nokia N900 and still had the same issue.... I called Vodafone and they said they changed some settings but it made no difference. I called again and they sent me a new sim card but it made no difference. I have now (thanks to Andy) cancelled my Vodafone contract early and moved to Giffgaff... I have ported my number. I thought this might sort the issue but its still happening.  I have now ruled out the phone.. I have tried a network change and i have gone through 3 sim cards.  The only thing that has stayed constant is my number.  So.. the question is... why when i try and make a call (and it seems to be when i'm on 3.5g hsdpa) do I get a network busy signal when i try to make a call and what should I say to the network when I call them? Hope you can help..  Chris. Just a short e-mail to let you know I enjoy your show.Things have changed a bit in the line-up over the last few years and I think its great to see the Modaco guys getting some discipline and regularity in their braodcasting lives.Anyway, I was wondering about this great offer from 3 in the UK: a MIFI device for 70-ish pound sterling. Does it really work with a rebel SIM? I want to use it on the t-mobile 3g network in Amsterdam, do you think it will work? How did you set this up for Edward?
