Kris Myers was born on April 5, 1977. Receiving a drum kit at the age of 8, he took an early interest in jazz, rock and punk music. During high school Myers co-started his first musical outfit, a ska/punk band called the Skalawags. The group received a decent amount of success but denied an offer to tour Japan to instead pursue college degrees. Myers attended Elmhurst College from 1995 – 1999 where he was a music major and the drummer in the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Under director Doug Beach, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band played gigs in the U.S. and Internationally at events such as the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jakarta Jazz Festival and the Montreaux Jazz Festival. In 2001 Myers enrolled in DePaul University where he earned his master's degree in jazz drumming and was a member of the Rob Parton Orchestra.  In addition to his involvement in school bands, Myers was playing in festivals with a variety of jazz artists such as Nicholas Payton, Diane Schuur, Randy Brecker, Dennis DiBlasio as well as local musicians Mark Colby and John McLean.  Myers also was a member of Chicago jazz fusion band Kick the Cat.  Myers began playing drums for progressive-rock band Umphrey's McGee in 2003 following the departure of original drummer Mike Mirro. With Myers at the helm, Umphrey's has released ten albums and maintains a rigorous touring schedule of over 100 live shows per year.  Umphrey's has performed at legendary festivals and venues such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Fuji Rock Festival, South by Southwest, Red Rocks, The Ryman Theatre, The Beacon Theatre and more. In 2011 Myers was honored with the title of Best Jam Band Drummer by DRUM Magazine, beating jamband stalwarts such as Butch Trucks (The Allman Brothers) and Jon Fishman (Phish). In 2018, Myers was featured on the cover of Modern Drummer's July issue. Myers placed second in the Experimental Rock category of the publication's “Readers Poll Awards” behind St. Vincent drummer Matt Johnson. When he's not behind the drum kit, Myers enjoys playing golf, attending concerts, hiking and collecting art.    Some Things That Came Up:  -2:30 Kris's multi genre style  -3:00 Rabid fans  -4:45 The Umphrey's McGee audition turned into a 21 year gig and counting -6:30 Kris's previous band was Kick The Cat  -11:00 Maintaining a list of all the venues the band has played  -11:30 Red Rocks is fave venue as well as The Fox Theater in Oakland and The Ryman in Nashville -14:00 Vic Salazar !!! On this episode, we look at the 1983 debut of legendary Texas blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan: Texas Flood. While  Stevie Ray Vaughan seemed to come out of nowhere when he walked on stage with his band, Double Trouble, at the Montreaux Jazz Festival in  Switzerland, and, indeed, he was the first to perform without a record label backing him. While the performance was met with boos from the audience, it did catch the attention of two figures in the audience:  Jackson Browne and David Bowie. Bowie was so impressed he asked Vaughan to lay down tracks on his upcoming album, Let's Dance. Jackson Browne was so impressed that he lent them his private studio to record some tracks. The recordings at Browne's studio caught the attention of legendary Columbia record executive John Hammond, who liked what he heard enough to release it as an album. That album, Texas Flood, launched Vaughan's solo career. Vaughan's blend of traditional blues and rock and roll swagger was already known around his home state of Texas, particularly in Austin, where he had been a staple of the club scene for nearly a decade. However, his work on Let's Dance, as well as his videos being in constant rotation on a fledgling MTV, catapulted him to international stardom. Texas blues would never be the same again.

Today, we have the pleasure of speaking to a legend in our industry! Rémy Crégut is the head of the 2m2c Montreux Music and Convention Center in Montreux, where the Montreux Jazz Festival is held. He also started the MPI chapter in France and is an active ECM member. Rémy has had some wonderful life experiences! He had a fantastic career in the hotel industry and did various jobs within the Meetings and Events industry.  Rémy is an excellent example of what servant leadership means. In this episode, he shares his fascinating story, talks about leadership, and discusses his experiences before becoming the General Manager of the 2m2c Montreux Music and Convention Center. They include participating in the Paris Dakar off-road race, joining the army, running a team of truckers in America, and rising through the ranks in a hotel. He also shares some of the lessons he learned along the way and some key points for having a successful career.  We hope you enjoy our exciting and inspiring conversation with Rémy Crégut today! Rémy Crégut's bio Rémy Crégut is the Founder and has been the Honorary President of the MPI French Chapter since 1997, a member of the MPI Foundation European Council, and was an active ECM Member from 2006 to 2016. Rémy is a man with a diverse and rich professional background! Between 1984 -1996, he occupied senior sales and marketing positions at Sofitel, Hyatt Hotels, and Intercontinental Hotels & Resorts. He subsequently created Disneyland Paris Business Solutions, acting as a director for 3 years, and then moved to the Côte d'Azur to open the Grimaldi Forum Monaco.  Two years later, he became Executive Vice-President of LSO International, the largest destination management company in France at that time. Before accepting his current position in Montreux, he was heading Center Parcs Business Solutions in Rotterdam.  In 2005 Rémy accepted the role of General Manager of the 2m2c Montreux Music and Convention Center, host of the famous long-lasting Montreux Jazz Festival. Remy had been serving on different boards (Club Français du Tourisme d'Affaires, ANAé, and European Cities Marketing).  He now sits in various committees, such as the Coesio (French Speaking Congress Destinations), Swiss Convention Centers Alliance, the Swiss Riviera Economic Development Office, the Swiss Riviera Hotels Association, the Montreux Riviera Convention Bureau, and the Partners Club of the French Association of Event Agencies. Joining the family business  Rémy always dreamed of working in the family business. His father wanted him to get a diploma before joining the company, which constructed roads, airports, and parking lots. So Remy enrolled at the Ecole Spéciale des Travaux Publics in Paris, got a diploma, and became part of the business. Business school  After his father sold the business, Rémy enrolled in a business school in the south of France. After a year, he quit his studies because he wanted to find his own way in life.  A hotel in the south of France Around the same time, one of his aunts opened a hotel in the south of France, so Rémy started working there. He had to do almost everything from driving to cooking to being a porter because his aunt had no experience as a hotelier. Paris Dakar  Rémy always wanted to participate in the Paris Dakar off-road race. He finally got the opportunity to do it on a motorbike in January 1992, and it was a memorable experience! He gained a lot of confidence from doing it, and it afforded him the chance to learn more about the world.  The army Rémy then spent a compulsory year in the army. That was another valuable experience for him. It allowed him to get in touch with real life in France and meet people from all over the country. A new adventure While working at his aunt's hotel, an American man who had made a fortune in specialized industrial cleaning asked Rémy to work for him and open subsidiaries in America. Rémy agreed.  Running a team of truckers Six months later, the employer went bankrupt and asked Rémy to help him run a team of truckers from Virginia to Louisiana to fetch the equipment from the various subsidiaries to sell it off. The value of experience It is vital to be curious and have diverse experiences. Learning from your experiences and applying what you learned is valuable because that will help you develop responsibility and become more competent as a leader. Hotel in Paris Rémy learned most of what he knows today from working for a Sofitel hotel in Paris, answering client requests, and organizing meetings and events. After six months, he got promoted to manager. He spent the next five years working for the hotel, doing different jobs.  The key to success Rémy's curiosity was the key to his success in his first job.  Mission When you work for an organization, you will have a mission. Find out what the missions of those working around you are too, and get to know who does what. You will earn the respect of your co-workers when you listen to them and make an effort to understand what they do. Predict the unpredictable Rémy believes that part of any job in the events industry is predicting the unpredictable. The more experience you have, the easier it becomes. Montreaux Montreaux is a beautiful, panoramic city. Everyone Rémy has ever invited there has returned!  Entertainment in Montreaux Discovering all the entertainment in Montreaux was a whole new world for Rémy! As well as the famous Montreaux Jazz Festival, Montreaux also hosts the oldest classical music festival and the largest French-speaking humor festival in Switzerland.  Creating enjoyable and unique experiences Everything Rémy has done in his life has helped prepare him for what he does now. It is all about hosting people and creating enjoyable and unique experiences. MPI Starting an MPI chapter in France helped Rémy grow. It also helped him improve various aspects of his personality and brush up on his public speaking. Science has always been about improving human understanding of our universe…but scientists have not always prioritized accessibility of their hard-won results. The deeper research digs into specialized sub-fields and daunting data sets, the greater the divide a team must cross to help communicate their findings not just to the public, but to other scientists. It is cliché: “A picture’s worth a thousand words.” But it’s the truth: strong visual communication helps readers make the choice to dig into dense manuscripts, and helps journal editors decide whose work gets published in the first place. Good dataviz can get complexity across in less time and with less effort, help public audiences grasp science better and appreciate the beauty that inspired the research to start with.Deciding how to represent research in graphic form is both a little science and a little art: it takes developing an understanding of what information matters and what doesn’t, and how other people will absorb it. Thus it should come as no surprise that in our noisy era, the data artist rises as a hero of both fields: empowered by technology to bridge dissociated disciplines and help us all learn more and better. This week’s episode is with Kirell Benzi, a data artist and data visualization lecturer who holds a PhD in Data Science from EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne). Kirell’s work has been shown in outlets as diverse as the Swiss National Museum, Gizmodo, VICE, and Phys.org. In this recording, we discuss his projects mapping the Montreaux Jazz Festival and the Star Wars Extended Universe, the future of neural-network assisted data visualization, and how data art helps with the technical and ethical challenges facing science communication in the 21st Century. If you enjoy this podcast, please help us reach a wider audience by leaving a review at Apple Podcasts, or sharing the show on social media. Daniel Johnston bookends today's show with in-between bits courtesy of Benjamin Clementine, Trampled by Turtles and even Slash among others. Plus we uncover the sampled track featured in a stadium-filling indie classic, by accident. Track Listing True Love Will Find You In the End Daniel JohnstonLondon Benjamin ClementineAlone Trampled by TurtlesIn The Meantime SpacehogTelephone and Rubber Band Penguin Café OrchestraProof I am KlootStarlight Slash and Myles KennedySpace Ducks Theme Song Daniel Johnston Hi, How Are You? Daniel Johnston bookends our show today. A singer-songwriter widely regarded as a significant figure in alternative music scenes. Much of Daniel Johnston's catalogue is home recorded and often cited as being "childlike". In the show, Richard talks of his personal experiences with family members and Daniel but sadly this episode in his life has long since been over. We discussed in the show that Kurt Cobain wore a t-shirt with artwork from Daniel's Yip/Jump Music album. This is actually incorrect. Kurt wore a t-shirt depicting artwork from Johnston's Hi, How Are You? LP but cited Yip/Jump Music as one of his favourite records of 1993. This proved to be a hell of a recommendation. Hence there ensued a bidding war between record labels to sign him. Despite Daniel being resident in a mental hospital at that time. Plagued by mental health issues He has suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder all his life. Daniel had a psychotic episode after appearing at a music festival in 1990 whilst being flown back to West Virginia by his father Bill (a former USAF pilot) in his 2 seater plane. He believed he was Casper the Friendly Ghost and removed the keys from the plane's ignition and threw them outside. Miraculously Bill managed to crash land the plane in a densely wooded area. Both sustained only minor injuries. The incident completely destroyed the plane. Daniel Johnston was involuntarily admitted to mental hospital again after the incident. Further, in his career, Daniel was the subject of a Sundance Film Festival Director's Award winning film (2005) The Devil and Daniel Johnston. The highly praised film collates much of Daniel's vast output. It proved to inspire more interest in Daniel's work. In 2012 he published his comic book Space Ducks - An Infinite Comic Book of Musical Greatness which apparently has a linked iOs app which we have been spectacularly unable to find. Daniel retired from performing live in 2017. Apple used his song The Story of an Artist in a TV commercial in 2018. Benjamin Sainte-Clémentine What a rich story for such a young man. As Tobin mentioned in the show, Benjamin was homeless in Paris by the time he was leaving his teens. As a result of performing music on the streets he became something of a cult figure in the Parisian music scene. He composed and wrote during the day and performed in the evening. Because of this, he managed to stay out of trouble. He was eventually spotted by an agent and a meeting was set up for the following day. Before signing a major deal, Clementine was working with a French tour agent and the independent label set up through Lionel Bensemoun (a French business mogul) which enabled Clementine to record his music. He was booked for some major festivals, the Montreaux Jazz Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Eurosonic Festival, the latter of which he was billed as one of the highlights. As a result of these performances, Clementine was billed for the 2013 North Sea Jazz Festival but failed to turn up. He was thrown off a train for failing to have a valid ticket, something he attributed to not being paid by his agent. Penniless he began the 45km walk to Rotterdam to perform, which eventually took him 10 hours, thus missing his stage appearance. He arrived at his destination with bare feet and bleeding toes. Regardless of this setback, he received an invite to play at the festival in 2015.
