What does it take to create a spirits brand that's irresistible to both consumers and potential acquirers? For Elwyn Gladstone, the answer lies in big ideas, bold packaging, and global hustle. Elwyn is the founder of Biggar & Leith, the spirits company behind hits like Malfy Gin, acquired by Pernod Ricard in just four years, and Shanky's Whip, a black Irish whiskey liqueur now sold in 80+ countries and tracking toward 130,000 cases in 2025.In this episode, Elwyn unpacks his approach to building globally resonant brands — from his roots on the teams that launched Hendrick's Gin and Kraken Rum, to creating one of the most original and fastest-scaling brands in Irish whiskey today. With no outside capital and a lean team, he's showing just how far smart storytelling and standout design can take a brand.Elwyn shares:Why differentiation is everything — from liquid to packaging to positioningHow Malfy Gin was built to stand out at shelf with color, Italian provenance, and flavor innovation — and why “lemon gin from Italy” worked everywhereHow Shanky's Whip won over skeptics with a unique flavor (vanilla + caramel + Irish whiskey) and a product story that was fun, not intimidatingWhy Biggar & Leith ignored the “go deep before wide” rule — and built brands in dozens of countries from Day OneHow the team uses a plug-and-play playbook for each market, with toolkits, pricing, and targeted channel strategiesHow Elwyn keeps his team lean (fewer than 10 FT hires), yet executes in 80+ countriesWhat most drinks founders misunderstand about scale, distributor relationships, and brand-building prioritiesLast Call:On Last Call, we're commemorating the 20th anniversary of Granholm, which was decided on May 16, 2005. (AURN News) — Former Congresswoman Erica Lee Carter, daughter of the late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee who was a political legend, is paying tribute to Congressman Sylvester Turner, who died peacefully Wednesday at age 70, according to his office. "Congressman Sylvester Turner was more than a public servant- he was a man of God and quintessential Houstonian who loved our City more than anyone I know," Carter said in a statement to AURN News. "He stood and fought for all people to have access to their American dream." Carter briefly represented Texas's 18th Congressional District following her mother's death in 2024, before Turner assumed the seat in January. The position has now seen three representatives in little more than a year, marking a period of significant transition for the Houston district. "On a personal note, he was kind and a true friend to our family including my mother, the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, father Elwyn, Jason and myself," Carter continued. "We will forever cherish the times we shared. And, we remain committed to the values that he held so dear." The connection between Turner and the Lee-Carter family runs deep in Houston politics. Turner had been in attendance at President Donald Trump's address to the joint session of Congress just one day before his death. Turner previously served as Houston's 62nd mayor. In this episode, we talk with Dr. Glyn Elwyn and Danielle Schubbe about the ethical imperative of including patients in the decision-making process. They discuss how patient goals inform treatment decisions and the challenge of making choices for a “future self” with the lived experiences and preferences of today. Glyn and Danielle talk about this process for early stage breast cancer and some of the tools they've created to help both clinicians and patients navigate shared decision-making, including the three-talk model. Key Highlights: The art of combining clinical guidelines and patient preference to make the best treatment decision. The role of patient goals in making decisions and realizing that decisions are being made for a “future self” using “current self” experiences. Exploring the three-talk model of decision making: team talk, option talk and decision talk. About our guests: Glyn Elwyn BA MD MSc PhD FRCGP is a clinician, researcher, and innovator. He is a tenured professor at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, USA, and at the Scientific Institute for Quality of Healthcare, Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Center, Netherlands. He has Visiting Professor positions at University College London, UK, and at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. After reading the humanities he qualified in medicine, completed a Masters in Education, and obtained his doctorate at Radboud University, Nijmegen, Netherlands, with Professor Richard Grol. Glyn Elwyn studies coproduction, shared decision making, and the application of machine learning to digital recordings of clinical encounters. Danielle Schubbe joined the Coproduction Laboratory in September 2017. She is an external PhD student of Health Services Research at Radboudumc in Nijmegen, Netherlands. She has worked on multiple PCORI-funded studies about shared decision making and the implementation of shared decision making in diverse clinical contexts. Key Moments: 19 minutes: On integrating patient preference with clinical guidelines. “I think most discerning clinicians understand how to work within guidelines, and I think most expert clinicians would say I bring in patient preference as well as know what the rules are saying or what the guidelines are saying.” 31 minutes: On the challenge of making a decision for your future self. “Your decision today about that future is gonna be misinformed because you've never experienced that future yourself.... We cannot predict you in three years' time. How will you feel? We can only ask you to do your best to predict how you feel in the future… and you will be wrong.” 49 minutes: Using the three-talk method of decision making. “Then there's the option talk. That's when you present if there is more than one option for the patient to consider for their treatment. That's when you go over all the nitty gritty of the pros and cons of the two surgical treatment options, in our case for early stage breast cancer,  in a way that is hopefully not really overwhelming for the patient.” This episode was supported by the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and features these PCORI studies by Dr. Glyn Elwyn & Danielle Schubbe - Study 1 and Study 2. In this episode Rob speaks with Shamanic Practitioner, healer and spiritual thinker Elwyn Jones.  Elwyn discovered the art of Spiritual Healing when he first met his wife Caroline in the summer of 2004. This turned out be a life-changing experience, as he spent the next 16 years practicing and promoting this healing modality within the 'Modern Spiritualists' movement. This involved many years of attending and organising weekly healing services in the spiritualist churches of his local area as well as organising training sessions for trainee healers, both  in the UK and also online. For many years Elwyn practised spiritual healing in accordance with the religion and religious philosophy of the 'Modern Spiritualists' movement but in more recent years yearned to follow his own spiritual pathway and has now progressed beyond the restraints of any particular spiritual organisation. He now enjoys a freelance position that allows him to pursue his spiritual pathway exactly how he chooses to. This change in direction has allowed Elwyn to discover the wonderful world of Shamanism and he has now positively experienced what this ancient healing modality has to offer, both for himself and for others. He firmly believes that all spiritual healing originates from 'Source Energy', regardless of what particular discipline is being practiced and also believes that a spiritual lightworke should be humble when forming a two-way working relationship with the Spirit World, emphasising that one's ego should play no part in the equation. Bearing this in mind, he does not view myself as anything special, stating humbly that, "I am simply a very small cog in a great cosmic machine called the universal 'Web of Life'. Elwyn M. Grimes, Jr. is not a private detective for hire. Not yet, anyway. He is, however, a husband, a father of three, and a sweetheart. Before he became any of those things, though, he was a son.In Episode 3 of Badass Records, we talk rap, hip-hop, R&B, grunge, and more. We got a few things wrong in our De La/Tribe discussion, but we didn't sit down together to have a perfect conversation. Instead, we examined a few of our own musical-journey tributaries, and illustrated our appreciation for friends, family, record stores, and stereo systems. While Elwyn tabbed It Was Written by Nas, What's Going On by Marvin Gaye, and Pearl Jam's Ten, I felt a great sense of gratitude learning how his late father helped shape a little bit of the the onset to his son's travels with music and artists and albums.A quick Google will tell you that, "The most common interpretation of a cardinal is a message from a departed loved one. Whenever you see one, it signifies that they are visiting you. They generally appear when you need or miss them the most. They also come through moments of joy and sorrow to let you know they will always be there for you."Now, I can't tell you that this is precisely what Elwyn feels when he sees a cardinal, but I have a hunch it's pretty close, and I not only thank him for his time and his share, but I hope that he feels that be-there-for-you part in his heart whenever he has that experience. Having Elwyn on the podcast was a treat, and even though he backs the Las Vegas Raiders, he kinda makes up for it with his passion for the crimson and blue. Rock Chalk, baby.

What is the difference between a love story and a romance? Which do you prefer?  We sat down at the Bryant Corner Café to talk about love. Valentines Day had everyone thinking about it, but we got into a pretty substantive discussion about the difference between love stories and romances.  Finally, different kinds of love, between different people emerge as our main theme.  Nancy started out, however, by calling our attention to a recently published novel she found remarkable by an author she follows.“A God In Every Stone,” by Kamila Shamsie, is the story of a young English woman who goes on an archeological dig in what would become Pakistan just before WW1 just breaks out. Nancy says, “What we get in this wonderful, wonderful novel is a perspective on WW1 from the Indian soldiers who went to fight for the British and died in great numbers.”  It is also a story of the beginnings of the fight for independence on the sub-continent.  She says it opens up a period of history as only fiction can, bringing new insights and revealing the roots of our present turmoil in the struggles of the past.  It is a challenging book for the way the story is told and for the subject matter, but she says it fabulous. Here are the books we talked about. Some are romances. Most are love stories. What do you think, what is the difference? “Gone With The Wind,” by Margaret Mitchell“Romeo and Juliet,” by William Shakespeare“Soulless” by Gail Carriger, a romance about a young woman who is rudely attacked by a vampire. Nancy loved it. “Astrid and Veronika,” by Linda Olson.  Sharon says two women, one young, one old, share a love, but not a sexual love.“Me Before You,” by JoJo Moyes. A young woman takes care of a wheel-chair bound man.  Nancy loved it because JoJo Moyes doesn’t give into the easy way out andturned what mighthave beenaromance into a love story.“Plainsong,” by Ken Haruf a love story between two old men and the young girl they care for.“Dancing Alone Without Music” by Larry Gildersleeve, who is a friend of Jenny’s. She says it’s an evolution of different loves.Diana Galbadon’s long and involved books. “Life After Life” by Kate Atkinson. Judy says it is about love within a family.“Boys In The Boat,” by Daniel James Brown.  Judy said that what amazed her was the love of Mr. Pocock for the boats themselves and the young men in the boat. So now, when defined so broadly, what book isn’t a love story? “Angle of Repose,” by Wallace Stegner, in which Nancy asks, who loves whom? ( well, she said “who loves who,” but you know how autocorrect can be.)  Another love story by this definition can be Stegner’s “Crossing to Safety.”“Still Alice,” by Lisa Genova“Cocoon of Cancer” An Invitation to Love Deeply,” by Abbe Rolnick with Jim Wiggins“Chocolat,” by Joanne Harris is Roz’s choice. That prompts Nancy to plug her other books, which she says don’t get the attention they deserve. She recommends “Gentlemen and Players.”“Like Water For Chocolate,” by Laura Esquivel“Bettyville,” by George Hodgman is the story of a son who leaves his life to take care of his 90 year old mother.  Susie says it is funny and delightful.“Cold Mountain,” by Charles Fraser“Atonement,” by Ian McEwan“Love In The Time of Cholera,” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez“Love Again,” by Doris Lessing. Not about romantic or erotic love,  but about the trembling between them says Elwyn. He also loves the episode in Tom Sawyer where he explores his passion of Becky Thatcher.“Infinity in the Palm of Her Hand,” by Giaconda Belli“Middlemarch,” by George EliotWrapping, we had shout outs for Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache mysteries, Dorothy Sayers’ romance between Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane and to get into the western genre, “Shane,” by Jack Shaefer about the love of a young boy for his father and the man who rides in to help.“Bridges of Madison County,” by Robert Waller, or “Fanny Hill,” by John Cleland, but now we are getting pretty far afield from love or even romance. These are but insubstantial flings, aren’t they?
