In this episode of "The First Day from the Fund Raising School," host Bill Stanczykiewicz, Ed.D. discusses the key findings of the 2024 Giving USA report with Josh Birkholz, CEO of BWF and Board Chair of the Giving USA Foundation. The conversation kicks off with the staggering headline figure—$557 billion in charitable donations, the highest ever. Adjusted for inflation, however, most donation sources show a decline, except for bequests. Birkholz clarifies that, unlike the stock market, these donations are "new gifts" each year, underscoring the sector's continued resilience despite economic pressures like inflation. Inflation plays a big role in the analysis of charitable giving, affecting both donor behavior and the perceived value of contributions. While everyday donors may feel the pinch, high-net-worth individuals continue to contribute significantly, often through structured vehicles like foundations and donor-advised funds (DAFs). Birkholz also emphasizes that giving has remained around 2% of the U.S. GDP, a consistent trend through economic highs and lows, signaling the cultural value Americans place on philanthropy. A key topic of discussion is how charitable giving has evolved, especially with the rise of DAFs and other structured mechanisms that may distort perceptions of individual giving. Birkholz highlights that while mega-donors like Mackenzie Scott and Michael Bloomberg continue to make headlines, the ultra-high net worth segment saw fewer mega-gifts this year. However, he stresses that generosity remains robust, even if the methods of giving are changing, with more people opting for innovative ways to contribute. The episode closes on a thoughtful note about the broader definition of generosity. Beyond the Giving USA data, Birkholz reminds us that acts of kindness, such as tipping generously or supporting GoFundMe campaigns, also reflect the American spirit of giving. Stanczykiewicz encourages nonprofits to adjust their fundraising strategies by factoring inflation into their goals, while continuing to connect with donors at all levels, reinforcing the joy and purpose behind charitable giving.

According the Giving USA 2024: Annual Report on Philanthropy, individuals in the United States gave over $374 billion to charity in 2023. Beyond the intrinsic reward of helping others, charitable giving also offers substantial tax benefits if it is approached strategically. While most individuals choose to simply give to charity via cash, check, or credit card, these options are typically the least tax efficient. In this month's podcast we are discussing how various charitable giving strategies such as giving appreciated stock, bunching charitable contributions, making qualified charitable distributions, and utilizing the North Dakota qualified endowment tax credit can significantly increase the tax savings individuals receive from their charitable gifts. If you are interested in learning more about tax-smart ways of giving to charity, we think you'll enjoy this episode. Thanks for listening! At long last, Giving USA released its philanthropic giving data for 2023. Today, we eagerly dive into the numbers and more importantly, what they mean for non-profits and those who work in support of their missions. Philanthropic giving in the United States reached approximately $557 billion- an increase in pure dollars, but how does that stack up when adjusted for inflation? Uncover what the numbers really mean in this special episode of Around with Randall.
In this episode of the First Day Podcast, host Bill Stanczykiewicz, Ed.D. is joined by Anna Pruitt, Managing Editor for Giving USA and Adjunct Faculty Member from the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. They discuss the 2023 findings from the Giving USA report. The total charitable giving in the United States reached a record high of $557 billion in current dollars, showcasing a 2% increase from the previous year. However, when adjusted for inflation, there was a slight decline, highlighting the impact of economic factors on philanthropic trends. The breakdown of charitable sources revealed a significant milestone as foundations surpassed $100 billion in donations for the second consecutive year, representing a steady increase in their share of total giving. Despite this growth, individual giving, which remains the largest segment at $374 billion, saw fluctuations influenced by economic conditions and personal income levels. Corporate giving also showed resilience, closely tied to GDP growth and corporate profits, although it did not keep pace with inflation-adjusted terms. Among the nine sub-sectors of charitable recipients, seven sectors experienced growth even after adjusting for inflation, with notable increases in areas linked to stock market performance and high-net-worth giving. Looking back at multi-year trends, the data indicated that charitable giving in 2023 surpassed pre-pandemic levels, reflecting ongoing support despite global uncertainties. The episode underscored the importance of strategic fundraising planning based on these insights, emphasizing the role of Giving USA data in guiding nonprofit strategies for donor engagement and sustainability.
The state of charitable giving has a profound impact on hundreds of nonprofit organizations throughout Central Ohio, ranging from mighty arts, healthcare, and higher education institutions to local civic clubs and direct service providers. Trends in giving affect all of them — from the decline of giving among “everyday households,” increasing dependence on high-net-worth donors, trends in corporate giving, and the rise of donor advised funds, this dynamic sector represents more than 12% of Ohio's workforce – about as many as are employed in manufacturing. Following the June 25 release of Giving USA's annual report, we host a landmark conversation diving into the state and future of charitable giving. Featuring: Erika Gable, President, Association of Fundraising Professionals, Central Ohio Chapter Rachel Lustig, CEO, Lutheran Social Services Dr. Una Osili, Associate Dean for Research and International Programs, Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, who also provides opening remarks. Giving USA's 2023 report on Charitable Giving, a cornerstone in tracking philanthropic trends, notably observed a 10.5% drop in giving year-over-year in 2022. While this data provides valuable insights, it's crucial to consider its alignment with the experiences of fundraising professionals and the true reflection of current giving trends. In this episode of the Go Beyond Fundraising podcast, our Chief Strategy Officer Trent Ricker engages in a thought-provoking discussion with Jeffrey Cain, who authored a series of compelling articles challenging Giving USA's perspective.
In the latest episode of the First Day Podcast, host Bill Stanczykiewicz unpacks the highlights from the Giving USA 2023 report, recent data on charitable giving, and its implications for your nonprofit's fundraising strategy. Bill addresses the anxieties and concerns that have emerged in the philanthropic community due to this report's headline feature—a decline in charitable giving. This decline, the fourth in 40 years, rings alarm bells, especially when inflation-adjusted numbers show nearly an 11% drop. Bill encourages nonprofits not to view this as a reason to panic but rather an opportunity to reevaluate their strategies. The episode offers invaluable insights for nonprofit organizations, emphasizing the importance of responsible budgeting practices, maintaining strong fundraising fundamentals, and engaging your board as donors and fundraisers. Bill also underscores the significance of crafting a compelling case for support and nurturing donor relationships.

Rasheeda Childress is the senior editor for fundraising at the Chronicle of Philanthropy and Emily Haynes is a senior reporter at the Chronicle of Philanthropy. They recently authored a review of findings from the Giving USA 2022 report. (infographic summary here.) Emily and Rasheeda join host Steve Boland to talk about the early learnings from the 2022 Giving USA numbers. International giving is up - even in inflation-adjusted terms - but many other sectors are down both in real terms and in inflation-adjusted dollars. The value of major donors may be shifting as potential opens up for smaller- and medium-sized donations. Giving to foundations and donor-advised funds impacts the investments those tools are making in charities. Rasheeda and Emily also discuss the potential impacts of non-charitable giving as tax deductions have become less important to more donors due to the 2018 changes in standard deductions.
At least 21 people were shot, one of them fatally, at a Juneteenth celebration in gun-controlled Illinois on Sunday morning around 12:30 a.m. Charitable giving in the United States declined in 2022 — only the third time in four decades that donations did not increase year over year — according to the Giving USA report released Tuesday.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Curious about how much fundraising, donations, and other aspects of the nonprofit sector have changed since 2021? We've got a special update for you—a sneak peek from Giving USA's 2021 report. Each year Giving USA (a public service initiative of The Giving Institute) conducts research on the nonprofit sector in the U.S. The full report will be released on July 12th, but they published a preview featuring some of their top-level findings from last year. In this episode, you'll hear Kimberly O'Donnell share her biggest takeaways and “aha” moments while helping dissect the data to better inform your nonprofit decisions moving forward.
We constantly hear that if you don't have a fundraising board, you won't be able to raise funds as an organization. I don't believe that! In fact, I've had a lot of fundraising success without board fundraising. I know - call all the “gurus” and report this sacrilegious statement! How do we build a board that is all the things we require in leadership (subject matter experts, lived experience, community members) AND get them to love and embrace fundraising? In this episode of The Small Nonprofit Podcast, we talk to Elizabeth Abel, about how to motivate board members to fundraise. Elizabeth is the Senior Vice President at CCS Fundraising, a global fundraising consulting firm for nonprofits and an instructor at the University of Pennsylvania. She has designed, advised, and directed development initiatives and capital campaigns that have collectively raised nearly half a billion dollars, positively impacting tens of thousands of lives.Myths that Elizabeth wants us to walk away from:Board members can't be involved in fundraising: Board members can be one of the greatest assets to any nonprofit's fundraising efforts because they champion your mission, engage their networks and provide financial support. Board members should focus on major gifts: You need to figure out how your board members want to be involved in fundraising, find out what are their strengths? And then how can you create that synergy that allows them to be fantastic multipliers and fundraising ambassadors?Corporate giving is better than individual giving: According to Giving USA 2021: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for the Year 2020, individuals drove 69% of total giving in the US, which was about $324 billion. Corporations are estimated to have declined by 6.1% in 2020 to only about 17 billion. So there is a huge gap between where people think corporations are and where they are relative to individuals. Elizabeth's Tips on Engaging Board Members to FundraiseFundraising Ambassadors. They bring a diverse set of experiences and skills and talents. They are multipliers of all that you're doing programmatically, operationally, and of course your philanthropy.Recruiting and Engaging Boards. Many people just don't necessarily know what's expected of them so you can begin with setting expectations and educating board members in their role in fundraising. Best practices. When considering how our board members can support our fundraising efforts, we want to prioritize relationship building. Elizabeth uses small events to engage and connect with donors as an example.
