In the days after the November 2022 murders of University of Idaho students Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin, investigators were examining a series of phone calls made by Goncalves and Mogen shortly before they were killed. The two women had repeatedly called a man named Jack, later identified as Goncalves' former boyfriend, Jack DuCoeur, with roughly 10 calls placed between the two phones during the early-morning hours. The calls quickly attracted public attention because they occurred so close to the estimated time of the murders, but Goncalves' family strongly defended DuCoeur and said they did not believe he had anything to do with the killings. They explained that Goncalves and DuCoeur had remained close despite recently ending their long-term relationship and said the calls were not unusual in the context of their relationship.At that stage of the investigation, authorities had not identified a suspect, recovered the murder weapon or publicly explained exactly what had happened inside the King Road house, leaving a vacuum that was rapidly filled by speculation. Police said they were aware of the calls and were looking into everyone connected to the victims, but they ultimately said they did not believe DuCoeur was involved. The intense focus on him illustrated how quickly friends, acquaintances and former partners of the victims became subjects of public suspicion while investigators were still working through evidence and interviews. In a sprawling prison in the Asir province of Southwestern Saudi Arabia, hundreds of young Ethiopian men are currently sitting on death row, not knowing when their name might be called and to be told that it's their turn. In the hope of getting their voices heard some of the prisoners managed to get hold of the phone number for the BBC's Tigrinya language service. One of the journalists working for the service is Aklilu Tsegay and he tells us what it was like to speak to those prisoners, sometimes multiple times a day, when reporting on the story.In India, July saw some of the biggest protests in the country for many years. The protesters were young people, particularly students, and they came together under an unusual symbol, the cockroach. They call themselves the Cockroach Janta Party or CJP, and they are demanding change to the education system in the country. Lindsay Clancy called a suicide hotline twice before her three children died. The psychiatrist treating her at the time had no idea. That psychiatrist, Dr. Jennifer Tufts, took the witness stand this week as a prosecution witness at Plymouth Superior Court — and defense attorney Kevin Reddington spent three hours pulling her treatment decisions apart.Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months. The defense argues she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and was overmedicated by the providers now testifying against her.Tufts treated Lindsay for four months through telehealth. She never met her patient in person. She did not request records from another clinic. When Reddington confronted her with her own medical notes, she told the courtroom her written documentation did not reflect what she meant.Criminal defense trial attorney Bob Motta of Defense Diaries has been in the courtroom watching the prosecution's witness parade all week. The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023, moved through two consequential witnesses today. Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation, has pleaded not guilty, and is mounting an insanity defense built around severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication, led by attorney Kevin Reddington.First up: Trooper Dan Lawlor, who was providing security at the hospital. On cross-examination, he testified he saw a doctor go in to consult with Clancy, and later found out that doctor had handed her his own phone to call her husband, Patrick. Lawlor also testified that he and the lead investigator discussed the possibility that a psychiatrist coached Clancy to say she was hearing voices. On re-direct, he said a separate conversation with another trooper didn't shift his testimony.Next, Latisha Dukes, a counselor and psychologist at South Shore Hospital, testified she began treating Clancy in late November 2022 for depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and a stated wish not to be here anymore. A six-billion-dollar brand got breached this week, and the attackers never wrote a line of code. They called three employees and pretended to be IT. Every business owner should sit with this: the same phone call works even better on a company your size. *Every breach is won or lost before it begins.* Bryan Hornung, Randy Bryan, and Reginald Andre break down this week's stories for executives, owners, and operators who do not have time to keep up with cyber news but cannot afford to be blindsided. The good news first. The City of Coweta, Oklahoma, a town of about ten thousand people, got hit with a ransomware attack that locked up every computer in City Hall. Permits, transactions, and in-person card payments stopped cold. But 911 never went down because police and fire systems run on separate off-site servers the attack could not reach. Coweta is refusing to pay the ransom for one reason: its backups actually work. That is the whole lesson in one town. Levi Strauss told the SEC that attackers stole corporate data after socially engineering just three employees. No malware. No exploit. Someone called pretending to be the internal help desk, led employees to a fake login page, and captured their passwords and live sessions in real time. Then they registered their own login devices, removed the real ones, and deleted security alerts so nobody got a warning. Google's threat team says the crew behind this style of attack built tools to hit more than two hundred companies in about five weeks. If they will call Levi's, they will call your front desk. LockBit is back. Law enforcement broke up the ransomware crew in 2024, but its 5.0 version has already listed more than two hundred victims. The latest is Microphase, a Connecticut company that has made radio and radar parts for the defense world since 1955. This is double extortion: they steal your data first, then threaten to publish it unless you pay. Backups alone will not save you. If they will hit a specialty parts shop, "we're too small to be a target" is not a plan. Three stories, one thread. Coweta survived because of decisions made long before the attack. Levi's got hurt in a single moment of misplaced trust. LockBit proves attackers are coming whether you are a household name or a shop nobody has heard of. The outcome was decided long before the attack. Ask most people what a brain chip does and they will tell you it reads your mind. Dr. Michael Lawton implants these devices, and he says that is not what comes off them. He is President and CEO of Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, the hospital where Neuralink's first human implant was performed, and he has completed more than 10,000 brain operations and clipped around 5,500 aneurysms. Louisa sat down with him inside Barrow to find out what the electrodes actually pick up, how far the technology has come, and where it stops. He walks through the surgery itself. The device goes into the hand knob, one small lobule of the motor cortex, where 64 electrodes have already become 108. The threads carrying them are about a tenth the thickness of a hair, so a robot inserts them while avoiding every arteriole on the surface. You'll hear what Nolan Arbaugh, Neuralink's first patient, can now do with a cursor at world record speed, and why Lawton can't keep up with him in a head to head. Then the correction. The data coming off these electrodes is a train of spikes, the same electrical language every neuron in your head is already using, and decoding it tells you whether a person meant to move a cursor left or right. Reading an emotion, or what someone thinks of you, is nowhere close. The second half turns to the brain Lawton has spent 29 years operating inside. He describes cooling a patient to 15 degrees Celsius and stopping their circulation completely, which shrivels a giant aneurysm like a raisin and opens a short window to repair it. He explains why the hardest cases will still need a pair of human hands, and what he tells trainees who think their craft is disappearing. On brain aging he is direct about what works. He predicts alcohol will be viewed in 20 years the way cigarettes were viewed in the 60s, he takes zero supplements and no peptides, and he says exactly what he can and cannot see when he looks at a living brain on the table.
