Food and religion collide in many ways - from fasting to feasting and through strict rules, symbolic dishes, and traditional foodways that span across centuries. Today, we look closely at this relationship, examining what holy texts and historical circumstances can tell us about how we eat today. We explore the legacy of Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine, look at the Impossible pork dilemma for those who abide by halal or kosher restrictions, travel to the Garden of Eden to see if there was any meat, and get to know the devil's relationship with dieting. One of the most recognizable Jewish dishes is the gefilte fish. Often served with a cooked carrot and a side of beets and horseradish sauce, known as chrein, it's probably the most classic appetizer at any Ashkenazi shabbos table. In this episode, we begin with the history of the gefilte and actually discover it wasn't originally a Jewish creation! We then continue to learn why it nonetheless became an essential part of the Shabbos meals. In the process, we uncover the deep Kabbalistic reasons behind eating fish on shabbos in general, as well as the halachik (Jewish Law) reasons for specifically eating gefilte fish. Happy Listening! Rabbi Neal Borovitz vividly remembers Passover growing up---his Grandfather at the head of the table, surrounded by his numerous grandchildren, dozens of family members and neighbors crowding around too few tables. Because while he believes religion and spirituality are important, these rituals---of Seders, of Gefilte Fish, of reading Sholom Aleichem---those are the ones we remember nearly 70 years down the road. Come and learn from Rabbi Borovitz the elder about the Kaifeng Jews, Jacob's ladder, and how we can always remember the roller coaster of life is an ongoing process.
When Liz Alpern arrived at business school, she didn’t exactly fit in. She rocked a carefully styled lesbian haircut, smelled of onions, and professed a deep passion for her gefilte fish company. At her big presentation, she was met with blank stares from her straight (laced) classmates. For the first time in her life, Liz's path to success was brought into question.
