With Mary Lee Corlett, Scruggs and Morris are the co-curators of "Elizabeth Catlett: A Black Revolutionary Artist" at the National Gallery of Art, Washington. The exhibition surveys Catlett's career across over 150 sculptures, prints, paintings, and drawings. The exhibition is on view through July 6. An exceptional exhibition catalogue, titled Elizabeth Catlett: A Black Revolutionary Artist and All That It Implies was published by the The University of Chicago Press, the NGA and the Brooklyn Museum, which originated the exhibition. It is available from Amazon and Bookshop for $56-60. Catlett was a feminist, activist, and radical who helped join the Black Left in the US to influences from the Mexican Revolution. Her work continued the practice of earlier US artists such as Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, and Carleton Watkins by using cultural production to advance ideas and ideologies. Cortez is featured in "Seeds: Containers of a World to Come" at the Kemper Art Museum, Washington University in St. Louis. The exhibition features work by ten artists whose research-driven practices are informed by inquiry into plant-human-land relations. "Seeds" was curated by Meredith Malone and Svea Braeunert, and remains on view through July 28. The exhibition brochure is available here. "Beatriz Cortez x rafa esparza: Earth and Cosmos" is at the Americas Society, New York through May 17. The show considers the idea of ancient objects traveling across space and time. Cortez's work explores simultaneity, life in different temporalities, and imaginaries of the future. She has been featured in solo exhibitions at Storm King Art Center, New Windsor, NY,; the Williams College Museum of Art; Clockshop, Los Angeles; and more. “I have not only grown gray but almost blind in service to my country.” This is the story (or tale) of two cities.  In Paris, Ben Franklin, John Adams, John Jay and (briefly) Henry Laurens are negotiating the terms of American independence. They know what they want, but getting there will require outmaneuvering the greatest powers on earth and defying Congress. Will they do as they've been instructed? Or risk it all and swing for the fence?  Meanwhile, Continental Army officers in New Windsor, New York, are fed up with Congress's broken promises. Soldiers have been waiting in vain for their payments for years—will the end of the war change anything, or will their pensions be ignored too? The beleaguered men are even considering violence… could a military coup end the American experiment before the peace treaty is even signed? Help us George Washington. Planning Board pans Beacon project Members of the Beacon Planning Board were cautious last year when they began their review of a proposal to construct two 4-story buildings at the busy corner of North Avenue (Route 9D) and Beekman Street. A stone's throw from City Hall and the soon-to-be-completed Beacon fire station, the 45 Beekman St. site is a prominent feature of one of the entrances to the city and offers the opportunity to repair some of the damage done in the 1960s and '70s by urban renewal, the board members said. Earlier this month, they delivered a stinging assessment of the plan, which was created by Beacon architect Aryeh Siegel and Colliers Engineering & Design of New Windsor. The project would require the demolition of the three-story former Beacon Popmart building. After merging that parcel with two adjacent vacant lots, Beekman Arts Center and Bay Ridge Studios would construct two buildings with 15,000 square feet of commercial space at street level and 64 one- and two-bedroom apartments. During the Planning Board's Sept. 10 meeting, renderings showed brick-and-glass exteriors and, on one building, an all-glass corner tower extending to a recessed fourth floor. The second, smaller structure, called the High Street Building on renderings, would mostly front Beekman, with a first-floor walkway running along the exterior of the buildings. According to the drawings, the buildings would be constructed close to the sidewalk on Beekman, which project officials said is based on a recommendation for the Linkage district in the city's 2017 comprehensive plan. But the placement of the buildings alone won't be enough to "engage the pedestrian," the board members said. "It's Anywhere, Anytown U.S.A. mediocre architecture," said John Gunn, the chair, before the board referred the project to its architectural review committee. "To me, it's just a mishmash of forms that have no context, no relationship. My God, what a missed opportunity if this is what ends up getting built." Board member Kevin Byrne contrasted the covered walkway and brick exterior of the buildings. "It's like two different things are happening and they're not talking to each other," he said. The developer is in talks with the state Department of Transportation to purchase up to a half-acre of land that would bring the building at the corner of Beekman and Route 9D close to the Beekman sidewalk. The traffic signals at Route 9D and Beekman, as well as at 9D and Verplanck Avenue, would be timed to mitigate traffic at the intersection, where cars leaving the Metro-North station on weekday afternoons routinely back up while waiting to get to Interstate 84. The Planning Board will continue its review at its Oct. 8 meeting. 19 Henry St. The board will continue a public hearing next month on the proposal to build four attached, two-story townhomes on a quarter-acre Henry Street parcel. The townhomes would each feature a one-car garage and back patio. A single-family home and accessory structures on the lot would be demolished. Two Catherine Steet residents spoke during the hearing on Sept. 10. One was concerned about noise and privacy while the other mentioned displacement of water from swampy areas behind Henry Street. The developer may use evergreen trees, rather than deciduous, to screen between the townhomes and Catherine Street, while the project engineer said that runoff from the building would be directed away from Catherine. 14 North Cedar St. A proposal for a two-story, four-unit apartment building on an empty North Cedar Street lot returned to the Planning Board this month for the first time since June 2023. Board members advised the developer, who plans to use a modular building, to opt for a site plan that fits with the surrounding neighborhood. "The building isn't situated on the lot like any other residential building in the neighborhood, so it's going to stand out," Byrne said. "The old fabric in this town is something that doesn't exist in many p...

In this joint interview, fire chief Tom Lucchesi and veteran firefighter Pat Kelliher talk about fires and firefighting in Beacon.  Not so long ago, volunteer firefighting in Beacon was a generational tradition. “When I started, there were 200 volunteers,” says Pat. “Your grandfather was one. Your father was one. You were one.” In those days the city's three firehouses had as many as 75 volunteers each. By contrast, today's fire department has 18 career firefighters and just five volunteers. The downward trend in volunteerism is not unique to Beacon. Across New York and the United States more broadly, the equipment and techniques of firefighting have become far more  advanced and professionalized, requiring extensive training, and the nature of fires has changed as well. People also have less time — and time off from work — to answer the call when a fire breaks out.  Tom also talks about the new $14.7 million firehouse, which is nearing completion.  A little more on our guests:  Pat Kelliher is a 54-year veteran of Beacon's volunteer force who retired earlier this year. The son of a Beacon police officer and the grandson of Irish immigrants, he was among the earliest wave of Vietnam draftees. On returning home, he found the fire department offered some of the camaraderie and shared purpose he experienced in the war.  Fire Chief Tom Lucchese was obsessed with emergency services from a young age. Raised in New Windsor, he worked for the Newburgh fire department through a series of budget cuts and layoffs. During a single one-month period he was demoted from Captain to Firefighter, then promoted to Captain, then promoted again to Assistant Chief. “It would only happen in Newburgh,” he says. “We can laugh now, but I feel very fortunate. There were many firefighters who lost their jobs.”

For someone with an artistic tempest inside his head, Mike "Skatchface" Long is a mellow dude. Art is not what he does - it's how he lives. Long grew up skating with the older kids in Poughkeepsie, developed his style and became low-key but well-known, especially among the tight-knit street art crowd. The latest issue of Newburgh-based hardcore punk 'zine Outsider devoted a spread to his work. A storefront he painted in Miami was included in Mana Public Arts: Murals by Leading Street Artists from Around the World, published in December. Last summer he moved to Beacon and calibrated his living circumstances well. He works at a modest home studio, his sons attend school nearby and one of his gigs is across the street. He just landed a job in New Windsor painting sets for Broadway shows, which he prefers to commuting to New York City. "Here, artists are taken seriously," he says of Beacon. "You can be creative and make a living; it's not a pipe dream." At 43, he is at a turning point. He still bombs around on a skateboard but sometimes his back flares up. His oldest son is in high school and his youngest is 9. So far, he has managed to pay the bills making art. He earned a degree in graphic design and got his nickname from an Austrian classmate who often asked to see his "skatchbook," meaning sketchbook. The face in Skatchface refers to his specialty. Some have grotesque, distorted expressions. Some scowl, others look frightened, and nearly all are painted in the wild. "The art establishment has no awareness of what the graffiti artists do," says Beacon pop artist Ron English, for whom Long has apprenticed over the last four years. "They're anti-capitalist, for one thing. One part of their social life is creating art on freight trains that will travel around the country. Highbrow artists try to sell what they create. But it's like jazz: When you do a deep dive, you understand and appreciate it more." With a family to support, Long took white-collar design jobs that he says slowly crushed his spirit. "It wasn't helping the creative process when the sun would come up and go down while I sat at my desk," he says. But he kept other outlets alive. "My passion is finding that cool spot at an abandoned place, being outdoors and creating." Around 100 of his intricate pieces stretch from Miami to Boston, and Long is starting to add his mark to the expansive brick and concrete canvases at the abandoned industrial sites that dot the Highlands. Taggers gotta tag, so his scrawled signature is also seen on the back of street signs, in bar bathrooms and on traffic light-control boxes. He affixes stickers to accommodating surfaces. Through Long's work with English and English's wife, Tarssa Yazdani, he has become part of the family. Part of his job is to complete practical tasks with computers and cameras to help conceptualize projects, but the trio also dreams up weird ideas and often films them. One brainstorm evolved into a sardonic book-burning event during Beacon Bonfire. Participants chanted slogans, contorted their faces like maniacs and toasted marshmallows. Long's sons took part. He supports their creative expressions but is laissez-faire. Clearly, he is proud that his eldest plays guitar in an alt-punk band, his youngest doodles and they both skate to a degree. To stretch his skill set, he plans to delve into sculpting and enjoys playing with an air compressor-powered spray paint gun for the first time. "They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks," he says, wearing cutoff shorts splattered with blotches of paint. "So if you keep learning new tricks, you're not an old dog."

Wide Angle: Why You Can't Fly From Stewart

HC Audio Stories

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 9, 2024 3:50

I moved to Beacon in 2010, and because my job involves travel, one of the considerations in the city's favor was the proximity to a regional airport. New York Stewart International, located across the river in New Windsor, seemed to offer convenient access to the U.S. air traffic system. Sure enough, I found that I could connect on American Airlines - through a daily flight to Philadelphia - to many of my most common destinations, such as San Francisco, Toronto and Florida. I accepted the fact that I had only limited options of airlines and flight times and that I had to travel to the Port Authority's other three airports (LaGuardia, JFK and Newark) for direct flights to most cities such as Austin, Texas, and for international flights to China, France and Ireland. But then we had the pandemic, and the large carriers, Delta and American, dropped their flights to and from Stewart. Today there are only a handful of airlines operating, and the destinations are limited to a few locations in the U.S. (mostly Florida) and cheap flights to Reykjavik and the Faroe Islands. And, of course, we are hearing the stories of near misses at airports, vacation snafus as airlines cancel thousands of flights because of too few staff and, most recently, a door "plug" blowing out in midflight. There's more at stake than the hours wasted driving to JFK to catch a flight to San Francisco. The situation at Stewart is not unique. The deregulation of the U.S. air travel industry in 1978 has not led to any of the claims its advocates provided in support of dismantling the regulated competition model that had served the country for 40 years, since the 1930s, in which a federal Civil Aeronautics Board allocated routes to airlines, including those to regional airports, and the prices of flights. Ganesh Sitaraman, a law professor at Vanderbilt University and the author of Why Flying is Miserable and How to Fix It, has said that "all the things that are a problem with flying are a function of public policy choices. We decide as a country that we want children's toys to be safe, that we want rural places to have electricity service, that we think banks should be able to function reliably. These are public policy choices to regulate or set up systems that advance goals we have as a country. When we have failures in these systems, it's a function of getting the policies wrong. That decision led to the situation we are in now. "The 1980s were defined by cutthroat competition between the airlines," Sitaraman has said. "A lot of new entrants offered no-frills service, had no unions and took on the high-volume traffic and high-traffic routes, for example. This initially meant more competition and lower prices on those routes. But the big airlines fought back and pushed out a lot of these new competitors, raised prices afterward, and consolidated into large fortress hubs like Atlanta, Dallas or Charlotte. "By the end of the decade, after dozens of bankruptcies and mergers, labor-management strife, declining service quality, congestion and lost baggage, there was a shakeout in the airlines that led to reconsolidation. The same big airlines that existed under regulation were still dominant, just without the checks of the regulated period. So, we moved from regulated oligopoly to unregulated oligopoly. Despite the airlines getting bailed out by the federal government during the pandemic to the tune of $50 billion, the Highlands and even many mid-sized cities such as Dubuque, Iowa, and Toledo, Ohio, have few options for air travel. The answer is obvious: reregulate the airlines. Sitaraman told The New York Times last month how this could be done: "In big cities, limit any single carrier to 30 percent of the flights. Require the big airlines to serve smaller markets. Require 'interlining,' in which airlines honor one another's tickets if one has a problem. Ban or regulate the offshoring of heavy aircraft maintenance, which is done in countries including China and El S...

Vanessa Maryanne Cheatham, also known as Veve C, was born on July 31, 1996. Although born in Englewood, New Jersey, Cheatham spent most of the earliest years of her life in Teaneck, New Jersey, where her paternal grandparents lived. She also lived in Hackensack, New Jersey, for about 3 years before moving to New Windsor, New York (where she spent most of her life.) Cheatham has always had music as a part of her life since childhood. At birth, Cheatham was named “Vanessa' after the legendary Vanessa Williams. However, her mother, Tonya Lavette Fitzpatrick Riley, was fascinated with butterflies because Cheatham's maternal grandmother called her and her sister Tamika Fitzpatrick “little butterflies.” Ironically she found out her name meant “butterfly” in Greek and Latin when she looked it up. Since 2014 Cheatham has lived in a single-parent household with her father Shawn Tyrone Cheatham Sr. and her younger brother Shawn Tyrone Cheatham Jr. In that same year, her mother moved to Savannah, Georgia, after Cheatham's high school graduation program and later remarried to Robert Riley.Cheatham described her childhood as “like heaven” and recalls how fun it was growing up as a kid in Jersey. She always had the best time with her paternal grandparents and being around her cousins, and the rest of her family made her feel very appreciated. However, childhood was not without its challenges. Cheatham was not well connected with her mother's side. She never met her maternal grandmother Mary Ann Williams because her life was taken away when her mother, Tonya Lavette Fitzpatrick Riley, was only 6 years of age. Her maternal grandfather was absent in her life for self reasons, but it caused Cheatham to develop a distant connection with him.Junior and senior years of high school were two of the most challenging years of Cheatham's life. She underwent periods of depression and found herself stressed to the point of pulling out her hair. Between her parents arguing (before getting divorced) and dealing with fake friendships, Cheatham faced challenges with her emotions. However, writing songs about her experiences helped her get through difficulties and with making her successful today. On April 29, 2021, Cheatham's mother died due to kidney disease and other unknown medical complications. However, Cheatham made it known that she will always make sure her mother's name is never forgotten.Cheatham's father, Shawn, belonged to a group called “Rock N Gee and DJ Shawn.” They were signed to Mercury Polygram Records, and her father was (and still is) the disc jockey. In 1989, the group “Rock N Gee and DJ Shawn” had a global hit with their song “Swing Beat,” which amassed worldwide. This was the inspiration Cheatham needed to pursue her passions and wanted to uphold her father's legacy.Aside from Cheatham's father, she was also inspired by well-known artists such as Aaliyah, Missy Elliot, Left Eye, and Brandy. She incorporates musical fragments and elements from the styles and sounds of these artists into her own while also maintaining a high level of authenticity. Giving her brief insight into what inspires her, Cheatham quotes, “In general, my failures have inspired me to work harder for my successes, and seeing people inspired by my works has inspired me. I get moved to know that my song changed someone's day, and that is what really matters to me.” Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Mike Doehla, Founder/CEO of Stronger U Nutrition, created an online nutrition coaching company that helps tens of thousands of individuals in more than 50 countries. His personal mission is to help people have a more enjoyable life, and he loves being able to improve the way the world eats. Mike enjoys travel, fitness, entrepreneurship, and good food. He resides in New Windsor, NY, with his wife Crista and his cat. In this episode, Mike shares the secret sauce to creating a successful business he has a hard time keeping up with. Imagine a company considered one of the fastest-growing ones in the US with no paid marketing employed. How could he have done that?  That's one thing to look forward to and learn, for sure. Even with his straightforward way of putting his content out there, you might think people repel him. But, he'll tell you why they find what he says makes sense to them, and they share instead. As someone who has been where you are probably now, he talks about breaking free from your own trap of overthinking about people's judgment for they don't matter.  As long as you come from a place of help, that will take care of the rest. And talk about self-awareness and how you can use that to jumpstart your journey to success. "I'm an example of someone who was worried and decided that I'm not letting other people dictate how I live my life; I'll be aware that there's judgment. And it's okay to care what people think; just don't let it control everything you do. Speak up. Ben Martin, West Point graduate and former Army Ranger, concludes this year's series on the American Revolutionary War.  Ben emphasizes the importance of General George Washington.  Our founding fathers put their lives on the line to ensure our rights of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.  Ben begins with a definition of a pyrrhic victory.  Although British General Cornwallis won the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, it was a pyrrhic victory as he lost so many men and so much military equipment that could never be recovered.  Cornwallis afterwards marches to Wilmington, North Carolina, in March of 1781.  Cornwallis does not meet up with his nemesis General Nathanael Greene, but other adversaries.  Cornwallis eventually surrenders but claims he is sick and sends General Charles O'Hara to surrender his sword to French General Lafayette.  Lafayette states that he is not in command and O'Hara must go to General George Washington, which he does.  Ben continues as Washington returns to New Windsor, New York, close to West Point, because of the numerous British troops present.  Ben examines events leading to the end of the war.  He references the importance of Washington's Newburgh speech.  Ben then moves to the Treaty of Paris signed on September 3, 1783, ending the Revolutionary War.  Ben discusses Washington's final speech to his officers as well as Washington's  speech in Annapolis when he resigns and says farewell to public life.  Ben's concludes with an analysis of this series on America's Revolutionary War.  Kim and Ben share a teaser for the 2022 series. Karen Levine, show sponsor and award-winning realtor with RE/MAX Alliance, 303-877-7516, comments that life is going fast and here we are at the end of another year.  There was opportunity this year in the housing arena and it will continue into next year.  Karen is filled with optimism.  She will continue to protect property rights and work with intention and purpose.  After all, everyday is a gift.  Happy New Year!

Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this podcast episode, I had the pleasure of talking with Paul James, Sr. Manager of Public Relations at Harley-Davidson, and Mike Case, Group Chief Engineer for Vehicle Platforms at Harley-Davidson about the Pan America, Harley's first dive into the adventure motorcycle market. To get up to speed, make sure to watch my video titled, The Real Harley-Davidson Pan America Adventure Touring Motorcycle Release-What You Want to Know! SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE With the adventure segment of the market already well established with bikes like the BMW R 1250 GS Adventure, a direct competitor to the Pan America, a ton of market research and customer feedback was gathered prior to the creation of the Pan America. I learned during our conversation that Harley-Davidson did not go into this project lightly and really did their homework to make sure the Pan America would be a serious competitor in the adventure market, yet with its own unique style and flare. This is a completely new frame and an all new engine, the Revolution Max 1250 liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, V-twin engine, which has double overhead camshafts. The Revolution Max puts out 145 horsepower, 94 ft-lb of torque, and gets around 46 mpg.  CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! There is a ton of technology baked into the Pan America such as adaptive ride height, rider modes, electronically adjustable suspension modes, a six-axis IMU, adaptive lighting, and a 6.8" touchscreen infotainment system, just to name a few.   Paul and Mike break everything down in this podcast episode to include the design process, specifications, and marketing of the Pan America. So, you'll have to listen in to this episode to get all the details. It'll be well worth your time if you're at all interested in this new adventure motorcycle from Harley-Davidson. Guests: Paul James has worked in powersports his entire career, working as a journalist in the snowmobile industry, in marketing at Arctic Cat, Inc. (snowmobile, ATV and PWC) and for the past 23 years at Harley-Davidson. Paul has held a variety of roles at H-D, including Marketing/PR, Events, Product Planning, and Go-to-Market. He is currently Sr. Manager Public Relations and is an avid motorcycle rider and racer. Mike Case is a lifelong motorcyclist and has spent his entire career in automotive and powersports and the last 19 years at Harley-Davidson. He is currently the Group Chief Engineer for Vehicle Platforms and oversaw the team that brought the all-new Pan America and Revolution Max engine to life.
