In 2017, Award-winning Washington Post columnist, Steven Petrow experienced one of the worst years of his life. He lost both his parents, separated from his husband, and learned that his sister had meta-static cancer.  He began to question: how can one find joy during incredibly difficult times?  He discovered that joy is not only around us, but within us.  He examines this and so much more in his book THE JOY YOU MAKE: Find the Silver Linings--Even on Your Darkest Days, released this September.  He explores the many expressions of joy and shows readers how to find, cultivate, and share it. Combining his personal experiences with research and expert interviews, Petrow asks (and answers) the question: “What if there was a way to find the joy in everything?” In today's episode, we discuss how the connection between joy and grief are inseparable, and Steven offers  practical, prescriptive advice to find the joy around us. 1983 ist das Jahr, in dem der Kalte Krieg seinen Gipfel erreicht hat. Was tun? Ever look at the habits or behaviors of your parents and grandparents and think, "I'll never do that!" Sure you have. But Steven Petrow kept copious notes about all the things he'd never do...and then wrote a book about it.  Yes, it's funny. But it's also touching and enlightening as Petrow takes us through the basics ("I won't color my hair!") and then moves us gracefully into a deeper understanding of what it means to grow older. Petrow watched his own parents as they aged (and passed) leading to a profound sensitivity to the aging and dying process. Steven Petrow is an award-winning journalist and book author who is best known for his Washington Post and New York Times essays on aging, health, and civility. He's also an opinion columnist for USA Today, where he writes about civil discourse and manners. Steven's 2019 TED Talk has been viewed nearly two million times and translated into 16 languages. Stupid Things I Won't Do When I Get Old was published in 2021 and named as one of the New York Times' “favorite” books of the year (among other accolades). He is the author of five other books and is a much sought after public speaker. You're likely to hear him when you stream NPR or one of your favorite  —  or least favorite  —  TV networks.  Steven Petrow and this book may just change the way you feel about aging -- and the always difficult process of watching your parents age. We loved this book (and Steven) and so will you, Sisters.

Hank Hanegraaff, president of the Christian Research Institute and host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, reflects on an opinion piece in USA Today by Steven Petrow, titled, “Stop Gloating When Anti-vaxxers Die of COVID-19. It's Tragic” (December 20, 2021, 7A). The piece centers on Marcus Lamb, head of Daystar Television Network, who died of COVID-19 on November 30. We are not to practice the uncivilized, unchristian ethic of dancing on someone's grave. Unfortunately, Petrow also talks about “ineffective” means of combatting COVID-19, and one of those means that he cites is prayer. In reality, however, prayer is the most effective thing that we can do as Christians because there is no doubt that God exists—“the heavens declare the glory of God” (Psalm 19:1)—and that Christ, the eternal Son of God, “became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). When we pray to Him, God responds. He answers prayer. As St. John wrote, “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him” (1 John 5:14–15 ESV). And St. James declared, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (James 5:16 NIV). Mike and I discuss deconstruction, contemplation, Hell, etc. So, not too much.  Mike works with the Center for Action Contemplaton, which was founded by Richard Rohr and offers lot of good resources for deconstructing evangelicals, including Richards daily meditations. Mike can be heard on the Learning How to See podcast with Brian McLaren, and the Cinemartyr podcast, and works as a spiritual director and also teaches with the Guild For Spiritual Guidance. Note: Even PhDs make mistakes. At 22:30 Mike states that Justin Martyr quoted Origen, where Origen quoted Justin Martyr. Oh, Mike.  For the record Mike did catch the mistake and would really like it if you forgave him.

Do or do not podcast , there is no try. This week on the Reel Debaters we switched gears for a minute. Instead of the debate format we’ve been giving you we decided to have a fire side conversation (sans fire) in honour of Star Wars and May the 4th be with you weekend. This is clearly a topic that has been argued over and over and over again so we tossed some of the more commonly known topics (who shot first, Han or Greedo?) out there to give our take on them as well as ones that are more current with where Star Wars is today (Can Disney make it work now that movies are on hold)?  In the living room is Martin “these aren’t the droids you’re looking for” Navarro, Steve “May the force be with you” Taylor and Micheal “do or do not there is no try” Petrow. Yes I'd come across various brands through endless Google searches and recommendations from friends but I'd always forget who they were and struggle to find them again. What I loved about MAMOQ was that all these brands would be in one place - making it easier for the consumer to access variety and style. In this podcast we discuss:- The challenge with fast, throw-away fashion and the need for educating the consumer- Considering the entire life-cycle of fashion and circular economy models- How we can consider the conditions and ethics under which our clothes are made- How a road trip inspired the idea for MAMOQ- The values and ethos that underpin the MAMOQ brand- Learning patience as a key skill for being an entrepreneur- The importance of an external support network

He's got tips and hints to live your best gay life, including subjects as diverse as watching porn on planes, how long you should keep a dead partner's Facebook page active, the art of resifting after the holidays, and how to politely decline sexual advances. We love our chats with Steven and we think you just might learn something. Is that so bad? Check out Steven's website and consider getting his great new book, Steven Petrow's Complete Gay & Lesbian Manners: The Definitive Guide to LGBT Life. And to top it off, we have a very special track for you this week. It's DJ EARWORM's United State of Pop 2011 (World Go Boom) mashup track. You can learn more about his great music mixes at his website or on Facebook. Dale & Scott also have the low-down on: Lady Gaga's new Stuck on Fuckin' You track; Funny things friends said online this week; Steven Tyler topless in Hawaii; The Real Housewives of Beverly Hill's Kyle Richards' new book; Delaware & Hawaii now allow same-sex civil unions; Skater Johnny Weir gets hitched; PR hottie Ricky Martin may get married in New York City this month; We can expect more Ab Fab in 2013; Elton John selects his pick to play him in bio pic; Katy Perry gets dumped; and, Steven J. Walker's Superman snuggie; and, Dale & Scott want to remake a television classic with a gay twist...Hee Haw!
