"A lot of the companies I've worked for were trying to transition from proprietary or very siloed products, very black box products to more standards based products. And that seems to be a common thread that I've gone through even in proprietary companies. Avaya also was trying to move away from a very, very monolithic black box voice messaging system that they had millions of dollars invested in called the Octel Voice Messaging system. "They wanted to go to more of a standards based system where, and also a more componentized system, if you will, with the voice server at the back, and then all the UI and the functions and the application server and the front.  "Especially in the embedded space, articulating the value of a company based distribution, say like a Wind River versus roll-your-own was really hard because if you looked at that market in those days 75 to 80% of customers wanted to roll their own. And so the 20% of the market was kind of split between all the commercial vendors. "It's been hard through the timeframe from then to now to really find good ways to monetize you know, over open source. And as you know, Red Hat's been one of the most successful companies in this area, but most companies have really struggled to monetize and, and sustain an open source based business. "The cloud is providing a better business model. Delivering the product as a service because the operationalization of an open source product is so difficult to do, and it saves you the time of installation, integration, support, testing. You can just start running the product from day one. I think that's been a pretty good business model. What is really, really interesting to me is how open source community becomes an extended engineering team for you. Y es que hay marcas que solo fabrican objetivos manuales y de distancia focal fija para abaratar los costes y así ofrecer lentes mucho más económicas. Pero antes me toca recordarte que esta semana tienes disponible en la academia el curso de catalogación en Lightroom. Los objetivos de fotografía manuales Que este tipo de objetivos manuales tengan precios muy bajos respecto a los objetivos automáticos no quiere decir que no tengan suficiente calidad para ofrecer trabajos de calidad. Como todo, dependerá de la marca y del objetivo en particular. Pero mucho de estos casi igualan a sus equivalentes con enfoque automático. Incluso a veces los superan. Y estas marca de lentes manuales y fijas pueden ofrecer precios más asequibles porque se ahorran en la fabricación todos los costes de los motores de enfoque actuales que son muy punteros. Además también se ahorran tener que pagar patentes. Esto es la clave de sus precios y no una baja calidad precio. ¿Merecen las pena los objetivos manuales de focal fija? Teniendo claro que hay objetivos manuales que dan calidad suficiente para ofrecer trabajos a tus clientes tenemos que centrarnos en los pros y contras de adquirir este tipo de lentes. Y no, no son para todo el mundo, por ejemplo tener un teleobjetivo muy luminoso o un 50mm sin enfoque automático hace casi imposible trabajar con ellos en muchas circunstancias. Como mínimo te harán trabajar mucho más lento, y como explicamos en el curso de pricing, el tiempo es dinero, y tus clientes no van a estar dispuestos a pagar más por ello. ¿Y en qué situaciones o trabajos si son recomendables estos objetivos de fotografía manuales? Nosotros recomendamos usarlos si son objetivos gran angular u objetivos macros, ya que la propia idiosincrasia de este tipo de objetivos hacen que sean viables. Ya sea la enorme profundidad de campo que dan los grandes angulares y más usando la hiperfocal. O en el caso de los objetivos macro, el uso del trípode es casi obligatorio por lo que en esas situaciones te dará igual tener enfoque automático, ya que podrás enfocar mediante focus picking o con la pantalla del live view. ¿Mejores marcas de fijos y sin enfoque automático? Y ahora vamos a tratar cuáles son las mejores marcas que fabrican objetivos de fotografía manuales. Ya que cada vez salen más marcas al mercado dentro de este nicho. Y entre todas nos quedamos sin duda, con Samyang, por su largo recorrido y sus objetivos más que conocidos (como el 14mm 2.8 o el 12mm 2.0) O las más recientes Irix y Laowa. Que además de ofrecer también objetivos muy angulares con una gran calidad (aunque de mayor coste que los de Samyang), también tienen en su catálogo objetivos macro espectaculares. Y por último quedaría el resto de marcas como 7artisans, ttartisans, Meike, Pergear, etc. Estas marcas se orientan a un público muy específico, el que no busca la excelencia en cuanto a calidad y prioriza sus bajos costes. Angulares por menos de 150€ o lentes de diafragmas inferiores a f1 por menos de 300€, pero que los hacen un poco inviables para trabajar con ellos. Dave D. Taylor is an American game programmer, best known as a former id Software employee and noted for his work promoting Linux gaming. In 1993 he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. Taylor worked for id Software between 1993 and 1996, and was during the time involved with the development of Doom and Quake. He created ports of both games to IRIX, AIX, Solaris and Linux, and helped program the Atari Jaguar ports of Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. He also considers himself to have been the "spackle coder" on Doom, for adding things such as the status bar, sound library integration, the automap, level transitions, cheat codes, and the network chat system. On Quake, he wrote the original sound engine, the DOS TCP/IP network library, and added VESA 2.0 support. One of the musical themes in Doom II, "Dave D. Taylor Blues", was named after him by Robert Prince. The 2003 book Masters of Doom: How Two Guys Created an Empire and Transformed Pop Culture mentions his habit of passing out from motion sickness after prolonged playing of Doom, and how the other employees would, after such incidents, sketch a body outline of his unconscious form with masking tape. After the success of the game, they bought him a couch to pass out on. His attempts to "talk up" Quake on-line, his purchase of an Acura NSX with Doom money, his friendship with American McGee, and his eventual departure from the company are also mentioned. Taylor founded a small game company called Crack dot Com from 1996 to 1998. Crack dot Com released only one game, Abuse, a PC platform shooter. In a 1997 interview, he claimed that he wasn't particularly proud of Abuse, and that "he set out to prove that a person could sell 50,000 copies of a so-so game." He then led the effort to build Golgotha, a first-person shooter / real-time strategy hybrid, but the company folded before its completion. Between 1998 and 2001 he worked for Transmeta. He was president of Carbon6 from 2001 to 2002, also working as lead designer and producer for the Game Boy Advance game Spy Kids Challenger. Since 2002 he has been vice president of Naked Sky Entertainment and since 2003 also an advisor and freelance game designer. He is also willing to act as a Linux game porter for pay projects. In 2009, he produced Abuse Classic for the Apple iPhone and Beakiez for the PC.

¿Qué accesorios utilizar en fotografía nocturna?   Como os dijimos muchas veces nos encontramos con compañeros fotógrafos que quieren cambiar de equipo, pensando que con un mejor equipo van a tomar mejores fotografías nocturnas, y no es así.  https://youtu.be/HxclMOwqVV8 Lo interesante a la hora de salir en busca de una buena fotografia nocturna es tener una buena planificación, no solo de la fotografía, si no de como capturarla para sacarle el máximo partido a la localización con nuestro equipo.   Os recomendamos un libro de procesado avanzado que puede ayudarnos mucho a la hora de conseguir ese plus que nuestro equipo no nos da.   Se titula Técnicas Avanzadas de edición digital os dejamos el enlace a continuación.     Todo un lujo tener un libro como este, ojo es un libro electrónico no esta en papel.   Cual es el mejor objetivo para fotografía nocturna?   Después hablamos de los objetivos y os hable de mi experiencia con 2, principalmente con la marca Samyang y con Irix.   El primero es un objetivo "Barato", que da buenos resultados, pero su calidad/precio ha quedado en entredicho con la aparición de nuevas marcas como por ejemplo Irix.     Como os dijimos en el directo, es una opción, pero si queremos una calidad superior nos decantamos por Irix 15 mm     Por la diferencia de precio no hay color.   Tarjetas de memoria para fotografía nocturna   Os hablamos también de la importancia de una buena tarjeta de memoria. Hay muchas pero vamos a centrarnos en SD, que es el standard ahora mismo, y hay que fijarse en algunas peculiaridades.     Hasta ahora podemos encontrar: normal, HC y XC.   SD -> 16MB, 32 MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB. No soportan el BUS UHS.   SDHC-> 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB. Soportan BUS UHS.   SDXC-> 64GB, 128GB, 200GB, 512GB, 2TB. Soportan BUS UHS.    Tipo de BUS UHS   UHS-I: 104MB/sg Velocidad máxima de lectura/escritura.   UHS-II: 312MB/sg Velocidad máxima de lectura/escritura.   Clase de BUS UHS   U1: 10MB/sg Velocidad mínima de escritura.   U3: 30MB/sg Velocidad mínima de escritura.    Clase   Clase 2:    2MB/sg   Clase 4:    4MB/sg   Clase 6:    6MB/sg   Clase 10:  10MB/sg   Capacidad de almacenamiento   La cantidad de memoria que puede almacenar esa tarjeta.   Tipos de tarjetas según las siglas   Las siglas SD, SDHC y SDXC vienen dadas por la capacidad de las mismas. SD (Security Digital) fueron las primeras que se lanzaron compitiendo con otros formatos, como las XD o las Memory Stick, y su capacidad llegaba a alcanzar los 32GB. Luego llegaron las SDHC (SD High Capacity) que otorgaban mayor confianza y velocidad en el guardado de archivos grandes y, en teoría, son capaces de llegar a las 2TB, pero la SD Association estableció su límite en 32GB. Y por último las SDXC (SD eXtended Capacity), las cuales llegan a 2TB y por cuenta de que guardan mayor cantidad de datos, necesitan más velocidad, por lo que vienen con BUS, además están preparadas para poder ser formateadas en exFAT.   Los buses se crearon para las tarjetas de mayor rendimiento, pues era necesario que fuesen capaces de escribir a gran velocidad grandes cantidades de datos provenientes de los vídeos FullHD en adelante (2K,4K...), sin que la grabación del dispositivo fuese detenida por culpa de la tarjeta.   Después de estos datos técnicos os recomendamos un par de tarjetas:         Como veis a la hora de realizar una buena fotografía nocturna son muchas las cosas a tener en cuenta, desde la planificación, la preparación y tener claro cómo tenemos que realizar la fotografia que tenemos en la cabeza.   Como plus os dejamos el enlace a una pequeña power bank pero muy eficiente:     Nos vemos en el proximo directo.

Ya está aquí el podcast de esta semana, cargado de noticias, preguntas y vamos a aprovechar para hablar de la herramienta niveles. Por otro lado, dar las gracias a los que asistieron ayer a la meetup que teníamos programada en Fnac Sevilla, tuvimos un encuentro dónde hablamos de la Naturaleza y la fotografía a manos de Manu Cruz, una buena oportunidad para pasar tiempo con otros amigos de la fotografía. Os recordamos los dos sorteos que tenemos disponible, por un lado el libro de Fotografía Móvil firmado por Rodrigo Rivas que irá a manos de uno de nuestros suscriptores que responda bien a la pregunta que tenéis en la Intranet. Por otro lado, seguimos con el concurso de una cámara réflex Canon 350D. Tenéis toda la información en los enlaces de interés. Continuamos con las noticias del sector, dónde lo primero que destacamos es la sorpresa que nos trajo Google y que ya anunciamos en nuestro blog, acerca de Nik Collection, un paquete de software que podremos descargar totalmente gratis desde su web. En cambio Yahoo, va pegando pasos hacia atrás, hace poco nos enteramos que su software para subir imágenes automáticamente Flickr Uploader, se convertía en una herramienta de pago. Algo que no va a sentar muy bien a una comunidad muy denostada. Os hablamos de Irix, una lente para dominarlas a todas, también os hablamos de ella la semana pasada y os dejamos un enlace para ampliar la información, de lo que será seguro, uno de los objetivos más interesantes del próximo año. Dejamos las noticias del sector para empezar con las preguntas de fotografía de nuestros oyentes, empezamos con una sobre el RAW y cómo saber si está modificado o no. Explicamos que las modificaciones que hagamos en un RAW quedan guardadas en un archivo XMP que podremos exportar a otro programas de edición, pero que en cualquier momento, podremos volver a los ajustes iniciales del RAW con un simple clic. Por último aclaramos una pregunta que nos viene genial para empezar a hablar de retoque dentro de nuestro podcast de Fotografía y Retoque Digital, y es que vamos a aclarar la herramienta de Niveles, explicaremos cómo funciona y cuándo y cómo debemos de usarla. Pero para empezar a utilizar esta herramienta debemos saber utilizar el histograma, os dejo el podcast donde hablamos de ello. Cuando abrimos la herramienta niveles podremos ver nuestro histograma incrustado junto a tres deslizadores. Uno para las zonas de sombras, otra para medios tonos y otra para altas luces. El en el histograma que tenemos presente, vemos cómo nuestra fotografía se encuentra con el mayor peso de pixeles repartidos sobre la zona izquierda, la zona de las sombras, por lo cual nos está indicando que nuestra fotografía está subexpuesta (oscura). Para corregir dicha imagen tan sólo tendremos que desplazar el deslizador de altas luces hacia la izquierda, comprimiendo de esta forma el histograma para subir la exposición de la misma. Al hace esto, es recomendable hacerlo con el botón Alt pulsado, de esta forma podremos ver de una forma mucho más visual, las zonas que estamos perdiendo al realizar este retoque. En el caso contrario, de una fotografía sobrexpuesta, tendremos el histograma con el peso en la derecha, como vemos en la siguiente imagen. Con esta herramienta podremos ver fácilmente si nuestra exposición es correcta o no. Para compensar la exposición en esta imagen, haremos el mismo proceso pero a la inversa, seleccionaremos el deslizador de sombras, pulsando la tecla ALT, y nos moveremos hacia la derecha, ajustando así la exposición de forma correcta. Todo lo que está a la izquierda de ese deslizador, será información perdida. Es muy recomendable realizar todos los ajustes de nuestras fotografías en capas de ajuste, evitando siempre hacer el ajuste directamente a nuestra fotografía, de esta forma tendremos el control total sobre cada ajuste y podremos eliminarlo y modificarlo a nuestro antojo en cualquier momento y trabajar de forma no destructiva con nuestras fotografías.
