Welcome to the Beehive! It's the 100th and final episode ever of the Rock Under Fire podcast. It's all about hot takes as Mike Derrico is joined by Marisa Baldassaro, Heather Drain and Michael Lee Nirenberg in over two hours of too many topics to list. But we'll try...let's see...there's random takes on Chuck Berry, the early days of the Internet, Joy Division, Brian Eno, the Gun Club, Def Leppard, Michael Monroe, Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy, the Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty, Billy Joel, Phil Collins, Marisa's Vince Neil imitation, about a dozen different takes on Kiss, including the question..."is Kiss misogynistic," and a whole lot more. It must have been in the stars, but we saved the most insane episode by far...for last. Thanks to all our supporters over the years. We had a small audience but we had a blast. Thanks for listening. Peace. luv, rock and roll... Rock Under Fire host, Mike Derrico is a freelance writer, pop cultural historian, and author of the books, AUTUMN AND EVERYTHING AFTER: The Murder of John Lennon, Evolution of Bruce Springsteen & the Birth of the Reagan Era (2020), THE LOCKER NOTES, a novel (2021), and the forthcoming ...AND THE CATHEDRAL FELL TO THE GROUND: The Lonesome Death of Rock and Roll (November 2023). Michael Lee Nirenberg, in his fourth time on the podcast, is a writer and director whose most celebrated recent works have been his 2014 documentary Back Issues: The Hustler Magazine Story, and his 2020 book Earth A.D. the Poisoning of the American Landscape and the Communities That Fought Back. Heather Drain, in her second Rock Under Fire guest spot, is a writer who veers between the worlds of esoterica film, wild music, heart-born words, and prose that is dark, rich, quirky, and often undefinable. In the nonfiction realm, her work has appeared on the print and digital pages of Dangerous Minds, Diabolique, Video Watchdog, Art Decades, just to name a few. Her prose has appeared in both the Women in Horror Annual, as well as the 2020 anthology, The Blind Dead Ride Out of Hell: A Literary Tribute to the Amando de Ossorio. Marisa Baldassaro is a writer and fellow hater currently putting the finishing touches on her latest project, a Dory Previn zine, discussed earlier this season on Rock Under Fire (Ep. 79). Marisa has also co-hosted several episodes of Rock Under Fire during Season 3. Michael Lee Nirenberg, author of the book "Earth A.D. The Poisoning of The American Landscape and the Communities that Fought Back," stops by to talk about his book. From the description: "A sweeping oral history of two American Superfund sites. Comprised of hundreds of interviews with political, environmental, corporate leaders as well as the citizens affected by living in these toxic zones, Nirenberg tells the stories behind the Tar Creek lead mine wasteland in rural Oklahoma compared and contrasted with the history of chemical poisoning of Newtown Creek in the now real-estate hotspot, Brooklyn, NY. The sagas of Tar Creek and Newtown show how wealth, racism, and the rural-urban divide influences how environmental disasters are viewed. The diverse voices are woven into a quick-paced modern-day thriller drawn from firsthand interviews with the people who both witnessed and participated in what became some of the most expensive man-made environmental disasters. Everyone from governors to scientists to fishermen to teachers to kids tells their stories of Earth after disaster in this riveting true story. Earth A.D. is a documentation of the past and a warning to the future." A good time is had by all! To start learning magick now, check out our free guided meditation at: https://start.magick.me
If you appreciate Parallax Views and the work of J.G. Michael please consider supporting the show through Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/parallaxviews On this edition of Parallax Views, filmmaker and writer Michael Lee Nirenberg joins us to discuss a tale of two American environmental disasters and the communities that fought for justice against those they deemed responsible for the incidents. Earth A.D.: The Poisoning of the American Landscape and the Communities That Fought Back is a tour-de-force oral history that chronicles the environmental devastation resulting from American Superfund sites at Tar Creek in Oklahoma and Newton Creek in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY. Nirenberg paints a picture that involves citizens, activists, politicians, and corporate leaders through hundreds of interviews that reveal not only the ways that wealth and racism intersect with how environmental disaster are dealt with in different communities but also how the urban-rural divide plays a role in this regard as well. Recalling the style of music journalist Legs McNeil, Nirenberg's oral history brims with a punk rock verve that extends far beyond its title referencing The Misfits. In this conversation we discuss a number of topics including the horrors of lead poisoning, environmentalism as an issue that should transcend the left/right divide, environmental racism, Michael's film work and his documentary on Hustler's Larry Flynt (as well as his interview with the controversial pornographer Al Goldstein of Screw Magazine infamy!), the Native American communities like the Quapaw tribe who are negatively impacted by environmental disasters and grassroots activists like Tar Creekkeeper Rebecca Jim and Don Ackerman, class and race as they relate to who is harmed most by environmental catastrophes, local corruption and how it effects the response to environmental disasters, nuclear power and energy needs, the difference between the Newton Creek and Tar Creek disasters, ecohorror, the influence of punk and metal on Michael's work, and much, much more.

Mike and Pat talk about AUTUMN AND EVERYTHING AFTER: The Murder of John Lennon, Evolution of Bruce Springsteen & the Birth of the Reagan Era...a book examining the fateful events of the consequential last months of 1980, how they changed music and politics, and inadvertently set the tone for today's toxic climate in America...a story about rock & roll, murder and the ongoing culture war. Molland is the lead guitarist and vocalist in the classic lineup of Badfinger that rose to the top of the pop charts in the late 1960s and early 70s with hits like “Come and Get It,” “Baby Blue,” “No Matter What,” and “Day After Day.” Molland has stayed musically active over the decades and discusses various records and periods in his career as well as various projects he has been involved with, including recording with George Harrison, John Lennon, Leon Russell, and Badfinger’s role in the Concert for Bangladesh. PJ FARLEY of Trixter talks to Mike Derrico about his brand new solo album ACCENT THE CHANGE. Aside from Trixter, PJ FARLEY is also a member of the band Ra, has played with Lita Ford, toured with Stained, Seether and Sevendust, and is currently active with Eric Martin of Mr. Big, Fozzy and Kuarantine, the new remote Kiss cover project with Chris Jericho, Luke Bryan drummer Kent Slucher, Joe McGinnes of Klassik ’78 and Bruce Kulick. Going into the recording of this episode, the sad news of Eddie Van Halen’s passing had just broken, which is discussed at the outset. In the early days of independent record stores, if you grew up in New Jersey's Middlesex, Union or Essex counties during the 1970s, 80s or 90s, chances are you shopped at Little Joe Records, Dot Records or J&J Records where you could find all of those good things you couldn't get at your local boring and predictable Sam Goody. Childhood friend Joe Gerulski joins the show for Episode 61 to share some great music-related stories and talk about growing up in the family-run business selling records in an age when records were still the biggest-selling musical format and rock music was still at peak popularity. We also get into the inevitable discussion that never really goes away for too long on our show...80s metal. A fun blast through the past that moves along much too quickly. In Episode 57, Mike Derrico talks to Robert Duncan, former managing editor of Creem Magazine and lifelong rock and roll obsessive. Duncan, a musician himself, has been in and around the rock and roll world through some pivotal years, perhaps through rock’s most hedonistic period of all, the 1970s. Aside from Creem, he has contributed to notable publications such as Rolling Stone, Circus, Life and is the author of books such as The Noise: Notes from a Rock and Roll Era, Only the Good Die Young: The Rock and Roll Book of the Dead, the very first book ever written on Kiss, and has now, after decades written his first novel, Loudmouth. https://www.amazon.com/Loudmouth-Nove... https://www.duncanwrites.com/ As a rock and roll podcast, Rock Under Fire makes it a point not to focus on any one particular artist, band, or genre of music, but with that comes the reality that the show may not always appeal to everyone at the same time. In Episode 56, it’s Pat’s birthday! Discussions include Pat’s birthday, Ticketmaster, Bon Jovi’s tour cancellation, the Prince Tribute, Clive Davis, new Stones song, and reviews of new albums from Pearl Jam, Fiona Apple, and the Strokes, and a rant on the NFL draft. Mike Derrico and Pat Ivanitski are your hosts. As a rock and roll podcast, Rock Under Fire makes it a point not to focus on any one particular artist, band, or genre of music, but with that comes the reality that the show may not always appeal to everyone at the same time. The seven decades of rock and roll music along with its even longer history leaves an extremely broad canvas to create discussions on, drawing from different areas with each episode. So there is still always something for everyone. In past episodes we've discussed The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Prince, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Kiss, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, The Who, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, the Monterey Pop Festival, Woodstock, Doo Wop, The Beach Boys, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Steely Dan, The Strokes, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, The Doors, Patti Smith, The Ramones, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, Guns n Roses, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Velvet Underground, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Cars, Cheap Trick, Heart, Dave Grohl, Jack White, digital streaming, the state of the music industry and record labels, the effect of rap and hip hop on rock, Neil Young, Talking Heads, Counting Crows, Boston, The Temptations, Bon Jovi, AC/DC, the Smithereens, Suzanne Vega, Van Halen, Rick Rubin, The Gun Club, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, The Mekons, UFO, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Chuck Klosterman, John Philip Sousa, Billy Joel, The Wipers, Iron Maiden, Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Waits, Thin Lizzy, the Bee Gees, Mozart, Beethoven, Puccini, Bob Marley, 5 Seconds of Summer, Twenty One Pilots, Ed Sheeran, J Geils Band, Billy Miller, Chris Cornell, Turn Me On Dead Man, the Desert Trip concerts, aging rock stars, our favorite debut albums, soundtracks, music licensing, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, disco vs. rock, Ticketmaster, Tom Petty, and most overrated and underrated artists. In Episode 55, Rock Under Fire continues The Lockdown Series, a special run of shows for listeners who can use some distraction away from the 24-hour news cycle of the pandemic situation. The obvious is not ignored, but as always, discussion is kept to music and the performing arts. This week, Pat and Mike address the passing of Bill Withers and then go back to their favorite “this or that’ game…Gun to the Head, pairing classic rock albums against each other. Discussions also include Billy Joel, Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Iron Maiden Eddie toys, Tiger King, and the monkey. As a rock and roll podcast, Rock Under Fire makes it a point not to focus on any one particular artist, band, or genre of music, but with that comes the reality that the show may not always appeal to everyone at the same time. We're all over the place on this particularly loose and funny conversation. Mike Derrico, Pat Ivanitski, and Marisa Baldasarro are your hosts. In Episode 51, we return for our first show of 2019 and the beginning of Season 4. At the outset, we introduce Marisa, a longtime friend and new voice to the Rock Under Fire podcast. In ROCK UNDER FIRE Episode 49, we present Mike Derrico's full conversation with original MTV VJ NINA BLACKWOOD. Portions of the interview were featured in "The Rise & Fall of MTV," an episode of RUF's sister podcast, RETROSPEAK, where Mike and Pat Ivanitski discuss the early years of MTV, the channel's influence on pop culture and the music industry, as well as its fall from relevance. NINA BLACKWOOD is one of the five original VJs on MTV from the channel's launch in 1981 through 1986. She went on to host Solid Gold, the Rock Report segment of Entertainment Tonight, and nationally syndicated radio shows, Nina BlackWood's Absolutely 80s and Nina Blackwood's New Wave Nation. Blackwood can be heard today on the 80s on 8, available on SiriusXM. Joe Long, born Joseph LaBracio in Elizabeth, New Jersey, spent ten years as a member of The Four Seasons, playing a vital role in the group's most prolific decade from 1965-1975. Long played bass, sang, contributed to onstage musical arrangements, served as co-producer, onstage emcee, and was a longtime fan favorite. In 2014, he was honored with a street-naming in his hometown of Elizabeth, and is now joining the canon of New Jersey history and immortality with an induction to the New Jersey Hall of Fame. We are honored to have him on our podcast. In Episode 45, Mike Derrico talks to the Four Seasons legend about his early musical roots, his ten year run with the group, and his recent induction into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. In Episode 44, we discuss the most talked-about new band in two decades...possibly since The Strokes. Is Greta Van Fleet really the next Led Zeppelin as critics suggest? We are joined by longtime friend Michael Czirjak in an episode that looks back on New Jersey's music scene in the 1990s when we were all rock stars. We're still rock stars, but just doing different things now. Michael is a New Jersey native, lifelong guitarist, and music nerd. In the 90s, he and his band Segway recorded heavily and gigged tirelessly up and down the East Coast to anyone who would listen. These days, he spends the majority of his time teaching his six-year old twin boys (Sam and George) the importance of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and the need for very loud guitars. He is also a Partner and Co-founder of the Hi-Tech Recruiting Firm C2R Ventures, HQ'd in New York City. https://c2rventures.com/ In this episode we discuss the rock clubs of the 90s NJ music scene such as the Melody, Club Bene, Birch Hill, Studio One, etc...plus, the rebirth of vinyl, farewell tours, Slayer, Van Halen, Bruno Mars,Iron Maiden, Chuck Berry, John Mellencamp, Elder, Ghost, Art Stock, and a whole lotta random stuff. In Episode 31, we dig through Stick Nixon's Vintage Vinyl shopping bag and explore his recent purchases. Discussions include Walter Becker, Steely Dan, Parliament, Primal Scream, Hawkwind, and Berlin. Stick also reviews the Deep Purple/Alice Cooper show at PNC Bank Arts Center on August 28, as well as recounts his trip to Bruce Springsteen's childhood home. In the absence of Pat and Tracy, and an ailing Mike on the sidelines, Stick is in the pilot seat on this one. We thank all of you who continue to support Rock Under Fire, and we welcome any new listeners to the show. As a rock and roll podcast, we make it a point not to focus on any one particular artist, band, or genre of music, but with that comes the reality that our show may not always appeal to everyone at the same time. The seven decades of rock and roll music along with its even longer history gives us an extremely broad canvas to create discussions on, drawing from different areas with each episode. So there is still always something for everyone. In the previous 30 episodes we've discussed The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Prince, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Kiss, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, The Who, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, the Monterey Pop Festival, Woodstock, Doo Wop, The Beach Boys, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Steely Dan, The Strokes, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, The Doors, Patti Smith, The Ramones, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, Guns n Roses, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Velvet Underground, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Cars, Cheap Trick, Heart, Dave Grohl, Jack White, digital streaming, the state of the music industry and record labels, the effect of rap and hip hop on rock, Neil Young, Talking Heads, Counting Crows, Boston, The Temptations, Bon Jovi, AC/DC, the Smithereens, Suzanne Vega, Van Halen, Rick Rubin, The Gun Club, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, The Mekons, UFO, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Chuck Klosterman, John Philip Sousa, Billy Joel, The Wipers, Iron Maiden, Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Waits, Thin Lizzy, the Bee Gees, Mozart, Beethoven, Puccini, Bob Marley, 5 Seconds of Summer, Twenty One Pilots, Ed Sheeran, J Geils Band, Billy Miller, Chris Cornell, the Desert Trip concerts, aging rock stars, our favorite debut albums, soundtracks, music licensing, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, disco vs. rock, and our most overrated and underrated artists. We've also been joined by special guests such as, author and photographers Bob Gruen and Lydia Criss, author and pop culture critic Alice Echols, and writer and director Michael Lee Nirenberg. In a very contentious episode, an overly talkative and aggravated Mike takes on Pat and Stick in a battle of opinions on Creatures of the Night-era Kiss in the middle of an otherwise celebratory conversation commemorating the rock legends. It’s Rock Under Fire’s Kiss episode..a show that challenges the consensus and commonly-accepted beliefs regarding certain eras of the band. We talk all eras, share our personal stories, likes, dislikes, as well as address the ongoing division and war among Kiss fans that persists to this day. Enjoy this fresh and brutally honest perspective from OUTSIDE the world of Kiss. We thank all of you who continue to support Rock Under Fire, and we welcome any new listeners to the show. As a rock and roll podcast, we make it a point not to focus on any one particular artist, band, or genre of music, but with that comes the reality that our show may not always appeal to everyone at the same time. Episode 29 brings more insanity as Mike, Pat, and Stick are joined by two more childhood friends (Eric and Jim) to recount growing up in a world where every kid listened to rock music, played an electric guitar, and started a band. In Episode 27, we begin our two-part special THE DISCO YEARS where we explore the impact that disco music had on rock, pop, and American culture during the 1970s and beyond. In Part One, Mike Derrico is joined by Alice Echols, author of HOT STUFF: DISCO AND THE REMAKING OF AMERICAN CULTURE. Echols is professor of history and the Barbara Streisand Chair of Contemporary Gender Studies at USC, as well as the author of four other books, including DARING TO BE BAD: RADICAL FEMINISM IN AMERICA 1967-1975, SHAKY GROUND: THE SIXTIES AND IT'S AFTERSHOCKS, SCARS OF SWEET PARADISE: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF JANIS JOPLIN, and her upcoming new book SHORTFALL: FAMILY SECRETS, FINANCIAL COLLAPSE, AND A HIDDEN HISTORY OF AMERICAN BANKING, due out in October 2017. In one of the best discussions on disco that you will ever hear on a rock podcast, Echols and Derrico talk Barry White, James Brown, George Clinton, Donna Summer, the Village People, Casablanca Records, Philly soul, Giorgio Moroder, Stevie Wonder, the Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck, Kiss, Rod Stewart, Saturday Night Fever, Greg Tate, and many other names as well as the underlying social, racial, gender, and sexual implications during the era. In our most bizarre episode yet, we’re joined by two childhood friends to discuss the music of 1977, but end up recounting some personally traumatizing events. Shocking, hilarious, and directionless, Episode 26 follows its own unique road through the 1970s as seen through the eyes of four kids from the suburbs of Central Jersey. Legendary rock and roll photographer and author, Bob Gruen joins us for our one-year anniversary episode. We discuss Bob's career producing iconic images that have very often provided the narrative for rock and roll for the past 50 years. Bob is synonymous with John Lennon, Yoko Ono, The Rolling Stones, Ike and Tina Turner, Kiss, The New York Dolls, Led Zeppelin, Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash, and a mind-numbing host of other rock and roll legends. It is also difficult to think of Bob Gruen without thinking of his home, stomping ground, and workplace, New York City. He is, without a doubt, New York's premier photographer, and one of the most important that rock and roll music has ever seen. In this little tribute episode to the power of the image in rock music, we're honored to be joined by Bob. Mike also gives his review of the Fyre Festival. Mike Derrico and Pat Ivanitski are your hosts in the absence of co-host Stick Nixon. Go to Bob Gruen's website at http://www.bobgruen.com/. So there is still always something for everyone. In the previous 20 episodes we've discussed The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Prince, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Kiss, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, The Who, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, the Monterey Pop Festival, Woodstock, Doo Wop, The Beach Boys, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Steely Dan, The Strokes, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, The Doors, Patti Smith, The Ramones, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, Guns n Roses, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Velvet Underground, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Cars, Cheap Trick, Heart, Dave Grohl, Jack White, digital streaming, the state of the music industry and record labels, the effect of rap and hip hop on rock, Neil Young, Talking Heads, Counting Crows, Boston, The Temptations, Bon Jovi, AC/DC, the Smithereens, Suzanne Vega, Van Halen, Rick Rubin, The Gun Club, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, The Mekons, UFO, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Chuck Klosterman, John Philip Sousa, Billy Joel, The Wipers, Iron Maiden, Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Waits, Thin Lizzy, the Bee Gees, Mozart, Beethoven, Puccini, Bob Marley, 5 Seconds of Summer, Twenty One Pilots, Ed Sheeran, the Desert Trip concerts, aging rock stars, our favorite debut albums, soundtracks, music licensing, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and our most overrated and underrated artists. In Episode 20, we discuss the R&RHOF 2017 induction ceremony along the artists. Then comes the obvious and expected...we vent our issues with the Hall. As our search for all that has gone wrong with rock music continues, Episode 19 puts rock's most powerful symbol, the guitar itself, under fire. How did the guitar go from the coolest object on Earth to an instrument for wimps? We also discuss the death of rock's founding father Chuck Berry, the possible retirement of Eric Clapton, and a host of guitar-related names such as Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Tony Macalpine, Al Di Meola, and Vinnie Moore. Pat also reviews Panic! At the Disco's recent Madison Square Garden gig. We thank all of our supporters who stepped up to get behind this brand new podcast this past year. In Episode 18, we address Ed Sheeran's recent "record-breaking" chart dominance, the likes of which has not been since The Beatles. We challenge its validity by comparing the model of the pop charts in 1964 with the current model of 2017. We also discuss 1980s Kiss, and Stick reviews the Flaming Lips show at Terminal 5. Mike Derrico and Stick Nixon at the mics in the absence of co-host Pat Ivanitski. We thank all of our supporters who stepped up to get behind this brand new podcast this past year. By listener request, Supergroups is our topic for Episode 17. We talk about the biggest supergroups of the rock era such as Cream, Blind Faith, The Firm, Traveling Wilburys, Highwaymen, Temple of the Dog, Oysterhead, Asia, etc... Audience comments and contributions are read and discussed as well, along with some isolated conversations about Eric Clapton, Robbin Crosby, and the never-ending criticism of our mission statement that rock as we once knew it, is dead. Episode 17 also contains well-served rants from Pat and Mike regarding the Metallica/Lady Gaga Grammy Award debacle. In Episode 15 we talk copyrights, publishing, and how music licensing has become the most lucrative source of revenue for many bands and artists that once got by on album sales and touring. Is it the only way out for some? Or is it simply selling out? What constitutes “selling out?” What kinds of compromises are entailed? We examine these questions in a 90-minute discussion that also explores the likes of ASCAP, BMI, Apple, U2, Metallica, Aerosmith, Huey Lewis, Ray Parker Jr., Starship, George Harrison, The Chiffons, Ed Sheeran, George Michael, and the two similar but unique cases of Led Zeppelin vs. Spirit and Jake Holmes. While co-host Stick is away, Pat and Mike are joined by Tracy, the consulting, advising, and analytic guru who works behind the scenes of Rock Under Fire’s social media. For Episode 14, we raid the vault and give you a show never meant for release. Since our much-anticipated Christmas Spectacular got hit left and right with copyright claims and we are on holiday break, we're throwing this one out there in the meantime...a conversation that got left behind back in June as we were working on our "1966" episode. We were discussing the state of the podcast, then five episodes in, and decided to turn the mics on. In a very random half hour of subjects, we talk about Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, Dolly Parton, Brad Gillis, Loverboy, The Allman Brothers, Tame Impala, Pearl Jam, and Jon Bon Jovi in a very aimless but fun episode. We return in January 2017! We thank all of our supporters who stepped up to get behind this brand new podcast this past year. We make it a point not to focus on any one particular artist, band, or genre of music, but with that comes the reality that our show may not always appeal to everyone at the same time. In Episode 10, we are joined by artist, writer, and director, Michael Lee Nirenberg. With a massive archive of stunning visual art as well as a number of brilliant short films over the past decade and a half, he is perhaps best known for his much-acclaimed 2014 documentary, BACK ISSUES: THE HUSTLER MAGAZINE STORY. https://www.amazon.com/Back-Issues-Hu... Never one to champion the mainstream, Nirenberg's current Huffington Post column serves as a constant dialogue of ideas with those who have pushed societal, musical, technological, literary, and artistic boundaries, often from the farthest edges of society, yet remain culturally relevant and significant. In this 80-minute discussion, Nirenberg sits down with us to talk about the current state of rock and roll, punk, post-punk, Brett Smiley, Kate Bush, Bob Dylan, Kurt Vonnegut, Rap, Hip Hop, Eminem's "Campaign Speech," the irrelevance of music criticism, the 1986 documentary Heavy Metal Parking Lot, Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum, and a whole lot more. We also discuss favorite bands, guitarists, vocalists, as well as pit David Bowie's LOW and HEROES and Steely Dan's AJA and THE ROYAL SCAM against each other in a new Rock Under Fire segment called Gun To The Head. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/mi... This week on Arts & Seizures, host Mike Edison is joined by Cristina Ward from the Feral House publishing company, and Michael Lee Nirenberg, director of the Hustler magazine documentary Back Issues.
Need a new documentary to watch while spring gets its act together? This week on Arts & Seizures host Mike Edison and guest-host Pete Zaremba welcome back to the show director Michael Lee Nirenberg. Michael’s documentary, “Back Issues: The Hustler Magazine Story,” is now streaming on Netflix and adds to a lively discussion on New York City strip clubs and the state of pornography these days. After the break (featuring a sneak preview of a new Fleshtones cover tune!), a few friends join in the studio to debate the Beatles VS the Rolling Stones. This program was brought to you by Underground Meats.
This week on Arts & Seizures, hosts Mike and Judy welcome Michael Lee Nirenberg, Director of the Documentary Back Issues: The Hustler Magazine Story to the program. Talking about his close relationship with the magazine, his father was one of the original art directors in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Michael goes on to explain the background of the magazine with Larry Flint as well as its importance in the country’s culture. More than just a pornographic publication, the magazine ended up being a beacon for the First Amendment. In the last few minutes of the show, Michael also shares plans for his new project regarding the subcultural history of computer hacking. Tune in for a charged show! This program was sponsored by Heritage Foods USA. “I realized that it (Hustler Magazine) was much more of a social force than I thought it was, and the way people look at it is that it’s just pictures of naked women, but the social commentary was really severe and over the top.” [8:29] — Michael Lee Nirenberg on Arts & Seizures
