I've noticed that no matter who I talk to, I keep hearing about the importance of government action for addressing climate change. Laws, public programs, and incentives are critical to speeding up decarbonisation, protecting the environment, and ensuring that historically underserved communities aren't left behind. Much of the climate policy we need will happen at the state and local level. And there's perhaps no state more influential than California. And so I was thrilled to talk with California State Senator Josh Becker, and Mary Creasman, CEO of California Envirovoters. They're both working hard to make sure California continues to be a climate action leader and they provide some great insights to what we can all be doing. So let's dive in. In Today's Episode, we cover:[3:41] Senator Becker and Mary Creasman - what are their roles in the climate transition [6:09] The importance of local, state, and federal policy [9:51] The role CA has played in protecting the environment and fighting climate change [13:03] Priorities and challenges for climate action in CA [20:29] The most important actions and ideas for influencing others [27:46] What is the Justice 40 Act and why it matters [30:40] Why did Senator Manchin come around and what is the Inflation Reduction Act [34:34] Climate as a top electoral issue [37:11] Speaking to voters about climate - what works and how to get more involved [39:25] The most effective ways for people to accelerate climate policymaking [42:56] How voters can reach policymakers and actually have an influence Resources Mentionedhttps://envirovoters.org/ (California Environmental Voters) Connect with Senator Josh Becker and Mary CreasmanConnect with https://sd13.senate.ca.gov/contact (Senator Becker) Connect with https://www.linkedin.com/in/marycreasman/ (Mary) Connect With Jason Rissmanhttps://investedinclimate.com (https://InvestedInClimate.com) On https://www.linkedin.com/in/jasonrissman/ (LinkedIn) On https://twitter.com/jasonrissman (Twitter) Subscribe to https://pod.link/1620915138 (Invested In Climate)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending that all children ages 5 through 11 get a low-dose COVID-19 vaccine made by Pfizer-BioNTech. In California, counties across the state are preparing to deliver the shots to children. Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva continues to attack his county's COVID-19 vaccination mandate. He claims the sheriff's department could lose thousands of employees because of the mandate, although he hasn't provided evidence that that will actually happen. It's important to have health insurance, especially during a pandemic. At the beginning of the pandemic, some insurers chose not to charge COVID-19 patients for expensive hospital stays and therapies. A few have continued that policy as long as the public health emergency is in place, but most are quietly going back to business as usual. Southern California Edison and Pacific Gas and Electric are alleged to have violated a wide range of safety regulations before the blazes, which include the Thomas and Woolsey fires in Southern California and the Kincade Fire north of San Francisco. Reporter: Dan Brekke, KQED Pacific Gas & Electric ratepayers could be stuck footing at least some of the bill for the Dixie fire. It's just the latest scandal for the troubled utility. Sept. 30, 2020, was Josh Becker’s last day in legal tech, at least for the time being, as he pursues his campaign for election to the California state Senate in the district that encompasses Silicon Valley cities such as Palo Alto, Mountain View and Menlo Park. Most recently, Becker was chairman of the trailblazing legal analytics company Lex Machina and head of legal analytics at LexisNexis, which acquired Lex Machina in 2015. Previously, he was Lex Machina’s CEO, a role he stepped into shortly after Stanford Law School spun it off into a private company. Becker also heads the LexisNexis Legal Tech Accelerator program, which recently announced its fifth cohort of startup participants, and which he will continue to stay involved with on a reduced basis. On Becker’s last day in legal tech, he sat down for an interview with LawNext host Bob Ambrogi, to recount his career, share his observations about the industry, and offer advice for startups in the field. Virtually overnight, COVID-19 changed the landscape for law firms and how they serve clients. While some firms were caught unprepared – struggling to adapt to a remote work environment and lacking the technologies and procedures to ensure seamless client service and team performance – other firms made the pivot quickly. What gave these successful firms the edge? In this episode, which was recorded as a live video webinar on May 7, 2020, we speak with the heads of innovation at four major U.S. law firms about how they responded to the pandemic and its impact on their firms. The panelists are: David Cambria, Chief Services Officer, Baker McKenzie. Linda Novosel, Chief Innovation and Value Officer, Blank Rome, LLP. Josh Becker’s early career was defined by service both in El Salvador, where he spent six months working with refugees fleeing violence and in Washington DC where he served as press secretary for Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky. After his stint in Washington Josh moved to California and enrolled in Stanford where he earned a joint MBA/JD. Josh has released a comprehensive plan to combat climate change, by far the most comprehensive proposal of any candidate for this office. These proposals include; achieving carbon neutrality in state government agencies by 2030, paying farmers to sequester carbon, and a prize for breakthrough inventions in clean technology. He has earned the endorsements of the Sierra Club and League of Conservation Voters. Josh believes healthcare is a human right and that single-payer must be our north star. This is a generational challenge that we can and must meet. Josh is a leader in education advocacy, having served on the San Mateo County Childcare partnership council and on the UC Merced board of trustees. He is also a public-school parent in Menlo Park. This district has more than its share of pioneering non-profits, successful and influential businesses, and world-class educational institutions. Josh’s 30 years of leadership in these sectors, make him ideally suited to bring the best ideas from each of them to Government. Josh will fight for smart, transit-oriented growth. Local control must include local responsibility for the region we all share. If we can't do a better job of addressing this issue, we face a lost generation of middle-class residents, communities without nurses, teachers, and first responders. In 2016 Josh’s work on education, the environment, and income equality was recognized with a Jefferson Award for Public Service, earning him praise from Michelle Obama and CBS News. Josh is a founder of the Full Circle Fund, an organization which has raised more than $10 million and has supported more than 50 organizations pursuing innovation in energy, education, affordable housing and tech training. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/freeman-means-business/support

Many folks become lawyers so they don't have to deal with math anymore. It's one of those weaknesses that holds back the profession as a business. Yet, cutting-edge tech is bringing number crunching to the fingertips of lawyers everywhere in the form of easy to use data analytics. Joe and Elie talk to Josh Becker of LexisNexis about the release of Context, a new tool that delivers deep insights into judicial idiosyncracies by analyzing the language of their body of work. Special thanks to our sponsor, Smith.ai.
The comedy-drama MORNING, NOON & NIGHT explores a day-in-the-life of six people battling different addictions. The characters feel all-too familiar as they could be your neighbor, your family or even yourself. The film functions as a mirror examining three college students, a history teacher, a lawyer and a top executive as they struggle to make it through a single day. According to director, producer and writer Josh Becker, “Everybody struggles with something. The real question asked is how does anyone get through life? After all, reality is just a crutch for people who can’t handle drugs." Becker joins us to talk about his raw, unflinching farce about the hypocrisies and denials that are the daily “reality” of people who are living lives in a suffocating bubble. Attorneys are always looking for ways to improve their “game”, so to speak. There is a demand for more in-depth data to help make decisions about which direction to take their cases. Lex Machina, which began as a public interest product through Stanford Law School, is bringing open transparency to the law. Through legal analytics, they offer a solution to any sort of guessing game or surface level research that attorneys would normally do in a case. Lex Machina's, Lexpressions engine, provides attorneys information generally not accessible about judges, other attorneys, award amounts, timelines in cases and other legal related material. By examining and digesting this data, lawyers now have insight into the behaviors and results that different legal approaches may yield. They can evaluate the likelihoods of a win for a certain motion before a judge, make educated presumptions on how long it will likely take to get to a trial, and even examine which judges are more likely to rule in a certain way based on their past cases heard. In this interview CEO of Lex Machina, Josh Becker talks about insights in legal analytics and the company's future aspirations since its acquisition by powerhouse, LexisNexis, in November 2015. The use of analytics has permeated into various industries, from baseball to banking, but could it be invaluable to lawyers as well? In this episode of Law Technology Now, host Bob Ambrogi talks to Josh Becker from Lex Machina about legal analytics, machine learning, and the impact these new technologies will have on the legal industry. They discuss the various uses of data analytics and machine learning for lawyers including showcasing expertise, determining strategy, and mining data. Josh Becker is the CEO of Lex Machina, a company that provides intellectual property litigation data and analytics to companies and law firms. Special thanks to our sponsor, Thomson Reuters.

This week on XENA: WARRIOR PODCAST, we’re going fishing! Vera, Katie, and Livy hang out by the lake with 3x18 “Fins, Femmes & Gems,” a frothy farce that also functions as…an advertisement for DeBeers? We discuss what could have been before the last-minute rewrites, subtext becoming text, director Josh Becker’s spilling of tea, and Rob Tapert’s perplexing love affair with comedies about fishing. Plus: hot takes on why Xena is mostly unaffected by Aphrodite’s spell (she's hardcore obsessed with fishing anyway!), Gabrielle reminding Xena of Lyceus (a little creepy?) and Joxer the Ape-man (somebody really needs to teach this boy about consent!). Film også nævnt i denne cast: REVENGE OF THE GREEN DRAGON, BASKETCASE 1-3, UNDER THE SKIN, BAD BIOLOGY, FRAKENHOOKER, THE INTERVIEW, STONEHEARST ASYLUM, BEST WORST MOVIE, R, MEN AT LUNCH, MEMORY OF THE CAMPS, BROADCHURCH (S2), INTERSTELLAR, SIGNS, DEEP IMPACT og mange flere!

We interview Josh Becker, a teacher for Breakthrough for Men and host of the I Simply Am podcast. Breakthrough for Men is dedicated to making real change in the quality of men's lives. We discuss why it's much more difficult to gather a group of men (vs. women) for the purpose of self exploration. Josh helps redefine the definition of manhood - society encourages men to be strong and not vulnerable, intelligent and not thoughtful, powerful and not beautiful. And men are using unhealthy coping mechanisms (alcohol, drugs, sex, gaming, gambling) to to deal with their unrecognized feelings and challenges. Josh can be found here and information on Breakthrough for Men can be found here. How can women help men open up? If and when your husband shows any sense of vulnerability, do not use it against them or make fun of them in any way, and create a safe and trusting environment for your husband to express emotions. Men need to know they're safe before opening up. How can men open up? Take a look at the people you surround yourself with. Is it based soley upon alcohol and sports? Water is one of the most hidden of our environmental sustainability issues, and yet it poses critical challenges for our future. In this panel discussion at Stanford University, experts from water companies and academia discuss efforts for reducing energy usage, production, and transportation of water and wastewater. They share what water companies are doing to save energy, and how entrepreneurs can best approach the industry to create new technologies and business opportunities in this regard. Speakers were invited by the Stanford Graduate School of Business Energy Club in partnership with the San Francisco-based nonprofit Imagine H2O. Josh Becker is founder and general partner of New Cycle Capital. He started his career in the clean energy area in 1991. From Williams College he went to work for ICF-Kaiser International, a DC-based environmental consulting and engineering firm. After working on Capitol Hill as a press secretary for a congresswoman on the Energy and Commerce Committee, he started his first Internet company in 1994 when he co-founded IntraACTIVE, a pioneering groupware company. He was also one of the first employees at EarthWeb Inc, which went public in 1998. After joint degrees from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Stanford Law School, Becker joined Brentwood Venture Capital, followed by Redpoint Ventures. Craig Criddle is a professor in the Stanford Environmental Engineering and Science program and a senior fellow with the Woods Institute for the Environment. His research focus is environmental biotechnology. Criddle is best known for large interdisciplinary field projects, studies of microbial ecology in bioreactors, and work on microbial transformations of persistent contaminants. Some current projects include a field-scale evaluation of uranium remediation, DNA-monitoring of microbial community structure at full-scale biological wastewater treatment plants, and the development of membrane bioreactors for energy recovery and nutrient removal.
