I was so excited when Richard E Grant agreed to be my guest on Outspoken Beauty. While he's a hugely loved and well known actor, many people don't realise that he's also the creator of the most beautiful fragrance brand and that each scent in his collection bottles his memories and impressions of a time and place in his beloved London.During the episode we chat about the perfume he made for a girlfriend aged 12, why a holiday with Anya Hindmarch proved to be the start of a whole new fragrant journey for him and the fragrance that his beloved (and sadly departed) wife wore. We also delve into some of his incredible fragrances and why his brand "Jack" is so special.I hope you enjoy getting to know this iconic man and his passion for fragrance.

Why are we all obsessed with dresses? SEPARATES scream the fashion pages. SUITS they howl. But the thing about dresses is - there's only one thing to decide on in the morning. And once that decision is made then boots and belts and shoes and earrings are just fun and games. Considering we lean so hard on dresses, we are thrilled to have the dress queen on the podcast today: the authority, the grand fromage of frocks. Isabel Spearman styled fashion luminaries and worked for big, beautiful brands like Anya Hindmarch, before founding the addictive Daily Dress Edit in 2019. Championing sustainable, small businesses and showing us all sorts of swishy sensations across the price spectrum, she is a dress devotee. And she's here to tell us where we need to look now for this summer's low maintenance, high yield solutions. In other words, she's here to tell us how to get dressed. Thank God. We talk about the joy of the denim dress, how to wear a floral and not look like it's 2017 and Isabel's secret favourite dress designers... PS: This podcast was bravely brought to you by Symprove. At the beginning of the 1990s, London's fashion scene was sleepy and small. But not for long: Following the groundbreaking success of young British designer John Galliano at Givenchy in the 1980s, other young graduates of the London art school Central Saint Martins began to push the fashion world's boundaries. Hussein Chalayan, Alexander McQueen, and Stella McCartney garnered attention with their provocative presentations, complex image-making, and challenges to established fashion rules, all on very limited budgets—at least at the beginning. Soon the Paris fashion establishment woke up to – and adopted – this new generation of fashion thinkers whose creativity had been forged in the post-punk cultural stew of 90s London. Interviews in order of appearance: Mark Holgate, Anya Hindmarch, John Galliano, Hussein Chalayan, Camilla Nickerson, Laird Borelli-Persson, Karen Elson, Andrew Bolton, Shaun Leane, Jenny Capitain, Tonne Goodman, Stella McCartney. In spite of the growth of online in recent years, physical shops are still the backbone of the retail industry. Anya chats to us about what sustainability means to her, how her business has evolved over the years and why she has decided to go back to her roots through the creation of the Village in Chelsea.
Climate friendly farming doesn't just impact the food on our plates. This week's guest, fashion designer Anya Hindmarch, recognises that the fashion industry's huge part to play in reducing waste and the use of toxic chemicals, and sourcing materials in a more sustainable way. Anya explains to Patrick how she was inspired by the closed-loop system that exists in nature to design a compostable leather bag, addressing the difficulties of sourcing regenerative hides, and using methods of production which prevent the leech of chemicals into the soil when the bag comes to the end of its life. Patrick and Anya discuss the potential of the Global Farm Metric to translate into clear standards and labelling for customers wishing to shop sustainably - so watch this space!

In today’s podcast Louise speaks to one of the world’s most renowned fashion accessory designers, Anya Hindmarch. An environmentalist with philanthropy at the core of many of her campaigns Anya is famous for her creativity and craftsmanship when it comes to designing and producing her beautiful bags. Anya talks about publishing her new book, launching an ambitious new project in London and the story behind her latest collection ‘I Am A Plastic Bag’.
Today I'm thrilled to be joined by one of the most established names in British luxury, Anya Hindmarch. She is a true leader in her field, the designer of the most beautiful handbags, a passionate environmental activist and now the author of a brand new book, If In Doubt Wash Your Hair. She is known for using fashion as a force for good. Back in 2004, her £5 white tote bags, with the slogan, “I'm not a plastic bag” written on them, were one of the world's most in demand items. More recently, during the pandemic, she's worked with University College London to design a special 'holdster' for front-line NHS workers to wear, along with thousands of PPE gowns. Anya's recent book, If in Doubt Wash Your Hair, is a part memoir, part self-help book which aims to teach readers how to be kind to themselves and live a little more boldly. It's an uplifting manual for life offering practical tips and advice on how to make women feel better about themselves. Anya is refreshingly honest and shares her own struggles and the ways she has managed to tackle her own self-doubt issues. In this episode, we discuss her very exciting new project, The Anya Village, which is set to takeover Pont Street this month and includes a café, a plastic shop and a pop up salon for 'Shampoo and Therapy'. We also talk about how the past year has been a very busy time for her and how her priorities have evolved to reflect the changing times - such as her passion for circularity of materials and reducing plastic going into landfill. I really did learn a lot from this conversation and hope you do too! *** Life and Soul is hosted by Emma Forbes, produced by Georgie Rutherford and edited by Steve Campen. This week I am joined by handbag designer Anya Hindmarch for episode 5 of season 4. The witty, wise and tirelessly energetic Anya Hindmarch, always open-minded and willing to share her wide-open heart, talks to me about her latest amusement. Anya has taken over a post-pandemic empty street in the Knightsbridge area of London - and transformed it into an Anya Village, offering the things she loves and believes in - from her famous handbags to products that are less harmful to the planet. She has also just published a book, If In Doubt, Wash Your Hair, which is filled with advice on how to be happy. Her words are profound, defining the character of a woman whose life would be considered quite a challenge: she created a business at age 18, when she came back from Italy carrying a handbag that was to define her life. Five children later - three inherited from her widowed husband and two of their own - Anya continues with her world-wide accessories business - and with dollops of fun and a CBE awarded by the Queen. - The Anya Village on Pont Street London, SW1X opened on 17th May 2021. - If In Doubt, Wash Your Hair: A Manual For Life, Bloomsbury Publishing, 2021 Produced by Natasha Cowan @tashonfash Edited by Tim Thornton @timwthornton Music by @joergzuber Graphics by Paul Wallis To find Suzy's articles visit https://suzymenkes.com ...find Suzy on Instagram @suzymenkes and Twitter @thesuzymenkes See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Chef Raymond Blanc began to write a recipe book at the beginning of 2020 inspired by the fast and simple cooking of French scientist Edouard de Pomaine and by his mother. He had no idea the world was about to change. A few months later, Raymond was self-isolating when he found that his mother had died in France and then he was hospitalised with Covid for a month over Christmas and into January. He joins Nikki Bedi and Richard Coles to explain how Simply Raymond: Recipes from Home reflects how the past year has changed his approach to food and life. Kathryn Heyman experienced a horrific assault in her early 20s on her way home from a party. In a bid to escape the trauma, Kathryn joined four trawlermen on the Timor Sea where she was unexpectedly able to heal from the wounds of the past. She joins us to talk about her new memoir Fury. Actor Joseph Marcell has been well-known to British theatre audiences for 50 years, beginning his stint at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1972 and now sitting on the board of The Globe Theatre. He is globally famous for a different reason, having played the role of British butler Geoffrey in hit 90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which launched the career of Will Smith and is still in syndication on television networks around the world. Asian Network presenter Yasser got his first break in TV when he was 12. He talks about discovering a different side to Pakistan when he went there as a DJ, being a 2012 Olympic Torch Bearer and shares stories from his Ramadan tracker, which is discovering out how Muslims are celebrating Ramadan around the world. And we have the Inheritance Tracks of designer Anya Hindmarch. Producer: Laura Northedge Editor: Eleanor Garland
Are you suffering from an acute case of doubt? Then, according to this week’s guest, it’s time to wash your hair. Anya Hindmarch is the poster girl for kindness in an industry not renowned for its compassion. A leader in her field and a few others - Anya is brilliance in human form: creative, generous, innovative, organised. She has written a book called If In Doubt, Wash Your Hair, a guide to being kind to yourself and living a little more boldly. And who doesn’t need a dose of that?
In 2016 Mia Ayliffe Chung was killed at a remote farmworkers’ hostel while backpacking in Australia. What she didn’t realise at the time and what her mum Rosie Ayliffe later discovered was backpackers like Mia were exposed to widespread exploitation including sexual harassment, inadequate health and safety and substandard living conditions. Since Mia's death Rosie has been campaigning to improve conditions for young casual workers, helping to change the law in three of the six states of Australia. She has written a book about Mia called Far From Home. Anya Hindmarch is an entrepreneur, a global business woman, mother of five and a stepmother. Now she's turned 50 she's turned her hand to writing - putting together A Manual for Life with the very tongue in cheek title "If In Doubt Wash Your Hair". In the UK now more than a third (34.3%) of FTSE 350 board positions are now held by women. But what do boards do? And how can you get on one? To discuss these questions Emma is joined by Dambisa Moyo, renowned economist, named as one of Time Magazine's Top 100 Most Influential People in the World and author of a new book How Boards Work; and Fiona Hathorn, CEO of Women on Boards UK. As of Tuesday this week residents leaving their care home to go for a walk or to visit a loved one’s garden no longer have to isolate for two weeks on their return. But actor Ruthie Henshall is concerned about the potential ‘grey area’ around this relaxation of the rules which could continue to limit some families’ access. Ruthie, along with the group Rights for Residents, has delivered a petition with 300,000 signatures to the House of Commons. She explains her concerns and what she would like the government to do. Presented by Emma Barnett Producer: Louise Corley
Entrepreneur and fashion designer Anya Hindmarch is the queen of practicality. The bags for which her eponymous label is famous have long been adored for their pockets, compartments, zips and the fact they're not weighed down with hardware - I mean seriously who wants a bag that's too heavy to carry when it's EMPTY?! It's that super-sensible but fun, creative approach that saw her lauded as Accessories Designer of the year at the British Fashion Awards. So it's no surprise that her never-fail piece of advice - if In doubt, wash your hair - has become the title of her first book - Part life manual, part memoir, part business book and all “let's be having you”.It also sums her up perfectly - light-hearted on the surface yet with a fiercely common sensical core. Anya joined me over zoom (where else?!) to talk self-doubt and learning to have faith in your own ability, bringing inclusivity and responsibility to the fashion industry, why emotion is a female superpower, being proudly not cool and why she's passionate about pockets. You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at Bookshop.org, including the book that accompanies this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too by Sam Baker and If In Doubt Wash Your Hair by Anya Hindmarch. The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Emily Sandford. This week we reflect on the series and our own Worn Stories. Listen in to hear what we consider to be the most meaningful piece in our closets and how it ended up there. Today I’m joined by one of the most established names in British luxury - the designer and businesswoman, Anya Hindmarch. Anya started her accessories business as a teenager, inspired by the leather bags she saw on her travels in Italy. Within a few short years, her designs were stocked by some of the most prestigious fashion outlets around the world. She is known for using fashion as a force for good. Back in 2004, her £5 white tote bags, with the slogan “I’m not a plastic bag” written on them, graced the shoulders of A-listers around the world, sparking a global frenzy with queues of over 80,000 people outside Sainsbury’s shops, trying to get their hands on the canvas bags. More recently, during the pandemic, she’s worked with University College London to design a special holster for frontline NHS workers to wear, along with thousands of PPE gowns. Just as fashion takes inspiration from cultures and destinations all around the world, so too does Anya, whose travel diaries take us from Morocco and Myanmar to Japan, Italy and glamorous Mustique.Destination recap:Marrakech, Morocco El Fenn, MoroccoKasbah Beldi, Morocco Cap Ferrat, France Florence, Italy Mustique Park Hyatt, Tokyo, JapanTokyo, JapanPatagoniaEthiopiaBeirutEgyptIndia Inle Lake, Myanmar This episode is in memory of my beloved uncle, Anthony Lean. BoF’s Imran Amed discusses transparency, cooperation and disruption with Dries Van Noten, Anya Hindmarch and Stefano Martinetto, leaders of two early pandemic initiatives — The Forum and Rewiring Fashion — to share thinking on the role of independent fashion brands and retailers amidst the biggest crisis in the history of the modern fashion industry. The fashion industry has long been operating in a cyclically inefficient and anti-creative way. Issues like waste, early discounts, power imbalances and a suboptimal, wholesale-controlled calendar hurt brands at every level, as well as consumers. But when the Covid-19 pandemic prompted lockdowns around the world in early 2020, the industry was put on pause. In response, two initiatives, Forum and the BoF-facilitated Rewiring Fashion, emerged to make this period one of retrospection and discussion in hopes of bringing about systematic change. In the latest episode of Inside Fashion, which features a conversation from VOICES 2020, BoF’s Imran Amed sits down with Van Noten, as well as Anya Hindmarch and Stefano Martinetto, co-founder and chief executive of Tomorrow London to discuss the lessons the industry has learned during the pandemic and how that new perspective will shape its future. Candour has never been one of the industry’s priorities or strengths, which has hampered progress in the past. Hindmarch emphasises that there is a power to coming together. “You solve problems by not just thinking about yourself but collaborating as an industry,” she said. Thanks to the rise of e-commerce and the convenience economy, storytelling is more important than ever for luxury brands. “Just showing clothes and that’s it, forget it. That’s not going to work anymore… I think we have to offer different things,” said Van Noten. “We have to tell a story to show why the clothes are more expensive than high street labels, you have to give the whole package of support to people who come to the store.” Wholesale retail is changing — hopefully, to allow more space for creativity and development of strong products. Hindmarch thinks that wholesalers still have an important, localised role that helps designers connect with their buyers in a personal way. Martinetto believes shifts are for the better. He said: “The notion that wholesale is dying is most appropriately defined as ‘bad wholesale is dying.’” Related Articles: Dries Van Noten’s ‘Forum’ and ‘Rewiring Fashion’ Join Forces to Rebuild the Fashion System DTC vs Wholesale: Striking the Right Balance The BoF Podcast: Dries Van Noten on Making Retail Meaningful in the Pandemic To contact The Business of Fashion with comments, questions or speaker ideas please email podcast@businessoffashion.com. Anya launched her eponymous handbag label in 1987 at aged just 19, and has since used her knack for combining beautiful design with impeccable practicality and a strong dose of irreverent wit to create a globally recognised brand. From crumpled crisp packets to ketchup bottles nothing is off-limits to be given the luxury Anya twist. She was the first accessories designer to show on schedule at London Fashion Week taking collection presentations and turning them into artful immersive entertainment, from underground sweet shops to the world's largest bean bag. Emma Watson, Kerry Washington, Kate Moss and the Duchess of Cambridge have all carried her bags. And in 2017 her MBE was upgraded to a CBE in recognition of her contribution to the British fashion industry. In this special presentation, we’re excited to bring you a new series from Vogue -- In Vogue: The 1990s. If you miss the 90s for all its nostalgia, fashion, and culture, you're going to love this episode on John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Hussein Chalayan, and Stella McCartney. At the beginning of the 1990s, London’s fashion scene was sleepy and small. But not for long: Following the groundbreaking success of young British designer John Galliano at Givenchy in the 1980s, other young graduates of the London art school Central Saint Martins began to push the fashion world’s boundaries. Designer Anya Hindmarch is a veritable ideas machine. The daughter of an entrepreneur father and a French teacher mother – who was “brilliant at presents” (prizes wrapped with beautiful bows inspired the original Anya Hindmarch logo) – Hindmarch started her accessories business as a teenager, inspired by the leather duffel bags she saw all around her on an early trip to Florence. One of the very first designers to stock her collection on NET-A-PORTER when the website launched in 2000, she attests to the “mood-altering” magic of a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, while ever-ready to exploit fashion’s extraordinary platform as a power for good. Indeed, her ability to spin an idea into a product and a pop-cultural moment saw her bring about a game-changing shift in plastics consumption with her ‘I’m Not A Plastic Bag’ initiative, as she explains in this special 20th anniversary episode of Pieces of Me. Helle Thorning-Schmidt, co-chair of the Facebook oversight board, joins Christiane Amanpour to discuss the threat disinformation and conspiracy theories pose when gone unchecked. Nikole Hannah-Jones won a Pulitzer Prize for The 1619 Project in the New York Times; a project that attempts to re-examine the legacy of slavery in the United States. She explains how journalist and civil rights leader Ida N. Wells became her source of inspiration and why today COVID-19 disproportionately affects African Americans. Our Walter Isaacson speaks to Richard Haass, author of "The World: A Brief Introduction," about why we as a world need to abandon rivalry and embrace cooperation if we are to solve not only the current pandemic but future crises such as climate change and terrorism. He reflects of the challenges of modern globalization and the tensions between the U.S. and China. And finally – Anya Hindmarch handbag and accessories Designer has turned her talents to help the NHS. She describes her “holdster” design for frontline health workers so they can carry personal items whilst saving lives.

What kinds of products do we want to put out in the future? How can we rethink our design practices and material choices - and persuade the customer that it matters? Once we get to the other side of the COVID-19 crisis, circular and regenerative systems are going to be even more important. But how do we do it case by case? This week’s guest British accessories designer Anya Hindmarch has already started. In 2007, Anya launched her famous "I'm not A Plastic Bag" to raise awareness of how much single-use plastic goes to landfill. Now she's back with a new version, and this one's recycled.
In this episode, we are continuing on the theme of ‘place’ - the importance of our working environment, co-working spaces, how to express our brand in a physical space and learning from those that inspire us. Today we have arts, interiors and style writer, Aimee Farrell sharing her thoughts on inspiring workspaces and what we can learn from them. She has writes regularly for a delectable collection of publications including T magazine, the FT, Vanity Fair, British Vogue and How To Spend It. She is keenly observant and able to intertwine her knowledge of different creative disciplines effortlessly and to great effect. She has explored the creations of sculptures, interior designers, perfume house, artists, creative directors, architects and fashion designers. And, of particular interest today, has been invited into some extraordinary workspaces. I met Aimee at a wedding years ago and have been quietly in awe of her ever since. I was absolutely delighted, and terrified, when she agreed to come on the podcast so I could ask her all about Margaret Howell, Anya Hindmarch, Faye Toogood and Beata Heuman. I’ll admit to be rather nervous to chat to someone who has interviewed a seemingly endless list of superstar creatives and whose resultant work is as exquisite as it is eclectic. If you are wondering how your environment impacts you and what you can do to improve it, then you should enjoy this! And failing that, if you want to know who does a regular ‘pizza and purge’, who carefully curates pieces from the beach and who has made their office feel just like a home, then listen to this! And enjoy! To read some of Aimee's pieces, take a look below:https://www.instagram.com/aimee_farrell/https://www.nytimes.com/by/aimee-farrellhttps://www.vogue.com/contributor/aimee-farrell

A lively panel discussion marking the 40th anniversary of Margaret Thatcher's election as Prime Minister and the centenary of the Sex Disqualification Act. Lady Arden, the Rt Hon the Lord Willetts, Anya Hindmarch, Cindy Gallop and Sacha Romanovitch discuss whether women do indeed have to behave like a man to be successful. Moderated by the Principal of Somerville College, Baroness Royall of Blaisdon, the discussion marks the 40th anniversary of Margaret Thatcher’s election as Prime Minister on the 17th May. The anniversary of this landmark event coincides with the centenary of the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act that first allowed women to enter the professions. It also explores how far the political, professional and cultural environment has changed for women since then.

Following 7 years working in buying and merchandising roles at three of the biggest names in British luxury fashion; Mulberry, Matchesfashion.com, and Anya Hindmarch, Bethany Rowntree has taken the jump and gone solo, launching Studio B just 6 weeks ago (at the time we recorded our podcast). Statement not basic, this is certainly a phrase that can be used to describe Beth’s taste and way of doing things, yet she doesn’t shout, she shines. The brands Studio B showcases are unique, beautifully made and support local makers and economies such as made in London contemporary accessories label Paradise Row who we spoke to founder Nika Mokhtassi in episode 7. Beth’s approach to business and brand selection comes across as extremely relaxed, fun and instinctive. Yet behind the bold prints, colours and her wonderful smile is someone who has worked hard at understanding the business of fashion, working her way up from intern to business owner. Fellow Northerner Beth and I had a lot of fun discussing; her journey from Darlington and university in Manchester to her previous roles and how they have influenced her vision for Studio B, her bold taste, love of independent fashion brands and her go to Christmas outfit, all available from studio b of course! www.studiobfashion.comwww.blackneondigital.com

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the designer and businesswoman, Anya Hindmarch.Given her first handbag by her mother at 16, she knew that her future lay in fashion. At 18 she went to Florence to immerse herself in Italian style, and ended up deep in the world of Florentine leather, getting samples made up of a duffel bag she'd spotted. An initial run of 500 bags sold out. Fast forward 25 years and her eponymous fashion business is globally successful with her designs much sought after. She's also known for her conscience and designed a canvas tote called "I'm not a plastic bag" as part of an environmental campaign to highlight our over use of plastic bags. She combines all this with a hectic family life. She met and subsequently married a widower 12 years her senior when she was 25. He had 3 children aged under 5 and they've added a further two to the clan. She says her life is like "juggling and dancing while having one arm and one eye at the same time".Producer: Alison Hughes.
