Since we last met Toby made another trip to Iceland, this time to give a talk at the inaugural meeting of a new free speech society. The post trip discussion on Icelandic cuisine, well, that's a different story. The news of the week prompts a question, "Do we need a New Enlightenment to tackle the hijacking of science by woke leftists?" Plus we tackle the Duke of Sussex's extraordinarily misjudged admission that he killed 25 Taliban fighters, whether the arrest of Andrew Tate is an elaborate psy op, and the riot in the Brazilian capital and what that is likely to be blamed on. In Culture Corner, The English, Season 2 of Slow Horses, Oblomov (Ivan Goncharov, 1859) and Hell's March by Taylor Anderson. James takes enough time off from gathering wood to burn in his Rayburn cast iron stove (so he and his family won't freeze to death when the World Economic Forum cuts off the power this winter) to let Toby read out an extract from ‘An Odd Couple For Our Odd Times', a glowing article about our little show in The National Review (which, unfortunately is behind their paywall) and they both agree with the author that the debate between #TeamToby and #TeamJames is “the most relevant ongoing conversation on planet Earth.” Toby then tells James about a new report from the Conservative Way Forward group documenting the enormous sums the British Government spends on politically motivated campaigns every year; they briefly discuss Harry and Meghan's Netflix documentary series, focusing on Harry's slightly Plebeian accent. In Culture Corner, Toby urges people to stick with Andor, the only good Star Wars TV spin-off and sings the praises of the action scenes in Gangs of London, while James enthuses about his latest discover, Hot Skull, a Turkish series about a world plunged into chaos by a pandemic; and, finally, Toby confesses to having given up on Barry Lyndon and started listening to Hell's March, the second book in Taylor Anderson's Artilleryman series. James and Toby spend more time on the road than Hope and Crosby but unfortunately it’s not together. This week we’re all about James’s return to grey old England after his glorious week in Croatia and Toby’s trip to Scotland (in which he fails, spectacularly, to shoot a deer). After the personal preliminaries we touch on the redaction of the emails from Sir Patrick Vallance (the UK’s version of Anthony Fauci) about the Wuhan lab leak, and a discussion of who is more like Jimmy Saville – Toby or James (Hint: Neither one.) In Culture Corner it’s book week with Purgatory’s Shore by Taylor Anderson and The Young Lions by Irwin Shaw (movie trailer here). Next week: A Bond special. This week’s opening sound is The Sun Travel Editor Lisa Minot on UK travel changes courtesy of GBNews.

Taylor Anderson is, to put it bluntly, a friend of the Coffee in Space podcast. Not only have I enjoyed every single interaction I've had with him, but he's also lent me his audience and his pull. He's taught me so very much about alternate history and speculative fiction. More than that, he's taught me how to fall in love with a character. And so many people have fallen in love with Taylor's Characters. If you get nothing else from this interview, I hope you've understand a touch of what makes Taylor such a gifted writer. His worldbuilding, of course, is on point. It has to be because of the alternate world and history in which he writes. But it's more than just worldbuilding. It's characters we want to love. Taylor nails it.Enjoy this episode and then the next one, which is ten more minutes with Taylor. I think you'll be happy you did. Recorded live from Clubhouse on Monday I am joined by Ljay Geist, Greg Barnes, and Taylor Anderson. We talk about the importance making your small circle your priority at work and at home and what happens when we lose that focus.
There was plenty of hoopla when Paige Bueckers committed to UConn, but no matter how many points and awards she accumulates, she won't be the first Hopkins graduate to attend that school, because Taylor Anderson got there first. Anderson was a dual-sport sensation at Hopkins in basketball and track and still holds the Minnesota state record for the fastest 100m women's race, a feat that helped her get her first car. She went to UConn on a track and field scholarship, and she's hoping to earn a spot on the United States Olympic Team for the summer games in Tokyo. Anderson also knows a thing or two about dynasties, being a part of one with Hopkins girls basketball and a good friend of the UConn women's basketball athletes responsible for their four straight national titles. All of that and more are discussed in this podcast! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tsbtelevision/support

Without looking it up, can you describe the flag of your city? For most people, the answer is probably “no;” and if you live in Salt Lake City, it probably should be “no.” Adopted in 2006 by the Salt Lake City Council, the flag features a central logo of a black city skyline in front of green, snow-topped mountains and a blue sky, with the words “Salt Lake City” printed in white. Two wide bars of a darker green and blue split the background in half horizontally. In some cities, like Chicago or Washington, D.C., the flag is a source of civic pride, hung from homes and business and emblazoned on clothing and merchandise. But Salt Lake City’s flag is largely unknown to the general public, and some designers and flag experts say the time is ripe for a redo. On this week’s episode of “Trib Talk,” former Tribune reporter Taylor Anderson and Utah graphic designer Jorrien Peterson join Benjamin Wood to discuss the importance and power of a well-designed city flag and what can be done to improve Salt Lake City’s municipal imagery. And as a special addition to this week’s episode, “Trib Talk” is hosting a flag-design contest for its listeners. Email your idea for a better Salt Lake City flag to tribtalk@sltrib.com with “flag contest” in the subject line by Friday, September 14. Finalists will be selected by the “Trib Talk” team and voted on by our followers and friends on twitter. The creator of the winning design will receive a Salt Lake Tribune coffee mug, will be featured as the background image of the @TribTalk twitter account during the month of October and, who knows, may one day see their flag on top of the City and County Building in Salt Lake City. For more information on this topic, the “Trib Talk” team recommends the excellent 2015 TED talk on flag design by Roman Mars, host of the “99% Invisible” podcast. “Trib Talk” is produced by Sara Weber with additional editing by Dan Harrie. Comments and feedback can be sent to tribtalk@sltrib.com, or to @bjaminwood or @tribtalk on Twitter. Click here to listen now. Listeners can also subscribe to “Trib Talk” for free on SoundCloud, iTunes and Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher and other major podcast platforms.

The military shows up in a lot of sci-fi and fantasy stories but the subgenre of military SF depicts soldiers holding their own in fantastical situations without needing superheroes to save the day. Many military SF authors have served in the armed forces and bring a sense of verisimilitude to depicting their experiences, even if the stories are about futuristic high-tech or alien invasions. I talk with authors Myke Cole, Linda Nagata and Taylor Anderson about whether military SF has a mission beyond entertainment. Learn more about your ad choices. Live radio is always fun and can be filled with surprises. I was surprised this week when my original guest was given the wrong date, by me and he thought he was on on Nov. 5 instead of Nov.1! While I was waiting to discover this and because I was live on the radio I had to go with it and do a show. What happened over the next hour of the show was pretty amazing to me. I got to have a candid talk with my show producer who, in his other life, is a touring musician, entrepreneur, radio personality and in his former life worked at Disney and had over 117 employees who reported to him. Lots of great questions on this show to shake things up and a frank discussion of letting employees go, what it means to create a product completely Made In America and how integrity and character factor into business.
