When we shift our focus from delivering a message towards reflecting on what questions to ask, a world of possibilities emerges. However, sometimes the fastest route to asking better questions comes from self-awareness and focusing on our mindset in relation to the task. She credits this passion for learning as having been her saving grace and the basis for all she has developed. Are you asking questions to build or to tear down? What is the difference between a learner and a judger mindset? Episode 121 ( Marilee is based in New Jersey) In this conversation we explore: The polar opposites of learner versus judger mindsets How to recognize your current mindset How to shift your mindset with the choice map How to be a stronger leader by asking stronger questions How to ask better questions of yourself Why decisions can be more productive when you are in learner mode About Marilee Adams Written 4 books, in August released two new books: (1) 4th edition of Change Your Questions, Change Your Life: 12 Powerful Tools for Leadership, Coaching, and Results—a business and leadership fable. (2) Change Your Questions Change Your Life Workbook: Master Your Mindset with Question Thinking. Note that the fable book has sold over 400,000 copies in 22 languages, mostly by word of mouth. Marilee is the Founder and CEO of the Inquiry Institute, a consulting, coaching and educational organization that works internationally with organizations and government agencies large and small. Marilee is a Senior Brown Belt in Karate, though that was 20 years ago; these days it's mostly yoga for her! ----- Download your free copy of the Choice Map here and start making more productive choices about your mindset www.InquiryInstitute.com Excerpts from this conversation with Marilee Adams I think the most powerful leaders are the ones who can ask the most powerful questions and who encourage people around them to do the same thing. ----- 04:59 And you you raise the the learner mindset versus the judging mindset. And that's something that you talk in your book about. Please tell us, what's the difference? What's the distinction? And why is it important? 05:13 Okay, I'm gonna describe each and I'm also going to show you a model that makes it easier to do that. So first of all, let's assume that all of us, every human being has two mindsets. One I call judger. And the other I call learner, it's important to remember we all have both, both are normal. And we will always have them, because we are not only neurologically hardwired for them, but we're also socially ingrained in them. So when I talk about being in judger, mindset, that means that I'm being more close minded more, putting myself or others down, being more judgmental, because judging means judgement fall. And it can lead to a lot of self doubt, and also interacting with other people in ways that are not respectful and may actually be dismissive. So, but that's part of all of us. And even if we don't like that part, that doesn't mean it's not there. And it's really useful to say, oh, yeah, that's me to accept all the parts of me. And if we can speak that we would be speaking from learner mindset, which we all have. And when we're in learner mindset, we're more open minded, more accepting, more able to look from other people's point of view, and be dedicated to what can I create and learn in this situation with this person? So we all have both mindsets all the time. What makes the powerful is that when we can observe the mindset we're in, and then ask ourselves, will this mindset let's say, it's judger? Well, this mindset helped me get to where I want to go in this situation. Most of the time, the answer's no. But unless we can observe our mindsets, we might not even notice that. So it's important to note that I'm just going to, I'm going to show this and I'm going to make a comment about it to your listeners and your viewers. So this right, here it is, I get this confused. But this is called the choice map. And we all have both mindsets, the judger mindset, and the learner mindset. And at any moment, we're in one or the other. And if we're in if we notice, we're in judger, we can start to use the switching lane. So it becomes a very practical how to. So I know that this podcast is mostly auditory, which means people are not seeing it. But I do want to say that if you're interested in the choice map, go to my website, which is www inquiry institute.com. So you can go to my website, you can get the choice map for free. So there's a protocol for how to do it, you take a short quiz, which is also gives you some useful information. But then you can have the choice map and use it. And it's the core of not only change your questions, change your life, but all the other books that I've written and the work that I do that George, you mentioned a bit in the beginning. So does that answer your question? ----- 25:25 Do you discourage people from being the judge? 25:33 I would change that question a little bit. So, when they learn about the model of learner judger, and they start to see what the costs have been in their lives, and in particular situations of being in judger, rather than learner, then I don't need to convince them of anything, they start to go, oh, this problem occurred because I was in judger. And I was just obstinate, maybe there's a different way to go about it. And truthfully, judger is, is human beings, it's always our default position. It's where we go. It's when we go reactive, it's it's fear based. And it's very useful to accept that part of us. Because it is part of us, and then to see what there is to learn from it. It's also important, George not to go judge her on other people when they are in judgement. Because then you end up with, like judges squared. Moving to a position where you can actually listen to each other, relate to each other, and maybe come up with some shared solutions together. ----- ----more---- Your Intended Message is the podcast about how you can boost your career and business success by improving your communication skills. “Are the questions I'm asking going to help or hurt? Are they going to get me what I want? Are they going to be useful to others? If the answer is no, what different questions could I ask that would benefit me and the other person and the situation?”, asks Dr. Marilee Adams, Ph.D. Marilee's research focuses on the impact of language, the importance of mindset, and the importance of asking the right questions in the right way. She coined the term ‘question thinking' in reference to the nature of thought, the questions we ask ourselves, and the mindsets from which we ask the questions. Today she is the founder of the Inquiry Institute, a sought after public speaker and coach, and the author of two books, The Art of The Question and Change Your Questions, Change Your Life. Dr. Marilee Adams explains that the questions we ask ourselves and others are heavily influenced by the mindset we are in at the time. She shares that there are two primary mindsets that we ask questions from, the judger mindset and the learner mindset. When you can notice which mindset you are in, you can consider whether that mindset is actually serving you and your choices. The learner mindset is best for connection and collaboration, whereas the judger mindset tends to be more critical. Today's leaders need now more than ever to really consider how they ask questions and what questions they ask. The old style of top-down leadership is no longer as effective and will not lead to as much innovatio. It is pivotal to not only be in the right mindset and ask the right questions, but to listen and be cautious of our inner dialogues. Changing the questions we use and the mindset we ask them from can change everything about our interactions with each other and the world around us. It can lead to innovation that would never have been possible before. We all think in questions, so to really understand each other, we need to consider how we frame those questions and whether they are going to be useful to others or help us really get what we want out of the interaction. When you can recognize yourself in a judger mindset and switch into a learner mindset so you can really value the insight of others, incredibly positive change can occur. Quotes: “The questions we ask ourselves and others are also dramatically influenced by the mindset we're in at the moment when we ask them. And of course, that mindset impacts the people that we're communicating with and that we're asking questions to.” (9:15-9:31 | Marilee) “Are the questions I'm asking going to help or hurt? Are they going to get me what I want? Are they going to be useful to others? If the answer is no, what different questions could I ask that would benefit me and the other person and the situation?” (10:10-10:28 | Marilee) “The old model of leadership, like top down, the leader has all the answers and everybody else salutes, that is just not going to make it. It doesn't make it any more. And the only way that you gather engagement and trust and real collaboration with people is by asking them questions, by answering their questions, by encouraging them to ask you questions, and encouraging them to ask each other questions.” (31:14-31:45 | Marilee) “Our questions also frame how we listen. So if I listen to someone with the question, ‘What dumb thing are they going to say, now?' I am going to hear something different than if I listened with the question, ‘What invaluable thing will they say now?' I'll actually hear differently.” (32:59-33:20 | Marilee) Links: Mentioned in this episode: Learn more about Mike Horne on Linkedin Email Mike at mike@mike-horne.com Find more about Leading People and Culture with Authenticity Learn more about Marilee Adams Website: Inquiryinstitute.com Email: marilee.adams@inquiryinstitute.com Facebook: Facebook.com/questionthinking. Secrets of Attorney Marketing with Richard Jacobs of Speakeasy Marketing Inc.
Good evening, this is Richard Jacobs. Today is day 11 of the 13 unlucky days of monsters attempting to suck the blood from your law practice. We've talked about client monsters: the ghost, the backseat driver, the nervous nelly, the vampire, the wimpy, the backstabber, the bungler, the narcissist, and the canary. Then we talked about the marketing monsters: the branding barbarian, the social media serpent, the Rip Van Winkle of referrals, the follow-up fumbler, the SEO siren, the paid leads pusher, the new client hopium dealer, the lowball leech, the omnipresent omnivore, and the budget bully. Now, we are talking about some of the most pernicious monsters: staff, family, and friends, (unfortunately). We talked about the strangler, and now we are going to talk about the devil's advocate and the bride of Frankenstein. The devil's advocate is a staff member or maybe a fellow attorney who is just a devil's advocate in everything. Any idea you come up with, any client you take on, any case that you work through with a partner, or any case that you have a staff member help on, they are always pointing you to the dark side. “What if this happens?” or “I don't think this is going to work,” or “Maybe we should reconsider…” What this does is turn you into a “two steps forward and 1.9999 steps back” person, and you essentially go nowhere. You just jiggle back and forth in position. Meanwhile, the market changes around you, other firms get clients and try new things, and win or lose. The firms that just kind of jiggle back and forth and don't aggressively market, try new things, or adapt to new technologies like live chat, texting clients, or using Zoom for intakes, start to lose ground to other firms and younger attorneys who may have 20 fewer years of experience than they do. They start to eat your lunch, they start to take over, and you start to get very frustrated. At times, you might feel like a dinosaur. You've got to watch out for these devil's advocates; they mean well—they really do—but unfortunately, they have to be coached. If a staff member, family, friend, or anyone else is being the devil's advocate, say to them, “I really appreciate it. You are a good sounding board and you are a great devil's advocate, but I want you to deliberately think, ‘How can I do this?' What advice would you have for me if you knew that there was nothing I could do and that something had to be done and you at least wanted to help me do it as best I could?” Change their frame of mind so that they are supportive instead of a devil's advocate because the devil's advocate only goes so far. If you have idea after idea after idea and that's all you get back, it's going to take the air out of your balloon. It's going to deflate you, and eventually, you'll give up and just sink into mediocrity and helplessness. You won't want to engage with your marketing firms and you won't want to move your firm forward. You are going to lose ground and just lament that you didn't go anywhere while other firms surpass you. As you know, there's a lot of competition in the world of attorneys, especially this year with COVID. The sands are shifting, the tectonic plates are shifting big time. There are big-time winners, and there are big-time losers. You've got to be either a winner or a loser going forward because things are changing dramatically. Watch out for these devil's advocates. Again, they mean well, so turn them around so they help you instead of hurt you. Now, the bride of Frankenstein. I could have called it the spouse of Frankenstein, but in the movie, it was called the bride of Frankenstein. Forgive me if instead of a bride, you have a groom; it's your partner or spouse who is unsupportive. You've tried things in the past, and they are worried about the finances, they are worried about the kids, and they are worried about your financial situation. I can't give you relationship advice here, but I want to point it out. If you have a spouse or a partner who is unsupportive, it can easily suck the life out of you and make you do nothing. I can't tell you to get rid of your partner or spouse. All I can tell you is to be aware that the approval or the withholding of approval of a spouse and the withholding of other things can really make life very difficult. I don't know how you are going to manage it. Again, I don't even want to go there; I just want you to be aware of it, and if it is a factor in your life, it is going to affect your practice, and it's obviously going to affect your personal life. It's going to affect everything. The only thing I can recommend is that you not let yourself be in a situation like that for too long. Then again, you have to decide how long “too long” is for you. Unfortunately, the longer it goes on, the less likely it is to change or improve unless action is taken by both parties. Of course, take your side of responsibility for the whole situation; it might not just be your partner…it might be you too. There are definitely great resources out there that can really help you. I recently read the book, Change Your Questions, Change Your Life by Marilee Adams, PhD. I am literally just about to finish it, but it's a really great book that can help you with any issues that you have. It can apply to most of the monsters you deal with (maybe even all of them), and this monster in particular because it's such a tricky one. I recommend you check out that book. It's excellent. There's also 5 Love Languages, which sounds kind of funny, but it's a fantastic book. There are five different ways that people express love in any relationship, and you'd be very surprised. When I read through this book and looked at the people around me, like my wife, my kids, and my other relationships, it's literally like wearing a new pair of glasses where you see people in a way you've never seen them before. It's really cool. One love language is physical touch. Another is acts of service, where we do something for someone and they feel loved. Another is quality time, where you spend quality time with them. The fourth love language is gifts, and I forget the fifth one. It is an excellent book. I highly recommend these two books because they'll take the friction out of a lot of your relationships and really help you have a smoother time. If my wife is mad at me, it can ruin my whole day. I'm not saying she's bad or blaming her or anything—I do plenty of things wrong to annoy her—but I know it's important when a partner or spouse is not supportive; it really can take the wind out of your sails, so it's really important to address it. It's not nice to call it a monster, but I'm including it. I hope this helps you. On today 12 tomorrow.
Are You a Victim or are you a Person of Action? Exploring Our Post-Pandemic Mindset and Changing it for Good "Something bad happened to me!" We can process the emotion in the best possible way. We all have a person of action and a victim inside of us. When a problem comes, we can blame others. But if we choose to become a person of action we decide this is OUR problem. Making the shift out of the default victim to the transforming Person of Action. Notice when you're taking the victim role. The clues can show up in your body: tensed jaw, tight shoulders, upset stomach, etc. Coping with stress can also show up in eating junk food and treats. Maybe you're looking outside of yourself for a solution or begin blaming others. Instead ask yourself "How can I move forward?" Be vulnerable. Share how you're feeling with a significant other. "What am I going through right now?" Ask better questions. "What does this make possible?" "What would someone I admire do in this situation?' What are we responsible for? There are things outside of our control but we have control over a lot if we change our perspective. We can take some action and take a different approach. Our Amazon products were deemed non-essential and our income was on hold as a result of Covid-19. Example of unhelpful, victim questions: "Why? Why me? Why is this happening? Why is this happening to us?" We had to accept our situation because there was nothing we could do about it. Our Airbnb was also shut down as U.S. travel came to a halt. We were victims of the pandemic, losing our livelihood. Maybe you too are in the middle of a trying, difficult circumstance. It's still possible to make progress while frustrated. Grieve with personal responsibility. Acknowledge the emotion and also ask "What's my next step?" Bad things happen in life and we respond to it in the most honoring way to yourself and the people around you. I feel like a zen master with that title. We are coming up on the end of the year; the time to be reflective, take stock of what we have accomplished, and plan for all that we hope to accomplish in the coming year. And in order to make this time truly effective, there is one primary area on which we should focus: the questions we are asking. We don't think about questions. They just exist - like nouns, verbs and Pauly Shore. When I ask my clients to define what a question is, they give a variety of answers that don't quite ecompass the purpose of questioning. A question, to define it, is a request for information where you legitimately don't know the answer. This year I've spoken often about the value of learning and entering situations with a “learning mindset.” It's not my unique idea; there's plenty of information out there on it. But, from what I have experienced over the years, there is no better way to get past any challenge that comes my way. And in order to have a learning mindset, we need to eliminate assumptions. A tall order, for sure, but the way to do that is to ask a good question. I think back to corporate life and how often people were told to work on “listening skills.” That's nice, but they are irrelevant if we are not asking the right questions. I think also of all the questions people did ask during meetings or over e-mail, dripping with sarcasm, agenda or snark. These aren't questions - they are judgmental statements. We do it in our home life as well. Over time, we create assumptions. Due to the Principle of Least Effort, we know that our brains will take every opportunity to work as lightly as possible. So it jumps over details. Those details become assumptions, and in doing so, we fill the gaps with our own perspective, and that affects how we interact with people. The questions we are asking ourselves are impactful to our own learning about ourselves. Over the next two weeks I'll cover the questions to ask yourself to recap your year and to plan for the new year. Your capability, your growth, your levels of accomplishment and happiness and joy and sparkles are all a reflection of the questions you ask yourself. No judgment, pure curiosity. You'll be shocked at what you can learn about yourself. If I can recommend some books on the topic, I'd say the two best on questions that I have read are: Change Your Questions, Change Your Life by Marilee Adams and The Art of the Focused Conversation by The Institute of Cultural Affairs. Happy reading!
I feel like a zen master with that title. We are coming up on the end of the year; the time to be reflective, take stock of what we have accomplished, and plan for all that we hope to accomplish in the coming year. And in order to make this time truly effective, there is one primary area on which we should focus: the questions we are asking. We don’t think about questions. They just exist - like nouns, verbs and Pauly Shore. When I ask my clients to define what a question is, they give a variety of answers that don’t quite ecompass the purpose of questioning. A question, to define it, is a request for information where you legitimately don’t know the answer. This year I’ve spoken often about the value of learning and entering situations with a “learning mindset.” It’s not my unique idea; there’s plenty of information out there on it. But, from what I have experienced over the years, there is no better way to get past any challenge that comes my way. And in order to have a learning mindset, we need to eliminate assumptions. A tall order, for sure, but the way to do that is to ask a good question. I think back to corporate life and how often people were told to work on “listening skills.” That’s nice, but they are irrelevant if we are not asking the right questions. I think also of all the questions people did ask during meetings or over e-mail, dripping with sarcasm, agenda or snark. These aren’t questions - they are judgmental statements. Thinking BIG! That’s what my guest, Geraldine Carter, and I will be talking about on today’s show. We’re having a conversation about where we play small, how to think bigger, and the importance of mindset. Geraldine shares with us her favorite tips for having a more positive growth-oriented mindset, and I share some of mine, as well. Come join us! Geraldine Carter specializes in coaching CPAs to help them grow their accounting practice. Her podcast, She Thinks Big, supports business owners to think bigger about what is possible while creating new thought patterns that lead to higher levels of profit. Geraldine co-founded a company in 2008 that has gone on to generate millions for sustainability, completed an Ironman in 12 hours, and is an ICF Certified Coach with more than 800 hours of mindfulness training. In her spare time, she rides her mountain bike in her hometown of Missoula, Montana, or runs after her 2 tiny kiddos. Show Highlights: Geraldine’s favorite tool to share with clients that really helps them grasp the ideas of mindset being at choice is borrowed from Mel Robbins: the “54321” with breath behind it. When you’re feeling annoyed, agitated, upset, stuck, you take 5 breaths, and you count back from 5. Dr. Sabrina’s favorite tool is The Choice Map™ by Dr. Marilee Adams. It’s a visual, and we get to choose whether we want to go down the Learner Path or the Judger Path. If at any time we find ourselves going to the Judger Pit, which is where the Judger Path takes us, we can change our questions to get ourselves on the Learner Path. How mindset plays in to designing your business so that you can reclaim your life. Geraldine explains how to move past an identity crisis in order to fulfill the role that we would like to be creating. Dr. Sabrina discusses where fear comes from, and how the mindsets that are grounded in fear no longer serve us. Same thinking = same results. Where money leaks out of our business because of our mindset: Accounts receivable over 90 days & various examples How to have the awkward conversations Tips for course-correcting boundary issues: self awareness observing the thoughts that go through your head being curious with kindness mindfulness that it’s happening asking yourself what can you do differently the next time it happens Observing the impact (to yourself and others) of not keeping boundaries can often be a motivator to do things differently next time. How to meld bookkeeping, which, by nature, is historical, and coaching, which is looking forward. Focusing on wins and successes: do more of what works! The Living Experiment: Rethink Your Choices. Reclaim Your Life.
This week on The Living Experiment we're talking about Questions — the value of asking more of them, and the potential of making inquiry a regular life practice. Rainer Maria Rilke once advised a young poet to "live in the questions," and that advice can serve all of us. So here, we share the questions we've found most helpful in keeping us on a good path, as well as the questions that tend to get us in trouble. From the reality-challenging questions that define Byron Katie's "The Work," to the Learner and Judger questions that make up Marilee Adams' Choice Map, we explore the evolution that is possible when we ask, rather than assume. Finally, we offer you some experiments to help you consider the questions you might benefit from asking in your own life. Get full show notes and resources at http://livingexperiment.com/questions/

The Living Experiment: Rethink Your Choices. Reclaim Your Life.
Shame is universal. It touches every age, gender, and ethnicity — from a child who wets the bed to a presidential candidate who is caught off guard in a debate. Shame operates at your core, often playing out in a debilitating combination of aggression, withdrawal, and perfectionism. But how can you address shame if you have difficulty acknowledging or talking about it? In this week's episode of The Living Experiment, we discuss shame openly, flushing it out of hiding and into the light of day. We talk about where shame comes from, how men and women feel it differently, and how it impacts relationship dynamics. We also suggest steps to shift from shame toward self-acceptance and insight. "Shame" Episode Highlights The life-long and inescapable human condition of shame (3:25) Defining (and differentiating) shame and guilt (6:30) The three primary behavioral expressions of shame (7:25) Secondary and tertiary consequences, including communication problems (7:50) The subtle differences between imposing shame and offering compassionate guidance (10:00) How shame that develops very early in life can manifest in our adult lives and relationships (12:50) Perfectionism as a response to childhood shame (14:25) Shame as a potential outcome of a religious upbringing (15:15) How your own sense of worth influences the way you accept or judge others (17:55) Dr. Marilee Adams' "Choice Map" and the two paths — judger or learner — we can take in any stressful situation (18:45) Gender-specific shame triggers and responses (23:55) Dallas's early experience with shame, and the shadow it cast (26:00) Pilar's experience of shame resulting from childhood sexual abuse (29:50) How (and why) we make sense of irrational thoughts and situations, and why that's not always healthy (31:00) How shame shows up in human behavior (33:50) Dr. Brené Brown's outing of the universal, destructive experience of shame (37:45) Shame-based morality vs. the natural consequences of potentially problematic actions, such as over-consumption of porn or food (38:45) The power of acknowledging and exposing sources and feelings of shame (42:20) How Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy can help people evolve traumatic experiences (44:20) “De-cloaking” — risking the truth about yourself with close friends, and the positive feedback loop that can create (47:10) How to re-frame and diminish shame with self-awareness and compassion (53:00) Making peace with your life experiences — good and bad — to more fully understand and accept yourself and others for who they are (55:40) How a difficult divorce can catalyze the work of self-discovery (57:25) The vicious cycle of poor communication between men and women – women's unarticulated desires leading to men's misguided efforts to fulfill them — and how to reverse the pattern (1:00:00) Framing failure without shame rather than denying failure happened (1:05:00) Suggested experiments for the week (1:08:20) This Week's Experiments Dallas suggests: Identify and compassionately acknowledge your shame. On a piece of paper, write “I have shame about . . .” and list all of your feelings of shame. On the last line of the page, write, “And it's OK.” Calling shame by its name and accepting yourself sets the stage for growth. Pilar suggests: In the moments you feel shame, change the questions you ask. The next time you're tempted to go down a path of self-retribution (e.g, why am I so stupid; what's wrong with me; what will people think?), ask neutral, non-judging learner questions such as: “What just happened?” “What's useful here?” “What do I want now?” “What would I like to have happen?” “What can I learn?” “What am I actually responsible for?” “What's possible?” “What are my choices?” “What would be the best use of my time, energy, and attention now?” Embrace shame-tinged experiences as fertile ground for growth and self-honoring rather than self-reproach. Look for opportunities to reframe shame-based experiences from your early life to reclaim your sense of worth as a human being now. Het boek heet : Change your questions, change your life, geschreven door Marilee Adams.
