Une pierre de lecture est un outil médiéval aujourd'hui presque oublié, mais qui fut essentiel dans les universités et les monastères. Il s'agit d'un petit bloc de pierre lisse et lourd, utilisé pour maintenir les manuscrits ouverts, les stabiliser sur une table et parfois les surélever pour faciliter la lecture à la lumière naturelle. Dans un monde où les livres étaient rares, en parchemin rigide et très épais, ces pierres permettaient aux lecteurs — étudiants, moines, copistes — de travailler plus longtemps sans abîmer les textes. Elles sont donc parmi les objets les plus concrets et les plus intimes du travail intellectuel médiéval.C'est ce qui rend la découverte réalisée sous le Hertford College, à Oxford, absolument exceptionnelle. Depuis 2024, les archéologues d'Oxford Archaeology fouillent les sous-sols de ce collège historique. Ils y ont mis au jour un ensemble d'une richesse inattendue : anciennes salles d'étude, fragments de manuscrits et objets liés à la vie savante… mais surtout une pierre de lecture parfaitement conservée, un fait rarissime.Pourquoi cet objet attire-t-il autant l'attention des chercheurs ? D'abord parce que très peu de pierres de lecture médiévales sont parvenues jusqu'à nous. Ces outils du quotidien, manipulés pendant des siècles, ont souvent été brisés, réutilisés comme simples cailloux ou perdus lors des réaménagements urbains. En retrouver une intacte, dans son contexte d'usage, relève presque du miracle archéologique.Ensuite, cette pierre nous ouvre une fenêtre directe sur les pratiques d'apprentissage du Moyen Âge. Le site du Hertford College est situé dans l'un des berceaux historiques de l'enseignement universitaire en Europe. Découvrir un outil de lecture sur le lieu même où les premiers étudiants médiévaux lisaient, prenaient des notes et débattaient, permet de comprendre comment ils travaillaient concrètement : comment ils manipulaient des livres parfois immenses, comment ils organisaient leur espace d'étude, comment ils géraient la pénombre des salles avant l'électricité.La trouvaille est d'autant plus remarquable qu'elle s'inscrit dans un ensemble cohérent : la pierre de lecture a été retrouvée entourée de manuscrits, d'objets d'écriture, de sols médiévaux et d'anciens murs de salles d'étude. Cette combinaison constitue une véritable capsule temporelle pédagogique, extrêmement rare en archéologie, où l'on peut analyser non seulement un objet, mais tout un environnement intellectuel.Enfin, pour une université comme Oxford, riche de près d'un millénaire d'histoire, cette pierre revêt une dimension symbolique puissante. The 1920 General Election: The League and Campaign Oratory — David Pietrusza — Harding proved to be a surprisingly effective orator, earning substantial speaking fees on the Chautauqua lecture circuit despite his reputation for carefully evasive rhetoric. Following his meeting with the infirm Wilson, Cox committed unreservedly to supporting the League of Nations, a political miscalculation that proved electorally catastrophic. Wilson's documented inability to negotiate or tolerate substantive opposition represented a fundamental character flaw that prevented compromise on League ratification. "For reasons I can't fathom when I heard this sound file I instantly thought of Moondog. So this is my attempt at a Moondog type composition - almost mathematical in approach. I am thrilled to introduce a significant new segment for the Origins Podcast. We are producing a fully fledged 12-part series titled “A Dozen Lessons on Physics and Reality.” Over the coming months, we will release these lectures to provide a comprehensive guide to how physicists think about the world. I'm particularly excited to share the wonder and insights that are often lost in standard textbook descriptions, while giving more detail than one might obtain in a standard 1 hour physics lecture. These will be based on lectures I have given to non-scientists at institutions I have taught, ranging from Yale University to The New College of Humanities in London.We begin with Lecture 1: A Tour of the Universe.To understand the cosmos, we must abandon the linear scales of human experience. In this opening lecture, I utilize the mathematical tool of “powers of ten” to map the true playing field of physics. This tour is about perspective. It reveals how the universe operates on scales of space and time that are vastly different from our daily lives, ranging from the subatomic scales to the cosmic microwave background. It is a journey that highlights our cosmic insignificance while simultaneously celebrating the power of science to explore our origins and to change our perspective of our place in the cosmos.
