Sponsor: Every year there is a special place, on a lake in New Hampshire, where people gather to explore their creativity, healing and community. This place is called Squam. Behind this goodness is one remarkable woman by the name of Elizabeth Duvivier, someone who’s sought out to find her path and enlightenment in this creative world, bringing souls together and taking just as much away from each experience as those who attend. The FALL SQUAM RETREAT is taking place this September, complete with twinkle lights, generous teachers, sweet walks through the woods, vintage cottages, laughter on the dock, some very incredible workshops and ending with a Gather Here Bash pre-fair party and the SQUAM ART FAIR Saturday night. Join classes with incredible fiber folks like Maryanne Moodie, Anne Wood, Arne + Carlos, and Norah Gaughan – also on hand will be Jared Flood, Tif Fussell, Jaime + Amber of Fancy Tiger and so many other lovely spirits. There are still a few spots open so if this has been calling to you there is still time to register and make your travel plans to attend. Visit squamartworkshops.com for full details. In this episode, I'm chatting with Norah Gaughan who is perhaps best known for her book Knitting Nature and a nine year stint as Design Director at Berroco. Today, Norah works as an independent designer, with her current ventures including: being a member of the Brooklyn Tweed Design Team and designing a collection of pieces in collaboration with The Fibre Co. In my own knitting journey, I first stumbled across Norah in the book: Knitting in America. I so captivated by her story because it was at that time that I knew I wanted to embark on a career in the needle arts, and it's one of the earliest books I acquired on the subject of what it means to be a knitwear designer, and reading Norah's story set a fire inside of me, which is why I'm so honored to have Norah on Power Purls! This week's episode is plagued by sound issues (construction next door, and laptop fan going crazy). Apologies. Will continue to improve audio quality. The episode has a lot of segments, so let's get on with it! Off The Needles Caravan Scarf by Anne Hanson from her Bare Naked Knitspot club (February 2013). Used SOAK wool wash. What do you use for your knitted items? I've been wanting to try Eucalan since MamaOKnits interviewed Eucalan owner. Might knit Arden with the remaining yarn. Regina hat by Carina Spencer. Gifted to a friend's daughter. On The Needles Caravan Scarf Nespelem by Norah Gaughan. Still working on collars. Low Tide Cardigan by Tin Can Knits. Knitalong with Kim of Craft Stash. Yarn: Louet Merlin sport, US 3 (3.25 mm). First time knitting with linen! Hopefully my mods will work. Mentioned Laura of The Knit Girllls podcast's advice about shaping. Hankering to CO for a plain vanilla pattern. Recalculating Route
Listen here or subscribe on iTunes. I finally recorded and published my first trial podcast episode! I am loving Garage Band and its magic, and I thank Apple for making the software learning curve so much less steep by developing awesome user interface... I mentioned Paula of Knitting Pipeline Hopefully I can fill a niche of non-US non-British knitting podcast, I will talk about knitting and spinning stuff, about life in Indonesia, and random stuff that comes in my life. On The Needles Nespelem cardigan by Norah Gaughan, Berocco Pura Pima as suggested, US 5-3.75 mm Hiya Hiya Sharps interchangeable needles. Finished back and two fronts. Working on the collar, and still have one collar and two sleeves, AND seaming to go. A lot of ribbing and stockinette on the cardigan. Meant to be worn open. Love the yarn, but feeling the FO of a friend, very heavy. Damson by Ysolda Teague from Whimsical Little Knits 2. Three Irish Girls Kinsale Merino Tencel, colorway Serenity blue, a shipment of Sharon's Pick of The Knitter club, which is currently unavailable for new subscriptions. US 5 -3.75 mm Knit Picks nickel. Construction: garter tab, simple garter body, a stockinette edge and loops on the very edge. Working on the stockinette edge, seemingly endless. Thing about triangular shawl: easy breezy beginnings and a long slog in the end. Caravan Scarf by Anne Hanson, from Barenaked Knitspot club. First February shipment, Snow Leopard Trust handspun camel from Mongolia. 2 skeins of brown undyed Bactrian camel fiber (two-humped camel). First time ever knitting with handspun. Love the variety of texture in the yarn. Some (actually, a lot!) of vm (vegetable matters) in the yarn, but easily taken out. CO using US 4 -3.5mm, realized I was wrong about gauge. Went up to 6 halfway through the ribbing and switched to 7s for the body. going to be for dad. Hard to knit for guys especially those who live in a tropical climate like Indonesia. Off The Needles

This week's episode has been sponsored by: New in: Tanis Fiber Arts fingering weight and a pattern written specifically for it: the April Showers sock. Check out our weaving supplies! Administrative stuff: (00:39) Stitch It! has moved. Subscribe to the new feed in iTunes by clicking here. Cognitive's new feed page. BarknKnit's new feed page. (When you re-subscribe to these, please give them a new iTunes review.) On the Needles: (3:58) Gigi finished a pair of vanilla ribbed socks in the Kaffe Fasset Regia, a pair of vanilla Claudia's Handpaints Argyle. Gigi has also finished the first skein of yarn for her On the Vine scarf. Jasmin finished her pair of Ellen's Half-Pint Farm socks (out of the Merino/Tencel sock yarn) in the greens. Jasmin is "chain-knitting" her socks. She cast on the Creatively Dyed Calypso (80% Superwash Merino/20% Nylon) in the Jamaica colorway. The color reminds Jasmin of Lisa Souza's South Pacific colorway. Gigi is working on a former UFO - she is working on her white Einstein jacket again. Jasmin and Gigi discuss knitting with neutrals for "lasting" garments. (You can see the "Mimosa yellow" shawl here.) They discuss balancing fashion and timeliness with how long it will take to finish the project. Jasmin talks about Tim Gunn's 10 essential items list and how to encorporate that into your knitting. Jasmin and Gigi will be swatching this week! Gigi will be swatching some of the Tess Yarns' Silk and Merino (in charcoal grey) for a Cocoknits design. Jasmin has some of the same yarn, but in a pale blue from a few years ago. Jasmin is using it for the Cire-Perdue from the third Norah Gaughan book. Gigi brought over a children's loom so that Jasmin can determine whether or not she really, really wants to weave. CONTEST! Go into our Ravelry group and suggest show topics in the "What do you want to hear about?" thread. Mother Knows Best: (26:04) Gigi and Jasmin discuss matching yarns and patterns. Vanilla socks are a great way of testing new techniques (like the channel island cast-on). We also encourage you to treat your swatches the way you would treat the garment. When Knitting Attacks! (33:26) Gigi has been too efficient with her knitting, and ran out of on-the-go vanilla socks. Cat Bordhi is a genius, and Jasmin is not, and proves it while working on a pair of Coriolis socks. (The test drive pair is in Myra Hansen's Fancy Image Yarns sock yarn.) Jasmin notices the correlation between knitting attacks and the hours in which they happen. Also, her complete inability to do math into the late hours of the evening. Straw into Gold: (40:50) Jasmin is spinning 70% Alpaca/30% Silk roving from Abstract Fibers in a deep, rich blue/black colorway. Jasmin talks about showing surface area and shine while spinning, spinning posture, and is honest about how she feels about spinning cotton. Jasmin recommends taking a beginning spinning class from Sandi Luck (at Purlescence) if you're in the Bay Area, and any spinning class from Judith MacKenzie McCuin. (Next week, Jasmin will talk about cleaning spinning wheels.) Jasmin talks about spinning merino/silk batts from Crystal Creek Fibers for Gigi (pictured above). Jasmin talks about using a Fricke skeinwinder with a yardage counter. Jasmin also had spun up some of the Fat Cat Knits 50% SW Merino/50% tencel roving in Spring Bulbs. Jasmin also talks about winding up the Black Magic Woman that she had spun up and was still resting on the bobbins.
