This time, we speak to Rob Ellis, whose role as drummer and then co-producer with PJ Harvey led to rich and creative career, working with stars like Thom Yorke, Anna Calvi and Marianne Faithful. We hear great some great stories on what it was like recording these maverick artists, and Rob's refreshingly holistic approach to the recording process. Click here for a playlist of Rob's production work When DRY, the debut album by PJ Harvey, that he had co-produced and played drums on became a global hit, and a touchstone of early 90s guitar music, Rob Ellis was catapulted into 10 years of arranging and producing for a wide variety of artists including 60s legend Marianne Faithful. At the turn of the millennium Rob returned to work on production with Ms Harvey for what would become the Mercury Award winning album Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea. This kicked off another rich vein of work for upcoming and established artists such as Torres, Anna Calvi (who's debut album brought Rob another Mercury nomination) and 2:54. The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he's been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises. Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Chiswick in West London. Purpose is critical for a thriving life. As an example, Viktor Frankl lived through three concentration camps during WW II. He endured these concentration camps as the physician for the prisoners. One thing that he discovered was that if you weren't shot or starved outright by the Nazis, purpose was a big predictor of whether you would survive. If a prisoner lost their purpose, they would start getting sick and, soon, start dying. That was really profound to him. So much so that he wrote, "Woe to him who saw no more sense in his life, no aim, no purpose, and therefore no point in carrying on. He was soon lost". Dr. Victor Strecher carries on this tradition of pursuing purpose after losing his 19-year-old daughter to a heart condition. After months of grieving, and teetering on the edge of suicide, he asked himself, “How do I find meaning or purpose from this? Can I repurpose my life after this?" As he studied purpose, he soon realized this purpose is good for everybody. And after he rediscovered his purpose, he began teaching the what, why and how of purpose to others. What he has done in his life is truly a marvel. About Dr. John’s Guest: Vic Strecher is a renaissance man. He is a professor at the University of Michigan’s Schools of Public Health and Medicine. An innovative teacher and researcher, in 1995 he founded the UM Center for Health Communications Research, studying the future of digitally-tailored health communications when fewer than 15% of Americans had Internet access. He’s also an entrepreneur, founding HealthMedia, a digital health coaching company that was sold to Johnson & Johnson in 2010. More recently, Vic created Kumanu, a digital platform designed to help individuals and organizations live more purposefully. Vic and the organizations he founded have won numerous national and international awards, including two Smithsonian Awards, the Health Evolution Partners Innovations in Healthcare Award, and the National Business Coalition on Health’s Mercury Award. In 2010, Vic won the University of Michigan’s Distinguished Innovator Award. In late 2017, Dr. Strecher was the Donald A. Dunstan Foundation’s “Thinker in Residence” in Adelaide, Australia to develop a “Purpose Economy” of business, government, and communities. Hi 2009 TedMed presentation has been cited by MPHonline as one of the “Top 10 Ted Talks on Public Health.” Vic’s latest neuroscience, behavioral, and epidemiologic research; his two books, Life On Purpose and the graphic novel On Purpose; and his business Kumanu, are focused on the importance of developing and maintaining a strong purpose in life. London-based songwriter Nick Mulvey already had a wealth of musical knowledge before coming to the fore with a solo project in 2012, with years of formal education in Havana, Cuba studying music and art, as well as being an active member in Mercury Award nominees Portico Quartet. His first musical interactions were with piano and drums before he acquired a guitar in Southern Spain at the age of 18. He moved to Cuba a year later, and returned to the U.K. to study ethnomusicology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, submerging himself in different styles of music but specializing in West and Central African in particular. It was during this time that Mulvey met his Portico Quartet bandmates in 2005, where he played the Hang. After a successful stint with the outfit -- which included a Mercury Prize nomination in 2008, 150 shows worldwide, and signing to Peter Gabriel's Real World Records -- Mulvey decided it was time to leave in 2011 and return to his first inspiration, the guitar. With an abundance of genres at his fingertips, Mulvey set about creating a sound that was both striking and unique, intertwining influences of great musicians such as Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, and Tom Waits with a variety of African styles, including guitarist Kawele. This resulted in the sweet melodies and rhythmic strumming patterns that can be heard on his Fever to the Form EP, which was produced by Dan Carey (Steve Mason, Bat for Lashes) and released in 2013. In the meantime, he supported the likes of Willy Mason, Lianne La Havas, and Laura Marling on tour. Mulvey's full-length debut, First Mind, arrived in 2014 via Universal's Fiction and Harvest Records. It became a Top Ten album in the U.K. as well as a Mercury Prize nominee. His second LP was recorded live in the studio with his band and producer Ethan Johns before being passed along to Carey for the finishing electronic touches. Titled Wake Up Now, it was released in mid-2017 and addressed topics including the refugee crisis. Dancing for the Answers, a four-track EP, followed in 2018. Mulvey kicked off 2019 with the single "Moment of Surrender."-Allmusic / Scott Kerr nickmulvey.comeastforest.org

Chris is the creative director for Motel 6 and HEB. He’s won the Mercury Award for radio 7 times. He’s a two-time jeopardy champion, an improv comic, a serial event […]
Sometimes we talk about popular records on this podcast. By popular we mean “has sold a boatload of copies” and La Roux certainly falls into the category of having sold a boatload of copies. Indeed, the Mercury Award nominated, Grammy Award winning, platinum selling artist could also be comfortably described as popular in just about any capacity you care to think of. Chris, whilst not disagreeing with this (and to be fair we’ve touched on other albums which have sold as many if not more than that this record did), believes this record is overlooked because of its perception as a pop record. He puts in an impassioned shift here, explaining how this album is actually way more than the sum of its parts. Weaver fundamentally disagrees, and what follows is a truly interesting conversation on what popular music is, what our discography should or shouldn’t entail, and where we draw that line. We do also talk about some of the bangers on this album because there’s at least a few on it. Is this Unsung? You can let us know by voting on our Facebook page.

“Storytelling is a big part of what I do, but it's all driven by curiosity.”Tom ScottThere is nothing more powerful than a story well told.Built into the very fabric of what makes us human, this ancient art holds the power to transform not just the individual but humanity at large.Nobody understands this better than Tom Scott – a man devoted to the idea that when curiosity, conversation and community converge, the world indeed becomes a better place.A graduate of Brown University with a Masters of Divinity from Yale, Tom is perhaps best known as the co-founder and original CEO of Nantucket Nectars. Founded in 1989 — long before it was cool to be a start-up founder — the fruit juice venture quickly grew to national prominence, making the “Inc. 500” list of fastest growing U.S. companies five years in a row and garnering Tom accolades, including the Mercury Award for Advertising and Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year award. After selling Nantucket Nectars in 2002, Tom reinvented himself as a film and television producer. In 2004 he formed Plum TV, which owned and operated a network of stations around the country and received more than 14 Emmy awards. He produced television ads for companies like Nike and BMW. He created and produced the HBO series The Neistat Brothers with 3-time podcast guest Casey Neistat. And in 2010 he won an Independent Spirit Award for producing the feature-length film Daddy Longlegs (also with Casey).Tom’s current passion is The Nantucket Project. Akin to TED but much more intimate, TNP is both an annual event and a movement — gatherings large and small (plus a new podcast, The Neighborhood Project) that bring together thought leaders across a wide range of disciplines to explore the most relevant, cutting-edge ideas and the implications such ideas pose for the betterment of culture, society and business.I have known Tom since 7th grade. We attended junior high and high school together. These were not my favorite times, so it was incredibly healing to revisit that era with someone who was there. We discuss Tom's entrepreneurial success. What he aims to achieve with The Nantucket Project. And the power of story to inspire wonder, cultivate community, ignite change, and unite us in this most divided time.I've been waiting 30 years to have this conversation. Honest, intimate and personally meaningful, it's exactly the exchange I always hoped it would be.You're in for a treat. 2009 Mercury Award winner, Speech Debelle, sits down with me to talk all things life. This episode focuses less on the Artistic process, but instead looks closer at the Artist behind it. This a very human conversation in which we back and forth about race, love, happiness & it gets pretty open and vulnerable about "daddy issues". What would happen if you put 8 songwriters into a house for five days? Well, there was only one way to find out... In November 2005, Burnsong invited 8 writers from the worlds of jazz, pop, rock, folk and traditional music to write together in a Georgian Mansion deep in the heart of the Dumfries and Galloway Countryside. Boo Hewerdine, David Scott, Niki King, Emily Smith, Geoff Martyn, Marc Pilley, Riley Briggs and Sophie Bancroft picked up the gauntlet but with some trepidation – Who were these other people? Will I be able to write with a total stranger? Will there be prima donnas, divas and tantrums? If I get writers block will they cast me out? Where on earth is this place anyway? It took less then a few hours for these fears to dispel and to be replaced by a magical mix of music, writing, creativity and laughter. Just 5 days later the Burnsong 8 took the stage for the first time to perform the astonishing 24 songs they had written in those few days. And what songs they were – moving, haunting, beautiful, soulful, sad, laugh out loud funny and even, at times, a little disco. Their performances during Burnsong –Live! proved what amazing things can be done when you give people the space and the freedom to experiment and create. It seemed that our experiment had worked, these 8 writers had come together and in such a short time created something truly special and unique, a true reflection of the real talent, imagination and passion for great music that exists in our country today. But it was not to end there, and with the support of Tune-Up the Burnsong Song House writers are going out on the road, bringing their songs and their stories to audiences around Scotland.
