Welcome to an audio-led edition of Unmade. Today's interview features Australia's most talked about business writer, Joe Aston, whose book on Qantas has dominated the political cycle for the last ten days. Also today, in the Unmade Index, Seven and Nine held their AGMs, taking different approaches to acknowledging their failings. If you've been thinking about upgrading to an Unmade membership, this is the perfect time. Your membership includes:* Complimentary tickets to all of Unmade's events, including HumAIn (2025), REmade (2025), Unlock (2025), and Compass (November);* Member-only content and our paywalled archives; * Your own copy of Media Unmade.‘No amount of PR can fix the operations of a company that is failing': Joe Aston on how profit-chasing caught up with the Qantas brandToday's conversation with Joe Aston takes place where brand, business, and lobbying collide. His book The Chairman's Lounge contains the most detailed examination yet seen of the Qantas-operated network of invitation-only lounges for politicians and the business elite.Across Australia's capital cities, alongside the well signposted Qantas Club and Qantas Business Lounges, is a third type of lounge, hidden behind mirrored doors, with word ‘Private' written on them. The Chairman's Lounge isn't just a space with an a la carte menu and top shelf wine; being invited to become a member means a range of travel perks. No matter what type of ticket they buy, a Chairman's Lounge member will likely be upgraded when they fly.At the very least, they'll be sitting in the front row of economy. Ever noticed those smartly dressed people enjoying the extra leg-room of row 4, being greeted by name by the cabin crew and handed a glass of something nice from the business trolley? Chances are they're CL members. And for influential politicians travelling internationally, CL status means buying an economy class ticket and sitting in a first class seat. The Chairman's Lounge has been an incredibly effective lobbying tool, allowing Qantas more access to politicians than any other business in Australia. Says Aston: ”What the Chairman's Lounge does is make Qantas the most powerful lobbyist in Canberra.”And that's without taking into account the bosses who bend their company travel policies towards Qantas, even if other alternatives are cheaper. As Aston puts it: “It's worth every cent. The operating costs aren't that high compared to what it gets people to do, and that is spend millions and millions more than they otherwise would”.Aston's book covers the period where underinvestment in operations began to catch up with the Qantas brand. He is critical of the board for failing to hold former CEO Alan Joyce to account as the brand deteriorated. That includes Australia's most famous adman Todd Sampson. “I do think it is ridiculous that he's still on the Qantas board - he proved to be completely useless when it mattered. Not, by the way, more useless than than anyone else, and not less useless: just as useless.Theres a risk of burying the lede in this interview. His Rear Window column in the Australian Financial Review was often an agenda setter. So what will he do next?Aston hints that he may launch a newsletter of his own: “Doing my own reader-funded content is something I've thought about.”He acknowledges that his style of writing on the edge puts him in danger of attracting threatening letters from defamation lawyers. “It's all a risk calculation,” he says. “It's how much revenue you can generate and is it enough to just pay for whatever litigation costs come your way. “Index bottoms out as TV networks share a gloomy outlookThe Unmade Index recovered marginally on Thursday after hitting another all-time low the day before.Yesterday saw The Unmade Index lift by 0.15% to land on 424.2 points. The Index, which tracks the value of Australia's ASX-listed media and marketing sector, began at the start of 2022 on a nominal 1000 points. Both Nine and Seven West Media held their annual general meetings yesterday.Nine's chair Catherine West used a significant her address to shareholders to acknowledge that the company still needs to do more to address its problematic culture within its newsrooms.SWM's chair Kerry Stokes dedicated one paragraph of his address to tell his shareholders that his company has now modernised its culture, and four paragraphs to complaining about the ABC's coverage of the problem.Nine told the market that after an Olympics boost, TV revenues have returned to the 10% rate of decline seen in the previous financial year. It warned “we are seeing no tangible signs of improvement to date”.Seven said its revenues are likely to be down about 6.5% for the half.Nine's market cap grew slightly yesterday, up by 0.9% to $1.75bn. Seven West Media lost 3%, to land on $239mMeanwhile, Ooh Media recovered by 2.1% and Southern Cross Austereo was up by nearly 1%. ARN Media went in the other direction, losing 4.2%.Time to leave you to your Friday.I'll be back tomorrow with Best of the Week.Have a great day.Toodlepip…Tim BurrowesPublisher - Unmadetim@unmade.media This is a public episode. Gold miners in demand as Gold Conference kicks off, NCM up 1.6% and NST gaining 1.9%. Oil and gas better as crude rose and gas prices volatile on strike news, WDS up 0.8% and STO up 1.3%. Today's edition features an interview with one of Australia's most storied investigative journalists, Nine's Nick McKenzie. It coincides with the publication of McKenzie's book about disgraced SAS soldier Ben Roberts-SmithThe Age and Sydney Morning Herald's Nick McKenzie is one of Australia's most acclaimed investigate journalists. With 14 Walkley Awards and a stint as president of the Melbourne Press Club under his belt, McKenzie's latest battle had the highest possible stakes - with the future of investigative journalism in Australia and indeed his own career on the line. The investigative reporting of McKenzie and colleague Chris Masters into the misconduct of Ben Roberts-Smith and other Australian SAS troops in Afghanistan resulted in the most significant defamation battle in at least two decades.McKenzie's book on the Ben Roberts-Smith saga, Crossing The Line, has now been published. In conversation with Unmade's Tim Burrowes, McKenzie discusses the realities of the investigative process, what it was like battling a formerly lauded Anzac war hero in courtrooms over the last five years and the personal toll it took.“It's a miracle that we won this case because the law is geared to favour applicants, it's geared to favour rich people suing journalists,” McKenzie says.“Knowing that the weight of law and precedent is against you, and knowing how hard it is to prove war crimes in a civil court, it was unbelievably stressful. To contest this case, we had to keep digging through evidence and information, we could never rest.”The fight was also on company lines, with BRS, who was until recently employed as GM of Seven Queensland, being funded in the case by Seven West Media proprietor Kerry Stokes.McKenzie decries the tribalism of Australian media. “That tribalism and competitiveness exists in all companies. The ABC's at war with commercial media, commercial media's at war with itself, everyone is fighting. That's partly a function of there being some unpleasant people, but it's also a commercial reality. We're all fighting for our commercial lives - it's a tough environment out there, there's a limited ad market, there are fierce contest for sporting rights, there is literally commercial war at play.”McKenzie undertook much of his work alongside his long-time ‘mentor' - investigative reporter Chris Masters of the Sydney Morning Herald.“Chris Masters and I endured a very difficult process. We were there for each other through that process,” McKenzie says.“It's not to say there wasn't tension in the relationship; we're two very different journalists with different ways of reporting. But that camaraderie and us applying our two different ways of doing journalism was so effective, so powerful.”“I think journalism is best done as a partnership.”Nine's 60 Minutes report on the court case featured an image of Masters and McKenzie working in the NSW State Library. It was reminiscent of an iconic scene in All The President's Men, the classic movie of investigative journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein's work on the Watergate scandalAsked about the similarity of the images, it's one of just a couple of occasions in the interview when McKenzie slips away from the question. The other is when he's asked about the possibility of Nine or its streaming service Stan making a docu-drama about the case.Audio production was courtesy of Abe's Audio, the people to talk to about voiceovers, sound design and podcast production.Message us: letters@unmade.media This is a public episode. RBA Governor Phillip Lowe suggested more people live together to remedy Australia's housing shortage. It's been a week of consequence in Australia's legal system with the Ben Roberts Smith Defamation verdict and Bruce Lerhmann breaking his silence. I'll break down all the facts and disputed facts on Tim's News Explosion. Melbourne experienced two aftershocks following last week's Sunbury-centred earthquake, there weren't any aftershocks in Melbourne after Victoria's 2021 earthquake. Following backlash, Dan Andrews has backed away from one of his new budget measures to remove the payroll tax exemption for private schools. VicRoads has ordered a motorist to hand back his Dan Out numberplates deeming them inappropriate. Victoria Police had to turn off social media comments on its advertisements for its Public Order Response Teams that brutalized Victorians during lockdowns. The suggestions from Reserve Bank Governor Phillip Lowe before Senate Estimates that Australians should work longer to lessen the blow of inflation and more people should live in the same household since the housing supply isn't keeping up with demand were not well received by the public. Hancock Prospecting owner Gina Rinehart has been named the 2023 Western Australian of the Year for her philanthropy. Roger Cook will replace Mark McGowan as WA Premier. The West Australian newspaper published an op-ed about how residents can grieve the loss of their state daddy. Airbus Albo travelled first to Singapore for Shangri-La Security Dialogue then onto Vietnam to drink beer with the locals. The latest Newspoll has the Aboriginal voice referendum at 46% Yes and 43%. Clearly the race blackmail is having the opposite effect on voters. Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith lost his defamation case against Nine, Nick McKenzie and Chris Masters with Federal Judge Anthony Besanko ruling they proved their accusations he committed war crimes in Afghanistan. Roberts-Smith has not been found guilty let alone charged with any war crimes. He was backed in his defamation case by his employer Kerry Stokes at Channel Seven. Bruce Lehrmann the man accused by Brittany Higgins of raping her in Linda Reynolds's office in 2019 gave an interview to Liam Bartlett on 7News Spotlight. Featured in that interview was CCTV footage from that night in Parliament House where Brittany Higgins looked excited to be there. Also aired was Lisa Wilkinson and her producer's pre-project interview chat with Higgins and her boyfriend David Sharaz where Wilkinson suggested things for Higgins to say during the interview. The four former Hawthorn Indigenous players who accused former coaches Alistair Clarkson and Chris Fagan of mistreatment have outed themselves and launched a Human Rights Commission complaint. One of the former players is Cyril Rioli whose wife Shannyn Ah Sam-Rioli believed a joke by former President Jeff Kennett about her ripped jeans was racist. Two National Socialist Network members Michael Nelson and Nathan Bull performed the Nazi salute with t-shirts that said 6 million a bit much at an Iranian protest in Melbourne? The Andrews Government is planning to outlaw the salute. The Queensland Government's proposed Criminal Code (Serious Vilification and Hate Crimes) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2023 increases the penalty for “bigoted public statements” from six months in prison to three years. Former Vice President Mike Pence is set to announce his 2024 campaign for President. Pence was cleared by the FBI for mishandling classified documents, but Donald Trump has not. Joe Biden fell when after speaking on a stage but was uninjured.  The Daily Wire gave away Matt Walsh's What is a Woman documentary free for the weekend on Twitter. Twitter originally threatened to limit its reach because the documentary features misgendering. But the weekend ended up with Twitter owner Elon Musk pinning the documentary to his account stating it was a must watch for all parents. The British mainstream media continue to platform TikTok social terrorist Mizzy. Phillip Schofield has gone on the PR offensive claiming he's the victim and that his affair with former ITV This Morning runner Mathew McGreevy was something that just happened, he didn't groom the teenager. Schofield said to the BBC he felt like killing himself as Caroline Flack did. Drawing on insights from his ringside seat, independent journalist, commentator and Mumbrella founder Tim Burrowes knits together the big events and conversations with key players then and now to reveal the drama and tell the stories behind the changes that every consumer of Australian media has witnessed over the past decade. In this unprecedented account, Tim considers how the newspaper rivers of gold evaporated, TV viewers turned to Netflix, and radio listeners started streaming instead. He covers how networks went broke, the ABC came under sustained attack, and how News Corporation's phone hacking drama in the UK delivered Rupert Murdoch to the most humble day of his life.Of course there is no drama without people and as much as Media Unmade is the tale of the fluctuating fortunes of some of the country's best-known companies, it also presents the compelling stories of the powerful personalities who have shaped them – from the Murdochs, to Antony Catalano and Greg Hywood, to Kim Williams and James Packer, Gina Rinehart, Alan Jones, Michelle Guthrie, Justin Milne and Kerry Stokes.Against the existential threat embodied by Google and Facebook, Australia's media companies remade their broken business models and plotted takeovers in a battle for survival. And just when the worst seemed to be over, COVID-19 delivered the biggest advertising recession of all time, pushing every media company to the brink.

John Doyle is one of Australia's greatest comedy performers, as the Rampaging Roy Slaven half of 'Roy and HG'. On October 7th 2005 he delivered this Andrew Olle media lecture for the ABC, which was a wide ranging speech discussing sensationalism in news, opinion, War in Iraq, 9-11, journalistic integrity, the ABC and fistfights at the Walkleys. It's very funny in parts, serious in others, and all delivered with a little of that Rampaging Roy lilt, even though this was pure John Doyle. John Doyle has a memoir out, written in lockdown, about being fifteen years of age in Lithgow. The ASX 200 rallied up 34 points to 7006 (0.5%) post RBA announcement as it seems the central bank is in no hurry to raise rates. QE is dead. The meeting saw inflation revised higher but still too early to conclude whether it is nothing more than short term supply chain issues. The board is prepared to be patient. Enough to bring the buyers back. Although enthusiasm faded at close. Banks found support with the Big Bank Basket rising to $168.50. MQG also doing well and insurers enjoying a good day out at the beach. QBE up 2.3% and SUN up 1.6%. Money managers were also in demand, GQG rose 4.4% and MFG up 4.6%. Industrials firm but unspectacular, CSL up 0.5% RMD rising 2.3% and ALL up 1.4%. Consumer stocks modestly higher with tech the standout as SQ2 went hard up 6.1 as Block rallied in US. Z1P tried hard to hold double digit gains but succumbed eventually rising %. XRO up % and the All-Tech Index up 2.2%. Miners were in the doldrums as index rebalancing continued and BHP sagged 3.1% after holding up so well in the rout, money is now moving out of havens into growth tech. RIO down 2.4% and FMG off 0.7%. Lithium stocks stirring but need a push, PLS up 1.9% and MIN up 3.6%. Energy stocks better but still a little unloved all thing considered. Gold miners mixed. In corporate news, Kerry Stokes will be happy at BLD will be paying a large $3bn distribution from its ill-fated US adventure. The market seems happy with its failure and sale of assets. ABB warned on rising costs but appears to have convinced the market that all is still well only off 1.4%. Plenty happening on the economic front. The many women of Australia have said “enough is enough”, and said it loudly through the March 4 Justice campaign. But the Prime Minister is hard of hearing and wants it all to be on his terms, refusing to meet the organisers of the rally in public, wanting to meet behind closed doors and in private. Which is exactly what a rapist would do. And, of course, Attorney–General Christian Porter decided to launch his defamation case on the same day of the March 4 Justice rallies. Tone deaf!Vaccinations are another area which the federal government has totally mismanaged, and yet another example of incompetence which Scott Morrison, Greg Hunt and Chief Medical Officer are trying to spin their way through. The government promised the vaccination program would be completed by 31 October 2021, and have been using a megaphone to let everyone know. But now that the vaccination program is not going be completed by 31 October 2021, the government is adamant that they never actually said that. Apparently, everyone else in Australia has a collective case of mishearing and misinterpreting what Scott Morrison said, because he is always correct, even when he is wrong. One landslide election victory is rare; a second consecutive landslide victory has never happened before in Australian politics. Until the Western Australian election victory – a 9% swing in 2017, and a 13% swing in 2021. And the Liberal Party has been left with two seats in a chamber of 59 seats. That really is a wipeout – the Liberal Party also lost the seat of Nedlands, home of Gina Rinehart and Kerry Stokes. When the Liberal Party loses a seat like Nedlands, it really means the party might be over. The message? Competent governments are being rewarded at the ballot box. It will be interesting to see what the result will be for an incompetent government, which the federal government clearly is. Their time will come soon.

This week we've seen more political side-effects of the coronavirus bubble up with China making sparring threats against Australia. Over in the US, the left has been starving for new victims and so began eating themselves more aggressively. On the Thursday Uncuckables panel is Tim Wilms Editor in Chief of The Unshackled, David Hiscox Editor of the XYZ and Marcia Leite a local nationalist wife and mother. Marcia was born in Brazil so as part of introducing her to the show audience Tim and Dave asked her to comment on the politics of Brazil including its traditionalist renaissance under President Jair Bolsonaro. Marcia is currently homeschooling her two children during the lockdown and enjoying keeping them safe from cultural Marxism at school. All three panellists are Victorian so are still living under house arrest under Premier Daniel Andrews. The North Territory has set a timetable for freeing its residents. Victoria's Deputy Chief Health Officer compared the Chinese invasion and infection of Australia with Covid19 to Captain Cook's landing at Botany Bay in 1770. Scott Morrison has told Australia's their ticket out of lockdown is to download the CovidSafe tracing app with 3 million have done so far. We have also been told to get our winter flu vaccination. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk allegedly had her flu shot at a press conference on Wednesday though the 7News camera zoomed away the moment when the needle supposedly entered her skin. Communist China was extremely triggered this week with Australia for calling for an independent international investigation into the origins of the coronavirus outbreak. While ordinary Australians are laughing at China's trade threats businessman Andrew Forrest and Kerry Stokes worried about their mining exports have said we should cool it with China and respect their wet markets. Overseas New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio lashed out at the local Jewish community after Orthodox Jews in the city mass gathered for a Rabbi's funeral during lockdown. Actor Jeff Goldblum was criticised when judging a Muslim drag queen for highlighting the religion's homophobia and sexism. Also MeToo feminist and Harvey Weinstein whistleblower actress Rose McGowan has walked away from the Democrat Party for their defence of Joe Biden in sexual assault claims against Joe Biden by former aide Tara Reade.
