The founders of Toronto's Girls Run the 6ix Run Club join the show to discuss the importance of creating spaces for women to foster female friendships in the running world. Jill Amirault and Claire Milburn met through a shared desire to find more female friends to run with amidst a lack of opportunities in the run club scene. What began as a few women getting together to brave the early morning cold of December in Toronto has grown into a thriving community where all women are welcome and where running is only the beginning. On the show, Jill and Claire discuss the origins of Girls Run the 6ix, the power of running to build community, and the need for all-female spaces to create meaningful relationships. We also talk about what goes into taking a run club from idea to reality and some of the exciting ways that Girls Run the 6ix are transcending the sport to support their community in other facets of their lives. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit smokeempodcast.substack.com“Boys in crisis.” People write books about it. Melinda Gates just pledged $20 million to study it. Pundits make their bones rolling the phrase around in their mouths. But a crisis according to whom? Who profits when the American Psychological Society claims “traditional masculinity—marked by stoicism, competitiveness, dominance and aggression—is, on the whole, harmful"? And is telling boys they must change, with those changes often determined by women, just another recipe for resentment? To find out whether boys will be boys, regardless of how often they're told not be, we went to the source: 17-year-old Milo Pesca, son of the Great Mike Pesca, host of The Gist podcast and broadcaster/thinker extraordinaire. On the table:* Milo's voice is like a warm blanket* Did Ann Curry draw swastikas in the school bathroom?* Women and their endless talking* Sarah's favorite mispronunciation* Can anyone define “toxic masculinity”?* Is vulnerability overrated?* Babysitter Maggie might have been going through some things* “I know I'm just a white dude …”* The land acknowledgment-ing of gender* “Girls Run the World,” or do they?* Male role models!* Watching boys is kind of cool* If men don't like to talk, what's up with those three-hour podcasts?* Paw Patrol: Threat or menace?!Also, how lazy idioms affect our thinking, and — stop the presses — Nancy and Sarah disagree on the quality they want in a man. Plus: Four hot boxes!
What would American democracy look like in the hands of teenage girls? That is the question at the center of "Girls State," a new Apple TV+ documentary and the nationwide civic leadership program that it's named after. As participants, high school students are competitively selected into an immersive experiment in which they must build a mock government from the ground up, complete with municipal roles, branches, a governor, and a Supreme Court. The film takes us inside Missouri Girls State 2022, where hundreds of girls from across the state gather at Lindenwood University to reimagine what it means to govern and devise a better democracy. As citizens of Girls State, these young women take on fierce elections and the toughest political questions of today, on top of the trials of teenage-hood. Amid political polarization and set on the heels of the leaked Dobbs draft decision, the girls of "Girls State" challenge themselves and each other as they build pathways to the future that they want and make plans for how they're going to run it. Joining us today to talk about their Girls State experience and their plans to change the world are some of the girls from the film, Cecilia Bartin, Nisha Murali, and Tochi Ihekona.

She is the Founder and Executive Director of Maama Watali and Africa Trade Desk and the Vice President Canada with the Canada-Africa Chamber of Business. Susan is very involved in her community in Canada and Africa and the broader International African Diaspora through various community development initiatives on gender equality, environment, connectivity, food security, diversity, and inclusion. She is passionate about women and girls' leadership, well-being, and development. On this episode of Destination on the Left, Susan Namulindwa dives into her passion for creating trade and business opportunities for Africa and why aid without a relationship is ineffective. She shares why and how she started Girls Run Period, which is focused on ending period poverty in Africa, and how that led her to build world-changing collaborations. What You Will Learn in this Episode: Susan shares more about how Girls Run Period combines running with addressing period poverty in Africa, focusing on empowerment, collaboration, and sustainable tourism The importance of business relationships and trade partnerships for Africa's development Why Susan and her team entered the UNWTO Tourism Challenge, and how it helped them with aligning their idea with the goal of bringing tourism to small rural communities Some of the amazing events Girls Run Period has organized, including a cross country meet with thousands of attendees and the support of world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge Their future plans supported by Athletic Kenya and the local and national governments, that are helping them expand their impact and empower even more girls Founding Girls Run Period Susan shares her passion for creating trade and business opportunities for Africa and discusses how Girls Run Period aims to end period poverty through running events. She talks more about how she came up with the idea for creating an event that would get women excited about participating in a marathon in the Rift Valley and how her own enthusiasm for running led her to link the cause of empowering girls and women in Africa with funding local businesses to provide sanitary wear so girls don't miss out on crucial years of education. World Changing Collaborations Susan shares why collaboration lies at the heart of Girls Run Period's success. Through partnerships with running clubs, athletic organizations, schools, and health professionals, the program is able to create a network of support that extends beyond running. This collaborative approach ensures that girls receive not only the necessary supplies but also mentorship, health services, and educational opportunities. By working together, Girls Run Period is able to maximize its impact and create lasting change in the communities it serves. Promoting Sustainable Tourism Girls Run Period combines two powerful forces – running and tourism – to create a positive impact. Participants not only get to run in iconic destinations like Kenya's Rift Valley but also support the cause by paying fees and donations. This unique approach promotes sustainable tourism and helps generate funds for the initiative's important work. Susan discusses trade over aid, and why she is a strong advocate for trade partnerships that benefit both Africa and its global partners. By supporting local entrepreneurs who produce reusable sanitary pads, Girls Run Period empowers girls and women while contributing to environmental sustainability. This approach aligns with the sustainable development goals and showcases the trade and business opportunities available in Africa. Mediated Series - Part 3: Published in 2005, Mediated: How the Media Shapes Your World and the Way You Live in It, became Bridget's bible for understanding the changing media landscape and how it is affecting our society and behavior. Now she sits down with author Thomas de Zengotita for a multi-part series discussing the book chapter by chapter. In Part 3 Bridget and Thomas discuss how the intrinsic human desire for recognition and acknowledgement translates into seeking fame, when the notion of adolescence evolved in our society and how teenage girls essentially run the world, the use of the words "like" and "literally," what "dialectic" actually means and how it applies to celebrity culture and their audience, why the only heroes that can exist in a mediated world are the "everyday heroes," whether it's possible to be truly authentic anymore, the overuse of therapeutic language everywhere now, Thomas's Holocaust thought experiment, and why Bridget would be valuable to people in media studies.

"I saw that there was this lack of representation within this space. Even though I'm going it at a recreational level, I started to see the reactions and responses to people who were finding out that this is something I was actually doing. It is very normal for folks to just think, 'Oh you're in the sprinter category or you're you're more for short, fast distances or jumping' and that's the end of the road. Even my family and friends finding out that I am running these longer distances, my parents were even like, 'Oh my gosh. This is so wild and we're so excited to see you.' My little cousins were looking up to me and saying, 'Oh my God, Ameerah! This is so cool that you're doing this' and asking questions. For me, seeing that beginning to happen made me think there's something that's here. There's this sense of representation that's definitely lacking. Now that I have this opportunity to show up and be in this space, it's super important to stay there and continue moving forward. This is available to any and everybody...There's a lot of self-limiting beliefs but then we also have socioeconomic limitations that are set on certain groups of people. Speaking to this conversation and leaning into just showing up. I'm a huge advocate of just showing up. That's something that I always say. For me personally, it became this super important thing to just keep showing up and taking up space to a certain degree." Ameerah Omar is a self-development coach and meditation teacher but also the mindset coach for Adidas Runners and one of the first members of Girls Run NYC. In this episode, Ameerah shares some advice for how we can all go about getting in the right headspace in such weird times, the importance of a routine and taking inventory of your well-being at the moment. We dive into her upbringing, her introduction to sport and how she went from a multi-sport athlete in college to frequently running marathons. Ameerah shares some insights into her involvement and the mission of Girls Run NYC as one of the city's groups using running as service and helping others. We also continue the discussion of race and running with Ameerah and how she's been grappling with the news of Ahmaud Arbery's death. Josephine first started learning about performance psychology after competing in Ironman Melbourne in 2013. It was a really windy day with huge waves. Having only trained in a 20 m London pool, it was a shock. But the commentators words stayed with her and now influence how she works with her clients. He said: “you can’t control the conditions. I’ve been reminded more than ever in the past few months the power of women supporting women. There’s nothing else like it in this world. In honour of International Women’s Day tomorrow, March 8th 2019, I put together this exceptionally special episode featuring 5 different women, from various places spread out across the globe, all with vastly different life history and experiences. And yet - there’s a shared element and common threads that can be pulled together throughout all of the things you’re going to hear about today, because it’s really demonstrating how f*cking powerful women are when we actually support each other. I cried multiple times putting together this episode, because the entire experience just felt so powerful, and having this podcast and this platform continues to amaze me. It’s a absolute gift that I’m able to share women like this with you, that I have this voice on my tiny corner of the Internet where I get to let other women tell their stories. This episode is to remind you of the power of women, of friendship, and of how strong we are when we join hands with one another to lift each other up. I want you to walk away from this episode inspired to do something else to lift up another woman, because even the smallest gesture could change someone’s life. You never know what someone is going through and how much it might mean to them. THE QUESTIONS I asked 5 women to answer the questions below, and the results are stunningly touching and beautiful. Tell us about a time when another woman (or group of women) made you feel seen, supported, loved and heard. Tell us about a time when YOU made another woman (or group of women) feel seen, supported, loved and heard. This second question is a little tougher by design. I encouraged the ladies to do a little humble bragging here and I want you to do the same, because too often as women we are quiet about our successes, apologetic about our wins, and allow our kindness to go unseen. I really asked a lot of the ladies featured today to dig deep here and brag a little, even if it felt uncomfortable, because my hope is that it will encourage other women to do more things to support others in their own lives! At the end of the episode I give my own answers to these questions as well. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did, and use this as a reason to celebrate women every day, not just on the one day a year dedicated to women internationally. For full introductions on all of the women you'll be hearing from today, check out the show notes here! Please share this episode with another woman in your life who needs some inspiration and to listen to a beautiful message today. Women have always known way before Beyonce’s song, “Girls (Run the World)”, that we possess a lot of power and can hold our own but it isn’t just enough to say that especially in male dominated industries like media and entertainment. The backbiting, the glass ceiling, challenges that women face opposed to men, and even what defines the characteristics of the New Age Woman are constantly being debated. In celebration of Women’s History Month, my guests join me tonight to discuss their views on powerhouse women in media, women that have inspired them in their fields, and how their experiences shaped their views on supporting other women. Plus I’ll run down the latest headlines in pop culture news with my friend/budding comedian @NormmyNorm. Subscribe to our free podcast on iTunes.
