In this episode, I explore a topic that resonates with many: the prison of our thoughts. Reflecting on my experiences, I aim to create a space for authenticity and vulnerability, sharing insights to help listeners navigate their mental landscapes. I begin by acknowledging the overwhelming nature of our thoughts and how they can sometimes feel like a cage, trapping us in limiting beliefs and fears. I encourage listeners to recognize that these thoughts do not define them; they are merely thoughts that can be changed. By understanding that we are not our thoughts, we can break down the mental barriers we've unconsciously built over time. After a summer of record heat waves, I'm sure we're all grateful for air conditioning. And we know, it's not just about comfort or productivity, but with extreme heat, being able to cool buildings keeps people safe. Yet, it comes at a cost: air conditioning today is responsible for about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions and demand is set to triple by 2050.Maybe you're thinking that heat pumps are the answer and will come to the rescue? They're certainly an important part of the solution, but until electric heat pumps are plugged into a grid that is fully powered by clean energy, efficiency matters a great deal. Enter Mojave HVAC. Their liquid desiccant technology can cut the energy needed for cooling commercial spaces by 30-50%. For today's conversation, I'm joined by Mojave Founder & CEO Phil Farese. We spoke about Phil's past and how he learned about the economics of energy efficiency, Mojave's business model, technology, and its potential role in keeping us cool without overheating the planet. Here we go. In today's episode, we cover:[03:01] Phil's background & what led him to founding Mojave HVAC[05:07] Mojave & the problem that they're solving[07:24] The limitations of heat pumps [10:36] Focusing on efficiency & using less energy for our HVAC needs[13:53] How Mojave's technology was developed & where the business is at [16:04] Mohave's target market & how sales are progressing [17:21] Other insights on Mohave's product [18:21] The overall opportunity for business & impact[19:42] Emissions savings through technology adoption[20:25] Drivers of demand for Mohave's product[22:26] The pros & cons of the liquid desiccants debate[25:37] Mohave's next milestone & the biggest challenges[26:41] Blind spots in addressing climate change & buildings[29:27] Today's climate innovation ecosystem & how it needs to improveResources MentionedMojave HVACConnect with Phil FareseConnect with Phil on LinkedInConnect with Jason RissmanOn LinkedInOn TwitterKeep up with Invested In ClimateSign up for our NewsletterLinkedInInstagramTwitterHave feedback or ideas for future episodes, events, or partnerships?Get in touch!
In this episode, our hosts discuss: Recyclable Wind Turbine Blades: Researchers at NREL are developing wind turbine blades using a new material known as PECAN (PolyEster Covalently Adaptable Network) resin. This bioderivable resin allows the blades to be chemically recycled and remanufactured multiple times, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional wind blades that often end up in landfills after their 20-year lifespan. Cybersecurity in Critical Infrastructure: As the world becomes increasingly dependent on digital technologies, cyberattacks against utilities are on the rise. NREL is addressing the cybersecurity workforce gap by integrating cybersecurity as a core engineering skill instead of just an add-on. This approach, known as cyber-informed engineering, is being promoted through the development of educational tools and direct training. U.S. Navy Improves Energy Efficiency: The U.S. Navy's infrastructure includes over 500,000 buildings. The use of NREL's Standard Energy Efficiency Data (SEED) platform and the Navy Smart Grid system is providing better insights into building performance and prioritizing energy-saving upgrades. This episode was hosted by Kerrin Jeromin and Taylor Mankle, written and produced by Allison Montroy and Kaitlyn Stottler, and edited by Joe DelNero and Brittany Falch. The Small Business Association of Michigan’s Small Business Weekly Podcast
On today's SBAM Weekly Podcast, Michael Rogers talks with Scott Ringlein, founder of the Energy Alliance Group of North America, a family of for-profit and nonprofit companies that share a common goal and expertise to develop innovative solutions to energy waste and environmental challenges. “We help business building owners, including those in Michigan, find ways to become more energy efficient, reduce their utility cost, improve cash flow both short term and long term, and then have an option to give back to others in the same community that they're located in,” he says. The Small Business Association of Michigan is the only statewide and state-based association that focuses solely on serving the needs of Michigan's small business community. We have been successfully serving small businesses like yours in all 83 counties of Michigan since 1969. We're located in Lansing, just one block from the Capitol. Our mission is to help Michigan small businesses succeed by promoting entrepreneurship, leveraging buying power and engaging in political advocacy. When small businesses band together through the Small Business Association of Michigan, they achieve more than they could on their own. Our 32,000 members are as diverse as Michigan's economy. From accountants to appliance stores, manufacturers to medical, and restaurants to retailers, what unites the SBAM membership is the spirit of entrepreneurship…a spirit that drove you to start and continue to operate your own business because you believe you can do something better than anyone else is doing it! Humans may have been able to create technology to realize their age-old dream of flying long ago. But there is still a lot to learn from the avian masters of the skies. At a university in the Netherlands, researchers are exploring ways for drones to mimic how birds "hover" in the wind to reduce the energy needed to stay aloft. It might look unassuming, like a basic small model plane. But the drone hovering in the wind tunnel at Delft University in the Netherlands is mimicking energy-saving behavior that can be observed in birds when they soar using thermals which are warm currents of air. “We tried to mimic the birds' flight behavior,” explains Sunyou Hwang, a Ph.D. student leading the project. “For example, kestrels do so-called wind hovering when they are hunting, so they stay in the air without flapping their wings. Then they don't use that much energy because they don't flap their wings.” But while birds have an intuitive understanding of the wind, "teaching" a drone to simulate this skill is less straightforward. The researchers could also program the drone to autonomously find a new soaring spot when the wind field changes during the flight. “We didn't use prior knowledge of the wind field, so this MAV (Micro Air Vehicle) didn't know what kind of wind field we have, and it has to find that feasible position by itself,” says Sunyou Hwang. Bart Remes, who collaborates on the research and mentors Hwang's Ph.D. work, says that observing birds' behavior meant that "we know that it is possible" – but that prior to the experiments they did not know how great the efficiency savings might be or what the optimal position was. And while the researchers focus on “fundamental research, so we don't know what the application will be," Remes says the knowledge gained could be useful for a range of projects and applications in the future. Their work has yet to be peer-reviewed and the team is just one group of researchers looking to the natural world to improve man-made aircraft. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

We all want to save money, and with the cost of living on the rise in the UK, it's become more important than ever to watch what we spend. The biggest increase in our expenditure at the moment is on energy – the oil, gas and electricity we use to power and heat our homes. That's why many of us are looking at ways to save energy so we don't have to shell out on huge fuel bills. Making our home more energy efficient is the obvious way to save money. To try to achieve this, new homes in the UK will be banned from installing new gas and oil boilers by 2025. Having a heat pump instead can help save energy, but they're unaffordable for many people, unless they've got spare cash stashed away. If your home feels like a money pit, there are some low-budget solutions you can turn to to lower your energy usage. Warm air escapes our homes easily, so adding draught excluders or a rolled-up towel to block these gaps will help. Investing in new double glazing will certainly insulate your home better, but if it is too costly, it might be worth using some heavy curtains to stop the heat escaping. Switching off lights is also a good idea. But there are lots of other little things we can do around the home that will help save energy, don't cost a fortune and that just require tweaks to our behaviour. They could be as good as installing, fitting or making anything. Put lids on pots and pans when cooking – the food will be ready quicker. Use a microwave to reheat food rather than the oven. Don't overfill your kettle when boiling water, and don't leave electrical items on standby. Jo Patterson from Cardiff University's Welsh School of Architecture told the BBC that a combination of small measures like these could reduce household energy bills by about 10%. So, we're being encouraged to be more fuel efficient. But our main aim isn't just financial – we need to do it to reduce our carbon footprint, so that our energy usage doesn't cost the Earth. 词汇表save 节省,节约cost of living 生活费用spend 花(钱)expenditure 支出shell out (通常指不情愿地)支付(一大笔钱)bill 账单unaffordable 支付不起的stash 藏匿,存放money pit 大钱坑,需要不断投钱的无底洞low-budget 低成本的invest 投资(购买)costly 昂贵的cost a fortune 极其昂贵,花大价钱tweak 稍作调整,稍稍改进measure 方法reduce 降低,减少financial 经济上的cost the Earth 让地球付出代价 (cost the earth 的原意是 “花费一大笔钱”)

Simple Solutions Quick and Easy Grout Cleaner — There are plenty of specialty products on the market that are specifically made for cleaning dirty, grungy tile grout. But you might just have something in your home right now that works just as well: toilet bowl cleaner. That's right — the same squeeze bottle of cleanser used to clean toilets does an excellent job of cleaning tile grout. Just squirt a bead of liquid toilet bowl cleaner along the grout joint, wait a few minutes and then wipe off with a scouring sponge. Wall Protector — When prying off baseboard molding, it's often necessary to pry against the wall. However, if you're not careful, it's very easy for the pry bar will dent or bust through the drywall. Prevent this by placing a 1-by-4, 1-by-6 or even a 2-by-4 between the pry bar and wall. And be sure to cut the board about 24 inches long so it spans two studs. The board will not only protect the wall, but it'll also act as a fulcrum, making it easier to pry off the molding. Other Products and Links Mentioned Quikrete Stucco Repair Sealant

Quantum Quote: “We really can't sit idly by. We've got to make the decisions. We've got to get things to change fast.” – Pete Skinner Hot water costs can be up to 18% or 20% or more of a family's home energy bill, and it can be an even larger percentage in a multi-family building. If you're a developer of multifamily buildings, you strive to balance the first capital costs of construction, with on-going energy and maintenance costs - all while not compromising comfort for your tenants. Studies conducted in the last several years have found that we don't use as much hot water as previously believed, and that simultaneous peak hot water consumption isn't as high as estimated either. In most larger multifamily buildings, designers use three-inch diameter pipes that are costly to install and waste large amounts of energy. Sustainable “Net Zero” buildings - such as the Net Zero Village http://www.netzerovillage.com/ and the Solara Luxury Apartments Solara https://www.solaraluxuryapartments.com/ - in Rotterdam, NY - have discovered that delivering hot water in a way that is fast and cost-effective - while saving a lot of energy in the process - is now possible! Through Practically Perfect Plumbing (PPP), we can both save Earth while enjoying the pleasure of immediate hot water. Check out this week's AWESome EarthKind Energy podcast where we interview Pete Skinner, an Engineer who is dedicated to helping sustain the Earth with solar hot water, heat pumps - and smaller “smart” pipes. Pete Skinner is a Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Engineer who worked for 32 years as the Chief Scientist to the NY State Attorney General. Pete first worked for Louis J. Lefkowitz in the state's first environmental advocacy office. Pete led the NYAG's technical team on pollution and power plant issues, and sued the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on climate change, which led to the conclusion that carbon dioxide is the Earth's most concerning pollutant. Pete has been interested in electricity and water processes since he was a kid. By doing things by himself, he was able to differentiate what works and what doesn't. This basically drove the passion he has now as he aims to reduce capital and energy costs in building new, high-performance net zero buildings. It is so important that we use these kinds of mechanisms to get the word out on important changes that are taking place, because our Earth is the only planet we have. If we don't start addressing the energy issues that are driving this climate change really quickly and in a very deep way –– we're not going to have a planet left. It's all going to look like Mars. SuperNova #2. The smaller the pipe, the less energy is being wasted. Practically Perfect Plumbing is a new way to get water to tenants that saves energy, saves money, saves water, and gets your tenants happier faster. SuperNova #3. Most Energized About Today: “I'm energized today because I'm going to be meeting with my client, Dave, and selling him a heat pump hot water heater hybrid system for his new clubhouse – eight apartments with two bedrooms and two bathrooms – and his own apartment with a large jacuzzi tub.” – Pete Skinner Parting Advice: “Don't be afraid to do it yourself. In a cold climate, heat is almost 2/3 of home energy use. Rocket mass heaters are super efficient wood-fired heaters that are pretty much smokeless and use one tenth of the wood of a conventional wood stove. They can be built for as little as a few hundred dollars and a weekend's worth of time. Using sustainably harvested wood as fuel, or even junk mail, the burn on a well-built rocket mass heater is so clean that installing one could potentially cut 27 tons off your carbon footprint and save many hundreds of dollars per year!buildingabetterworldbook.com
Most of us heat our homes by heating all of the air in the whole house and then blowing it around in the hopes that it will eventually heat some people. Why not just heat the people instead?By focusing on heating the person instead of heating the space, it is possible to save up to 90% of the money you spend on heat! In a cold climate this can be hundreds of dollars per year! Each person will have their own comfort level with these techniques. Maybe some will actually save 90% while others will only save 50%. Still, 50% is a big deal! That could reduce your carbon footprint by many tons! For more about Building a Better World in Your Backyard - Instead of Being Angry at Bad Guys, visit buildingabetterworldbook.com.
