Today, we learned that Special Counsel Jack Smith has moved to dismiss both of the federal cases against Donald Trump; we tell you what that means and what happens next. "The sweetness of low price is really fast, even though the sour of bad service lasts a lot longer. The sweetness is really tempting to jump in and take." --Silver Creek Transportation founder and president Jason Cowan At the top of this week's edition of Overdrive Radio, you'll hear the sage words of Silver Creek Transportation Founder and President Jason Cowan, excerpted above. The past Overdrive Small Fleet Champ was speaking to the difficulties of managing freight contracts with customers in a time like the present, two years after what's been a big filp-flop in demand for carriers of all shapes and sizes. The demand and subsequent freights-rates fall has impacted large and small, from flatbeds and lowboys to tour haulers, dry van pullers and reefer toters, all around the nation. Cowan was talking as part of Overdrive's roundtable on ways to build an owner-operator or small fleet business to weather inevitable down cycles: https://www.overdriveonline.com/business/article/15682400/location-location-how-to-find-that-extra-load-in-your-backyard We hosted the event back in August, sponsored by Bestpass and Fleetworthy Solutions, since rebranded fully under the Fleetworthy name and including the Drivewyze weigh station bypass solution: https://www.overdriveonline.com/business/article/15683690/diesel-hits-lowest-national-average-since-fall-2021 (The combined company aims to be a one-stop shop for bypass, toll collections management and discounts, and fleet-management solutions.) In this edition of the podcast, drop into the first portion of the roundtable that featured, in addition to Cowan, two other leading voices among owner-ops and seasoned veterans in Overdrive's orbit (our own Gary Buchs, and ICV Express owner-operator Ilya Denisenko), all speaking to ways to set your trucking business up to stand out from the crowd, to beat that "sweetness of low price" when it inevitably comes to you from the customer's mouth. Summary In this episode of JSE Direct, Simon Brown discusses various topics including the troubles faced by Anglo Platinum, the performance of leisure stocks, Anglo Gold Ashanti's* acquisition of an Egyptian gold miner, and the impact of two pot withdrawals. He also touches on the future of PGMs, the growth of electric vehicles, and the psychology of markets. Takeaways Anglo Platinum is facing challenges as Anglo American wants to get rid of their stake, causing a sell-off in the market. Anglo Platinum weekly chart The PGMs market is uncertain, with palladium and platinum prices experiencing fluctuations. The World Platinum Council projects a second year of meaningful platinum deficits, with jewelry demand expected to rise. The growth of electric vehicles is impacting the demand for PGMs, but the market is still uncertain. Investors should wait for positive price action before considering investments in PGMs. Anglo Gold Ashanti's acquisition of an Egyptian gold miner raises questions about the use of equity and the future of gold prices. Two pot withdrawals have resulted in over 4 billion rand being withdrawn from the market. Leisure stocks, such as City Lodge and Sun International, have mixed performance, with City Lodge experiencing lower occupancy rates. The growth of sports betting raises concerns about its impact on poorer individuals and the fairness of the industry. Sound Bites "Anglo Platinum has a problem which is perhaps a little more unique than just the PGMs." "There is that initial overhang. A whole lot of people will get Anglo-Platinum shares and say, 'I don't want these' and sell it." "The World Platinum Council is saying we're gonna have deficit again, that's the important point." Access to healthy food should be a right, but in reality, it's often a privilege due to systemic inequalities. What if the food on your plate were not just nourishment but also a reflection of deeper power dynamics and historical struggles? Today's guest, Andrea Freeman, is a trailblazer in food politics, exposing the disturbing ways food has been weaponized throughout American history. In her new book, Ruin Their Crops on the Ground, she uncovers how food policies—from the Trail of Tears to today's school lunch programs—have been systematically used to marginalize and oppress, with echoes of this injustice still reverberating in our modern food systems. As a professor at Southwestern Law, her expertise in Constitutional Law and Food Policy has led her to challenge the structures that keep nutritious food out of reach for vulnerable communities. Her work has been featured in The Washington Post, The New Yorker, and NPR, and she is reshaping the conversation about race, law, and food justice. Join us as we discuss her latest book and explore how the fight for food justice is a fight for equality itself. You won't want to miss this eye-opening discussion on the hidden politics behind what we eat. “There is a long history of the United States using food as a tool of oppression and subordination as part of racial capitalism, as part of colonization and enslavement and then attempts to Americanize immigrants. That part of history had that very intentional racist tone. I mean, that's what it was, right? I mean, that was outwardly the motivation. When you talk about food oppression in the present, it is more baked into the system from that history. And I think instead of describing it as something intentional, we can think of it as something more like deliberate indifference or neglect.” - Andrea Freeman What we discuss in this episode: - How Professor Freeman became interested in advocating for food justice through legal work. - The role of food in the United States' strategy to control and oppress Native American populations. - The historical influence of corporate interests in shaping modern food policies. - Why the fast food industry disproportionately targets BIPOC communities. - Food inequality in the U.S. vs. the U.K. - How schools are used as dumping grounds for surplus food commodities. On the Glossy Week in Review podcast, senior fashion reporter Danny Parisi and international reporter Zofia Zwieglinska break down some of the biggest fashion news of the week. This week, we talk about the confidential IPO filing by Shein in London, the effect of Shein's low-price model on industry players like Amazon and the ever-growing portfolio of LVMH.

As the fast fashion behemoth, Shein, prepares to float on the London Stock Exchange, there's renewed focus on the company's sustainability credentials and conditions for garment workers. Undercover footage from last year's Channel 4 documentary 'Untold: Inside the Shein machine' exposed breaches of Chinese labour laws and Shein's own code of conduct. The company insists it is "investing tens of millions of dollars in strengthening governance and compliance" across its supply chain. But despite concerns, budget-conscious Shein shoppers are enticed by the low prices and highly sophisticated algorithm. We speak to Irish consumers Isobel and Rosie, as well as British journalist Iman Amrani who fronted the Channel 4 programme.Presented by Bernice Harrison. A panel of New York appellate judges has reduced Donald Trump's bond in the New York Attorney General's civil case to $175 million, an amount he can probably afford. Ken and I discuss possible reasons the court took this surprise action — as is typical for this kind of decision in New York, the judges didn't really explain their reasoning — and the likely course of Trump's appeal to come later this year. Meanwhile, in New York Supreme Court (which is the trial court), Trump's criminal trial over falsification of business records starts next month — we have pretrial updates, including on the gag order for the former president modeled on another recent gag order.Plus: why are law clerks quitting Judge Aileen Cannon's chambers? It's a throwback Thursday today as we have JC in the house and we reflect on Volvo's diesel legacy. We're also talking about Fisker lowering MSRP on its troubled Ocean SUVs and the way AI is changing the video game.Show Notes with links:After 45 years and over 9 million diesel vehicles produced, Volvo bids farewell to diesel, a powertrain that once constituted half of its global sales between 2012 and 2016.The final diesel model, an XC90 SUV, has rolled off the production line in Torslanda, Sweden, destined for the World of Volvo museum as a relic of the past. With the Torslanda factory's transition to electric motor production, Volvo aims to transform into an electric-only automaker by 2030, leading the charge among legacy car manufacturers.Former CEO Håkan Samuelsson highlighted the strategic shift away from diesel towards electric vehicles as a commitment to "invest in the future – electric," amidst a declining diesel market in Europe.Fisker is making a daring move to slash prices on its 2023 Ocean models in an effort to boost sales and attract more customers to its electric vehicles. Here's what's happening:Fisker reduced the MSRP of its Ocean Extreme trim by 39%, from $61,499 to $37,499, aiming to make it a more attractive option in the competitive EV market. The price cuts extend across the board, with the Ultra and Sport trims seeing reductions of 34% and 36%, respectively, highlighting Fisker's commitment to affordability. This pricing strategy emerges amidst financial challenges, including the collapse of talks with a potential automaker partner and a warning of delisting from the New York Stock Exchange due to the company's low share price, which may trigger debt defaults.Sora, OpenAI's AI video generator, has swiftly become a focal point in AI-driven content creation, showcasing the vast potential of AI in enhancing artistic expression.Professional creatives, including directors and musicians, have been given early access to Sora and produced content that transcends traditional boundaries, highlighting the technology's role in democratizing high-quality video production.Videos show surrealistic scenes, like robots dancing amidst trash, new breeds of animals like a half fox/half bird and a half whale/half octopus, and the odyssey of the Voyager's golden record through space, showcasing Sora's capability to bring the unimaginable to life.Despite Sora's promising applications, concerns about the source of its training data and the ethical implications of AI-generated content linger, casting a shadow over its widespread adoption.Another question is how much generating AI video with Sora will cost, with some estimating around $100 per 1 minute of generated video"When you're not replicating the old but bringing life to new and impossible ideas, that's when Sora becomes most powerful," shared filmmaker Paul Trillo, emphasizing the innovative spirit that Sora embodies.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

We're about to show you the eight best housing markets you've never heard of before. If you want boring, unsexy markets that give you mailbox money every month, have growing populations, cheap homes, and strong economies, bring your notepad because you probably haven't thought of any of these markets before. We sent our On the Market researchers on a quest to find the country's most boring, underrated, yet promising rental property markets—and we're sharing the list with you today. From college football towns to underrated beach cities and strong manufacturing centers, almost all these cities have cash-flowing real estate where you can find steals and deals easier than already-tapped markets like Miami, D.C., or Denver. Some of these markets are on the smaller side. Still, with housing affordability tanking, these cheaper states could see a massive influx in population as coastal workers seek financially stable inland cities. So, if you've been saving up to buy your next deal but can't find anything worth investing in around your area, check out ANY of these eight markets because if you don't buy in them, we will (and Henry already has)! In This Episode We Cover: Eight boring, stable, cash-flowing real estate markets you can invest in NOW The East Coast beach city with MASSIVE population growth and cheap home prices The college football towns where you can make a killing on student housing Staying away from single-industry markets and what happens when employment starts to fall The state pushing for zero percent state tax that could see a significant population boost The growing city where Henry is gobbling up rental properties as fast as he can And So Much More!
