Gratitude is rarely our first instinct when we’re hurting. In today's prayer and devotional, seasons of loss, grief, or overwhelming uncertainty often make thankfulness feel impossible. Keri Eichberger shares the story of her miscarriage nearly 20 years ago—a season filled with deep pain, grief, and a desperate attempt to regain control. Looking back, she realizes how little gratitude she expressed during that time and how much peace she forfeited by striving instead of surrendering. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us that the pathway to peace is not simply prayer, but prayer with thanksgiving. Gratitude in trials isn’t pretending things aren’t painful; it’s acknowledging God’s presence, goodness, and care—right in the middle of our suffering. Thanksgiving guards our hearts and minds, creating space for the supernatural peace we long for but cannot manufacture on our own. When we thank God—even through tears—we declare by faith that He is working, that He has purpose in our pain, and that His goodness will follow us all the days of our lives. Gratitude doesn’t erase grief, but it anchors us in the truth that God is with us, carrying us, strengthening us, and offering peace the world cannot give. Read OnlineAs Jesus approached Jericho a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging, and hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what was happening. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” He shouted, “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!” The people walking in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent, but he kept calling out all the more, “Son of David, have pity on me!” Luke 18:35–39This beautiful story of the healing of this blind man, named Bartimaeus in the Gospel of Luke, sets for us a model of how we must come to Jesus in prayer. Bartimaeus and his encounter with Christ is an icon upon which we must meditate so as to imitate him in his weakness, openness, confidence and perseverance.To begin, this “blind man was sitting by the roadside begging.” We must see this as an ideal image of how to begin our prayer. When we start to pray, we must see our littleness, weakness and extreme poverty in our spiritual life. We come to God with nothing. Unable to see. A beggar. And one who is incapable of meeting our own spiritual needs. This is Bartimaeus, and this must be the way we come to our Lord in prayer. Sometimes we can fall into the illusion that our prayers are so elevated and pious that God must be very impressed. If that's your struggle, then you are more like the Pharisees. This blind man, however, is the ideal to aim for. So when you begin your prayer, come to our Lord as a spiritually poor and needy beggar.In this state of humility, just as it happened in this Gospel story, you can be certain that “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” So as you sit in your humble and needy state, wait and be attentive to Jesus passing by. Wait upon His gentle voice, His quiet inspiration, His calming and unmistakable presence. If you can humble yourself this way and then sense our Lord's divine presence touching you in some way, then further imitate Bartimaeus by calling out interiorly, “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!” The cry from the depths of your heart in prayer must come as a result of Jesus “passing by.” It must be a response to Him coming to you on His own. As Jesus passes by, spiritually speaking, He waits for you to call to Him. He desires that you call to Him. And He desires that you do it with firm confidence and perseverance.Notice that as this blind beggar cried out, there were obstacles put in his way. The people “rebuked him, telling him to be silent.” But even this was a gift, because it enabled Bartimaeus to cry out all the more. So also with us, when obstacles arise in our prayer, such as distractions, temptations, a lack of consolation, or any other challenge to our prayer, we must see these obstacles as hurdles that must be overcome. Doing so will deepen our union with Jesus, turning that apparent obstacle into a source of blessing. Reflect, today, upon these four aspects of a deep prayer life that are presented to us through the witness of this blind beggar. First, ponder your weakness and poverty as you turn to God in prayer. Second, be attentive to the presence of God as He passes by, waiting for you to call to Him. Third, cry out to Him and beg Him to come closer. And fourth, work to overcome every obstacle to prayer and see those obstacles as opportunities to call out to God all the more. My compassionate Lord, I come to You in my weakness and poverty, I come in need of Your divine touch and healing. As You do pass by, I acknowledge Your presence and call to You. Jesus, please do come to me, have pity on me. Help me to overcome every obstacle to Your love and to trust in You always, never wavering from my commitment to You. Jesus, I trust in You. 820 And An Angel of the Lord Appeared to Them, A Guided Christian Meditation on Luke 2:7-9 with the Recenter With Christ app The purpose of this podcast is to help you find more peace in and connect with the true source of peace, Jesus Christ. Guided Relaxation / Guided Meditation: Breathe and direct your thoughts to connecting with God. Let your stomach be a balloon inflate, deflate. Scripture for Meditation Luke 2 NIV 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. NASB 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock at night.9 And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood near them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. Reflection on Scripture: God does not need your validation. He doesn't need human clout. The Son of God was laid in a food box for animals instead of a bassinet or crib. Jesus did not use his influence to avoid personal hardship. God doesn't need human legitimacy. He didn't send his son to a golden throne but was born during a tax audit during a time of subjugation of Gods people. Then instead of sending word to the kings and emperors of the world he shared the news with humble shepherds. He didn't need the approval of nations and people. He had angels to declare the glorious message. I don't think we recognize this in our lives. God doesn't need the approval of the world. He doesn't need to convince the world. He rules the heavens and has power to crush or burn the earth. He chooses to allow us to know about plans. He uses whatever means he chooses. The same applies to your life. He doesn't need our validation. He doesn't need your effort but rather we should glorify God because he is worthy of it. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Meditation of God and His Glory / Hesychasm: I invite you to sit in silence feeling patient for your own faults and trials. Some days the weight of the world feels unbearable. In our daily prayer and devotional, we reflect on the fact that news headlines, personal stories, or even a single conversation can open our eyes to suffering so deep that it feels paralyzing. For Sophia Bricker, reading a student’s research paper on women in refugee camps brought her face-to-face with heartbreaking realities—women fleeing violence, grieving losses, and enduring ongoing trauma. She sat stunned, wondering how the world could stay so still when so much was broken. Scripture reminds us that believers have felt this kind of anguish before. Jeremiah—the “weeping prophet”—saw devastation firsthand as Jerusalem fell in ruins. Lamentations is filled with his raw grief, yet even in the midst of sorrow, he anchored his soul in hope. He remembered God’s steadfast love and compassion, the only reason His people were not consumed. That same hope is ours today. While the suffering around us may feel overwhelming, God sees it all. He grieves with us. And He has already provided the ultimate answer to the world’s pain—Jesus Christ, who conquered sin and death, and who will one day wipe away every tear. Even when we don’t know how to help or what to do, we can pray. We can lament. And we can ask God to show us where He is already at work so we can participate in bringing His love, justice, and compassion into dark places. Today's Bible Reading:“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail” (Lamentations 3:22, NIV). Takeaway Truths God sees every injustice and every sorrow—nothing is hidden from Him. Lament is a biblical response to suffering and a pathway to deeper hope. Christ’s victory assures us that suffering will not have the final word. Let’s Pray Great God of all, You see all the brokenness in the world and know better than I do the evil that exists in the hearts of humankind. At times, I am overwhelmed by the stories of suffering I encounter. There is so much sorrow—people who go hungry, children without parents, families torn apart by war and violence, individuals struggling in poverty and slavery, and beloved daughters that You created who are exploited and assaulted. My heart breaks as I think of their lives and the hopelessness that marks their days. Lord, I know Your heart breaks for them too, and so I am asking You to be with them. Show them Your love and grace, providing comfort in their suffering. Please also guide me on how I can help, even in my small, limited role in the world. May I be a part of the work You are already doing to bring good news to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen. He was born in Ukraine in 1722, one of the many children of a priest. He attended the Ecclesiastical Academy in Kiev, but was disappointed by the worldliness, love of ease and western theological climate that he found there. After four years he left the school and embarked on a search for a spiritual father and a monastery where he could live in poverty. He eventually found wise spiritual guides in Romania, where many of the Russian monks had fled after Peter the Great's reforms. From there he traveled to the Holy Mountain. Spiritual life was at a low ebb there also, and Plato (the name he had been given as a novice) became a hermit, devoting his days to prayer and reading the Holy Scriptures and the writings of the Fathers. After four years, a visiting Elder from Romania tonsured him a monk under the name Paisius, and advised him to live with other monks to avoid the spiritual dangers of taking up the solitary life too soon. A few brethren from Romania arrived, seeking to make him their spiritual father, but as he felt unworthy to take on this task, all of them lived in poverty and mutual obedience. Others joined them from Romania and the Slavic countries, and in time they took up the cenobitic life, with Paisius as their reluctant abbot. In 1763 the entire community (grown to sixty-five in number) left the Holy Mountain and returned to Romania. They were given a monastery where they adopted the Athonite rule of life. Abbot Paisius introduced the Jesus Prayer and other aspects of hesychasm to the monastic life there: before this time, they had been used mostly by hermits. The services of the Church were conducted fully, with the choirs chanting alternately in Slavonic and Romanian. The monks confessed to their Elder every evening so as not to let the sun go down on their anger, and a brother who held a grudge against another was forbidden to enter the church, or even to say the Lord's Prayer, until he had settled it. The monastic brotherhood eventually grew to more than a thousand, divided into two monasteries. Visitors and pilgrims came from Russia, Greece and other lands to experience its holy example. St Paisius had learned Greek while on Mt Athos, and undertook to produce accurate Slavonic translations of the writings of many of the Fathers of the Church. The Greek Philokalia had been published not long before, and St Paisius produced a Slavonic version that was read throughout the Slavic Orthodox world. (This is the Philokalia that the pilgrim carries with him in The Way of a Pilgrim). The Saint reposed in peace in 1794, one year after the publication of his Slavonic Philokalia. The Synaxarion summarizes his influence: "These translations, and the influence of the Saint through the activity of his disciples in Russia, led to a widespread spiritual renewal, and to the restoration of traditional monastic life there which lasted until the Revolution of 1917."
