Artists, explorers, and scientists are recording audio of Antarctica sea ice melting, hoping the sounds help people sympathize with the environmental crisis. After months of heavy storms, California's mountains now have some of the largest snowpacks on record. But how fast could the snow melt and produce flooding? After Janet Protasiewicz gets sworn in as a Wisconsin Supreme Court justice, the liberal minority there will become a majority. It could have implications for the 2024 presidential election. The arrest of American journalist Evan Gershkovich in Russia sparked outrage in the U.S. Moscow detained the Wall Street Journal reporter on espionage charges. Gefilte fish is a mixture of ground fish, onion and carrot, bound with egg and matzo meal, and seasoned with optional sugar, salt and white pepper. It's traditionally cooked in a rich fish broth.

Food and religion collide in many ways - from fasting to feasting and through strict rules, symbolic dishes, and traditional foodways that span across centuries. Today, we look closely at this relationship, examining what holy texts and historical circumstances can tell us about how we eat today. We explore the legacy of Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine, look at the Impossible pork dilemma for those who abide by halal or kosher restrictions, travel to the Garden of Eden to see if there was any meat, and get to know the devil's relationship with dieting. Further Reading:This episode featured Meat and Three bonus episode, Fasting and Feasting in Quarantine. Find Jeffrey's company, the Gefilteria, here and check out his book, the Gefilte Manifesto here.To learn more about Jonah Goldman's coverage on Impossible Pork not being certified by OU and IFANCA, read his article in The Counter.Victoria Moran is an American author and speaker, specializing in both spirituality and veganism. One of the most recognizable Jewish dishes is the gefilte fish. Often served with a cooked carrot and a side of beets and horseradish sauce, known as chrein, it's probably the most classic appetizer at any Ashkenazi shabbos table. In this episode, we begin with the history of the gefilte and actually discover it wasn't originally a Jewish creation! We then continue to learn why it nonetheless became an essential part of the Shabbos meals. In the process, we uncover the deep Kabbalistic reasons behind eating fish on shabbos in general, as well as the halachik (Jewish Law) reasons for specifically eating gefilte fish. Happy Listening! In honor of Passover, we’re talking everything from matzo to schmaltz. Alana Newhouse, the editor in chief of Tablet, stops by to discuss her new book, The 100 Most Jewish Foods, with Cherry Bombe Special Projects Director (and matzo ball soup aficionado) Lauren Goldstein. In the second half of the show, Radio Cherry Bombe Associate Producer Jess Zeidman talks to Liz Alpern of Queer Soup Night and The Gefilteria about all things gefilte fish and why she’d invite Oprah to her seder. Plus, Executive Pastry Chef Paola Velez of Kith & Kin in Washington, D.C., tells us who she thinks is the bombe. Special thanks to Handsome Brook Farm Pasture Raised Organic Eggs for supporting this season of Radio Cherry Bombe!

Amanda kvells about being the kugel queen and Alison admits to her secret old man crush. The long story:  Alison explains to a Publix employee what gefilte fish is, which reminds Amanda about the time she had a Gefilte fish tasting at work.  The sisters somehow get on the topic of their Old Man Crushes and Amanda is devastated to learn that Alison's is very obscure and not mentioned on her list. Like who doesn't love Harrison Ford or Jeff Goldblum? ALISON! But she makes up for it by telling a behind the scenes story of interviewing Crispin Glover of Back to the Future Fame. And don't worry, Crispin is NOT her #oldmancrush. Sis & Tell, voted "Best Podcast" finalist for Creative Loafing's Best of Atlanta 2018, is a weekly podcast hosted by sisters Alison Goldstein Lebovitz from PBS' The A List and comedian Amanda Goldstein Marks.
