This rock, filled with unique chemical signatures, raises questions about the possibility of ancient microbial life on Mars. The analysis reveals organic compounds and distinctive structures, prompting further investigation to determine their origins and implications for past life on the Red Planet.Strange Stellar FamilyIn an unexpected discovery, astronomers have identified a cluster of over a thousand young stars, named Ophion, that are behaving in a chaotic manner, rapidly dispersing instead of forming stable groups. This unusual behavior challenges existing theories about star formation and raises questions about the influences of nearby massive stellar groups and past supernovae on their movement.Artemis 2 Orion Capsule DeliveredThe Orion capsule designated for NASA's Artemis 2 mission has officially been handed over to NASA after final assembly and testing. The last full week of 2024 is here! Ophi gives tips for how to navigate the holidays. And it's not a "silent night" in the stars with a Jupiter-Saturn square and cosmic clashes between several planets all week long. This is the second time in 2024 (the first was on August 19) that expansive Jupiter has faced off against restrictive Saturn, which will require us to navigate some suppressed emotions and potentially tactless comments. The week ends with a Venus-Uranus square that could throw love a curveball and Chiron ending its retrograde, which could give way to healing conversations right before the December 30 Capricorn new moon.
On this week's episode, Ophi talks about:How to navigate the last week of Mercury retrograde (ends 12/15)The Gemini full moonThe intense themes of war and peace this week, including the Venus-Mars oppositionWe also get into the global issues that Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius has stirred up, including the oust of Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad at the exact moment of his Saturn return.LINKS MENTIONED:

For example, did you pump/What was your feeding journey all about? What propelled you to create OMM The Label- we have mentioned a bit in our intro but we would love to delve deeper with you on this?Your waffle lounge set in green is seriously lush and if I had breastfed for longer than I did due to unforeseen circumstances, I would have lived in that- do you have a fav product that you are most proud of out of everything you have ever created? What does the idea of ‘success' mean to you and a mum and business ownerWe love your quote- "I believe that motherhood and the achievement of breastfeeding is something to celebrate and be proud of - I hate the idea of mums feeling ashamed or uncomfortable about breastfeeding - but unfortunately it's a reality for some of us and that NEEDS TO CHANGE!" - can you talk about this? What have been the biggest challenges in the juggle that is Motherhood and running your business? Then, on the flip side, what have been the most beautiful aspects? What do you do for you in all of the chaos? What was the last book you read or podcast that you listened to? Interviews with pioneers in business and social impact - Business Fights Poverty Spotlight
This podcast goes to the very roots and heart of Business Fights Poverty – we are going to deeply examine poverty. What it is, where it occurs, to whom, why and what we can do about it. Global exert and leading thinker Sabina Alkire who directs the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) at the University of Oxford - shares her lifelong research into poverty. During our conversation Sabina explains how measuring multidimensional poverty can incorporate different dimensions, or aspects of poverty, to create measures tailored to each context. With colleagues at OPHI this has been applied and implemented empirically to produce a Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI). Sabina shares how the world has experienced poverty over the past years, where this is changing, including some rays of hope that we can build from. In addition Sabina shares deeply practical ways to use this data and successfully address poverty. Emily Henke is the executive director of the organization. She joins us to tell us more about this program and how it fits into OPHI's overall focus on health equity.

Link: https://slatestarcodex.com/2019/10/23/indian-economic-reform-much-more-than-you-wanted-to-know/ From a recent Charter Cities Institute report: From India’s independence from the British Raj in 1947 to the early 1990s, the country’s economic policy was largely socialist. In the 1980s some early steps were taken to open the Indian economy to increased trade, reduce controls over industry, and set a more realistic exchange rate. In 1991, more widespread economic reforms were introduced. These reforms included the end of government monopolies over certain sectors of the economy, reductions in barriers to entry for new firms, increased foreign investment was allowed, and tariffs and other barriers to trade were reduced or eliminated. After liberalization, exports increased substantially, and various service sector industries saw significant growth. India’s growth has not just been good for the more educated segment of the population. Datt, Ravallion, and Murgai (2016) argue that India has made substantial progress in reducing the incidence of absolute poverty, and that this trend exists in both urban and rural areas. Historically higher rates of rural poverty have been converging with urban rates of poverty, and the overall poverty rate has been declining at an accelerating rate in the post-1991 reform era. In the 1970s over 60 percent of Indians were living in extreme poverty. As of 2011, only 20 percent of the population lived in extreme poverty. Between 2005 and 2016, an estimated 271 million Indians rose out of multidimensional poverty, which accounts for various health, education, and living standard indicators rather than just income (UNDP and OPHI 2018). Infant mortality has fallen from 161.4 deaths per 1,000 births in 1960 to just 32 deaths per 1,000 births in 2017, and India should soon converge with the world average if the current trend continues. Life expectancy has also improved dramatically, rising from 41 years in 1960 to nearly 69 years today.

Ophira Edut is one half of The Astro Twins, a generation-defining pair of astrologers that have made the complex world of astrology accessible to millions. Ophi has been reading charts with her identical twin sister Tali for more than two decades, revealing the secrets of the zodiac to A-listers like Beyoncé, Stevie Wonder, Sting, and even Gloria Steinem. The twins’ astrological adventure all started when they were in NYC running their own alternative online magazine for women of all shapes, sizes, races, and sexualities. Publishing this ‘90’s-era Lenny Letter of sorts led them to start writing regular horoscopes, introducing them to the world of astrology that they love. Now the twins are undeniably a driving force in the astrological community, writing for dozens of major publications, launching a class on mindbodygreen.com, and most recently publishing their new book, “How To Get Along With Anyone: The AstroTwins’ Compatibility Book.” And with the recent surge of interest in astrology (which the twins obviously saw coming thanks to the stars), it’s clear that these gifted intuitives have more insight to share with us than ever. In this episode, we’re getting the scoop on all of those astrological phenomena that you need to know about—like what it really means when a planet goes retrograde and how to handle it (hello Mercury, we’re looking at you). Ophi also shares her insight on what to do if you’re in a relationship that’s astrologically incompatible, the best rituals to do under a full moon, and the real reason Hillary Clinton lost the election. Dr. Sabina Alkire provides a brief overview of OPHI's work on multidimensional poverty and the missing dimensions of poverty.
Dr Sabina Alkire, Director of the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) gives a talk for the Oxford Alumni Weekend 2013. What does 'being poor' really mean? The Global Multidimensional Poverty Index, or MPI, is an international measure of acute poverty covering more than 100 developing countries. Assessing poverty at the individual level, it complements traditional income-based poverty measures by capturing the severe deprivations that each person faces at the same time with regard to education, health and living standards. It also reveals how poverty is falling: whether there is a smaller number of people experiencing poverty, or whether the share of deprivations faced by poor people has dropped. Join Sabina Alkire to hear how the method that underlies the index, developed at Oxford University, is being applied by governments.
