Episode: 00293 Released on November 17, 2025 Description: In the fifth installment of Research Remix, Jason Elder and Jamie Roush unpack a 2014 study by Joel Kaplan, Philip Marotta, Eric Piza, and Leslie Kennedy examining whether the physical landscape contributes to felonious assaults and batteries against police officers. Using Chicago Police Department data, the researchers identified how risky facilities such as foreclosures, problem buildings, bars, schools, liquor stores, gang territories, and apartment complexes combine with environmental features like alleyways, poor lighting, and crowd density to elevate officer danger. Jamie explains why these spatial elements matter, how analysts can integrate non-traditional spatial data into proactive officer-safety work, and how dispatchers and CAD systems can benefit from enhanced risk-flagging. The conversation also highlights opportunities for analysts to expand their GIS layers, develop yearly governance on spatial data sources, and build prioritization models that identify the highest-risk locations and times of day. This episode is a practical roadmap for analysts aiming to support officer safety through environmental awareness, spatial modeling, and data-driven risk mitigation.

This review of Careless People by Facebook/Meta whistleblower, Sarah Wynn-Williams, covers Chapters 43-48, plus the Epilogue. The book's final pages bring to life the devastating reality of how "careless people" at the helm of an unchecked platform can negatively impact the entire world, leaving civil unrest, hate crimes, acts of terrorism, and even a genocide, in its wake. Multiple horrors seem to unfold in Sarah's final months of employment. She describes a rushed an incomplete investigation into the ongoing sexual harassment from her boss, Joel Kaplan, that clears him of any wrongdoing, learning about targeted advertising strategies aimed at teens in distress, and the terror of watching bigotry and misinformation take hold in Myanmar while being unable to stop it. Facebook a reacționat.

Zakladateľ, majoritný vlastník a výkonný riaditeľ spoločnosti META Mark Zuckerberg oznámil, že sociálne siete FACEBOOK a Instagram končia s cenzúrou. Prečo je to veľká správa a prečo väčšina slovenských a nielen slovenských médií z toho veľmi znervóznela? Oficiálne sa to volalo „overovanie faktov“, teda tzv. „Fact-checking“. Teraz to bude iné. Kto a PREČO?

BlackRock Cuts Back on Board Diversity Push in Proxy-Vote GuidelinesThe policy updates remove both (a) numerical diversity targets (i.e., boards should aspire to 30% diversity of membership and have at least 2 women directors and 1 director from an underrepresented group) and (b) the related disclosure-based voting policy (i.e., BlackRock previously would consider taking voting action if a company did not adequately explain its approach to board diversity) – but provides that BlackRock may consider taking voting action if an S&P 500 board is not sufficiently diverse (BlackRock includes a footnote in the policy update suggesting that 30% diversity may still be the expectation).BlackRock's investment stewardship team tweaked the language used to describe how it approaches votes for other companies' boards. It didn't explicitly recommend that boards should aspire to at least 30% diversity of their members, after having done so in previous years. The report noted, however, that all but 2% of the boards of companies in the S&P 500 have diverse representation of at least 30%—and that if companies were out of step with those norms, BlackRock may cast opposing votes on a case-by-case basis. The proponent's broader agenda is not reducing risk for the Company but abolition of diversity initiatives. A 2023 federal district court decision, in a case brought by the proponent, noted that the proponent had "published a document called 'Balancing the Boardroom 2022,' which describes its shareholder activism as 'fighting back' against 'the evils of woke politicized capital and companies.' [The proponent went] on to describe 'CEOs and other corporate executives who are most woke and most hard-left political in their management of their corporations' as 'inimical to the Republic and its blessings of liberty' and 'committed to critical race theory and the socialist foundations of woke' or 'shameless monsters who are willing to sacrifice our future for their comforts.'" National Center for Public Policy Research v. Schultz, E.D. WA. (Sept. 11, 2023). And the proponent's efforts to demonstrate retrenchment on the part of companies are misleading, at best. For example, the assertion that "Microsoft laid off an entirea[sic] DEI team" is simply wrong. It was later reported that Microsoft stated that the two positions eliminated were redundant roles on its events team and that Microsoft's diversity and inclusion commitments remain unchanged, according to Jeff Jones, a Microsoft spokesperson: “Our focus on diversity and inclusion is unwavering and we are holding firm on our expectations, prioritizing accountability, and continuing to focus on this work.” Colvin, Caroline. Amid DEI cuts, Microsoft works to distinguish itself from those responding to ‘woke' backlash. HR Dive, July 24, 2024.Reason Costco might be pushing back?Racism is basically unveiledOf all the companies targeted by a proposal or Robbie Starbuck, Costco has the lowest deviation in board member influence - as in, nearly the entire board has equal power, it's highly democratic - women, men, diverse cohorts are more or less equally powerful to anyone else in the roomNo connections to any board member on another DEI flipper companyMeanwhile, the anti DEI, anti immigrant movement has begun to eat itself before Trump even takes officeIn defense of more HB1 visas and foreign workers, Vivek Ramaswamy says we venerate jocks over valedictorians on Twitter, and Americans aren't as good employeesThe rebuttal was MAGA Trumpers saying Vivek is fake MAGAAlso this: “His entire argument is a terrible proposition,” he adds. “Children raised to be good little robots might grow up to build robots of their own someday, and become rich. Asians are the highest-earning racial group in America, but are they happier for it? Suicide is the leading cause of death for Asians aged 15-24 … and the second-leading cause of death for those aged 25-34.” Page points to a Psychology Today post that blames tiger parenting for causing anxiety and depression and then asks, “Do we really want this country to be even more stressed-out?”Costco proxy says Asians are discriminated againstTwitch gamers are streaming about “meritocracy”

Vance in december. Journalists critical of their own companies cause headaches for news organizations

This spring, NBC News, The New York Times, and National Public Radio (NPR) have each dealt with turmoil for essentially the same reason: journalists taking the critical gaze they deploy to cover the world and turning it inward at their own employers. Journalism as a profession attracts people who are anti-authoritarian, and who see themselves as truth-tellers. Many believe the way to make an organization better is by criticizing it, said Tom Rosenstiel, co-author of “The Elements of Journalism” and a professor at the University of Maryland. NPR editor Uri Berliner didn't receive much internal support for his complaints, but that actually reinforced his point. He said NPR had become too one-sided in promoting a liberal point of view, and that he went public with an essay in another news outlet when his concerns went unanswered by his superiors. NPR management says he is wrong. But Berliner quickly became a hero among conservatives who held the same belief. There are several reasons why many journalists are more apt now to go public with complaints they may once have kept sharing with colleagues down at the corner bar. Among them is the likelihood that their outlet is owned by a faraway hedge fund instead of a local family, said Joel Kaplan, associate dean for graduate studies at Syracuse University's Newhouse communications school and a former Chicago Tribune reporter. A generational change also has emboldened many young journalists. In his own classroom, Kaplan sees more young journalists questioning traditional notions of objectivity that keep them from expressing opinions. Many believe they have the right to state their beliefs and support causes, he said. “Now you have journalists that are advocates,” Rosenstiel said. “That reflects something of a culture war that is happening inside of journalism.” Some traditionalists, like former Washington Post editor Marty Baron, have despaired over some of these changes. Battles with young staff members over how they express their opinions over social media left him despondent, a factor in his eventual retirement. “Never have I felt more distant from my fellow journalists,” he wrote about a staff meeting on the topic in his 2023 book “Collision of Power.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Joel Kaplan and Shaya Levin are two extraordinary individuals living in New York. Their children were engaged to be married to one another when horrific tragedy struck.   Five years ago, Yisroel Levin and his Kallah, Elisheva Kaplan, two incredibly inspiring and growing people, were killed in a horrible car accident on Chol Hamoed Pesach. The tragedy shook the Jewish people. At their funeral, Shaya, Yisroel's father, asked that in exchange for their pure souls, we together help suggest and facilitate 10,000 shidduchim in honor of Yisroel and Elisheva, and the initiative has since led to countless shidduchim.    Joel and Shaya's pain, resilience, and insight and the legacy of Yisroel and Elisheva continue to inspire and uplift thousands worldwide. ____________________________________ ► Alpert & Associates  Need Financial Planning and Life insurance? New York journalist Pete Hamill passed away this month after a stellar career as a columnist, essayist, and author. He and Jimmy Breslin inspired a generation of newspaper reporters, including our guest Brian O'Neill, a columnist in Pittsburgh for the last 30-some years. We talk about Pete's interest in people, how his writing revealed New York, and why his writing is so relevant and timeless. We also read from his columns about Trump in the 80s and the assassination of Bobby Kennedy when Pete was in the galley kitchen where Bobby was shot. We also discuss newspapers as the "rough draft of history" and their importance today. **This podcast is GUARANTEED to be pretty much pandemic conversation free ** If you're tired of podcasts that only seem to talk about Covid-19 and you'd much rather listen to how one of the craziest advertising ideas of all-time was made - today is your lucky day. In this episode, Jordan sits with Joel Kaplan who was one of the original creators of Burger King's infamous 2009 Titanium Lion winning idea: The Whopper Sacrifice. Easily one of the shortest and most viral campaigns of all-time, Whopper Sacrifice was only live for just over a week before it had to be taken down, causing another insane round of free PR. In the first half, Joel details how the idea was built on a simple insight about what 'a friend' really is, how the idea was thought to be dead, and how one crazy app caused Facebook to congratulate CP+B for "officially breaking the platform." In the second half, they dive into Joel's nebulous creative process, his love of strategy, and how he always makes sure to turn things upside down while concepting. From his earlier days back at AKQA where he took home hardware for launching Halo, through his insane years at Crispin, and into his current position as ECD at Muh-Tay-Zik/Hof-fer in San Fransisco, Joel drops a ton of hints and tips that every junior copywriter needs to listen to.
