This episode of the podcast is a recording of the lecture that Billy Schenck gave to collectors and friends at the Maynard Dixon and Native American Art Museum in early February 2026. The lecture centered around Schenck's prints and the many types of works he's reproduced over the past 55 years. Billy also discusses his iconic career, going into depth about his contemporaries and how he has been influenced by the ever changing cast of artists in his life. The lecture serves as the end point in a trilogy of podcasts filmed over the last 3 years. These three episodes of the podcast revolved his hugely successful 55-Year Retrospective exhibit and sale that opened at Medicine Man Gallery in Tucson, AZ on February 6th, 2026.Billy Schenck is a pioneer in the pop-western art movement and we are extremely grateful to have hosted such an important show. His work is on display in dozens of museums across the country, and will someday be housed in his own museum near Santa Fe, New Mexico. This lecture was not only educational, but very entertaining and I'm glad we were able to record it. This is part 1 of the recording of the invited inaugural Feast Day Of Saint Thomas lecture given at Mount Angel Abbey and Seminary. The full recording includes my lecture, Thomas Aquinas, Multiple Thomisms, and Christian Philosophy, a response by associate dean and professor Justin Shaun Coyle, and my answers to his and others' questions. Thomas Aquinas' works, thought, and approach have been viewed at times as an exemplar for Christian philosophy by many. His influence in Catholic circles in some times was massive and practically unavoidable, while in others Thomism was marginalized. In this talk, I focus on one period in which attentive engagement with Thomas Aquinas' thought, taking form as various and often rival Thomisms, was at a peak, an era centered by the 1930s Christian philosophy debates. I outline a narrative that starts with the Thomist revival in the late 19th century, discusses some key positions staked out during the modernist crisis and the 1930s debates, and takes us up to our own times. I bring the lecture to a close by providing a few suggestions for productively engaging, interpreting, and incorporating the insights and spirit of Saint Thomas. The full recording includes my lecture, Thomas Aquinas, Multiple Thomisms, and Christian Philosophy, a response by associate dean and professor Justin Shaun Coyle, and my answers to his and others' questions. Thomas Aquinas' works, thought, and approach have been viewed at times as an exemplar for Christian philosophy by many. His influence in Catholic circles in some times was massive and practically unavoidable, while in others Thomism was marginalized. In this talk, I focus on one period in which attentive engagement with Thomas Aquinas' thought, taking form as various and often rival Thomisms, was at a peak, an era centered by the 1930s Christian philosophy debates. I outline a narrative that starts with the Thomist revival in the late 19th century, discusses some key positions staked out during the modernist crisis and the 1930s debates, and takes us up to our own times. I bring the lecture to a close by providing a few suggestions for productively engaging, interpreting, and incorporating the insights and spirit of Saint Thomas. In today's episode from the Vault, we revisit Nadine Gordimer's James Lecture on the political landscape of South Africa, presented at the New York Institute for the Humanities on October 14, 1982. In 1982, resistance to South Africa's apartheid was growing increasingly militant, and the state's brutal repression heightened this tension. In her lecture, Gordimer speaks directly to this political landscape, describing the period as an “interregnum." She discusses the crisis of white identity in South Africa, the relationship between art and politics, the urgency for an alternative political left working toward what she calls a democracy without economic and military terror. This lecture was the basis of Gordimer's essay “Living in the Interregnum,” published in the New York Review of Books in January of 1983. Nadine Gordimer was a South African writer and political activist. She authored fifteen novels, including The Conversationalist, Burger's Daughter and July's People, over two hundred short stories, and several volumes of essays. She was awarded the Booker prize for the Conversationalist in 1974 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1991. She died in 2014 at the age of 90 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
