In this episode of The Adam Carolla Show, Adam kicks things off by reflecting on who's really keeping cities like Los Angeles running—and how traffic patterns seem to be changing in surprising ways. He shares a bizarre memory of acting in Frank McKlusky, C.I., a film that tried (and failed) to ride the coattails of Ace Ventura. Plus, Adam recaps his recent tour of the Pacific Palisades and gives an update on the progress (or lack thereof) in rebuilding. In the news, Jason “Mayhem” Miller joins to break down some wild headlines: A disturbing attempted kidnapping caught on camera in Coney Island, Mayor Karen Bass's furious response to an ICE raid in a gang-heavy LA neighborhood, and new drama surrounding Gary Coleman's death as his ex-wife flunks a televised lie detector test.Later, actor Justin Bartha calls in to discuss his new movie Nuked, and chats with Adam about his career highlights—including National Treasure and The Hangover. Adam asks the question on everyone's mind: Will there ever be a National Treasure 3? Ep 180 — John Taylor 1886 Permanent Polygamy Revelation | National Treasure

Glass Box Podcast

The Church History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints just dropped a revelatory bomb on the Mormon history community and we're gunna talk about it. John Taylor (prophet 1880-1887) wrote a revelation saying that the new and everlasting covenant is actually “everlasting” and cannot be revoked or abrogated. However, the prophet after Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, wrote the First Manifesto bringing the church into compliance with the law of the land. However, plural marriages continued to be performed. The Reed Smoot hearings turned the eyes of the nation to the kingdom of god in Deseret and every clandestine plural marriage put a lie to the Manifesto. Church leaders are excommunicated and it leads to the formation of the Fundamentalist Latter-day Saints. The church has suppressed this revelation in its vaults for nearly a century while openly denying that it even existed. After that we chat about more secrets hiding in plain sight with the movie National Treasure. We wrap with happy news about diabetes therapy and a gaggle of listener mail.   Show Notes:  https://catalog.churchofjesuschrist.org/assets/3aec2ea6-fdeb-4866-9529-47e27f9cd3b9/0/0?lang=eng https://catalog.churchofjesuschrist.org/record/71550f40-40e2-4f22-a513-d9efed66649a/0?view=browse https://mormonr.org/qnas/vFgD6f/john_taylors_1886_revelation?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22720170685&gbraid=0AAAAAoS5E7acFZisa2VHLpSqmjwjxuxAo&gclid=Cj0KCQjw953DBhCyARIsANhIZoZY8hL6lOziHIlmcVnNbCHkiECSLz8brsdbJy0ni61rrba3Qcklb8oaAkVpEALw_wcB https://www.dialoguejournal.com/articles/lds-church-authority-and-new-plural-marriages-1890-1904/ https://mormonr.org/qnas/vFgD6f/john_taylors_1886_revelation/research#re-fbkJxk-qnXgKg https://bhroberts.org/records/fbkJxk-bB2xDk/byu_religious_studies_center_publication_on_john_taylor_discusses_the_1886_revelation https://bhroberts.org/files/bHthmd/scan-bB2xDk-bHthmd.pdf?r=bB2xDk&t=eyJhbGciOiJkaXIiLCJlbmMiOiJBMjU2R0NNIn0..Ljnea7CqFcI514tv.MWAtt1USKQyIBx5hJeD1he-VlQl6HV5eDevc9XGHctIBqDnl3hQ6UY9uGlOYy3cJoJ6SG7H9UgXWNRtSHGg4AWQTt76BTFyruwynbZPv-ta9Sqwc1MiNTMA4D5bJ0wDKNLqn1I1ZW96aQh9fE3XonduR9AeovvqRkhlf80-xZsjjnHaGWGILhfe6hlbWunSLVvMxtMKbcmJywR4aR8z_2aD9_NRxC1-fb0e3If80Vy9otGsidu2NjHcmecljQwblGIFvHsSDUoBKqB8NH7VohmRAoJxTnqjoy8vYxcyw0j7Q8HcUBPyzQmLSU_lvRxvRly2pxjTCo6Ng-OlNVohEmFSQAWXo80Qi7R54xy1xIvW2_lP0pXMRw9VRIizzbfUcmspMcRwqC0aBtSI9_QhVFAiom1w.DIL9f7HVhjoKTWkeFO1Sqw https://mormonpolygamydocuments.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/1886-Revelation-article.pdf https://www.fairlatterdaysaints.org/answers/John_Taylor%27s_statements_regarding_polygamy https://rsc.byu.edu/champion-liberty-john-taylor/john-revelator-written-revelations-john-taylor#_note-40 https://timesandseasons.org/index.php/2025/06/john-taylor-and-the-1886-revelation/ https://www.josephsmithpapers.org/person/john-taylor https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/first-annual-message-first-term https://josephsmithfoundation.org/john-taylors-last-days-vision-1877/ https://www.fromthedesk.org/john-taylor-revelations/#_ftn1 https://rsc.byu.edu/champion-liberty-john-taylor/john-revelator-written-revelations-john-taylor#_noteref-14 https://web.archive.org/web/20080309131303/http://gainesjunction.tamu.edu/issues/vol3num1/ishin/ishin.pdf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JYcVJKnfmg https://rsc.byu.edu/prophets-apostles-last-dispensation/john-whittaker-taylor https://historicalgeneralconferences.weebly.com/john-w-taylor.html https://tokensandsigns.org/betrayed-for-loyalty-john-w-taylor-and-polygamy/ https://mormondiscussionpodcast.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2020/09/John-W.-Taylor-Trial.pdf https://sunstone.org/john-w-woolley-as-a-highly-trusted-mormon-from-september-1886-to-december-1913/ https://mormonfundamentalism.com/history/lorin-c-woolley-and-his-council-of-seven-friends/ https://mormonpolygamydocuments.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/MF0273.pdf https://mormonfundamentalism.com/1886-revelation-importance/ https://www.fromthedesk.org/joseph-white-musser-mormon-fundamentalist/ https://prophetsseersandrevelators.wordpress.com/2022/09/01/third-manifesto/ https://www.intermountainhistories.org/items/show/704 https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/first-annual-message-first-term   MOGP: National Treasure: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0368891/?ref_=tt_rvi_i_7  Where it's streaming: https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/national-treasure  Information about Charles Carroll: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Carroll_of_Carrollton#  Explore the Knights Templar:  https://www.centreofexcellence.com/the-knights-templar/#    Happy News: A new diabetes treatment could free people from insulin injections: https://www.sciencenews.org/article/type-1-diabetes-cell-therapy-insulin    Other appearances: Chris Shelton interviewed us in the beginning of a series on Mormonism. We engage in a profound analysis of the film's themes, particularly its depiction of patriotic fervor and the allure of hidden treasures rooted in American history. Throughout the discourse, we reflect upon the film's characters, notably the charismatic portrayal by Nicolas Cage, and the dynamic interplay between humor and tension that enriches the viewing experience. As we delve deeper, we also scrutinize the plausibility of the film's plot devices, acknowledging the necessity of suspension of disbelief within such an adventurous context. Ultimately, our conversation encapsulates a shared appreciation for the film's ability to entertain while simultaneously provoking thoughtful engagement with history and conspiracy theories.Support us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us: hosts@whatsourverdict.comFollow us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

TALK TO ME, TEXT ITEver wonder what stories slip through the cracks of mainstream media coverage? From unexpected revelations in high-profile cases to bizarre medical procedures gone wrong, today's episode dives into the news you won't hear elsewhere. The Department of Justice and FBI have officially closed their investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, concluding he did not maintain a client list and confirming his death as suicide. After years of speculation and conspiracy theories, these findings directly contradict popular narratives about the case. Even more surprisingly, the Trump administration plans to release video evidence supporting these conclusions. Whether this will satisfy public curiosity or simply fuel further questions remains to be seen.We also explore the dangerous world of cosmetic surgery, specifically the Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure, which carries not only risks of death and infection but also the unexpected and unpleasant side effect of odor from tissue death. Two disturbing missing persons cases receive updates: Travis Decker, the fugitive father accused of murdering his three young daughters, may have been spotted in Idaho's vast Sawtooth National Forest, while authorities in Turks and Caicos have launched a murder investigation after discovering a decomposed body believed to be missing Manhattan resident Brian Terrence, who mysteriously disappeared during a romantic getaway. What national treasure would you most like to visit? Why The Da Vinci Code Movie Bombed: Our Hilarious Rewatch And Hot Takes

Fully-Booked: Literary Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 2, 2025 34:21

We kick off with the hosts' cheerful greeting and their confession that they recorded the Fully-Booked: Literary Podcast ahead of schedule, joking that it is “the last week of June… but not really.” They remind us that June on Fully-Booked has been all about banned books, and they want to finish with something big. While scanning international censorship lists, Meaghan notices that The Da Vinci Code has been pulled from shelves in Lebanon, India, Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan, and the Philippines. The reason is simple enough: some Christian leaders find the novel's ideas offensive.Shirin admits she did not realize Lebanon has such a large Christian population, and the pair laugh at their own ignorance before pivoting to the film version they are about to rewatch. They also poke fun at their ongoing knack for picking “the worst movie adaptation possible,” a running joke that keeps listeners feeling part of an inside circle.Revisiting The Da Vinci Code: Book Hype, Film Fever, and Worldwide UproarWe move from playful chit-chat to the cultural moment of 2003, when Dan Brown's novel exploded onto every bookstore display. The hosts recall how the familiar red hardcover stamped with a sliver of the Mona Lisa seemed to stare you down in every airport. Within two years, the book had sold tens of millions of copies, appeared in forty-plus languages, and sparked feverish speculation about secret societies, coded messages, and a hidden bloodline of Christ. And Hollywood pounced. In 2006, Ron Howard delivered a glossy blockbuster starring Tom Hanks, Alfred Molina, Ian McKellen, and Paul Bettany. At the time, Shirin remembers thinking the movie was “the shit,” full of twists that felt like National Treasure with better haircuts.Yet outside a Boston theater on opening night, she saw live protests, something a Canadian teenager did not expect on a school trip. That mash-up of box-office buzz and genuine outrage fascinates the hosts; it proves a thriller can still hit raw nerves when it challenges sacred stories.National Treasure, Nicolas Cage, and Tangents We Can't ResistBecause no Fully-Booked episode is complete without at least one joyful detour, we zoom off to Shirin's devotion to National Treasure. She owns a T-shirt with Nicolas Cage's face, and the declaration “I'm gonna steal the Declaration,” makes her husband watch the film annually and defend its goofy charm at every opportunity.Meaghan, who once watched the movie constantly with her mother, agrees it is “terrible but fun.” Comparing ratings, they discover that Cage's romp actually edges out The Da Vinci Code on Rotten Tomatoes, an outcome they find both hilarious and strangely satisfying. This lighthearted break matters. It shows how personal nostalgia shapes our judgment. Sometimes we cling to a so-so movie because it reminds us of family vacations or Friday sleepovers, not because it is a cinematic masterpiece. We feel that tug, too; I still grin whenever I hear Cage whisper “I'm going to steal it,” and I suspect many listeners have a similar guilty-pleasure favorite.Characters, Plot Holes, and Why the Film Falls FlatBack to business: the hosts dissect why the 2006 adaptation drags. First, length. At two-and-a-half hours, it spread over three separate viewing sessions in Meaghan's living room. Second, plausibility. The victim supposedly staggers through the Louvre after being shot in the gut, leaving a breadcrumb trail of riddles in his own blood, yet still has the mental clarity to craft a sophisticated code. We agree with the hosts that this stretches believability to comic levels; our stomach hurts just imagining the crawl, never mind the cryptography. Third, character depth. In the book, Sophie Neveu is a brilliant police cryptographer; on screen, she turns doe-eyed, waiting for Robert Langdon to solve everything. Tom Hanks, lovable as ever, cannot overcome a script that reduces side characters to exposition machines. It feels as if a longer, richer draft was chopped down by anxious studio editors trying to hit a release date. The result is a movie that teaches the audience how to Google but forgets to give its heroine agency. We nod along when the hosts groan, “This person who's this intelligent would not act like that.”Final Thoughts: Rating Rants, Unfinished Franchises, and What Comes NextWrapping up, the hosts admit they wanted to love the film. They felt a pang of nostalgia, hitting play, wishing the old rush of “twist on every page” would return.Instead, they found themselves pausing for snacks, baby duties, and the occasional disbelief-fuelled rant. Rotten Tomatoes sits at a meager 25 percent critic score, and once the hosts read that aloud, they cannot unsee the flaws.Meanwhile, Angels and Demons and Inferno limp on with the same creative team but never reclaim the lightning in a bottle. Even a short-lived TV spin-off, The Lost Symbol, failed to survive past one season. The conversation closes with laughter, apologies to any die-hard fans, and a promise that Meaghan will choose next month's adaptations more carefully. The bigger takeaway is relatable: we all remember a book or movie that blew our adolescent minds, only to find it wobbly on rewatch. The hosts show us it's okay to change our minds, poke fun at past tastes, and still respect the cultural storm a story once created. As we finish, we feel like we sat on the couch with two friends who love books, love movies, and love cracking jokes about both, exactly the kind of company we crave when the credits roll.

When you picture the Declaration of Independence, what comes to mind? Most people envision a single, iconic document–parchment, signatures, maybe even a scene from National Treasure. But what if I told you, the Declaration of Independence isn't just one document, but many documents? And that each version of the Declaration tells a different story–a story not just about American independence, but about the people who printed, read, preserved, and even re-wrote the Declaration? Emily Sneff is one of the leading experts on the Declaration of Independence. She has spent more than a decade researching the Declaration's origins, and its different copies. She's the former research manager of the Declaration Resources Project at Harvard, a consulting curator for Revolution 250 exhibits at the Museum of the American Revolution and the American Philosophical Society, and I'm proud to say, she's is one of our former interns here at Ben Franklin's World. Let's Chat!Step behind the curtain of "The Relic Hunter" as I unveil the creative inspirations, character motivations, and mythology that shaped this adventure series. This wrap-up episode isn't just a recap – it's a gateway into understanding the deeper themes that make these stories resonate. What began as my love for classic adventure tales like Tomb Raider and National Treasure evolved into something more profound. The Relic Hunter's journey mirrors our own quest for meaning – sometimes we must venture far outside ourselves to discover what's been inside all along. Every treasure, every relic, was carefully designed not just as a plot device, but as a symbol of personal transformation.Kale's character represents the ultimate sacrifice and partnership. Her evolution from sidekick to savior explores how relationships can fundamentally change us. When she and the Relic Hunter ascended together as king and queen, it marked a pivotal moment in our expanding story universe – the first time the Shadow King elevated a partnership rather than a single ruler. This wasn't just a plot twist; it was a statement about equality and the power of true connection. The interconnected mythology featuring the Shadow King, Buried King, and now the Invisible King continues to grow. If you enjoyed this series, revisit "The Lost Samurai" to discover how Alistair became the Buried King, and prepare yourself for my next project "Remembrance" – a futuristic thriller that will push boundaries even further. The universe is expanding, and your support has made it possible. Remember, you create your reality – both in these stories and in life. Subscribe now and join me on the next chapter of this journey."True mastery is found in the details. The way you handle the little things defines the way you handle everything."

Send us a textAdventure films are a delicate balance of charm, wonder, and heart—which is why "Fountain of Youth" is such a fascinating disappointment to dissect. What should have been a thrilling revival of a beloved genre instead becomes a masterclass in missed opportunities. The frustration comes not from the film being terrible (we've seen worse), but from how tantalizingly close it comes to greatness before veering off course. With John Krasinski, Natalie Portman, and stunning locations around the world, all the ingredients were there. Yet something vital is missing: soul.Great adventure protagonists care deeply about something—Indiana Jones respects artifacts even while stealing them, Benjamin Gates in National Treasure risks everything to protect historical treasures while pursuing them. Krasinski's Luke, by contrast, moves through the story with curious detachment, displaying impressive combat skills without explanation and making quips that never land with the intended charm. The supporting cast fares no better, with potentially interesting characters reduced to exposition machines. The chemistry between leads is nonexistent despite the script insisting otherwise. Even the central mystery—the Fountain of Youth itself—operates on confusing, inconsistent rules that change to serve the plot rather than create a coherent mythology. What makes this analysis worthwhile is recognizing how "Fountain of Youth" illuminates exactly what makes adventure films work by doing the opposite. It's a reminder that spectacle without heart falls flat, that heroes need vulnerability alongside capability, and that audiences want to feel wonder alongside the characters discovering ancient secrets. If you love adventure cinema and want to understand why some attempts work brilliantly while others fail, join us for this deep dive into a film that might just kill the genre it hoped to revitalize. Subscribe, share your thoughts in the comments, and let us know what adventure classics you'd recommend instead!Written lovingly with AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT

At any rate, it's back now and Beth is going to be OK.  Then, we pivot to other critical debates: the best (and *worst*) ways to haul your sleep-deprived family to DLP, and whether two days in the park counts as a “vacation” or a “cry for help.”    GEMS YOU CAN'T MISS:  Mickey and the Magician:  The only place where "abracadabra" actually works - turning overtired parents into wide-eyed believers of Disney magic (for approximately 22 minutes). Send us a textMay 2025 marked a historic turning point for theatrical exhibition with box office numbers approaching $1 billion on just 128 releases – half the number required to hit that mark pre-pandemic. This stunning 75% year-over-year growth signals what could be the full recovery of theatrical moviegoing after years of uncertainty.Behind this remarkable surge were five films crossing the $100 million domestic threshold, led by Disney's surprisingly dominant "Lilo and Stitch" ($260M domestic) and Marvel's "Thunderbolts" ($180M). Perhaps most unexpected was "Final Destination: Bloodlines," the sixth entry in a long-dormant franchise that managed to earn over $200M worldwide – proving audiences still hunger for inventive horror when executed properly. The hosts dissect several recent releases, finding much to be desired in "Bring Her Back," the sophomore effort from the directors behind A24's "Talk to Me." Despite strong performances and effective sound design, the film's telegraphed storytelling undermines its potential for genuine suspense. Similarly disappointing is Guy Ritchie's "Fountain of Youth," described as a "dollar store version of Indiana Jones and National Treasure" despite its star-studded cast. Netflix's "Fear Street: Prom Queen" fares better as a fun but lesser entry in the franchise, while HBO's tech billionaire satire "Mountainhead" delivers mixed results.Looking forward, excitement builds for Wes Anderson's "The Phoenician Scheme," the Ana de Armas-led "Ballerina," and Ty West's vampire film premiering at Tribeca. The hosts also share news of Luca Guadagnino directing an AI business comedy and James Cameron tackling a dark fantasy project called "The Devils." These developments, alongside the emergence of AI-themed narratives as a distinct subgenre, reflect how cinema continues to process our collective anxieties and fascinations.Catch Alex and Max each week as they explore theatrical releases, streaming debuts, and industry developments with insight and enthusiasm that reminds us why movies still matter.Support the show

Send us a textDo you remember National Treasure, starring Nicolas Cage? We do because we love a good Adventure. After all, it has so many movie genre ingredients and if you throw Nicolas Cage into the recipe well hot damn. And if Nicolas Cage wasn't enough, it also has Diane Kruger,  Sean Bean, Jon Voight, Harvey Keitel & Christopher Plummer, all of whom we don't remember being in this movie at all. So this should be fun.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?
